The Dresden Files/Fanfic Recs

Revision as of 21:32, 21 June 2016 by Gethbot (talk | contribs) (clean up)

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here:

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Fan Fics, all of which have been signed. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be Zapped (wiki). Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Authors, and Websites

Little Chicago

  • Recommended by User:Rin Simyaldee
  • Little Chicago has written a brilliant five part series (the last of which is still a WIP) that is honestly the best Dresden fic I have ever seen, as well as one of the best in general. The tone, writing and characterization are as close to perfectly original flavor as it is possible to get, and the fics are suitably awesome. The series takes place soon after Turn Coat, and so far it seems to be an AU ignoring Changes. So good, I wasted a large amount of time just sitting, reading madly until I finished the entire series in one sitting. Very highly recommended.

Thomas A

  • Recommended by User:Regina Titania
  • Thomas A has written a brilliant novel-length series (the latest of which is a WIP) which shares Harry's laughable sense of humour. We have The Carpenter Blueprints, a whole series of fics centered around Molly Carpenter, apprentice to Chicago's only professional wizard private investigator. In Axis and Allies,, we see Molly Carpenter striking out on her own to save the day when the wizard's away against a few Nazi sorcerers, golems and an Outsider. Semper Fidelis shows us our perky wizard apprentice racing against the clock to stop a faerie war from starting after an assassination attempt on the Summer Lady and Knight. A great read when you're waiting for Ghost Story is the third installment, Life After Death.
    • Overall, a must-read for fans of The Dresden Files. We see Molly, perky wizard apprentice, strike out as an independent contractor when Harry's away...and we can tell that Harry's a pretty good/bad influence on Molly too. Indeed, even when facing against an Outsider, or the pissed-off Lady of the Summer Storm the Abagalesidhe, Molly still quips pop culture references into their faces and saves the day...albeit with less Dresdenesque shenanigans.
      • Eh, this is a serious case of YMMV. I couldn't get into the first one, because Thomas A is apparently incapable of using contractions.
      • Seconded. Bad grammar and insane walls of run-on text make this unintelligible.
        • Thirded. These fanfics are really quite terrible. In my opinion. So... when will this be zapped?

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Broken Mirror by Little Chicago

  • Recommended by Surtr Noir.
  • Status: Complete
  • Series: Yes [4 Additional stories]
  • Synopsis: What started as a small fic it converted in an entire AU series of small novels about the favorite Wizard for Hire. After Turn Coat Harry receives a desperate call from Kincaid. Ivy has been kidnapped again and it rest into Harry and Company to save her before is too late.
    • Comment: Is a magnificent story, capturing the nonsensical, wry humor and horrific dramatic flair of the original works. You really can feel the true essence of Harry in every line, his sardonic humor and the huge scope of the supernatural world. Time travel, the other vampire courts, the Black Council, eons long plots, the Outer beings, enemies from the past looking for revenge—it has it all. While it started small, it has expanded to another 5 fics, each one adding a new layer of the plots and lies that is about to culminate in the last instalment, Broken Circle. A must read, if only to get an idea of how to write the third person Noir-esque monologue of the Dresden Verse.

A Personage of Noble Rank and Title by Priscellie

  • Recommended by User:GG Crono
  • Synopsis: The story of Warden Donald Morgan, from his early life to his term as a soldier during the Great War up to the events of the books, shedding a bit of light on his life, his motivations, and his hatred for Harry.
    • Seconded by Locnil. I honestly did not see the twist ending coming, and a great job was done explaining why Morgan hated Dresden so much (as well as Morgan's behavior in Summer Knight). Also a decent romance story, and a nice bit of Fridge Brilliance about Morgan and Dresden in Turn Coat.

The Other Son by Priscellie

  • Recommended by Kat
  • Synopsis: Thomas Raith, and his half-brother Harry Dresden.
  • Comments: This is a frankly brilliant exploration of Thomas's character, as well as his thoughts about and interactions with his spoiler for Blood Rites. Just made of fabulous.

