Mobius, 2109. The planet is split between two superpowers: the Kingdom of Acorn, and the Republic of Mobius. The Republic split from the Kingdom in 1985, using technology and doctrine that was definitely not native to the time compared to us. After the Kingdom admitted defeat in 1992, both sides began a long period of cold war after learning the secrets of nuclear weaponry.

Meanwhile on Earth, humanity is on the verge of unlocking warp gate technology in the 2010s after discovering that combining the Chaos Emeralds with the Large Hadron Collider created a wormhole. Chaos Emeralds, Mobian artifacts that were displaced spatially and temporally in the 1940s when Kingdom explorers removed them from their shrine. Next thing you know, they crashed into Earth on July 7th, 1947, were collected by the United States Air Force and placed in Area 51. Fearing a cataclysmic disaster, the LHC was shut down and a project began to construct another in space.

The warp gate is completed sometime in the 2060s, prompting an expeditionary fleet led by U.S Air Force Colonel Franklin Robotnik into the gate, which dropped the fleet near Mobius, where the Kingdom and Republic were on the verge of nuclear exchange. Colonel Robotnik demanded an audience with their leaders and made it clear that the first nation to let a nuke off its chain would face the wrath of the human fleet. The Kingdom of Acorn attempted to persuade the humans into helping them bring the 'rebellious' Republic to order. Fortunately Colonel Robotnik knew better. With that all said and done, peace was finally brought to Mobius.

As for the Kingdom? It was placed under a technological embargo from 2069 until the death of King Frederick Acorn and the crowning of his son Maximilian Acorn in 2085. Since then, relations between the Kingdom and the Republic (as well as Earth) flourished. They are at their peak in 2109, where both nations have greatly benefited from the Earth-cultivated technology jump. Suddenly and unexpectedly, King Max dies and his son Crown Prince Elias takes the throne. Soon afterward Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a Department of Defense computer scientist (and the son of the aforementioned Colonel) disappears while working on a revolutionary military A.I known as ADAM. The Pentagon hastily puts their primary defense contractor, Zenith Defense Industries to work, in order to finish his project while they investigate his disappearance.

Enter 20 year old Mobian fox Miles William "Tails" Prower a rising star in ZDI's pool of freelance scientists and the most qualified to take up Ivo's mantle, having actually produced an AI based on a fork of ADAM. This fork, known as NICOLE was created in conjunction with Ivo's cousin, Maria Robotnik. Suspecting that Ivo is still alive and in the hands of a foreign power, Tails sends NICOLE out onto the Internet to find him.
