Rance/Characters/Monster Army

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Monster Army is the main fighting force of the Monster Realm, led by the Fiend Kayblis following his victory on the Hornet Faction before the events of Rance X. They launch a surprise attack on humanity and manage to invade almost all of the Human Realm, vastly surpassing them in numbers with all of their divisions led by two Fiends each. The main focus of Rance X involves multiple confrontations with them in order to push back their forces and liberating each country from their grasp.

Their structure is relatively straightforward: the top authority belongs to the Fiends, and directly below them the Great Monster Generals, considered the most powerful monsters of the army. Regiments are led by a Monster General, with Monster Captains for each regiment made of average Monster Soldiers.

One notable group is the Maereeta Squad, an elite unit solely made of powerful Monsters and considered the best operating force in the Monster Realm. They act under the orders of the Great Monster General Stroganoff, and often clash swords with the Fiend Extermination Squad led by Rance.

Monster General

The highest commanders of a monster army, answering directly to the Fiends. Monster Generals may command units of up to 20,000 monsters, and are highly skilled in magic.

Tropes exhibited by Monster Generals include:
  • Ambiguous Robot: Their bodies seem mostly mechanical, especially with that tank on their belly that holds a human. Yet they're referred to as living creatures.
  • Magic Knight: In addition to enormous physical strength, they are all skilled spell casters as well.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: Each General has a living human trapped inside their stomach, which serves as an energy source for them and grants them power beyond what would normally be possible.
  • Shout-Out: Continuing the theme of Gundam references, they resemble The O with their bulky, rotund bodies and golden armor.

Monster Captain

Sub-commanders of the Monster Armies, each in charge of squads of up to 200 monster troops.

Tropes exhibited by Monster Captains include:
  • Elite Mook: They're a fair bit tougher than the rank-and-file soldiers and possess a unique design.
  • Magic Knight: They tend to focus more on physical attacks, but can often wield some magic as well.

Monster Soldier

Basic troops of Monster Armies. They're tougher than the normal feral monsters encountered in human lands, but are nothing an experienced adventurer can't handle.

Tropes exhibited by Monster Soldiers include:
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Their color indicates their rank and general threat level. Green is the lowest, red is the highest.
  • Mooks: They exist only to be mowed down in large numbers by adventurers and soldiers, and are noted to be fairly unintelligent.
  • Shout-Out: Pretty blatant references to Mobile Suit Gundam: the weakest troop is green, wields an axe, and has a single red eye, just like the Zaku II; the next step up is blue and wields a whip, calling to mind the Gouf; and the highest non-commanders are red and are exactly three times stronger than the green troops.
