Carrying this over from the Trope Workshop proposal talks - we need to sort these examples in a week. I have a copy saved in my personal rescue files, but I'd rather this not get deleted to begin with.

I think a good place to start is cutting The Tropes subsection - the description emphasizes that we shouldn't just list any old thing beginning with "the", and that subsection is practically an example of why.

Just as a note, the use of "The (Family Name)" as the title of that family's head is not a case of this trope. While you may refer to that individual as "the (Family Name)", you don't address him that way. "The Longbottom of Longbottom" is still "Mr. Longbottom" when you talk to him.

Also well done on the mass removal - could've been bolder and at least done the Tropes section myself, but I can't see anything you wiped as being removed by mistake. That just leaves roughly 16 examples in need of further context - think that's enough to justify removing the delete template once it's done?

I think it's justified now, honestly, as we've done sincere and significant work to improve the page and move it toward (re-)launch.

Agreed that there has been enough substantial work done here to save the trope candidate. Thank you, everyone.

(I am so tempted to play with the trope and change the final section header from "The Real Life" to "But it's only A Real Life"...<grin>)

Can this be applied to objects as well as people? If you all think so, I'll gladly edit the description accordingly to reflect some of the examples I wish to add.

If I'm not mistake we're already doing so... we've got "El Nino" and "The Bronx" in Real Life, after all.

And Ukraine was called "The Ukraine" by English-speakers for decades. So, why not?
