Rosario + Vampire/Fanfic Recs

Revision as of 07:48, 9 April 2014 by Dai-Guard (talk | contribs) (Mass update links)

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here:

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Rosario to Vampire Fan Fics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business. You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

He Who Fights Monsters by Hawker 748

  • Recommended by: Daniel 14541, Sithking Zero
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairing: None overall though Tsukune/Keito at the moment (to his dismay)!
  • Synopsis: A what if taken to its logical extreme. What if Tsukune had not been crashed into by Moka on his first day but still decided to stay. What would he do in such a situation. Mostly a thought piece asking, what would you do to survive in that setting?
  • Comments: Very good characterization of Tsukune, the reasoning it puts forth for Tsukune to stay at Youkai academy makes this Tsukune more realistic then the one in the manga and anime funnily enough.
    • User:Tikigod 784: Seconded. The author takes the idea of being in a "school of monsters" to it's more horrific extreme. This isn't just due to the existence of said monsters in the school, but due to the fact that Tsukune is becoming more and more desensitized to violence and murder in order to survive in the environment, hence the title of the fic.
    • Lustheron: Thirded. This story is basically For Want of a Nail but that minor difference has made the story almost unrecognizable from the original series. It's only[1] three chapters long so far but Tsukune is vastly different than canon, including stealing items to use as makeshift weapons or learn about various monsters, joining the cross-country club to get in better shape, and killing four students to stay alive.
    • Lazarus Drake While I usually like Hawker's fics, he has moments when he exaggerates characters' behavior, for the sake of drama. Also, I can't say that Tsukune's reactions are unrealistic; however they generally manifest so fast only in correlation with other, deeper traumas. To summarize, I think this nail is far too small for the changes it supposedly provoked.
    • Sithking Zero A very interesting story, spawned from a slightly chilling piece of Fridge Logic: This is a world where Tsukune didn't have the protection of the "S-Class monster, the Vampire!" to keep him safe. Without that, he's far more paranoid and unlikely to reach out to others. Plus, all the romantic comedy stuff we see in the main series? That's non-existent here. All the horror elements lurking in the background that weren't noticed over the Fan Service or the awkward attempts at flirting are brought to the fore. Plus, in the main series, Tsukune has a little bit of a reputation. He's gotta be strong to attract so many cute, ultra-powerful monster girls, right? Here, he has no such luxury. He has to do what it takes to survive.
      • Addendum to my (Sithking Zero) review, we need a trope page for this thing. It's too good and too... different to not have one.
      • (cherico) I second the motion for a trope page.
      • (Lustheron) Thirded. It also just had one hell of a Wham! Episode. Tsukune encountered and killed Inner-Moka. It gets worse; it's implied that before Tsukune removed her Rosario, Moka was going to confess that she liked him.
      • (Daniel14541) becouse of said episode your milage may now vary. Killing off Moka was a bit contrived and unlikely in this case so you might have trouble with your willing suspension of disbelief also.
    • (rksehz) A bit of Fridge Brilliance occurs when a simple question is asked: Is this what happened to Hokuto to turn him into what he became?
    • (Maiko2853) (Link) I've started the page, but I need help completing it people. Well you, my fellow tropers, please assist me?

Crossovers

Big Human on Campus by Black Dragon6

  • Recommended by Darkholm, ijp92
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Ranma gets booted out of Furinkan after dealing with Saffron, and ends up on the bus to a new school called Youkai Academy, meeting a rather timid guy named Tsukune on the way. At least this place can't be worse than Furinkan, right?
  • Comments: Thankfully this fic doesn't use that tiresome and enraging formula of replacing Tsukune with a character from some other anime. Tsukune and Ranma go to the school together and build up a companionable friendship. Tsukune retains Moka's affections, and Kurumu's as well, but I can't really tell with the other girls. The characterizations are believable, the dialogue is entertaining, and I have yet to spot a spelling or grammar error. The characters act much as you would expect them too and it is especially funny to watch Ranma try to convince people he's human while simultaneously destroying every enemy he encounters.
    • User:Comartemis: Seconded. HARD. Black Dragon has one of the best senses of humor I've ever encountered and it comes across wonderfully here, whether Ranma's curb-stomping the students, trying to survive having Jadeite and Richard for teachers, dealing with the spiders in his and Tsukune's dorm room, or engaging in all-out cross-campus prank warfare with Yukari, every chapter is loaded to the gills with Crowning Moments of Funny. Definitely a good way to brighten up your day, and best of all chapter 3's author notes indicate that Dragon's been reading the manga, so he's clearly not basing this on the decay-ridden anime adaptation.
    • Now has a troper page in need of love: Big Human On Campus (Fanfic
    • ijp92: there is absolutely nothing about this fic that I don't like. I can't even begin to describe its awesomeness. Everything Black Dragon does in this fic works.

