Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

While the vast majority of the Continent is inhabited by humanity, they share territory with a few non-humans and their relationships greatly varies. Among them stand out the all-female Kalar people, the resilient and crafty Poppins, and many tribes across the world. This page lists all of them, with other humanoid people. Not to be confused with Monsters and other non-humanoid creatures.

WARNING! There are unmarked Spoilers ahead. Beware.

Kalar

A sub-species of the Protagonist Race. They were created by the Sublime God Harmonitt as a means of restocking angels. As a result the Kalar age quickly in the first months of their life, are only composed of females, are nearly immortal and have eternal youth. However their relations with humans are quite rocky, because they tend to get killed for their crystals, which are quite valuable and useful in magic crafting. This causes them to create a safe haven for their race called Pencilcow, located in the Crystal Forest, where nearly every Kalar lives.

Tropes applying to the Kalar as a whole:
  • Call a Pegasus a Hippogriff: They, along with a few other races, were created as a compromise between AliceSoft staff who wanted to put standard fantasy races in the game and those who didn't. The Kalar in particular are based on elves.
  • Curse: Their main power to fight their enemies and protect their village is to inflict various curses on their attackers.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blue eyes along with blue hair.
  • Gem Heart: They all have a distinctive red crystal on their forehead, which turns blue after losing their virginity and kills them if it's removed.
  • Gender Equals Breed: A child of a Kalar will always be a Kalar no matter what.
  • One-Gender Race: Exclusively female.
  • Rapid Aging: In the first few months after their birth, they develop a body and mind equal to a six year old human kid.
  • Theme Naming: Each Kalar queen is named after an art medium, consisting of Pastel Kalar, Modern Kalar, Vivid Kalar, and Full Kalar. The name "Kalar" itself is likely derived from the English word "color".
  • Truly Single Parent: The Kalar Impregnating Ceremony is their main way to have children, since they mostly avoid interacting with other races.
  • Virgin Power: Inverted. Kalar with blue crystals have enhanced Magic powers after losing their virginity. However, they are also the target of many desires: blue crystals are often sold in the black market, and they can be used to empower one's weapon.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: All of them harbor bright blue hair.

Kalar Royalty

Pastel Kalar

The current Queen of the Kalar. She didn't want and wasn't originally meant to be the queen, but after the death of her two older sisters, she was was forced to take the role. After becoming queen, she was supposed to go through the impregnation ceremony to create a heir, but she ended up raped by Rance which caused her to get pregnant with his child instead. She holds a grudge over this and ends up cursing him with the Morurun Curse, which forces him to look for women with a level of 35 and above to have sex with (and they will be reset to level 1 if he does).

Several times across the events of Rance Quest, she appears as a recurring antagonist bent on getting back at Rance to restore her honor, yet cannot bring herself to kill him thanks to her daughter who took a liking for him. At the end of the first half of the game, she attempts to kill Rance by using the spirits of the ancestors to defeat him with their power, only for Rance to save her when Full Kalar, her most powerful ancestor, attempts to steal Pastel's body for herself.

Following this incident, Pastel and Rance are keeping a cordial relationship out of concern for their daughter, despite their mutual enmity. Pastel eventually become something of an ally to Rance during the events of Magnum, helping him to stop the Shepherds' plot.

