Shinji Ikari Raising Project/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Crazy Awesome: Gendou.
  • Dude, Not Funny: Various scenes and YMMV, but the Valentine's day special where Kaworu attempts to rape Shinji in a park stands out. Also, the jokes about Gendou's hormonal problem and tendency to look like a child molester. We also suggest you don't think too much about the implications of Naoko's reappearance.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: IT'S GENDO!
  • Fetish Fuel: Take your pick. Moe-blobs! Tsunderes! Flat-chested girls! Accidental groping! Teen stiffies! Clothes-melting Naughty Tentacles ! Gothic lolitas in wedding dresses! Quirky older women! More Les Yay that your brains can handle! Something to do with your mom! That it caters to so many weird fetishes goes to show how one person's Fetish Fuel is also another person's Fan Disservice.
  • Freud Was Right: Played for fun and Lampshaded: Misato thinks Shinji loves "generous" women because he has a mazakon (mother complex). Shinji is a mama's boy, but it's a very mild case compared to the series. The Yui Fan Service still gets pretty weird at times. It's also nice to know Shinji's parents have a "healthy relationship" (seriously, the original anime was less explicit on Gendou's sexuality. Anime Shinji would Go Mad from the Revelation in no time).
    • The recurrent implication that Shinji will grow up to be just like Gendou and that his partner (whoever it is!) will find his clumsiness cute and charming. Which really makes one wonder what's the point of having a coming of age story.
    • Shinji's "you-remind-me-of-my-mom" vibe towards Rei.
    • Ritsuko hitting on Shinji to get information about the Centre is also pretty loaded.
    • The plan to make Shinji blossom emotionally obviously has to do with his sexual maturation -much like in the original series.
    • Also, Gendou and Ryouji's male rivalry involves baseball bats wielded in dramatic angle shots. When Gendou fails to bat properly, he reacts pretty much like Roy Mustang by rainy weather and insists on a revenge match.
  • Fridge Horror: Gendou's fanboying over Shinji seems to parody the daughter complex in comedy mangas, and no one wants to remember this element of his original characterization in the context of a high school comedy (also, it offers a scary new explanation for why he thought in The End of Evangelion that he'd be a danger to Shinji if he raised him. The jokes about Shinji being a mama's boy. Ritsuko's occupation as the school nurse, when you consider that she acted as the school director with Touji in the original series and manga. This manga also sheds light on Naoko Akagi's special brand of mental illness, Ritsuko's obsession with the Ikaris and Kyouko's lack of parenting skills. Thank you, Raising Project.)
    • There's also the possibility that Yui participated in creating Rei.
    • On a lighter note, how does Gendou know how it feels to wear the shiny girly swimming suits?
  • Fridge Logic: Why does Rei drop after a few minutes of riding a fitness bike while it later turns out she's athletic and trained in martial arts?
    • Also, why does Gendou reads his daily newspapers with his sunglasses on?Propably just because they are his tademark but still...isn't it unhealthly for your eyes??
  • Funny Moments: Gendou's attention-seeking/inspirational speeches about masculinity -and the fact he fails to ever impress anybody for a whole page. Same for his grand demonstrations of affection towards Shinji, which look more like Godzilla attacks than anything human. The ohanami scene, where Kyouko starts pestering Asuka about her relationship with Shinji and how she'd really like to see their kids, and everybody facefaults and goes Super-Deformed. Also, Shinji in a women's swimming suit [dead link] and Misato's comment that it "is more covering than a man's" -in fact, the whole swimming suit episode. Asuka's clumsy fights with Kaworu over Shinji, and the scene where she calls him a homo and he shrugs in absolute disdain. Yui in a baseball outfit, especially since she is in command all the time and was spared the fitness bike silliness.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Many of Shinji and Rei's interactions with Yui. The scene where Shinji is sick in bed and tended to by Rei; his reciprocation when she gets sick in a recent chapter. Shinji's multiple rescues of Rei in virtual realities during synchro tests. Shinji's moments with Asuka usually involve a scene on the beach and a reminiscence from their childhood but are generally followed by an Accidental Pervert + Megaton Punch incident. The scene where she eventually kisses Shinji was very fluffy, though. Most of the ohanami episode, with the (short-lived feel-good "happy families" feel. Asuka's few encounters with Kyouko involve a rain of adorableness. Gendou's daydream about a grown-up scientist Shinji both qualifies as a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming and as a Crowning Moment of Funny. And let's face it, Yui embracing Gendou publicly (without Tanging him!) after his rescue of the MAGI system was surprisingly cute.
  • Hollywood Homely
  • Ho Yay: Shinji/Kaworu. Kaworu is pretty literally the resident gay conspiracy, with many Unfortunate Implications. Gendo... simply loves Shinji so dearly he wants to bear-hug him from behind or take a bath with him.
  • Les Yay: To an annoying degree. Asuka/Rei on illustrations and in Shinji's dreams, and even in real-life as they become more friendly toward each other late in the series, Maya/Ritsuko, Rei/Misato because Rei obsesses about boobs and can't help touching them, and also Ritsuko/Yui and the terrifying Rei/Yui because Yui has the largest breasts of the whole cast. Look hard and you can probably see some Mana/Asuka too.
  • Moe: The manga is like an inventory of Moe stereotypes and more; see Fetish Fuel. Also, Shinji is just adorable.
  • Moment of Awesome: Whenever the situation looks hopeless, Gendou temporarily becomes incredibly competent and Kamina-level Badass for a few pages and a Crowning Moment of Funny occurs. Shinji also saves the day a few times, but not as spectacularly.
  • MST3K Mantra: We suggest you only think about the original series and its correlations with this when it's funny.
  • No Yay: Gendou-Naoko. It's kind of like Shinji-Misato with wrinkles and an intolerable amount of deviousness.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap - Gendo.
  • Running the Asylum: Shinji Ikari Raising Project is quite obviously done by a Promoted Fanboy and is entirely powered by Mythology Gag and Fanservice.
  • The Scrappy: Possibly Naoko Akagi.
  • Selective Squick: All the teenage ecchi may be sexy for teenagers but quite creepy for older and/or female Eva fans. See Fetish Fuel and Fan Disservice.
    • Also, there's the many panty-shots... especially in the chapter cover pages.
  • Squick: Various and YMMV.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: Mostly. Everybody's supposed to be so cute and Moe, and Shinji is so wuved and cuddly and all.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: One of the possible reactions to this... if you presuppose Raising Project has anything in common with the original series!
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: Strange and unrelated things are being made at the Centre for Artificial Evolution, such as Moe swimsuits and probably "special vitamins." What do you think Gendou derives his energy from? From Moe swimsuits and fitness bikes.
  • Unfortunate Implications: Kaworu's aggressive sexual harassment of Shinji (on top of his being the fujoshi-pandering token gay character. Gendou is all about how middle-aged men are creepy, or something like that. The Moe and Christmas Cake humour also get very sexist at times, not to mention the scripts borrowed directly from hentai.)
  • What an Idiot!
  • The Woobie: Rei is particularly fragile emotionally and seems to have gone through a lot of isolation.