Rosario + Kiva by Kamen Rider Chrome

  • Recommended by AndyLA
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: What if Wataru Kurenai had enrolled in Youkai Academy instead of Tsukune? This story is dedicated not only to rewriting R+V with another love interest for the girls, but Wataru's exploits are also brought over to this new environment.
  • Comments: Okay, so it's Strictly Formula for a R+V fanfic as the guy above complained. But damn, it is well-written and does a much better job than just picking up the anime's transcripts and slapping Wataru in Tsukune's place. It's not just about the girls competing for his affection, it also has them getting involved in Wataru's life as Kiva, fighting Checkmate Four and all. Oh, and Taiga Nobori, a.k.a. Saga, a.k.a. the Current King, shows up at the Academy and develops a crush on Moka, which makes the love polygon all the more interesting. Sure, this fic has instances of Too Long; Didn't Dub, but still, it's an enjoyable read.

Lonesome Souls by NoMoreSanity

  • Recommended by ultimomant
  • Status: on hiatus
  • Pairing: Starkiller/Mizore
  • Synopsis: Vader's apprentice, Starkiller goes off to a strange new world. Will he find acceptance, friendship and even love there? All the while the battle for the galaxy and more begins, as Emperor Palpatine plans the destruction of all who stand in the way of his Empire.
  • Comments: Palpatine's dialogue is genius, he's hilarious while at the same time remaining a Complete Monster.
    • Author here. This fic is on a 'big' delay while I'm working on other things, and considering I find this very drab, it might be rewritten in full after a while.

Monster Vampire by Impaled with Extreme Prejudice.

  • Recommended by AAKRON
  • Fandoms: Rosario to Vampire, Fate/stay night, Tsukihime
  • Synopsis: Author's Summary: As a punishment for running away from home, Akiha enrolls her elder brother in the Youkai Academy. Thus the kind hearted monster is admitted into the academy of monsters. More of a Nasu X Rosario than Tsukihime X Rosario.
  • Comments: Not what it sounds like. Rather than being your stereotypical "X replaces Tsukune" where the original Rosario+Vampire story is rehashed with a new leading character, this is more of a proper Crossover of Nasuverse and Rosario to Vampire with a completely new plot. It has been confirmed that Tsukune, Shiki, and Shirou will all be main characters in the story. The author is new, but seems to have a good grasp of writing already, and has good spelling and grammar (even though he doesn't seem to be from a native English speaking country). Haven spoken to the author extensively, I can safely say that the future for this story is looking very... Nasuverse. It's worth a read.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Thawing Permafrost by WanderingWordsmith

  • Recommended by: Technicolour Grey
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairing: OC/Mizore
  • Synopsis: Follows only Season I canon. Mizore is a teacher and there is a new human transfer, who doesn't take to Yokai as well as Tsukune. The human transfer, Dan, must overcome numerous obstacles to fit into Yokai Academy; be it life-threatening, humorous or against the red flag of his own conscience. The tale of a high school boy just trying to fit in when he's, well, different.
  • Comments: I am not one who is partial to sit and read twelve chapters of fanfiction in one sitting, but I did so here. I found the story gripping and the (so far) subtle, growing relationship between Mizore and Dan very believable and interesting. The rest of the story is also believable, with frequent references to choric characters and the struggles of Dan as he tries to fit in into a high school in which everyone wants to eat him. The writing style is effective, and the author has an effortless way with the description of characters, places and dialogue which is not only believable but relatable. On first reading I expected the protagonist, being an OC, to be rather annoying, but he is easy-going, humorous and I am glad that I am currently following him in his struggle through his joining Yokai Academy. So far there have been plot twists, cliffhangers, hidden details which I am dying to know, and I am sure that this story will still have my rapt attention for chapters to come.
    • It should be noted that this is actually a re-write of the original version that was written by Wandering Wordsmith back when he was known on fanfic as Chaosbahamut123. This is much of the reason why it's such an amazing story: The author has already been here and is ready to fix his previous mistakes. The best part about it is the fact that the romance, while still the central part of the plot, does not drown out the rest of the story. Dan's friends are critical components of his everyday life at Yokai, and the trouble he gets into is a very real part of his world and not just a device to provoke more angsty romance. All who love Mizore should read this fiction!
    • Having read the original Thawing Permafrost, I need to emphasise how this new version is more mature, more sensitive and more subtle than the previous version. There is imagery (such as the red flags) that runs through this new story, creating consistency and flow. The relationship is developing more slowly, but it feels more genuine and less cliché. The themes so far have been based on very human concepts - loneliness and acceptance. I look forward to more sensitive issues being explored and eventually overcome by the loveable characters!
    • Now has its own tropes page, and it needs a lot of help with the tropes list.