Tropes exhibited by Pastel include:
  • Adaptational Personality Adjustment: She's a very different character in Kichikuou Rance and her current version can even be considered a completely new character. Whereas Pastel from Kichikuou Rance was a tender and calm woman towards her first love Rance, the canon version of Pastel is a bitter, stressed, and overly serious woman who can't stand being around Rance.
  • Butt Monkey: Things never seem to go right with her when she's with Rance, ever since their first meeting in Rance Quest. During the first half of the game, she calls the spirits of her ancestors in a bid to get rid of Rance for good, only for her to lose the possession of her body to her great-great-grandmother, Full Kalar. Further shown in Rance X when the spirits of her ancestors tend to mock her or encourage her to be an item with Rance.
  • Curse: Her main talent lays in the variety of the curses she can inflict on people, from slightly inconveniencing her target to outright killing them. Two notable examples in both timelines:
    • She's victim of an attack led by Maha Margaret in Kichikuou Rance. While she didn't die herself, many of her fellow Kalar were raped and slaughtered by his army. In retribution, she delivered a massive curse on them, killing most of the army, including Maha Margaret.
    • In Rance Quest, following her impregnation by Rance, she decides not to kill him for the sake of her unborn child. Instead, she uses on him the Abstinence Morurun Curse, which prevents him from having sex with women under Level 35, and reducing their Level to 1 after the act. In a strange turn of events, this also causes Rance to become thoughtful and less agressive towards women.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Downplayed. Her attempts to call forth the spirits of her ancestors involves them possessing her body, but they are mostly good people, except for Full Kalar who hijacks her body for herself, prompting Rance and his party to get it back.
  • Lady of War: While she doesn't go often into battle due to her status, she's also a force to be reckoned with thanks to her mastery in curses and skill in Magic.
  • "No Respect" Guy: The poor woman wouldn't take a break ever since she met Rance, being victim of humiliations, mockeries and overall unlucky streaks. However, she also has a loving relationship with her daughter, and all of the Kalar treat her with respect.
  • The Not Love Interest: She's one of the few main female characters of the series to not display any romantic feelings towards Rance because of their rocky first meeting. She does however warms up to him during the events of Rance X, mainly for the sake of building a healthy family with their daughter Reset.
  • Overprotective Mom: Following the birth of Reset, Pastel becomes quick to protect her from threats, espcially Rance, whom she perceives as a danger for her daughter. Even when discovering that he acutally turns out to be a decent father to Reset, she doesn't trust him and continues to antagonize him throughout the events of Rance Quest.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Pastel isn't prone to smiling, due to her hardships as a queen and her rocky first meeting with Rance. However, the sight of her daughter is a good way to make her smile.
  • Pet the Dog: In the original ending of Rance Quest, she accepts Rance's request to undo Sill's curse, only to for her to give up because she cannot overpower the Archfiend's power. Upon seeing Rance entering into a depression and a desperate sex-spree, she's among the few women to stay with him.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Because her elder sisters died before her, she became the Kalar Queen by default. Despite not being suited for ruling, she came to be respected as the ruler of the Kalar nonetheless, and takes her duty seriously.
  • Royal We: She uses "Warawa", an old-fashioned pronoun used by royalty. In the English version, she exclusively goes by "We" when referring to herself.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: More often than not, she often operates outside of her village, mainly to get back at Rance for humiliating her and at one time wrongfully accused him of kidnapping their daughter Reset. In such events, she proves herself to be a dreadful opponent thanks to her curses.
  • Sore Loser: She's usually a dignified and proud woman, but surprisingly shows a childish side upon being defeated in combat in Rance Quest, which requires her own daughter Reset to comfort her.
  • Spare to the Throne: She was not expected to be the next Queen in line, but she eventually took the throne after several of her elder sisters died.
  • Womanchild: Not at first glance, but she tends to let her guard down people familiar with her, showing a childish side at times.

Reset Kalar

The daughter of Kalar Queen, Pastel, and the adventurer Rance. As Pastel's first daughter she's the current Kalar Princess and next heir to the throne. As a child born from Kalar rape, she was originally tasked with her father's assassination to restore her mother's honor. However when she got her chance she didn't go through with it, because her father was kind to her beforehand.

For more information on her during the finale of Rance X, see here, be wary of spoilers!

