Topic on Talk:Mechanical Abomination

Nominating this for deletion -- only four examples, no real work done in six weeks or so, and the description basically boils down to "the opposite of a robotic angel".

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

Just nuke everything. The wiki doesn't need any new articles, you can run in circles on a dozen of pages. ;]

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Are you just gonna deposit unhelpful snark everywhere?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

You want it to be a real article so bad, put the effort you make in complaining about deletion nominations into actually making an article workable. At this point you're starting to turn into expected background noise -- I honestly think you'd complain about a proposal to delete a blank page.

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

I did exactly this, but it doesn't work. :]

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

And on a serious note, at a casual glance three of the four current examples would basically just be the Mechanical Abomination trope, under a different name and specific to devil-based imagery. Outside of the Futurama robot devil, I don't see those examples being distinct enough.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Good point.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Too Rare to Trope, then. May as well move the examples that can be moved, then toss the page.

(And I agree that TBeholder has been exhibiting a serious attitude issue lately. But that's a discussion for a thread in the appropriate Forum board.)

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

I am the one with attitude issue now? Huh. Thus, trying to sneak something under demands to fix things when the site doesn't quite work, and then when someone asks what's the hell, losing it and starting an inane rant with internet mind-reading accusations is not an attitude issue, it's entirely okay. While an offer to stop pretences and just do whatever without fig leaves is an attitude issue. Or what? Please clarify.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

MOD: Please document exactly when any of those things took place. Provide links to the pages.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

MOD: It's been 17 hours since I requested this documentation. The complainant has made 10 edits since then, the last four of which have been through a Tor connection (which shows that the complainant has disconnected and connected at least once since making the complaint). You have not bothered to provide any documentation for your claims. Since there is nothing to investigate, I am dismissing this complaint as apparently unfounded.

MOD: Wasting other people's time with apparently-unfounded complaints counts as being "a huge jerk", which is a violation of Rule 1 of All The Tropes' Terms of Service. This is an official warning: Stop being a huge jerk.

Oh. I was assuming that since you were referencing it, we had a page of that name. Please don't cite TVT pages in arguments like this -- it just confuses things.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Ah, my mistake. But yeah, that'd be the direction the page would inevitably go in were more examples found.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Well, I suppose we could rename this page and generalize the description - make this the Mechanical Abomination page. That would save some work in the short run.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Sounds like a plan to me.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I'm game.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Though if we're doing this, it bears to remind people that we don't copy TVT's page wholesale.

TBeholder (talkcontribs)
Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Ah. If we already have the trope, then we don't need a duplicate one.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Yeah, Robotic Demons would fall under either Mechanical Monster or Mechanical Abomination. The difference between THOSE two tropes would be "monstrous but still man-made or otherwise constructed robot" vs. "Eldritch Horror but mechanical in nature", at least on a basic level.

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

Robotic Demon vs. Mechanical Monster: could be a well-defined subtrope.

Mechanical Abomination vs. Mechanical Monster: difference is not well defined, thus these would overlap a lot.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Fair, I didn't explain it well enough.

A Mechanical Monster would be some tiers above a mere mechanical mook and employed as a sort of "boss", thus meaning they're more unique and less prone to the flaws of mass-production or Conservation of Ninjitsu, and are suitably monstrous and inhuman in appearance or power to boot. It'll be much more durable and persistent than the assembly line Mecha Mook, and might exhibit some rudimentary levels of intelligence, sentience or sapience at the least, up to being potentially humanlike. Think something like Amazo.

A Mechanical Abomination would be just that - a Cosmic Horror-level quasi-Eldritch machine; Mechanical Monsters have to obey at least some form of technological and/or physical laws, and the Mechanical Abomination eschews that thoroughly by operating on incomprehensible levels in both technological power and/or intelligence. Said intelligence can also enhance the "abominable" feel by allowing it to operate on a level that's close to humanity, but still more than 'alien' enough that it becomes terrifying. Think Skynet.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Okay, I'm going to fight my way through the slavering horde editing this page round-the-clock and turn it into "Mechanical Abomination", which we can then take in a generic kind of direction.
