SuperTuxKart is a free and open source Racing Game inspired by Mario Kart and other racing games. It is a fork of the discontinued TuxKart, and runs under the Irrlicht Engine. SuperTuxKart features some of the most well-known libre software mascots, including Tux (the mascot of Linux), Konqi (the mascot of KDE), Wilber (the mascot of the GIMP), and GNU (the mascot of GNU). For many years, it operated on a basis of little-to-no backstory until Version 0.8's release in 2012.
The game can be downloaded for free on its website - the aforementioned backstory can be viewed here as well.. Its predecessor's website can be found here.
Not to be confused with Tux Racer.
Tropes used in SuperTuxKart include:
- Bonnie Scotland: The "Scotland" track.
- Build Like an Egyptian: The "Shifting Sands" track.
- Car Fu
- Crossover: All the libre mascots live (and recreate) in the Mascot Kingdom (spoofing the Mushroom Kingdom).
- The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: In the story mode race against Nolok, he gets to set bubblegum (which for him looks like some sort of green slime with spikes) and activate a flyswatter (which for him looks like a hammer) at will. Given Nolok's Artificial Stupidity, however, it doesn't help him all that much.
- Everything's Better with Penguins: Tux.
- Jungle Japes: The "Amazonian Journey" track. Mild example with the "Secret Garden" track.
- Lethal Lava Land: The "Fort Magma" track.
- Palmtree Panic: "The Island" track.
- One World Government: Despite multiple countries in the world, they all seem to be ruled by Princess Sara as the 'Mascot Kingdom'.
- Shout-Out:
- In the older versions, one of the predefined messages for the item swapper is "A Wizard Did It"; another for the anchor is "<player> pays the next round of grog".
- Slippy-Slidey Ice World: A frictionless variant on two stages: "Snow Peak" and "Northern Resort".
- Talk Like a Pirate: Several instances involving the use of the anchor item.
- Unlockable Content: Clearing the Story Mode unlocks many of the tracks, the Follow The Leader gametype and adds GNU to the roster.
- Wacky Racing
