These are recommendations made by Tropers for Warhammer 40000 fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Authors and Websites

Incunabulum

• A website created by a author who went on to become a Ascended Fan, rarely updated these days but the stories are well worth reading. I particularly recommend The Killing and Please don't feed the Warboss.

The Librarium

• The largest collection of Warhammer fanfiction in the net, some of which is rather good. I recommend the works of Chun, Conquering Light, Feil, Firefox, Launcifer, Nextdoor_Warlord and Squiggle.
  • With the forums gone as of the latest version of the Black Library site, most of the stories and writers appear to have moved to the Black Library Bolthole

The Conclave

• A set of forums dedicated to the spinoff of Warhammer 40K, Inquisitor. Has a large role-playing section, where posters detail the efforts of the Emperor's Holy Inquisition, their antagonists, or sometimes just more "normal" people in the Grim Dark Millenium. Particularly worthy of note is the work Aurea Mediocritas

The Dornian Heresy

• Recommended by Skritz
• Synopsis A Mirror Universe version of the Horus Heresy, with Rogal Dorn as the Big Bad (instead of Horus). Composed of multiple articles, and updated from time to time. Well written and worth reading.
• Comments: Nurgle-dedicated Blood Angels (diseased and very vampire-ish), Khornate Space Wolves and World Eaters who got over their anger issues!
  • As different as it is, some things just do not change in this version of the Heresy. Despite being on the side of the angels relatively speaking, Abbadon still hates Horus, Ahriman still is trying to find his way to the Black Library, and so on. Unlike the original Heresy, the Imperium now has completely different flavors of traitor legions to deal with (the Tzeentchian Raven Guard are quite different than the original Thousand Sons, for example).

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Shape of the Nightmare to Come by LordLucan

• Synopsis: What's worse than Warhammer 40k? Warhammer 50k. The God Emperor has perished, the Imperium is shattered, the Necrons reawaken, Chaos reigns supreme, and that's just the beginning.
• Comments: Posted on a forum thread, so there is discussion between posts, but definitely worth a read. There aren't tremendous amounts of actual 'stories', but there is loads of detailed background fluff, which can make for hours of reading. The sheer amount of despair and horror can be unnerving at times, and the often Lovecraftian style of writing amplifies these elements. Basically this is to 40k as 40k is to Star Wars or Star Trek. Now has its own trope page.

ToyHammer by RougePsyker.

• Synopsis: Michael, a guy who plays 40k but is not a hardcore fan, suddenly finds a bunch of miniatures battling each other (they don't seem to be specifically his miniatures), and Hilarity Ensues.
• Comments: This is a really interesting read. It starts out a little disjointed, but the writer quickly warms up, grows his beard and it evolves from a rather disjointed gag series into a really good read by chapter 8 or so. I'd recommend a rewrite for the first few chapters (which are funny, but a little off) but from then on it gets into something awesome. Also, from what I've seen in the reviews, a lot of people like this one. The Omake Collections are related and are as awesome as oneshots go.

The Misfits by davidnm2007

• Synopsis: (Taken from the Pit) Alastar, Nasty and Patreus are training to be Space Marines - or trying to, anyway. Ever get bored of Chapter-zombie, personality-free, lemming-like marines? This is my attempt to avoid those tedious stereotypes.
• Comments: A fun read, in-character, and with great characters. That, and it isn't a Deadfic. One troper found the writer's take on the Ultramarines problematic, but it's a good read regardless of your feelings on that chapter.
  • Crull: While technically written well, the author's problems with the Ultramarine's characterization detract from the whole fic for me.
  • Cosmic-Behemoth: Just bloody cool in my opinion, all three of the title characters are fleshed out, interesting characters, Kodos is a gas to listen to; and I dare say there isn't so much as a whiff of chapter zombies, cardboard characters, or a Mary Sue in the least. Just a couple of Deus Ex Machinas, but the badassery surrounding them pretty well overshadows it.
  • USA Bobcat: Have followed this since infancy, and it has never stopped delighting me. The fact that the protagonist trio are so different is very intriguing, and even lampshaded in the story. Each of them bring a different POV to the tale, and character development is actually present. As well, the presence of a well-done Chaos Marine antagonist is also a boon, and the author makes it hard not to root for Chaos, perhaps a tad too much. The Space Wolves are amazing and hilarious, every appearance of theirs making you want to read more. The Ultramarines are portrayed a little dickishly, but to be fair, they demanded and received their own pocket kingdom. That's bound to have affected their judgement more than a little, and there are signs that even the Ultramarine jerks are good guys being manipulated, whenever they interact with the Storm Ravens. All in all, a wonderful story, I cannot recommend a better one.

Vultures of the Imperium by Pixo

• Synopsis: The Vultures of the 99th Belagroso Aviation Regiment in action.
• Comments: Extremely strong writing with good characterization and good storytelling, and the author has put serious thought into the operation of a Vulture gunship group. While the Gaunt's Ghosts series is famous for giving the Guard the appearance of a serious and competent military organization, this story leaves Abnett for dead; they don't look competent, they are competent.

