Super Mario XP

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
Die, Bowser! You don't belong in the Mushroom Kingdom!

Super Mario XP is a Mario fangame by CnC Darkside. Bowser's forces have kidnapped Princess Peach again, and it's up to Mario to save the day. The game does not have a Windows XP theme.

Tropes used in Super Mario XP include:
  • Boss Corridor: Before each boss, there is a room filled with hearts and subweapons. If Mario dies during the boss, he restarts in said room.
  • Boss Rush: Stage 8 is unlocked after beating the game. Mario has to beat every boss in the game, but with no power-ups.
  • Dem Bones: The Dry Bones enemies. Like the Blood Skeleton, they come back after being destroyed.
  • The Dragon: Kamek is Bowser's Dragon in this game. He shows up in the introduction cut-scene and kidnaps Princess Peach with his magic.
  • Drop the Hammer: The Hammer Bros return in this game. Also Mario can use the Hammer subweapon, which works like the Axe Subweapon in Castlevania.
  • Flying Seafood Special: Cheep-Cheeps [1] appear in Stages 2, 3, and 4.
  • Fusion Fic: This game takes elements from the Castlevania series and mixes it with Super Mario Bros.
  • High-Pressure Blood: When Mario dies, he dies in a bloodsplosion like Richter Belmont.
  • Hot-Blooded Voice Grunting: Mario yells whenever he jumps or whenever he does an Item Crash. The voice samples come from Richter Belmont..
  • Holy Hand Grenade/Precision-Guided Boomerang: Mario uses the cross sub-weapon and uses it like a boomerang. When Mario uses the cross item-crash, he raises his hands and summons a ton of crosses to attack his foe.
  • I Am Legion: Legion is in this game, but the spirits are replaced by Boos.
  • I Fell for Hours: As an homage to the cutscene in Castlevania where Simon falls down a long shaft, Mario gets to fall down a shaft in Stage 3. Unfortunately, he has to move or die in a bottomless pit.
  • Invisible Block: In order to progress through certain sections, Mario has to find hidden blocks and use them as platforms.
  • It's Raining Men: The giant Paragoomba boss in stage 1 drops Goombas on top of Mario's head as its primary form of attack. It can get annoying after a while.
  • King Mook: Most of the bosses except Kamek and Bowser are clearly leaders of their respective mooks.
  • Life Meter: Instead of the usual die-in-two-hits system from Super Mario Bros., Mario has the life bar system from Castlevania.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Piranha Plants are in this game. A set of Piranha Plants is the boss of stage 2 and the red ones show up in the later stages of the game.
  • Nostalgia Level: Super Mario XP takes bits and pieces of the levels from the original Super Mario Bros and mixes them with harder sections.
  • Pipe Maze: Stage 6 has a section filled with pipes and some of them are filled with Piranha Plants.
  • Platform Battle: The platforms in the Reznor Boss Battle in Stage 5 are always falling into the lava. Mario can beat the Reznor by hitting the bottom of their platforms and knocking them into the lava.
  • Playing with Fire: The Fire Flower appears as a subweapon in this game. When Mario uses the Item Crash, he can rapidly spam fireballs.
  • Poison Mushroom: The Trope Namer is back, and as a purple Palette Swap of the original Mushroom. Instead of killing Mario, they take away half of his health.
  • Recycled Soundtrack: Super Mario XP uses background music from various Castlevania games.
  • Sea Monster: The boss of Stage 4 is a serpentine Cheep-Cheep. When it gets hit, it loses a segment and becomes faster.
  • Storming the Castle: To rescue Peach, Mario must storm Bowser's castle [2]. It might be difficult because of the many obstacles and enemies he faces along the way.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: To regain bars on the life meter, Mario can eat a Mushroom.
  • Teleport Spam: When Kamek is hit during his boss battle in Stage 6, he teleports away from Mario. It's annoying to deal with.
  • Underground Level: Most of Stage 4 takes place in a cavern underneath Bowser's castle. Cheep-Cheeps jump out of the lake to annoy Mario, and the boss is a serpent-like Cheep-Cheep.
  • Warmup Boss: Like the giant bat in the |NES Castlevania game, the giant Paragoomba is a piece of cake.
  • Warp Zone: Found as a secret in Stage 5. If used, the Reznor boss battle is skipped.
  • Wrap Around: The mini-boss battle in Stage 7 is an homage to the Mario Bros arcade game. When anything passes a side of the arena, they appear on the other side.
  1. The flying variety only show up in Super Mario XP.
  2. 7 Stages in total