Tropes exhibited by Reset include:
  • 100% Adoration Rating: She's a universally beloved individual thanks to her kindness and adorable appearance, which more often than not includes abrasive and unapproachable people such as Satella, Full Kalar and Camilla.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: This is the reason why she couldn't bring herself to kill her father when her sleep spell worked.
  • Big Little Sister: Towards her older brother Rangi who was a toddler during their first meeting, because her Kalar biology caused her to age faster than him
  • Born Lucky: Is this thanks to her Fortune Lv1 skill.
  • Cheerful Child: So much that it can win the hearts of everyone without actually trying.
  • Child by Rape: She was accidentally conceived when Rance raped Pastel during her artificial impregnation ceremony.
  • Daddy's Girl: She's the kid Rance spends the most time raising.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: She reveals herself as Rance's daughter when he asks who her father is.
  • Morality Pet: One of the few people who brought Rance's good side, and the main reason Pastel didn't kill him on the spot.
  • More Teeth Than the Osmond Family: A trait she inherited from her father.
  • Patricide: Just like her older brother, Dark Rance, she attempted to do this, but unlike him, she gave up after getting a good chance to do it, because her father was nice to her beforehand.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Not long after her birth and growth, she's sent by her mother to kill Rance and already possesses some skill with magic and archery. She's also a playable character in Rance Quest and Rance X.
  • Younger Than She Looks: A trait from her race is that they grow up very fast in their first months. As a result she looks and acts like she's around 6 years old while she's a few months old.

Modern Kalar

The Kalar Queen of GI0920 to LP0001 and the mother of Pastel and Sakura. A woman filled with kindness and tenderness which also caused her to secretly break the rules by letting many captured men go alive. While she lacked the assertiveness and optimal personality to be a queen, she was still a respected ruler. In her lifetime she gave birth to a stunning amount of 50 children through the Kalar Impregnation Ceremony.

Tropes exhibited by Modern include:
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: In Rance X, she's prone to tell old stories of her reign, especially Pastel's childhood, in order to give her a more sympathetic image of the current Queen. However, said stories include the one time she wet herself as a child, prompting Pastel to interrupt the whole thing altogether.
  • Expy: Her design and personality are similar to Pastel Kalar in Kichikuou Rance and it can even be said that she's the actual version of that Pastel Kalar, while the current Pastel Kalar became a different character.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Her first meeting with Rance during Rance Quest has her possessing the body of her daughter to fight Rance, only for him to defeat her and have sex with her on the spot. However, Modern, who doesn't know much about human society, is impressed by his attitude and determination, to the point she immediatly suggests her daughter to be with Rance, thinking of him as relatively decent guy.
  • May-December Romance: She happens to have a crush on Rance during the events of Rance X, but since she's also Pastel's mother, she prefers not to go through with it.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Kalars usually enslave men to use as breeding slaves. She was in the habit of releasing men after finishing with them, breaking the laws of Kalar society.
  • Posthumous Character: She's dead by the time of the games, with her daughter Pastel having assumed the throne in her place. Her ghost still wanders the catacombs however.
  • Shipper on Deck: Following the events of Rance Quest, she's prone to pair up her daughter with Rance, despite the former's protests.

Vivid Kalar

The Kalar Queen of GI810 to GI0920 and the mother of Modern. She's the one who instituted most of the rules of Kalar society as it exists today.

Tropes exhibited by Vivid include:
  • Can't Have Sex Ever: Downplayed. Because she was granted a small and ungrowing body, she couldn't find a proper partner to have sex with her, prompting her to search for a way to bear children without requiring sex. She also reveals on her own admission that the laws she enacted during her reign was because of her frustration to not being able to have sex unlike her subjects.
  • Does Not Like Men: She hates men, seeing them as low, sub-Kalar beings. During her reign she forbade sex for pleasure and instituted the practice of enslaving men purely for reproduction. She also developed the Impregnation Ceremony to allow Kalar to get pregnant without having sex.
    • Eventually revealed to be Subverted as seen in Rance X. The main reason she created the Kalar laws as of today was to prevent the village from falling into anarchy, as many Kalars were inspired by Full to elope with human men to have sex with them. Vivid also couldn't have children on her own because her small body was a turn off for her first man, who didn't want to hurt her.
  • Emotionless Girl: Vivid rarely emotes at all, but she's shown to be a responsible and loving queen to her subjects, despite not showing it on her face. When going out with Rance during one of her events in Rance X, she sometimes hides her face to deal with embarrassment.
  • Like a Son to Me: Among the Kalar Queens, she's the most enthusiastic about treating Rance like his grandchild, usually by referring to him as her "in-law".
  • Long Lived: She was 110 when she died, unusual for a Kalar, who have lifespans comparable to humans.
  • Never Grew Up: Her body and appearance make her look like a child slightly bigger than Reset, despite having lived for a long time. It is not known why she didn't grew up, but she theorizes that her stressful life and long training in Magic Arts can be cause.
  • Not Growing Up Sucks: Because she looks like a prepubescent child, she stayed a virgin because her given partner refused to have sex with her out of concern for her body and because of her childish look. She also doesn't take kindly to be treated like a child.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Inverted. She actually approves her granddaughter Pastel getting in a relation with Rance, despite the fact that Pastel herself doesn't want anything to do with him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She's not seen smiling even once in all of her appearances. Rance X reveals that her no-nonsense attitude comes from her harsh past as a Queen, because she was essentially put on the throne at birth by her mother Full, who waited for a convinient excuse to escape from her duties as a Queen. Thus, she grown up as a overly serious and stoic individual, bent on fixing the mess left by her mother and unable to have sex.

