Girls' Generation/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Creator's Pet - A fairly mild example in Yoona. Some people resent that she is constantly at the centre of every performance and was the sole member to be featured on the Run Devil Run CD cover (despite not being the strongest singer/dancer in the group) and generally "over-exposed" (to the detriment of the other members).
    • For example: in their promos/MV for their newest song, Yoona was featured the most out of all the other members, and has been labelled as a "lead rapper", despite having the same amount of "rap" lines as Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, Tiffany and Yuri.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome - When Sunny tried to fight back against Taeyeon's attempted kidnapper. (A little perspective: Sunny's about 5'1 and 43kg, but she still gave it her all. Damn.)
  • Crowning Moment of Funny - These girls have many of these moments, especially Sooyoung, but Hyoyeon comes in a close second. The girls' episode of Intimate Note was a Crowning EPISODE of Funny. Special mention goes to Hyoyeon's "Princess Fiona", Sunny's "Princess Ariel", Jessica's brief freak-out at Sunny, the Tall vs. Short team's battles, and this little moment from the Taeyeon/Sooyoung battle:

Taeyeon: *Explaining how the height differences in the group work out*
Sooyoung: *Leans over and mutters something to the MC*
MC: She says you wore insoles!
Taeyeon: *Sputtering, to Sooyoung* WILL YOU PLEASE BE QUIET?

    • To clarify: What starts out as a simple airing of grievances between the tall and the short members quickly descends into a massive free-for-all where each members annoying habits are exposed and ridiculed. Even the MC's (who are supposed to keep some kind of order and structure to the show) are effectively relegated to the sideline while the girls duke it out amongst themselves. And this keeps going for a full 35 minutes. You can watch it here. (at least until Youtube removes it.)
      • Also qualifies as a Crowning Moment of Awesome for Seohyun. At one point the other members gang up on her commenting on her naivety and her dislike of boys. Seohyun not only has an answer for every single comment she also remains completely calm during the whole process never once losing her cool.
    • This anecdote involving Lee Hyori, a veteran K-Pop Idol, former member of now-defunct Girl Group Fin.K.L and a fan.

Lee Hyori: Do you still like Fin.K.L?
Fan: Yes.
Lee Hyori: Switch to SNSD.

