Whay does this page have no examples? And does its name need to be changed?

Yes, I know that it says "No examples, please; Examples should go under Viral Marketing instead." That's something we inherited from TVTropes. I think putting one trope's examples on another trope's page is stupid.

Am I off-base here?

Not sure if I truly understand this Trope. Would it be like, say, having a poster on a wall in a Resident Evil game that was advertising Breath of Fire ? (Both are Capcom games).

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

No, this is kind of like setting up an Alternate Reality Game without, you know, the game part.

But I see you had the same response to the trope name that I did (see below).

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

NO, I don't think you're off-base. The article itself says not all in-universe marketing is viral marketing, so why should all examples go there?

The trope name might need massaging, while we're at it. When I saw "In-Universe Marketing", the first thing that came to my mind was stuff like when City of Heroes tried to sell in-universe billboard space for real-world advertising. This trope is more like an Alternate Reality Game (which is an example of this trope itself) -- maybe "Alternate Reality Marketing"?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Since two of the first three replies mention some confusion over the trope name, I've expanded the question. @ HeneryVII @ Looney Toons

"Alternate Reality Marketing" sounds good to me.

HeneryVII (talkcontribs)

So, like it would be the Ninja Turtles ordering from Dominos, except a video game rather than a cartoon?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

No, it's more like you or I finding an online menu from Café Boeuf in Lake Wobegon, because A Prairie Home Companion was doing some advertising.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

Don't really understand this one. Think I'll pass.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I've added a couple of sentences to the description - perhaps that might help clear up the confusion.

You do In-Universe Marketing, which is actually out-of-universe marketing - take something from in the universe and turn it into a Real Life thing. (If it's a physical thing, Defictionalization is required.)

EDIT: Oh, and the name "In-Universe Marketing" appears to have been created by TVTropes. I can't find any Real Life site that uses the term.

Agiletek (talkcontribs)

I barely understand this, and the examples that link to the page make more sense than the page itself.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Since so many people are having trouble with this trope, does it need a trip back to the Trope Workshop for a better description and some examples?

I didn't expect the problems here were this bad, but since they are, they should be fixed.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I think a rename and a clarification is all it really needs. And the recovery of any examples over on Viral Marketing that could reasonably be moved back.
