Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Tomboy Futaba Yoshinaga and her somewhat effeminate older brother find themselves in for a surprise when Futaba wins a prize in her local lottery - a stone gargoyle. Even more surprising, the Gargoyle can talk and declares itself the gatekeeper of the house and soon enough, the city in general. So begins the story of Gargoyle (nickname Gar-kun) and the city's ins, outs and magical happenings.

Based on a series of Light Novels, starring Norio Wakamoto as Gar-kun.

Tropes used in Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas include:
  • Cute Mute - Mrs. Yoshinaga doesn't say an audible word throughout the entire series, except in the last episode.
  • Dancing Theme - The ending sequence has Futaba, Mimori and Lili dancing in white suits and top hats - simple, but cute.
  • Disproportionate Retribution - Gargoyle is often subject to this from the women of the Yoshinaga family.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady - Kazumi's feminine traits are a constant subject of derision, though he does have a girl who has a crush on him.
  • Dynamic Entry - Futaba to Gargoyle, all the time.
  • Elemental Powers - Gargoyle has fire, electricity and Frickin' Laser Beams. With his job as Gatekeeper, he uses them for defense and occasionally frying the paperboy.
  • Fan Girl - Mrs. Yoshinaga is Hyakushiki's biggest fan, recording him any time he comes onto TV. Needless to say, she's elated when he actually comes to their house.
  • Fetish Fuel - Osiris is a humanoid plant in the shape of a woman... who has tentacles for her lower half. Possibly runs right into Power Perversion Potential.
  • Funny Foreigner - Hisham, creator of Osiris, hails from Egypt, is outlandish and silly, and has a peculiar way of speaking.
  • Gadgeteer Genius - Iyo Takahara, creator of Gargoyle, is an alchemist version of this. Likewise, Hamilton is the alchemist version of a Mad Scientist.
  • Gender Flip - Heika and Kayano, a brother-sister pair who are almost exactly like Futaba and Kazumi save for gender, making them more normal than their counterparts.
  • Gentleman Thief - Hyakushiki, who later gets a Promotion to Parent when he adopts Lili. Also a sometimes Panty Thief, mostly for laughs. Lili later tries to take up the trade.
  • Hot Shounen Mom - Mrs Yoshinaga, who is so cute she looks younger than her 17 year old son.
  • Mama Bear - Mrs. Yoshinaga is brutal when angered - she knows wrestling moves and isn't afraid to use them.
  • Meaningful Name - Each of the other sentient alchemist creations that appear in the series possess one. Cherub is a winged golden statue meant to serve as a Foil to Gargoyle, Osiris is named after an Egyptian god, and Dullahan is derived from Irish folklore, believed to be based off a god who demanded human sacrifices.
  • Mundane Fantastic - Even with the presence of alchemy, psychics, robots, and other oddities, the lives of the people of Goshiki are what's most important.
  • Offscreen Teleportation - While we never see Gargoyle actually move anywhere, he gets around quickly.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You - Amane Higashimiya is a wealthy alchemist who believes Iyo Takahara shamed her late father, and seeks to avenge him through the defeat of Gargoyle with his own creation, Cherub. Naturally, Cherub exhibits this trope toward Gargoyle himself.
  • Phenotype Stereotype - Lili and her father.
  • Psychic Powers - Lili, thanks to some experiments her father performed on her. Mind Control Eyes were present, but Iyo managed to heal her of this.
  • Robot Buddy - Dullahan, who eventually becomes part of Lili's family.
  • Slice of Life
  • Speaks Fluent Animal - Gargoyle has the ability to speak to animals, other statues and humans, serving as a translator between them. A cousin to the trope shows up when Futaba gains the ability to talk to plants by Applied Phlebotinum.
  • Strong Family Resemblance - Kazumi takes a lot after his mom.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl - Futaba and Mimori.
  • Unnamed Parent - Mr. and Mrs. Yoshinaga.
  • Wrestler in All of Us - The women of the Yoshinaga family do German Suplexes quiet often.