Here In My Arms" by Platinumsabr

  • Recommended by Darkholm, Dr JX 31
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Pairing: Tsukune/Harem
  • Synopsis: What laid in wait past Anti-Thesis? A choice. What lay in wait past the choice? Consequences. A future...with who? Decisions, decisions, some not up to me, show me the truth, what I'm meant to be... Tsukune becomes a vampire and has to deal with dark, new threats to his family.
  • Trope page is now here that needs more love.
  • Comments: I never thought I'd find a story where Tsukune becomes a vampire without invoking Boring Invincible Hero but this story does just that. Amazingly long in length and I have yet to spot a single grammar or spelling error. Tsukune goes up several levels of badassedry during the course of this story, all of which made this Trooper squee with delight. One of the few harem stories that doesn't reduce the girls to cardboard cut-outs or background characters. The characterizations are amazing, the dialogue is enthralling, and the story will put you on the edge of your seat several times. This story manages to really get across that feeling of Nakama that Tsukune and his girls have going on. Warning: There are gratuitous lemon scenes in this story, one EIGHTEEN PAGES long (pages not chapters). The author told me they wanted to add some "tasteful romance" to the Rosario+ Vampire section.
    • AJC 46: this is just a amazing well done fic that gets away from the boring "Tsukune becomes a vampire and gets a power level boost to curbstop anything worse than what Inner Moka does in the adaptation decayed anime except when the plot calls for it." with the first serious fight he gets in with inner moka is so well done that you can almost feel the power of 2 extremely powerful beings going all out it also is high on my good reads in the fics of this series because it keeps the chars as close to there canon manga natures and personality as possible with minimal derailment of their characters (abet unavoidable given that all fics have to decay somewhat in this regard.) the lemony parts are done rather well and tasteful and don't come across as something forced but rather has people who have genuine feelings for each other and finally the jab in the second fight at Twilight is just too damn amusing i so suggest this as a read if your bored to death of the normal "Tsukune takes a level in badass more badass than his ghoul form one"
    • Now has its own tropes page, and it needs a lot of help with the tropes list.
    • This is one of the few Rosario + Vampire fics that I truly enjoy. The characterization is one of the major selling points of this fanfic, and the dialogue is so expertly expressed and detailed that I actually felt tears swelling up in my eyes on one of the many Tear Jerkers of the fic. Truly a good read.

Stranger in a Strange World" by Meatbomb

  • Recommended by Darkholm, Daniel 14541
  • Status: Completed.
  • Pairing: Tsukune/Kurumu
  • Synopsis: Tsukune Aono: not human, but not a monster, either. Does he pretend to be human? Pretend to be a monster pretending to be human, pretending to be a monster? What?
  • Comments: A wonderful story with great dialogue and characterizations. It manages to make the pairing enjoyable by not marginalizing or bashing any of the other characters. Tsukune uses his brain to defeat most of his brawny opponents. Tsukune is different, but no so different as to be a completely different character from Canon Tsukune. A worthwhile read.
  • Seconded. Though what Tsukune is can be figured out in no time, the details still make for an interesting reveal--this went on my favorites list.

Know Your Place by Arakan7

  • Recommended by Darkholm
  • Pairing: Inner Moka/Tsukune
  • Synopsis: Know your place - It is her favorite phrase but just what does it mean for Tsukune? A peek into Inner Moka as both she and Tsukune try to determine it for themselves.
  • Comments: A touching, fluffy oneshot on the relationship between Tsukune and Moka. The ending made me go, "D'awwwww. . ."

The Mighty Vampire Aono by Lord of the Land of Fire

  • Recommended by Electroninja, Daniel 14541
  • "Pairing": Moka/Tsukune
  • "Synopsis": An AU in which Tsukune ends up as a Vampire instead of a Ghoul. This results in many changes to the story line including the start of a relationship with Moka. But now that he has won her heart, he must do something even harder: deal with her family.
  • "Comments" A very interesting fic with very good characterization of all the characters that manages to keep all the girls sympathetic despite the afore-mentioned pairing. As the fic was started well before Akuha was introduced, Moka's eldest sister is instead an OC named Ria, but she is interesting in her own right. Although it can be rather lemony at times, it does not take away from the excellent dram of the overall story.