Full Kalar

The Kalar Queen of GI0715 to GI0810 and the mother of Vivid.

Tropes exhibited by Full include:
  • Heroic Willpower: She resisted becoming a devil, and later an angel by sheer force of will, which no other Kalar has ever done.
  • Virginity Flag: Notable for defying hers. She had three daughters, but although she obviously lost her virginity doing so, her crystal never changed color.

Kalar Villagers

Aegis Kalar

The commander of the Kalar Defense Team and Pastel's right hand, whose sisters were killed by human men for their crystals. Following that event, she trained to become the finest warrior of the Kalar Tribe and her great skill as her archer dissuades many humans from invading Pencilcow.

Sakura Kalar

One of Modern's many children, and a sister of Pastel Kalar.

Tropes exhibited by Sakura include:
  • Boring but Practical: She handles administrative affairs in the Kalar government. Most people see it as boring work but without her things would not go smoothly for anyone.
  • Hidden Eyes: Never takes off her visor, leaving her eyes covered at all times.

Somita Kalar

A Kalar Knight and a childhood friend of Pastel sent as a support for his army in Kichikuou Rance. Her greatest wish is to become a beautiful Angel, and as such she prefers to avoid fights and sex, because doing so would turn her into a Devil. Her character was eventually retconned as Aegis Kalar in Rance Quest.

Tropes exhibited by Somita include:
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: If Rance keeps his word of not sending her into fights and doesn't sleep with her, she eventually transforms into an Angel and quits his army.
  • Our Demons Are Different: On the other hand, if she's sent into battle too much, she transforms into a Devil.
  • Sex for Services: Allows Rance to have sex with her if he succeeds at turning her into an Angel.

Horus

The Horus are a race of extraterrestrial lifeforms whose goals are to find and colonize planets for their race after their own planet the "mother star" became a desolate wasteland as a result of their high energy use. A colony is comprised of 10,000 individuals led by a queen. One of those colonies, specifically colony vessel F-3Q45 crash landed into the deadly land of Siberia, located northernmost in the Continent, during the era of Abel, presently located in Helman. However, the colony was nearly wiped out by the Monster Army lead by Abel which caused their numbers to dwindle to the 1000 left cryogenically asleep. Out of amusement the Archfiend turned their engineer Meglass into one of his Fiends. This caused the remaining colony left in slumber until the year of LP0007 when they were found and awakened by the adventurer Rance and his companions. As thanks for their awakening, the colony fought alongside the humans in the 2nd Fiend War and instead of killing them all and colonizing the Continent, they instead lived peacefully with the humans and became one of their sub-species.

Queen Terra Horus

The leader of the Horus on the Continent, she was frozen in stasis before being released by Rance and his party in Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by Terra include:
  • I Choose to Stay: Upon making contact with the rest of her people, they indicated a desire to invade and conquer the Continent. She cut off the transmission without revealing her location, even knowing this would trap her colony forever.
  • Klingons Love Shakespeare: She greatly enjoys human culture and likes living on the Continent so much she chooses not to reunite with her race.