Survival by Kat

  • Recommended by Priscellie
  • Synopsis: The things we do to survive. Maggie Lefay and Lord Raith.
  • Comments: This is a tremendous gut-punch of a story: sickening and brutal and extraordinarily powerful.Warning: Contains explicit rape and cursing.
    • Antiguo: Eh, Narmy and kinda non-canon. After all, the King of the White Court shouldn't be so blatantly obvious and evil, more like a thug (or a pimp) instead of the bewitching manipulator. Seems pointless violent for the sake of drama.
      • Seconded by Fillede Marius. Though Lord Raith is a Complete Monster and Manipulative Bastard, it's all about subtlety; he wouldn't want to be as banal and base about it as compared to others in his court and other courts in general. Keep in mind that the Raiths actually pride themselves on forcing their victims to feel pleasure; it's mentioned in Turn Coat, I believe.
        • So why is this still here?

Good Timing by A Wandering Ministrel

  • Recommended by Jack Inqu, Seconded by Sinesofinsanity who goes through moments of not being able to remember whether or not this scene was written by Jim Butcher or not.
  • Synopsis: Most dangerous job in the world? Alaskan crab fisherman have nothing on members of Harry Dresden's army.
  • Comments: A small slice of adventure set between White Night and Small Favor. Includes Harry, Thomas, Murphy, Ramirez, Molly, and Mouse.

Duty by Crevan Fox

  • Recommended by Ikki
  • Synopsis: Character study of Michael Carpenter.
  • Comments: For 370 words it's extraordinarily heart wrenching and gut punching.

Famous Last Words by Incandescent Kitsune

  • Recommended by Tempus Corvus
  • Synopsis: When Harry and his friends are captured by Nicodemus, Harry ends up choosing some rather...odd last words.
  • Comments:Crackfic of the best sort. It's short, and hilarious. I could say more, but I'd spoil it.
    • Seconded by fortyCakes.

New York Magician by The Custodian

  • Recommended by User:Jonn
  • Synopsis: A lifelong New Yorker makes deals with ancient, powerful beings and solves mysteries.
  • Comments: While not strictly a fanfic, the series clearly takes a lot of inspiration from our favorite snarky detective. It's well-written enough to be a series in its own right, barring the obvious copyright concerns

Reunion

  • Recommended by DARTHYAN and User:Silverwind 91
  • Synopsis: Maggie has known who her father was for five years. When she finally confronts him, she's only given reason to hate him. But what happens when the only man who can help her and her school is her father? Takes place twenty years after the events of Changes
  • Comments: A gut-punching story based around a great concept. The interactions between Harry and Maggie are phenomenally well-written, especially when Maggie reveals that she still had nightmares from her time as a Red Court captive, as well as her anger when Harry confesses to killing Susan. The Harry Potter jokes are also pretty funny and well placed, and Maggie is a well fleshed out character.
  • Now has a sequel known as And Now We Dance, also recommended by User:Silverwind 91
    • And now we dance Synopsis: As the Reynolds' School of Magic prepares for its Midsummer Ball, a Warden turns up dead and the evidence points to the school. Can Harry both catch the bad guy and protect his daughter as the White Council closes in? Sequel to Reunion.
  • YMMV, some of the early writing is VERY flawed.

Cardsharps

  • Recommended by Razorsmile
  • Synopsis: Dresden Files AU. Harry becomes Winter Knight after killing Justin DuMorne.
  • Comments: Appears to be yet another Dresden/Marcone fic in the offing but thus far, it's gen. Angsty gen, but gen nonetheless. Harry is as much in-character as you'd expect from someone who has been the Winter Knight since age 16; in other words, broken as hell and considerably powerful. At least he still has Bob and Michael.

Life in Medieval Chicago by melannen

  • Recommended by Razorsmile
  • Synopsis: So I'm the only spiritwalker north of the Oyo who has no village and works only for hire. I'm not proud of that, but despite what the priests might tell you, the medicine paths still work when you walk them for pay. And a man's gotta eat.
  • Comments: Dresden Files AU set in the geographical location of Chicago ... circa 800AD. Hilarious yet meticulously researched fun.