Time of Ending: The 40k Finale by Nicholasakira

• Recommended by Augustine
• Synopsis: This story is what happens when you skip ahead 3,000 years from the current time. The author's description says it best "13000 years after Horus, the Imperium is at its breaking point. The Space Marines are dying off and Chaos is ready to claim the galaxy. This is the story of the epic conclusion of the Imperium's wars for survival." Every single race is accounted for and the author switches between them throughout the story.
• Comments: This story has not gotten the respect I feel that it deserves. The author mainly works with OCs due to the time period being changed. But the majority of the characters we know and love will make an appearance one way or another. However, there are some plot points that you may not be comfortable with, such as the Tyranids being the remainder of the Enslavers given physical form and the fate of the Unknown Primarchs. They did not bother me but Your Mileage May Vary. Overall, the author gives a well done conclusion to the entire series, giving a definite ending to every race involved.
  • It was also once illegally published on Amazon.com because some bastard stole it. It's gone now.

Big Sister by Academia Nut

• Synopsis: On the planet Nocturne, The Blacksmith N'bel is greeted by the child who will one day become the Primarch of the Salamanders, but he doesn't arrive alone. A girl, weak in body but strong in spirit, carried Vulkan through the wastes, and grows up alongside him as his sister. The locals gave the the name Ga'ri, and she's going to have a profound effect on the Salamanders. How has it's own page.

Sons of the Fire by Colonel Mustard and Gaius Marius

• Synopsis: On the Eastern fringe, a planetary governor is about to commit a great heresy; leading his planet into the alien embrace of the hated empire of the Tau. The Imperium cannot allow this to happen and send in two companies of Astartes to enact a great cull. One is from the unchallengable tank masters of the Sons of Thunder, the other from the brutal Salamander descendents called the Fire Beasts. All of them are Sons of Vulkan but by the time this war is over, they will be at each other's throats.

Return of the Lost Primarch by drakensis

• Synopsis: What if the swarming Tyranid invasions were nothing but rag tag fleets? What if someone was chasing them?
• Comments: A darkly humorous short one-shot told from the perspective of one of the two Unknown Primarchs.

Unusual Alliances by steinerdavion2183

• Synopsis: By choosing to save an Eldar Crop-production world (proper term?) from the Eldar's Dark Kin, an Ultramarine Captain sets of a domino effect within the entirety of the 40K universe.
• Comments: Raw writing is competent, and raw plotting is too. The author rejects the canonical universe in his second chapters' reply to reviews, though, perhaps to attempt to cover up for his Theme Park Version of 40k, and the story never quite recovers from this as a work of 40k fiction though it's certainly a decent story for...something else?

Chronicles of the Burger Marines by purplefishman

• Synopsis: The Burger Marines... One of the strangest chapters of the Imperium... Dedicated to feed all the actors of the WH40K universe... There are thousands of strange stories that take place in their restaurants. Here are some of them.
• Comments: A funny fic that focuses on the Burger Marines, a chapter dedicated to conquering their allies and enemies appetite by serving them the best fast food in the galaxy. Very hilarious on how the Burger Marines handle various customers who come to their restaurant and the customers themselves over food.

Crossover Fics

Stories which crossover with other characters or works.

Hammerhand by Colonel Mustard

• Synopsis: A cross over with Mass Effect 2: While on their way to battle the Greenskins, Captain Malleus of the Sons of Thunder and his command squad are hit by a shock attack gun and blasted all the way back to the early 3rd millenium. Shepard is dead, human colonies are disapearing and its time for the Astartes to do what the Astartes were made to do. Long, well written and complete with a sequel already started.

Shinji and Warhammer 40 K by Bluepencil

• Synopsis: Shinji, while still a small child, finds someone's Warhammer 40000 collection in a heavy black case, and the changes an introduction to that universe make in both his personality and actions result in a radically different course of events. Too bad it's so far unfinished.
• Comments:
  • Tacitus: I could throw around words like Crazy Awesome or Crack Fic, but that wouldn't tell the whole story. It's a patently ridiculous premise that nevertheless works marvelously, with the comedic and humanizing moments of Eva blunting the edge of 40ks grimdark, while 40ks theme of courage in the face of inhuman horror lets the Eva cast endure its ordained trials. It has acts of badassitude to make Kamina weep with pride, unexpected hilarity that may eject you from your chair, times of horror when you realize the Eva verse is getting worse, and even some unexpectedly touching moments. Through it all the author displays an impressive understanding of and affection for the canon and themes of both 'verses, but without taking either too seriously. Caveats would be that the increasing amount of trope references and gratuitous shot-outs may be too distracting for some readers' tastes, and of course that the 'fic isn't finished yet.

