• And the Fandom Rejoiced: The announcement of a new Claymation film from Aardman following a long hiatus from big screen projects after leaving Dreamworks Animation.
  • Not to mention the fact that this is their first Claymation film since 2005's Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
  • The casting of David Tennant, Martin Freeman, and Brian Blessed got a lot of people excited.
• Complete Monster: Queen Victoria. A heartless psychopath who will stop at absolutely nothing to wipe out pirates forever, collects exotic animals for the sole purpose of eating them and implicitly states that she is not above cannibalism.

It's a pity you can't eat pirates, really.

• • The Bishop of Oxford in the book counts as well. He kidnapped Darwin's brother if he expedited Mister Bobo and has been making women sweat so much that it kills them so he could turn it into bars of soap to make him look younger and it's been hinted that he's been doing it for seven or eight months!
• Crowning Music of Awesome: The song in the first UK trailer, to the tune of "Drunken Sailor".
• Crowning Moment of Heartwarming:In chapter three of the book, The Pirate in Green lets the Pirate Captain know that he's planning to get a tattoo of his face with him saying "Scurvy Knaves" on his upper arm and he wants to know if he's OK with it. The Pirate Captain is left speechless.

Pirate Captain: Of course...I...ah...I don't know what to say. Pirate in Green: Are you okay, Captain? Pirate Captain: Yes...it's just this, um, ham. It's very spicy and it's making my eyes water.

• Designated Hero: Why are we rooting for the pirates again? The only thing they done that's even remotely close to genuine goodness is saving Polly, who the Captain had himself sold. Let's not forget that these people have sworn themselves to looting and gutting people. Of course, they are the lesser of two evils in the story and of course, it's a children's tale, but one can still wonder why we are supposed to sympathise with them.
  • Well, they are very bad at piracy so most looting and gutting they've actually gotten away with was pure luck.
• Designated Villain: Darwin in the first half of the film. Sure, he tried to steal Polly... After the pirates attacked his ship, threatened him with decapitation and tried to murder him for the hell of it.
  • He's supposed to be a proper member of society though, and stealing someone's Team Pet is definitely not proper. The pirates are only doing what pirates do.
• Ear Worm: The song in the UK trailer. Based on the traditional sea shanty "Drunken Sailor".
• Ensemble Darkhorse: The Albino Pirate has a lot of fans.
• Fetish Fuel: An in-universe example. Darwin is attracted to Victoria because of her Prim and Proper Bun (and bum).
• Genius Bonus: Darwin is cataloging a new species of barnacle when he first appears. Before Origin of Species, Darwin spent much of his career systematizing the taxonomy of barnacles, and was considered one of the world's top experts on such crustaceans.
• Ho Yay: Tons of it between the Pirate Captain and the Pirate With A Scarf.
• One-Scene Wonder: Brian Blessed as the Pirate King.
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks: The censoring of the Leper scene caused this.
  • The news that Russell Tovey (the Albino Pirate) was being overdubbed with Anton Yelchin for the American release has been getting this reaction.
  • In fact, anything to do with the American version.
• What Do You Mean It's for Kids?: It gets pretty dark and depressing at times and there are a few mild profanities throughout. Also, the regular mention of 'running people through'.
• The Woobie: Charles Darwin. Dear god, Charles Darwin...
  • Jerkass Woobie: In the beginning of the story and up until his betrayal by Queen Victoria.