The Fable of Joyful Wing by shiplizard

  • Recommended by Razorsmile
  • Synopsis/Author's Chapter Notes: It started when I was reading 'Bridge of Birds' and enjoying the names of the characters. Pretty Ping, Miser Shen, Fang's Flea and Fang's Fawn—and the narrator, Number Ten Ox. Descriptive and enjoyable. And then I started making up Chinese-Fable names for Dresden Files characters. And then I had to put a story to the names. And then ten thousand words later I'd written a quest fable with a bunch of references to other books and movies because why not.: .
  • Comments: Dresden Files AU set in a magical ancient China. Pure unbridled brilliance.

Dress Up by Qualapec the She-Wolf

  • Recommended by Anti Jack
  • Synopsis: Molly plays dress up. Because we all know the duster is the coolest part of the outfit.
  • Comments: A short and hilarious fic. You just know Molly couldn't resist doing this at least once.

Dresden Files Comedic Shorts by Thrythlind

Bridal Shower by Thrythlind

  • Recommended by bissek
  • Synopsis: It started out with a simple case to find a missing knife. Then Dresden got called in to look at a corpse that had fangs and no blood in its body. Now he found himself walking into a case the White Council thought it had closed centuries before.
  • Comments: The story captures the feel of the Dresden universe beautifully. Mouse seems to be enjoying the status he attains during the fic far too much.

Fair Vote by Nick Chiseler

  • Recommended by pluma and Razor Smile.
  • Synopsis: The story isn't about Dresden. It's about a runaway wizard apprentice, George Saga, who, in the process of disentangling himself from a star-crossed selkie, ends up lost within the dark alleys of Miami politics. With a twist of demon.
  • Comments: This author's worldbuilding is simply amazing. He seamlessly inserts his OC (possibly the coolest OC I've ever read) into the Dresdenverse. The writing captures the dry humor and sheer "O SHI-" of canon, and it shows that everything bad doesn't always happen to Harry. Also: this is a long fic. Over 120,000 words. And well worth the read.
    • Novel-length work in pdf format, this tells the tale of a runaway wizard apprentice, George Saga (True Name something else). Through some fault of his own, Dorje (he's from Tibet) gets himself involved with selkies, White Court, demon-enhanced lawyers, the differences between Asian magical traditions and the Western variant we've seen so much of in canon, Red Court, certain prominent figures in organized crime, dark wizards ... and Miami politicians. In other words, shenanigans worthy of Harry Dresden himself. Highly recommended.
    • Now has a Trope Page.

Somnus by A Wandering Minstrel

  • Recommended by Veloren
  • Synopsis: An unusual epidemic has hit Chicago and Harry's in the thick of it. TVVERSE (with some crossover to the books).
  • Comments: Completed fic. Mild Harry/Murphy.

Slash Archive by Totenkinder Madchen

  • Recommended by Veloren
  • Synopsis: The Archive discovers Slash Fic. Kincaid is slightly traumatized.
  • Comments: Utter, brilliant crack.

Crossovers

Deep as the Sea (FF.net Link), by Ryuugi

  • Recommended by Salvls
  • Sypnosis: 'And I've removed the filter from your eyes which covered them before, so now, you'll easily distinguish between gods and men.' After the power of the Mist began to weaken, the demigods found themselves in the middle of a whole new world.
  • Tags: Crossover
  • Comments: A Dresden/Jackson crossover.
  • YMMV heavily. Much more of a Percy Jackson fic than a DF one (main characters from the Dresden Verse have yet to appear), the characters are pretty much godmodding (pardon the pun), and Percy is very OC.

The Dresden Omens by shiplizard

  • Recommended by kph2pt0
  • Synopsis: Crossover with Good Omens. In which a demon (who did not fall from grace so much as saunter vaguely downward) is sent to tempt a hero (who's reluctant at best) and has some trouble with the job.
  • Comments: Contains a surprise pairing (Harry/Marcone), and a fusion of Jim Butcher's snarky humor and Good Omens' wit. The crossover is well done and the characters are portrayed perfectly.
    • Er... Have you seen the Ship Fic section? Ain't no surprise pairing there.
      • The fic in question was among the first slash fics to be written in the entire fandom and possibly the first with that pairing.
      • This, and the fact that the pairing is sort of sprung at you at the end, and there's very little hint of it until that point.