Jhahlckas

About once every thousand years, a Horus is born with a mutation that transforms their body and turns them into violent killing machines. These are known as "Death Horus", and are greatly feared by their own kind. Jhahlckas is one such Death Horus, who was on the Horus ship that crashed into the Continent. He is one of the worst criminals the Horus have ever known.

Tropes exhibited by Jhalckas include:
  • Blood Knight: Jhahlckas lives for slaughter and murder, and is described as having killed his own family with no hesitation or remorse.
  • Extra Eyes: The two giant mantis eyes on his head are not typical of Horus, and are a sign of Death mutation.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: In his youth, Jhahlckas was just a kind, gentle creature. By the time his Death traits began to manifest, nobody saw him as any kind of threat.

Poppins

The Poppins are a sub-species of the current Protagonist Race Humanity. They were created by the Sublime God Roven-Pan as a backup in case humanity gets wiped out completely. As a result they live underground free from the conflicts on the surface of the Continent. They resemble small chibi humans that are around 60 cm average. This also causes their lifespan to be rather short with the majority of them dying when they become 20 years old. They are physically weaker than humans and lack the ability to use magic with only rare mutants that once born around 1000 years able to use it. In exchange for these weaknesses, they can survive extreme environmental conditions such as being immune to regular poisons and nuclear waste, live comfortably in temperatures within -100°C and 80°C and can even breathe in water and a vacuum. However they can still be killed by disease and other brutal ways. They are also crafty builders able to create machinery on par of that of Maria Custard, who is considered the greatest engineer on the Continent.

Genbu's Castle

Waka

A Youkai painting of the woman Genbu Castle was built to imprison. The original Waka has long since fled the Castle, but this painting houses her memories, at least up to the point she escaped. In Rance 5D, she is eventually able to transfer her mind into a life-sized doll of Waka, allowing her to move around freely.

Tropes exhibited by Waka include:
  • And I Must Scream: Life as a painting is pretty boring: Waka cannot move at all, and while she can speak, there aren't many people around to talk to. It's no surprise she abandons the painting for the doll.
  • Art Initiates Life: An anonymous painter spent 200 years creating the painting, and his devotion to his art caused the painting to come to life as a Youkai.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: After Genbu returns to his castle in Sengoku Rance, he is furious that Waka fell in love with another person (implied to be Bird Lithfie) and destroys the doll in his rage.
  • Living Toys: Originally, the life-size Waka Doll was created as a sex toy/guardian of Genbu's Castle. Waka took it over and now uses it as her own body.

Noriko

A youkai woman who runs a shop in Genbu's Castle. Rance is immediately taken with her and resolves to seduce her.

Tropes exhibited by Noriko include:
  • Achilles' Heel: While her head is detachable, it can't remain separated from her body for more than ten minutes or so. Rance kills her by throwing her body down a well and placing a heavy rock on it.
  • Kick the Dog: Rance panics at the sight of her neck and flees in terror from her, and when she chases him, he kills her. Afterward he feels badly about what happened, one of the very few times Rance has been shown as feeling remorse for something he did.
  • Woman Scorned: Rance freaks out upon seeing her neck lengthen, and she is hurt and furious because she thought Rance actually cared for her. This leads to her head chasing him all over the village.
  • Youkai: A rokurokubi to be precise. She has a very long, rubbery neck... that can also detach from her body and fly around.

Oni Hag

A horrifically ugly giant hag that wanders the desert outside of Genbu's Castle. She's actually a Rare Gal Monster who devours humans for food, and is an exception to the rule of Gal Monsters generally being attractive.

Tropes exhibited by the Oni Hag include:
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Eats humans she comes across.
  • Nonstandard Game Over: If Rance should happen to use his Capture Rope on her during battle, he'll catch her just like any other Gal Monster... what happens next isn't shown, but it leads to Rance's death, implied via sex.
  • Recurring Boss: If the player decides to flee from her first encounter, they will have to fight her again later in the game.