Out of Nightmares by DarkWynn

  • Recommended by: pr0pms, Daniel 14541
  • Status: Completed sequel in progress
  • Pairing: Tsukune/Moka/Kurumu/Mizore
  • Synopsis: A monster feeding on nightmares attacks the academy and no-one makes a better target than the nakama.
  • Comments: The synopsis really doesn't do it justice. A far more 'realistic' view, in keeping with the series, of the problems in a Tenchi Solution. Has an over arching plot running through both this and its sequel Into Dreams. No Lemon and exceptional characterisation I can rate this no higher.

Resolve by ShadowFaux

  • Recommended by: lowsoman
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Implied Tsukune/Inner!Moka
  • Synopsis: Tsukune's will finally breaks during his training after Inner Moka ridicules him for his obvious aversion to hurting just about anything.
  • Comments: Based off of the beginning of Chapter 18, Season II, this takes a look into what could have been if Tsukune actually answered Inner Moka's question. Even if the flow of the story is a little off, and part of it is a bit sappy, it's still an enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

AU

Alternative Universe

Diplomatic_Relations by Stormedge

  • Recommended by: Endle
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairing: Doesn't seem to have settled on one yet
  • Synopsis: Tsukune Aono, wizard extraordinaire, has a mission: Attempt to prove that peace between the hostile Youkai and magic communities is possible. The only way to achieve this? Attend a boarding school for monsters.
  • Comments: An interesting story that creates quite a large, intriguing AU. Mage!Tsukune manages to avoid typical Gary Stu traits and the magic system is quite well explained throughout the fic so far, being quite similiar in nature to Vancian Magic. Also, his familiar is the very embodiment of Deadpan Snarker. A worthwhile story to pick up.

VampireTimeTricker by ArnaudB

  • Recommended by: sweece, lowsoman
  • Status: ongoing
  • Pairing: Tsukune/Moka
  • Synopsis: Tsukune Aono, a 'regular' human enters a Youkai School where he discovers Monsters. Before he can choose to stay or leave, a dangerous vampire takes him as a familiar for his blood. Yet he only has 681 days or less before his end...
  • Comments: This is an interesting and original AU take on the R+V story. It incorporates several of the major events & characters from the manga while still remaining appreciably different and unique. The one major problem I had with this work is that grammatically it's rather sloppy. Still, this alone should not be reason to avoid reading it.
    • lowsoman: Extremely well thought out, with an interesting take on Tsukune's relationship with Moka, this story makes me want to shout to the heavens. Despite being a little darker and edgier than the original manga, it has it's still loaded with C Mo Fs. Also, the characters are actually worth something more than things to throw random plot-points at. As noted above, it'd make an English-speaking Grammar Nazi weep, but the author hails from France, so it's excusable. Definitely worth the read.

Youkai to Vampire by Ou-Rex

  • Recommended by: lowsoman
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairing: Tsukune/Harem
  • Synopsis: Set in a universe where monsters and humans have the choice to attend 'closed' or 'mixed' schools in the human world, Tsukune Aono, an 'emotionless' shell, attends Gokuen with his middle-school classmate, Moka Akashiya. After being subject to an attack by Saizou, the Chairman's son, Moka's seal was temporarily broken. Before being able to take the young man's life, she's stopped by a command from the battered Tsukune. Who is he really, and what strange, oppressive power does he contain?
  • Comments: At 189,369 words spread over 51 chapters, it's quite the lengthy read. It incorporates some plot points from canon while taking its own unique path. Darker and edgier than even the manga, with multiple rape attempts and deaths, not to mention more than a little sexism, it's definitely for more mature readers. Despite that, it's an engaging read. Note: does contain some lolicon. The only real problem I have is that the author couldn't seem to decide on a third-person past narrative, or a third-person present narrative until chapters 48+, where it's more consistent.

Never Give Up by Gosh Darn It

  • Recommended by: sweece
  • Status: Completed
  • Pairing: Mainly Tsukune/Kurumu although its only light shipping and is basically a friendship/humour fic
  • Synopsis: Kurumu has an idea, one involving turning her Chosen One into an incubus. One-Shot w/ Extras.
  • Comments: A short read but great fun. This fic is well written, light hearted and has a fairly original idea (for a rosario fic) at the heart of its plot.
