That '70s Show/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

"Randy is perfect. That lady at the fair who did the caricatures? She refused to draw him cause she couldn't find a flaw."

  • Ensemble Darkhorse:
    • Red's quite popular.
    • Menopausal-Kitty and Leo as well.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Many fans refuse to acknowledge the existence of Randy or the eighth season.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple Hyde/Jackie, which is also a subversion; the two were together for a large chunk of the series, but officially ended in season seven after some other temporary break ups.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Hyde invokes this upon learning that his real father is black. According to him, it explains "my fro, my inherent coolness, my constant suspicion of the man."
  • Funny Moments: So many it has its own page.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Laurie in general, after Lisa Robin Kelly's numerous arrests that have destroyed her career.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight / Funny Aneurysm Moment:
    • Eric wearing an all-black outfit wishing he could shoot webs and later saying he learned how to fight from Spider-Man. Topher Grace went on to play Venom in Spider-Man 3, who had all of Spidey's powers, wore a symbiote that was black as a costume, and could shoot webs.
    • In "Going To California," Hyde tells Eric that he "has no problem fooling whitey." Eric reminds Hyde that he's white, and Hyde responds by saying, "Barely." Cut to Season 7, where it is revealed that Hyde's biological father is black.
    • Even though it was in denial, in "Spread Your Wings", Kitty did predict that Eric would come home from Africa "soon": during the series finale 9 episodes later.
      • Even though it wasn't flat out stated, she was also right about them getting back together.
  • Ho Yay: There was an episode where a Eric became friends with a guy called Buddy. There was a montage of them hanging out to a Best Friends song, only for it to turn out that Eric's friend was gay. At the end of the episode, Red and Bob had a Best Friends montage.

Hyde: You're like half in love with him aren't you?

    • There's also this little gem:

Kelso: ...Did you just kiss my ear a little?
Fez: ...Yes.
Kelso: [beat] I kinda liked it.

    • Then there was the episode where Fez had an erotic dream about Kelso.
  • Jerkass Sue: Kelso's older brother Casey, who does not do a single decent thing in any of his appearances, yet has every female drooling over him. In his relationship with Donna (who is underage), he seduces her, checks her out of school on a regular basis, and gets her drunk in the middle of the day. When this last act finally gets the parents to take notice of what he's doing to her, Donna prepares to fight for their relationship, but Casey submits instantly, breaking her heart and walking away with no retribution.
  • Magnificent Bastard:
    • Hyde, although Red similarly has qualities of it.
    • Played straight in the following dialogue:

Fez: Jackie, are any of your college-bound friends "vir-gins"?
Jackie: Fez, it's pronounced "virgins".
Fez: What? No, but, Hyde said--
[Fez realizes his folly and looks at Hyde]
Fez: Oh, you Magnificent Bastard.
Hyde: I'm sorry, buddy. Oh, and it's pronounced "bas-tard".

  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Kelso in makeup and a dress. Also, Kelso's impression of Jackie without makeup.
    • Kelso's imagining of life without Jackie.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Randy, a Replacement Scrappy for Eric and Kelso by having only the best traits of both of them.
    • Pretty much everyone hates Samantha too.
    • Fez also grew really unpopular as time wore on. Largely due to him becoming Jackie's boyfriend in the last season, and because he was generally less funny than the rest of the cast.
  • Ship Sinking: Jackie/Kelso after season 5
  • Ship Tease: Jackie/Hyde and Jackie/Fez had there fair share of teasing in the early seasons whenever she broke up with Kelso. Both couples actually came to fruition over the course of the series.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Donna and Randy. Donna is noticeably attracted to Randy while she's still in a relationship with Eric. The fact that the writers also broke up the Official Couple (and having it be an off-screen Eric's fault, no less) just to get them together doesn't help.
  • Straw Man Has a Point:
    • The reason behind Eric and Donna's first break-up was that he gave her a promise ring, and this lead to them discussing the futures they imagine--Eric envisions them going through college and beyond together, while Donna admits she hopes for a life of glamor and adventure, and sometimes her thoughts about such don't include him. Depending on your interpretation, Donna either doesn't take her relationship with Eric seriously, or she's afraid of commitment. Either way, you can understand Eric being upset with her. His last words in the argument, "if you can see a future without me in it and that doesn't break your heart, then we're not what I thought we were" show he feels a lot stronger about their relationship than she does. However in the episodes after, Donna is just as bitter and mean to Eric as he is to her.
    • Upon learning that he knocked Brooke up, Kelso's initial reaction is reluctance to get involved or take responsibility, which leads to the others criticizing him. While they're certainly not wrong, Kelso has a pretty understandable response--"Y'know, it's real easy to talk about the right thing when it's not your life."
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The season five episode "Nobody's Fault But Mine (Hyde Loves Jackie)." In the last episode, he saw Kelso and Jackie together and thought she was cheating; as payback, he cheats on a nurse he just met. After Kelso explains to Hyde that nothing happened, Hyde and Jackie have a talk. Unfortunately...

Hyde: Come on, Jackie...
Jackie: No, you know what, Steven? I'm sorry... it's over.

    • And also from the same episode, particularly this dialogue:

Hyde: Jackie, I love you.
Jackie: Yeah, well I don't love you.

    • In the final episode, the Eric/Donna montage (set to Big Star's "Thirteen") followed by his appearing to wish her Happy New Year and apologize for having left her.
  • What an Idiot!: One of the group's favorite stories is of the time Kelso tried to do the "burning bag of dog poop" prank on someone, but stomped it out himself. A frustrated Kelso counters "IT WAS ON FIRE!"