The Denarian Renegade by Shezza88

  • Recommended by Jinx, Seconded by User:Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: A Crossover with Harry Potter, in which a seven-year-old Harry Potter finds a blackened silver coin at a low moment in his life.
  • Comments: Harry is delightfully snarky and beautifully balanced between good and evil. It also has the best written Dumbledore I've ever read.
    • User:Looney Toons: And don't miss its sequels, The Denarian Knight (complete) and The Denarian Lord (complete). There's also a collection of extras, The Denarian Omakes.
      • Revlid: Please note that your mileage may heavily vary with this story—Harry Potter is a fairly blatant Mary Sue, and his "snark" mostly comes across as simply being rude and mindlessly arrogant, which aren't appealing traits for the main character of a story spanning 30+ chapters to begin with. The final twist in the first story is also eye-rollingly stupid; see "Mary Sue". In short, if you're hoping for Harry's attitude or the attitudes of others toward him to change in any way from the first few chapters onward... Look elsewhere.
      • It's also worth noting that, while this story is worth a read, it's not really a Dresden Files story. It has a few Dresden characters in it, but most are either OCs or badly OOC by virtue of not existing when the story started.
      • However, in response to Revlid, the story does not claim that Harry is in fact a Deadpan Snarker. It is very clear that he's just an arrogant kid, and most of the other characters (especially his Denarian) note that "you know, just saying that Dumbledore is a pedophile who has sex with a turkey isn't actually funny"; he himself notes that he doesn't actually do sardonic too well. He also couldn't easily be described as a Mary Sue: At best he's overconfident and frequently gets his arse kicked; at worst he's an unsympathetic Jerkass who few people like particularly and who isn't shilled by the author or other characters.
  • Now has three sequels, The Denarian Knight, The Denarian Lord, and lastly The Denarian Apocalypse.

Harry Dresden: Agent of NERV by Yuffiek666

  • Recommended by Darkblade
  • Synopsis: Crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion of all things. Things changed in the year 2000 when humans awoke the outside known as Adam and caused Second impact which killed two billion people, flooded the world and all but destroyed the Sidhe. Years after the Second Impact, SEELE's Head of North American Resource Management and all around criminal scum Johnny Marcone is seemingly murdered by being reduced to an unknown orange liquid. Harry as usually getting caught in the middle of this mess finds himself sent to Tokyo 3 to investigate NERV.
  • Comments: A Crack Fic Gone Horribly Right. The author took great care to almost seamlessly merge the two very distinctive universes. There are some plot conveniences such as Bob's new found Otaku-dom (which has made him fluent in Japanese and capable of tutoring Harry in it) and Ebenezer making Harry an anti-Walking Techbane watch but they only serve to bring both Harry and the cast of Evangelion into more trouble I am willing to overlook them.

Iced Chaos by Lalunaticscribe

  • Recommended by Zecore Zecron
  • Synopsis: The third crossover with Bleach written by this author. Captain Hitsugaya is missing in Chicago and Harry is hired to find him. Hilarity ensues.
  • Comments: The story seems like a crack-fic but is much better than it sounds.

Dedication Through Light And Darkness: by Lalunaticscribe

  • Recommended by Zecorezecron
  • Synopsis: Duel monsters have come out to play. And since Harry is such a lucky guy, they come to Chicago. And unfortunately, it's not because he's the supernatural world's must-see-atraction of the Midwest.
  • Comments: Freakin' hilarious. The author somehow manages to merge very different worlds in a way that makes sense.

Handle With Care by jedibuttercup

  • Recommended by Razorsmile
  • Synopsis: Ms. Summers might as well have worn a sign reading 'Danger to Life and Limb' in large, neon print. Fusion-fic.
  • Comments: A nigh-seamless fusion of the Dresden Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the events of Buffy up to Season Six happened within the metaphysical rules of the Dresdenverse. Buffy joins Team Dresden for the raid on Arctis Tor, Spike and Angel are White Court and Willow ... well. Ships Harry/Buffy.

