One Piece the Great Age of Piracy

The Great Age of Piracy is a One Piece Roleplay hosted on Naruto Forums. Version 1.0 was started June 2008 and lasted roughly 3 months. Despite being rather short lived, it was a huge success, and was immediately rebooted by version 2.0, which lasted a whopping 15 months and is by far the longest version so far. Version 3.0 lasted about 11 months, but began to fizzle out towards the end - and so the most recent version, The Great Age of Piracy 4.0 [dead link], was born!

Version 1.0 and 2.0 ran alongside the canonical One Piece universe, with the characters exploring the blues while the Straw Hats were in the Grand Line, and only moving into the Grand Line once the Straw Hats were sufficiently far away. Cannon characters were out of bounds, but RP characters frequently commented on the current goings-on of the manga.

3.0 was unique in that it broke fro the traditional formula, taking place 10 years after version 2.0, making many of the 2.0 main characters powerful forces such as Four Emperors or Seven Warlords of the Sea. The characters were still player controlled, but they were secondary characters, only used when the plot needed to be moved along, or people were feeling nostalgic.

4.0 shakes up the system again - while it is more of a reboot of 2.0, it removes the cannon characters from the universe. This allows the RPers to have pretty much free rein over the One Piece world without having to worry about sticking to canon.

Tropes in all Versions:

  • Action Girl: Pretty much any female pirate or marine in the game.
  • Author Existence Failure: This sadly happens a lot. When a player dissapers, usually all of his stories are put to a halt and his characters are sent to the game's graveyard, Davy Jones Locker.
  • Ass Pull: It's an RP based off a Shonen action series. These are bound to pop up every once and a while.
  • Bishonen: A few characters' appearances; has been commented on a few times for not being One Piece style, but since Luffy has a few Bishonen traits, most people are okay with it.
  • Color Coded for Your Convenience: Players are required to color code their character's speaking sentences to differentiate between each character's actions.
  • Continuity Reboot: Has went through three of them, each updating the system.
  • Depending on the Writer: Again, an RP. Different people portray characters differently.
  • Deus Ex Machina: Happens from time to time when a player needs it to get out of a tough situation that they written themselves into.
  • Expy: A few.
    • Ken Katayanagi and Kyle Katayanagi are expies of the... Katayanagi twins from Scott Pilgrim.
  • Flash Step: Shonen. What did you expect?
  • Grey and Gray Morality: Inevitable. Since both pirates and marines are main characters, we see both the best and worst of both worlds.
  • The Gunslinger: See above.
  • Idiot Hero: Too many to list individually. Fitting, considering what manga hero we're talking about here.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Which will occasionally lead to No Fourth Wall
  • Pirate Girl: Self explanatory.
  • Retcon: Considering it is a play-by-play post text RP it should be expected that some things have to be retconned. This includes series' canon and RP canon.
  • Red Baron: Like the actual One Piece universe, most pirates have a badass nickname. Moab 'Mad Bomber' Dembr, Rex 'Green Clock' Harshland, Kris 'The Renegade' Jensen, Tengu 'The Blind Demon' Midomaru, Sonozaki 'The Witch' Mion, Kaya 'Wings' Marion, Kent 'the Red', Elaine 'Princess Cassandra' Cruskent, Dante 'the Devil King' Masters, Jason 'The Inferno' Rock, Jason 'Black Coat' Alridge, and James 'The Red Monkey' Danziker.
    • The marines have Zane Garrick 'The Fist', Koya 'Prince' Sakamarti, Jinto 'the Snake'.
  • Shonen Upgrade
  • Story Arc: Like the One Piece manga/anime, arcs make up the entire RPGs. Arcs can be loosely connected and the captain of the crew usually posts the main enemies of the arc.
  • Super Strength: Considering this is a Shonen RP, it should be expected that many characters would possess this ability.

  • Lightning Bruiser: Kent is one of these, preferring to speed blitz his opponents (going straight through attacks if needed) and then pounding them.

Tropes for Version 3.0:

  • Badass Longcoat: Feroy Toglory wears one.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Rose's bubble Devil Fruit which she has used more then once to defeat a arc villain.
  • Jack of All Stats: Jax was this as one of the Phoenix Pirates.
  • Mad Bomber: Moab Dembr, whose pirate etiphet is actually the Mad Bomber! His Devil Fruit power allows him to transform any object into a bomb with a seven second time limit.


Tropes for Version 4.0:

  • Ancient Egypt: Atem's main theme.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Duke's devil fruit power, but it doesn't really grant the object's sentiency. He can just understand their souls and command them. Does this sound like anything to you?
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Ben [dead link] from the World Government Triumvirate (counts because of the background he comes from.)
  • Badass Longcoat: Duke wears one. Feroy also does too.
  • Badass Grandpa: This RPG's resident badass old men are Shinra Miyamoto, Barrt, Ben, the commander-in-chief Blake Godsend, Earth of the Makaousu, the current Fleet Admiral Archer Armstrong, Admiral Kurokarasu, freakin' ZEUS and POSEIDON. There's also Jax and Akuma Rodgers. Yeah, that's a lot of badass old men.
  • Break the Cutie: This happened to Kaya before the rp officially started. Which led to her status as a Broken Bird (perhaps literally, with the wings and all)
  • Complete Monster: Levy (a hammerhead fishman)... towards humans only, though. It can be said that he is softening up or becoming worse due to being in a human crew.
  • Combat Compliment: When Kent fights Rich, a disillusioned Marine who's been Reassigned to Antarctica, they start complimenting each other's abilities. Eventually they stop fighting and Kent convinces Rich to quit the marines.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Duke Kaiser wears one due to being scarred years ago by his old captain. He got him back by destroying his ship and crew, though.
  • Gravity Master: Alexis's devil fruit, the Gravity Gravity fruit, essentially turns her into this.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Kent again. Garrick also qualifies.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Ken Katayanagi's devil fruit, the Thud Thud fruit, allows him to pull this trope.
  • Musical Assassin: Ken Katayanagi again. His Devil Fruit turns his body into a human beatbox.
  • Naive Newcomer: Anya is essentially this with shades of the Rookie Red Ranger playing into things.
  • Knight Templar: Ben again, he believes in upholding the rules of the world, and will not hesitate to come after you if you don't stick to them.
  • Playing with Fire: Tiger D. Ral's devil fruit power. Essentially a Paramecia counterpart to the canon Mera Mera Fruit which is not accesible for use. The mechanics behind it are rather complicated, though.
  • Power Tattoo: Kris Jensen's devil fruit power allows him to bring his tattoos to life, giving him various powers to use in battle.
  • Rape as Drama: Played with. It is left open to whether Anya was actually raped or nearly raped. She quickly got revenge on her attempted rapist, though. The reprecussions have yet to be felt because it happened in a recent arc.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Duke, Serena, and Garrick seem to believe this.
  • Take Over the World: Duke's ultimate goal. He desires to create a utopia where he rules and the weak are protected. He does so by gaining the trust of important islands and setting them up as territories.
    • And now Kent wants to do it too, but he's a bit less altruistic about it.
  • Warrior Poet: Verse, who can also manipulate reality with his words.
