Proposal: rename this page to "Shonen Demographic"

For many reasons:

  1. The page already lists works that are not manga, so the current name is inaccurate.
  2. The matching page for the Distaff Counterpart is called Shoujo Demographic.
  3. This is an English-language wiki, and the majority of English-language keyboards do not have any way to type the ō character.

Works for me.

RivetVermin (talkcontribs)

Seems sensible, though I would prefer at least one instance of "Shōnen" remain in the description, maybe the first instance as follows:

Shonen (JP: 少年, Shōnen)

As, while it's not the wiki's mission, I do think there's some importance in presenting foreign words correctly.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

The thing is, the only "correct" presentation of Japanese words is in hiragana or katakana - any romanization system is going to introduce errors. Kunrei-shiki (which you're using) doesn't preserve the pronunciations of all words, while Hepburn (which I'm using) gives different spellings for the same kanji depending on how they're used.

Oh, and JP has multiple meanings, including Jet Pack, JPod, Judas Priest, and Jurassic Park. It's best to avoid using abbreviations on the wiki.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

I don't see a reason to disagree! Looks valid enough.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

I think Rivet makes fair points, but other than that, I agree with the proposal.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Yes, renaming makes sense.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I don't mind mentioning that "shonen" can also be spelled "shounen", if that's what people mean by including the spelling with the ō character...

HLIAA14YOG (talkcontribs)

I don't think reinforcing an error carried over from TvT is an argument, but I agree with the other two arguments.

Lequinni (talkcontribs)

Rename for consistence have my vote too

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Addressing the name dispute, I've added this paragraph to the page:

The Other Wiki tells us that the word can be pronounced with either a short or long "sho", so "shonen" and "shounen"/"shōnen" are equally correct romanizations of 少年. For ease of typing on a US English keyboard, and to distinguish the demographic from the magazines, we will use "shonen" here.

If there are any objections, please let me know in the next 24 hours. If I don't see any objections, I'll rename the page after that time.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

None here.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

No objections.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

No objections.