Forever! by Chengar Quordath

Fallen Stars by Shockz

  • Recommended by SAMAS
  • Synopsis: Protecting an innocent young woman from the magical authorities is nothing new to Harry. Problem is, this time the girl is one Nanoha Takamachi. Harry finds himself up against a civilization that makes the White Council look downright primitive, but Nanoha does have some friends in her corner, and Harry can teach the TSAB a few things about magic they might have overlooked.

The Master of Death (Not yet fully updated FF.Net version) by Ryuugi

Ghost Story (FF.Net version) by Nuts!/Norwest (TV Tropes page)

  • Recommended by User:Gentlemens Dame 883
  • Synopsis: Mass Effect crossover, spoilers for the end of Changes and start of the eponymous canonical book. Harry Dresden is dead, and so is John Shepard circa Bring Down the Sky. Orders on high come in to send them back to the land of the living... The other guy's land of the living.

The Dresden Fillies: Strange Friends by psychicscubadiver

  • Recommended by omegaman
  • Synopsis: Crossover with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. While escaping denizens of the Nevernever, Harry Dresden ends up in Equestria. While his first encounter with the Mane Cast begins rocky, he begins to befriend them, and none to soon. Two of the Mane Cast's old antagonists return to threaten them, and Harry finds himself helping them in their quest to stop them, all the while trying to reconcile his methods with the world of Equestria.
  • Comments: A fantastic fic. Dresden's characterization is absolutely spot on, almost perfect. All of his character attributes, his snarkiness, loyalty to his friends, his Good Is Not Nice attitude, and his struggles with darkness, are exquisitely captured. Seriously, it has to be read to be believed. The Dresden-centric parts of the story almost read like Butcher's prose. Having not seen the show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic myself, I cannot speak on whether or not the ponies' characterization is as good as Dresden's, but as characters who have real personalities and contribute to the story psychicscubadiver writes them quite well. The fic is completed, an a sequel, The Dresden Fillies: False Masks, is being written.
  • Now with a trope page!

Higher Stakes: A Fanfiction of the Dresden Files by Wild Paladin

  • Recommended by Grey Writer
  • Synopsis: Crossover with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Takes the place of (meaning "completely ignores") Ghost Story and ignores the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight comics after the arc titled Time of Your Life. In the last stages of returning from the death he suffered at the end of Changes, Harry Dresden meets Buffy Summers, her sister Dawn, and their friend Xander Harris in the Nevernever. To Harry, Buffy and Co. are known TV figures, and Xander has read some of the Dresden Files novels. The Scooby Gang help Harry return home, and become a part of his life, eventually help him solve his murder.
  • Comments: A very credible substitute for Ghost Story. The author does an excellent job of imitating Jim Butcher's "voice," works Buffy, Xander and Dawn seamlessly into the Dresden-verse, and offers a more satisfying ending to the Bt VS:S8 comics than the actual comics did. It's a little uneven in the middle, and the author does some things I don't think Jim Butcher ever would—but the internal logic holds up well, and it's still a very, very good read, worth it just for the combat scenes and the utterly disgusting monsters. Does have a love relationship between Harry and Buffy that grows believably. The story is complete.

Shipping Fics

Eats, Shoots, and Leaves by Binz and Shiplizard

  • Recommeded by Lucia Zephyr
  • Pairings: Harry/The Erlking, Harry/Kincaid
  • Synopsis: Harry is invited to dinner and a show, not entirely in that order.
  • Comments: Awesome, hilarious look at a possible Knight Harry who's gotten over some of his Issues with sexuality and chastity. Started the fandom trend of Winter Bike Harry, and is still probably the best of that fic type. Most of Binz and Shiplizard's work explores concepts regarding sex positivity; this is the most well-known of that collection. Check it out.

Four Reasons Long-Distance Relationships Don't Work Out (And One Reason They Definitely Do) by Kat

  • Recommended by Priscellie
  • Pairing(s): Carlos Ramirez/Molly Carpenter
  • Synopsis: Molly and Carlos attempt to make their relationship work.
  • Comments: This is a hilarious and insightful look at the way Molly Carpenter and Carlos Ramirez might cope with a long-distance relationship.

