- In a variation of this trope, tornado chasers are now popularly characterized as driving red pickup trucks in reference to this film.
- Too Soon: While not with the film itself, the Universal Studios Florida attraction based on the film was originally slated to open in March 1998, but was pushed back several months out of respect, because in the February of that same year there had been an outbreak of tornadoes in Central Florida that claimed 42 lives and injured 260 others, the deadliest outbreak in Florida history.