    • Hyoyeon's walk at the end of their Bad Girl video.
    • Sooyoung vs. Jessica (and technically Seohyun).
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming - Whenever they win an award.
    • The girls donating a portion of the revenues from Mr. Taxi/Run Devil Run to the Red Cross Relief Fund for the victims of the recent earthquake in Japan. Rumors also abound that the girls made a private donation worth $500,000 under false names.
      • Sooyoung's fans have made it a habit to donate blood to leukemia patients each year. Read about it here. Sooyoung herself also visited a man who was dying of Lou Gehrig's disease, and gave him a trophy she'd won for him on a variety show.
        • Making this one even better is the context of the show. Most who are on the show give anecdotes about themselves, either funny or Tear Jerkers in their own rights. Not a bad thing at all, especially considering there are some genuinely touching and funny stories in there. Sooyoung used the episode as a forum to talk about the love between Seungil and his girlfriend, on Seungil's favorite show. Then, as said in the article, she declared that she was appearing on Strong Heart for him and not herself, then she actually followed through and gave him the Strong Heart trophy. Beyond that, she has continued to visit him, as do other members of Girls Generation. The only reason there are photos of their visits is because the girlfriend uploads the pictures herself.
    • After being in a car accident on the way to a charity event (fracturing her tailbone and taking her out of the schedule for the time being), Sooyoung made a video thanking fans for their concern and saying she was all right.
    • Sooyoung gets yet another one (along with Tiffany, Yuri and Seohyun), as she will be helping her father (who has vision problems) in his efforts to cure blindness.
      • It's worth noting that Sooyoung's also taken time out to talk to, play chess with and discuss God with a lonely man she saw sitting alone in a park.
        • We could probably just make a "Choi Sooyoung" subsection for Crowning Moment of Heartwarming. She got another one when she said during an interview with Soshified (a fansite dedicated to the girls) and said she was a fan of Soshified because of everything they had done, especially when they had a donation drive for the Red Cross in Japan and blood drives on Sooyoung's birthday. The interview itself provided another good one for the girls when the Soshified MC was talking about all the ways the fans support Girls' Generation on the other side of the planet, and Taeyeon started crying.
    • When they won the Disk Daesang at the Golden Disk Awards 2010 (the most important music awards in Korea, by the way). Everyone, including the girls themselves, was putting their bets on labelmates Super Junior, and their victory came out as a wonderful surprise for them and SONEs all over the world. Their genuine looks of surprise and Tears of Joy made everything even more heartwarming. Watch it here.
  • Ear Worm- Oh, Gee, Genie, Run Devil Run and Hoot.
    • And now, their Japanese audiences have some that aren't translated cover versions; Mr. Taxi and Bad Girl.
      • With the release of their new album, we have The Boys (Korean/English Versions), Trick, Top Secret and OSCAR, among others.
  • Fan Dumb - Their fanclub, Sones, are always called out for this.
    • Hate Dumb: On the opposite side, we have STAND (Strong Til All Nine Disappear). The less said about them, the better.
  • Fandom Rivalry - Most notably with ELFs, Super Junior's fandom. Which is pretty ironic, as both groups are from the same company and support each other very much.
    • Also between 2NE1 fans (Blackjacks) and Sones. Arguments mostly about the looks of the members of each group, and which group is more "talented". Just look at any of the comments in each of their music videos - it's enough to make you want to smack them all upside the head.
    • Then there was the whole CARTEL incident, a.k.a Black Ocean 2008. Cassies (DBSK fans), EL Fs (SJ fans) and Triple S (SS501 fans) turned off their lightsticks at a concert for SNSD and... behaved badly. Suffice it to say that nobody was innocent - Sones apparently had a couple issues themselves - and that is all that we will say about that!
  • Harsher in Hindsight - During a segment of Star Golden Bell, one of the MCs had to guess whose mother was the woman who they had invited. One of the options was Tiffany. In fact, as soon as she appeared, the MC started to think that it had to be Tiffany's, since they really looked alike. All of this happened, of course, before it was revealed that Tiffany's mother passed away before her debut.
  • Ho Yay Shipping - How most fans ship them. The girls themselves have talked about their ideal men and some have stated they would like to settle down and get married (heterosexually), but their actions don't do a good job of convincing fans. Gives another meaning to Yuri Fan.
  • Memetic Molester - Taeyeon was flanderized into this after a remark regarding Tiffany's butt was broadcast on a radio show.
  • Tear Jerker - The song Dear Mom considering what happened to Tiffany's mother. Tiffany's mother passed away before Tiffany debuted. Little is known about this, but it remains a tearjerker in every mention.
    • Yoona's mother apparently deserted her when she was just a little baby.
  • The Unfavorite - Hyoyeon. She's not as conventionally attractive as the others (fans call her ugly and useless - completely ignoring that she can dance rings around the rest of the group), and SM doesn't seem to be helping matters any by giving her less screentime in their videos/lines in songs than the other members.
    • European SONEs Love Hyoyeon - One of the more noticeable things about the group's participation in the recent SM Town Paris Concert is that the French Sones in attendance cheered the loudest for Hyoyeon and favored her over the other girls.
    • Japanese/American SONEs Love Sooyoung - Same for Sooyoung in Japan (she originally debuted there with a group called Route 0 and is in fact still fluent in Japanese). She seems to get more love internationally as well, which has lead to her becoming the co-centre and even seemingly taking over Yoona's dance position. She's also becoming a bit of an Ensemble Darkhorse, due to her strong improvement from their debut (arguably now among the top six vocalists), and her down-to-earth, witty and outspoken personality - she's often been mistaken for the leader of the group!
      • After their performance on the Letterman show, Sooyoung recieved the most attention/compliments (even some from celebrities such as Simon Curtis.
  • Unfortunate Implications: Why the release of the Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) EP was delayed. The original cover featured an Imperial-era Japanese fighter plane, and some of the girls' costumes featured stylized Nazi-esque insignia. Not the images to put on an album cover when you consider Japanese-Korean relations during World War 2. Compare the pre-release and final covers.