The Spirit and the Letter by lightgetsin

  • Recommended by Ikki
  • Pairing(s): Harry Dresden/John Marcone
  • Synopsis: Harry Dresden fails Gender Studies 101, and that doesn't change when he temporarily swaps sexes.
  • Comments: Genderswap story that turned out to be both hilarious and hot. Must warn potential readers that the sex in this story is between girl!Harry and Marcone and not boy!Harry. Spoilers for Changes.
    • Now has a sequel, A New Covenant
    • Recommended by User:Lucy Zephyr
    • Pairing(s): Again, Dresden/Marcone
    • Synopsis: It was like playing chicken with intimacy, both of us pushing and pushing and waiting to see who blinked first.
    • Comments: A continuation of the first story, this one does an even more thorough job of examining Dresden and Marcone and how the two co-exist. It's intense and a beautifully handled slow progression. Harry's POV is as pitch-perfect as ever, and the addition of Marcone's POV is handled equally well. Very worth checking out.

other things the road to hell is paved with by lucia-tanaka

  • Recommended by Anon, openseseme
  • Pairing(s): Harry Dresden/John Marcone
  • Synopsis: Another way the Baron rose to power. Another way the wizard became a Knight. Slash, mafia powerplaying, and a lot of Belligerent Sexual Tension within. AU after Fool Moon. Expanded in a book series, The Matter of Chicago.
  • Comments: A work-in-progress fic that reads like one of the books, and has already passed 70k 130K words. Slow-building, funny, and every bit as awesome as canon. Marcone gets Harry to sign on with him in Fool Moon. Completed, with following interlude, the false dichotomy of strength and weakness and Book 2, putting out your fires with gasoline, which, if its predecessor is anything to go by, is projected to be every bit a monster as Book 1. ReginaTitania(Troper)
      • One of the sexiest slash stories this troper has ever read, as well as being well thought out and funny. A must read for any Harry/Marcone shipper!

Dry Bones Can Harm No One by beachkid and shiplizard.

  • Recommended by Razor Smile
  • Pairing(s): Harry Dresden/John Marcone, Charity Carpenter/Michael Carpenter, Anastasia Luccio/Karrin Murphy, Justine/Thomas Raith, Ebenezar McCoy/McAnally, Inari Raith/Bobby/Jake, Billy Borden/Georgia Borden, Nathan Hendricks/Sigrun Gard
  • Synopsis: Post-apocalyptic Chicago: Harry Dresden, the itinerant Winter Knight, is contacted by the errant Sheriff Karrin Murphy. Something is brutally murdering people in Wisconsin, and the local militia is driving off anyone who tries to check it out. It's up to Harry to root out the threat—and figure out where his loyalties lie, between the Faerie Court he sold himself to, and the people he's always tried to save.
  • Comments: Set apparently post-Changes and definitely post-apocalypse, this fic is detailed, thorough and true in the ways the characters all react to the changed setting. The Black Court is making a huge comeback, the Summer/Winter/Wyldfae balance of power is being ... renegotiated, the Ways are now the only practical means of long-distance travel which in turn makes Wizards incredibly precious and so on. It's quite the doorstopper too. Some readers might not like some of the changes to Harry's behavior (specifically his sexuality) albeit most of that is lightly-referenced backstory. There is action and darkness, hope and romance, tragedy and characterization and creatures we haven't seen so far in the canon books (the Wendigo was especially well-done Nightmare Fuel). Highly recommended.

Cross by lightgetsin

  • Recommended by User:Lucy Zephyr
  • Pairing(s): Dresden/Marcone
  • Synopsis: “Because,” Dresden said, “you’re going to bring me back.” He hesitated, looking somewhat sour. “You’re the only one who can, apparently.”
  • Comments: Thank you, LGI. Now, no matter how awesome Ghost Story is, it will pale in comparison to this fic. Cross is a post-Changes story about Harry being dead and Marcone having to bring him back. Except how it's really not. As thefourthvine put it: "To me, this story is basically an exercise in examining how many layers of denial you can plaster over yourself before you crack into a million pieces. Answer: John Marcone is nearly there." Fucking phenomenal character examination, dealing with all the baggage that is often ignored in canon and fanon. Check. This. Out.

