Hotel Transylvania is a 2012 animated children's monster comedy film by Sony Pictures Animation with Genndy Tartakovsky directing. It had the voice cast of Adam Sandler as Dracula, Selena Gomez as Mavis, Andy Samberg as Jonathan Loughran, Kevin James as Frankenstein's Monster, Steve Buscemi as Wayne the Wolf, CeeLo Green as Murray the Mummy, Fran Drescher as Eunice Frankenstein, Jon Lovitz as Quasimodo Wilson and Molly Shannon as Wanda the Wolf.

The titular "Hotel Transylvania" is the lifehood of Count Dracula, a luxurious resort that doubles as the place where monsters in general and his daughter Mavis in particular can stay safe from human persecution. Dracula is particularly repulsed by humans, as he holds them responsible for the death of his wife, Mavis' mother, and wants to keep the curious young woman away from them. But then a lost human, Jonathan "Johnny" Loughran, arrives to the hotel, just when Dracula is organizing a party to celebrate Mavis' 118th birthday. Chaos ensues as Dracula tries to get Johnny out of the hotel undiscovered by the other guests, a thing that becomes way more complicated when the young man and Mavis experience the "Zing", a form of Love At First Sight that is highly treasured in monster culture...

The film got mixed reviews but was a financial hit and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film. It gained three sequels from 2015 to 2021 with most of the cast returning (with Sandler and James leaving for the last one).

Tropes used in Hotel Transylvania (film) include:
  • Big Bad: Quasimodo Wilson.
  • Blatant Lies: Whenever the elderly gremlin woman eats something, she says "I didn't do that". She later admitted that she ate Johnny's scooter.
  • Brick Joke: Johnny wondered if he stuck his hands in Griffin's mouth to see if they can disappear. Griffin complained the same thing to Dracula.
  • Catch Phrase: "Holy rabies" by Mavis.
  • Dance Party Ending: The monsters sing and rap about the Zing.
  • Distant Prologue: The beginning shows Drac raising Mavis and setting up the hotel centuries ago.
  • Early Installment Weirdness: This is the only film of the four to not feature Dennis, Jonathan and Mavis' son. Also, Griffin's name isn't mentioned in this film unlike the sequels.
  • Fiery Redhead: While Griffin is invisible, he claimed he has red, curly hair.
  • Game Face: Drac has these whenever he gets protective of Mavis.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: Johnny says under Drac's bag "It's kind of funky to breathe under here". Some can mishear it as him saying "I can't fucking breathe under here".
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Dracula said it word for word since he made a fake village filled with zombies to protect Mavis from danger.
  • Interspecies Romance: Mavis and her human husband Johnny, Happily Married as of the most recent film.
  • Invisible Streaker: It's heavily implied that Griffin was naked the whole time. For instance, he was wearing a visible bathing suit and Wayne took it away from him. He later powdered his butt.
  • Jump Scare: Drac interrupts Mavis and Johnny's kiss with his vamp face roaring at them.
  • Love At First Sight: Mavis and Johnny zinged upon first sight, just like Drac and Martha.
  • Monster Mash: Has a lot of the traditional monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman.
  • Our Vampires Are Different:
    • Drac explained to Johnny that he drinks near blood or blood beaters rather than actual human blood.
    • Also, vampires are able to bear children much like humans can; in the second film, Mavis is pregnant with her son Dennis, who is born in a later scene.
  • Small Role, Big Impact:
    • While Quasimodo isn't that much of a problem, he helped tell the monsters that Johnny is actually a human, setting up the climax.
    • Winnie the Wolf was able to trace down the scent of Johnny's shirt, leading to Dracula finding him.
  • Take That: There was a not so subtle jab to the Twilight franchise where Johnny watches a Twilight film on the airplane.
  • Unusual Euphemism: "Holy rabies!"
  • Won't Work On Me: Drac's hypnosis didn't work on Johnny since Johnny was wearing contact lenses.
