X-23/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Breakout Character: Was arguably the main character of New X-Men, has had a number of miniseries and now an ongoing series, and is now almost always included in Team images.
  • Complete Monster: Pretty much everyone from the facility, especially Dr Zander Rice and Kimura. The only exceptions were Laura's mother and her sensei.
  • Counterpart Comparison: Some people still says she is "just Wolverine with boobs". There is also vocal minority of Marrow, 90's attempt at creating female Wolverine, who feels Laura is stealing her place.
  • Crack Pairing: With Spider-Man, there is a large group of people on certain imageboard that must not be named who thinks they're cute together.
  • Creator's Pet: Created for X-Men: Evolution, Joe Quesada immediately took a shine to her and introduced her in his NYX series. Afterwards she immediately got a six issue miniseries detailing her origin, another six issue miniseries, was made a main cast member of Uncanny X-Men until Decimation where she was put into New X-Men. In New X-Men (which was written by her creators post-Decimation, although Marvel planned to add her before they came on board) she immediately started being shipped with hunky bad boy Julian Keller aka Hellion while Hellion's love interest and former major character (Sofia Mantega aka Wind Dancer) was depowered and written out of the book. And somewhere in that she was also a Captain Universe host in a miniseries that also included the likes of Sue Storm and Thor as other hosts. She then became a main cast member of the relaunched X-Force and was put into Marvel vs. Capcom 3 around the same time she got her own ongoing series. For a long time Marvel seemed to see her as the next big breakout character and repeatedly shoved her down everyone's throats while practically screaming "You will like her!" although fan interest ranged from indifference to outright annoyance (often derisively being called Girlverine) and it wasn't until Marjorie Liu's work on her solo series before fans eventually warmed up to her. Or they did until she was placed into the already inflated cast of Avengers Academy after her book ended where she's gone back from being the Cassandra Cain-esque character she was under Liu to the boring automaton she was before.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Zander Rice's father was one of the scientists from the Weapon X program that bonded adamantium to Wolverine's skeleton, and wound up being killed by Logan when he escaped; Rice transferred his hatred for Logan onto Laura, which is why he abuses and tortures her. That and he's simply a bastard.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: The first X-Man after Wolverine to have her own page on this site (and one of the few to have her own series). Even when she joined the New X-Men she was easily the most popular character.
    • For a while she was the only X-Man with her own page, but now Storm and Dazzler (and Magneto, if you count him) have gotten in on the act.
  • Expy: Hmm a young, royally screwed up, super-powered, dark haired, teenaged girl who uses Waif Fu? Applies equally to X-23 or River Tam.
    • The two characters are so similar that many fans are already demanding that any possible live-action adaptation of X-23 be played by Summer Glau.
    • Also, Hanna is more or less what a real world version of X-23 would look like.
  • Fanon: Before they gave her the name Laura in the comics, some X-Men: Evolution fanfic writer would give her the name Sarah, after her mother in the comics.
  • Foe Yay: Kimura is WAY too obsessed with Laura.
  • Les Yay: X-23 and Jubilee. It's not what it looks like. or maybe it is.
  • The Woobie: God, The Facility scientists were dicks. Even taking the whole raising a child to be an assassin thing into consideration her upbringing was far harsher than it had to be.