Enemy Mine by Rassaku

  • Recommended by User:Razor Smile
  • Pairing(s): Dresden/Marcone
  • Synopsis: Harry gets invited on a date by everyone’s favorite mob boss, and then things get weird.
  • Comments: Diverges from canon after Small Favor but echoes some of the events of Turn Coat (like the Harry/Demonreach OTP). Harry goes on a date with Marcone. Marcone arranges to have himself framed for Harry Dresden's death the next day. Then things get really weird. Features some of the best OCs I've seen in the fandom thus far (Tam Veda and the Big Bad are especially worthy of note) and is just incredibly well-written and interesting. Strongly recommended; wish the author would archive it on FF.net or AO3 for easier reading though.
    • Seconded like the fist of an angry god. Especially about the A03 thing. I need this on my Kindle, guys. You don't understand. This fic is very strong plot-wise, very Original Flavor, and manages the hottest UST you've ever read. It's incredible. -User:Lucy Zephyr
    • Now on AO3 and in downloadable PDF! Yay!

Following The Evil Overlord List by Jade_Dragoness

  • Recommended by Razorsmile
  • Pairing(s): Harry Dresden/Johnny Marcone
  • Synopsis: Evil AU. Where all the good guys are bad and the bad guys are good for the most part, and inhuman monsters are still monsters. In this ‘verse, Evil!Harry sees Marcone’s soul and really wants to make him his.
  • Comments: Retells the events of Storm Front in a world where Maggie LeFay outlived Malcolm Dresden, Harry is a wealthy warlock who models his life on the Evil Overlord List, Murphy is as corrupt as they come (albeit just as badass as in canon) and Marcone is an agent of the FBI. Essentially crack fic but a lot of fun.

The Stars and Scones Bakery and Coffee Shop by User:Lucy Zephyr / Lucia_tanaka on LJ.

  • Recommended by Flat Jean
  • Pairing(s): Harry Dresden/Johnny Marcone
  • Synopsis: In which Harry is the best baker in Chicago, but still ends up starting a few fires along the way.
  • Comments: This is a modern-day non-magical AU where Harry own and operates the coolest bakery in Chicago, with Bob his trusty barista, his loyal customers like Murphy and that annoying sonofagun Marcone who keeps on coming back. Otherwise a story where amidst cupcakes you have Harry trying to cope with his traumatic past as a survivor of abuse. This isn't a WAAAANGST fic but it's a careful, thoughtful mediation on how people cope with trauma amidst some great characterization.
    • Author here. Deeply flattered, thank you. Wanted to point out the AO3 version over here. It's a revised copy, so best to read from there. Again, thanks! 8D

Letter from the Front by J Rush

  • Recommended by frankystein123
  • Pairing: H. Dresden/A. Luccio
  • Synopsis: This takes place before White Knight. Harry is off on one of his Red Court expiditions and finds something strange in the jungle.
  • Comments: Have you ever wondered exactly what happened at Camp Kaboom? Now you know. There aren't a lot of decent fanfics detailing Harry's and Anastasia's relationship, but should had deserved more attention in the books. Rest assured though, that their relationship is the background story (so far) compared to the adventure-type overall story. The story has some dark moments, but is nicely balanced out by the occasional quip and humour. Still ongoing.

Death Becomes Me, Angels Among Us, V for Vengeance by J Rush

  • Recommended by frankystein123
  • Pairing: H. Dresden/Lash
  • Synopsis: Set after Changes and then continuing on to its own path, this three-part (loooong) story chronicles the blossoming relationship between Harry and Lash weighed against investigations against the Nickelheads, vampires, and more.
  • Comments: Very nicely done, a must read for anyone who feel miffed by the inadequate screen-time between the two in the books. Ranging from funny to angst, this small-novel touches a lot of bases and delivers in spades.