Thousand Shinji by Academia Nut

• Synopsis: A crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion, different from Shinji and Warhammer 40 K because it's an actual universe crossover rather than the boardgame making an appearance.
• Comments: Where there's smoke Shinji and Warhammer 40 K, they pitch back Thousand Shinji. I'll second Thousand Shinji, if only because of the final passage, which is an absolutely hilarious riffing of the "summary" that prefaces the Warhammer 40000 books. Though it of course has more merits than just that.

The Circle Must Be Broken by Todeswind

• Synopsis: Inquisitor Daul is hunting down the dangerous heretic Soren Faust on the planet of Belzafest. Faust, the supposedly long dead traitor Inquisitor Lord, infamous for close to a century for his wild genetic experiments and insane philosophies, has taken world hostage and is planning something insidious. Aided by the former Skitarii Cairn Thross, the Magos Kerrigan, the elite soldiers known as the Lionhearts and reluctantly aided by the Rogue Trader Nathaniel Emanuelle Sáclair, Daul is about to discover secrets far beyond the scope of what he was prepared to manage and is going to have to find his place in a wider world than he had ever believed existed in a war for the fate of humanity long before even the Dark Age of technology. Babylon five is a haven for warriors, idealists, dreamers, and wanderers. How much damage can one more ship of fanatics do in the long run?
• Comments: First five chapters focus on the Warhammer 40k aspect with only hints at Babylon 5, however the later chapters are more obvious crossovers.

Elsewhen, and Elsewhere

• Synopsis: Epic crossover between Warhammer 40,000 and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Alternates between a single Space Marine battlebarge lost in the Star Trek galaxy and the battle between Imperium forces and the Tyranids at Istvaan.
• Comments: Does a brilliant job showing the vast, vast technogical disparity between the two universes, as well as the clashing mindsets of the idealistic Federation and the much grimmer Space Marines. Also captures the essence of the Space Marines quite beautifully. Also, the chapter where the Space Marines take on the Jem'Hadar and thoroughly curbstomp them is a thing of absolute beauty. Note: Not updated since '07.

Chains Of The Kindred

• Synopsis: Halo + Warhammer 40,000. Packed full of Ultimate Showdowns, such as Titan vs Scarabs, Space Marines vs Covenant, and, of course, Tyranids vs Flood. Running through the whole thing is a massive Chaos corruption, and The Reveal of The Emperor himself. Unfinished as yet.
  • • There are a few problems to be found though, such as the comparison between Kasrkins and Helljumpers that would make any proper Cadian player just bang his head against a wall, but other than that, it is a good read.

Who the Hell do You Think we Are?

• Synopsis: The Dai-Gurren gang perhaps should have taken a closer look around their galaxy, because their world has found it's way into the Eye of Terror. But it's okay, since Kamina and Lordgenome have a plan.
• Comments: ...what needs to be said? ITS THE ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN HOT BLOODED DETERMINATORS AGAINST THE DARKGRIMNESS OF THE GRIMDARK. READ IT! Also, Rossiu. Pilots. Lazengann.
  • Your Mileage May Vary quite a bit. Proofreading doesn't seem to be a thing the author has heard of. Sure, kick reason to the curb. But be warned that spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure/pacing have also been give the boot, and that might get in the way of enjoying the story.

Jar Jar and Warhammer, 40,000

• Synopsis: What follows next has been drawn from transcripts and reports from the sides fighting on that world, although naturally it must be taken into account the mental affects this untold abomination had on those interviewed. I truly pray to the God Emperor in his eternal wisdom that such an event never repeat itself.
• Comments: I never thought I'd root for Jar Jar over anything. Just read it yourselves.

The God of Death By Tyrant of the East.

• Synopsis A Space Marine from the Death Spectres Chapter is caught in the warp and is transported to the planet of Azeroth, (a.k.a. Warcraft's setting) and is caught up in a whirlwind of Chaos infestation, Scourge, and wholly unwanted Xenos infatuation. The blood flies and the bodies hit the floor. In the works, very long, and has at least two sequels already planned. Now has its own page.

A Problem For Tomorrow by Karazor

Code Geass 50K: Lelouch of the Imperium by Soraga

• Synopsis: In the fifty-first millenium,the Imperium of Man is in the final stages of collapse. As the forces of Abaddon the Despoiler close in on Terra, humanity's final stronghold, their only hope is the Emperor's forgotten solders: the Black Knights.
• Comments: I would like to recommend this fic to fans of Shinji And Warhammer 40K. I mean, let's face it, if Warhammer 40K can make somebody like Shinji into one hell of a leader, can you imagine Lelouch in his place?

4chan

/tg/ has produced a lot of 40k-related fiction over the years. Your Mileage May Vary on its quality, but it tends to be good, if only because of the humour pieces.

Feral World Religon

• Recommended by USA Bobcat
• Synopsis: Two Sisters are stuck on a Feral World, and learn of their interesting spin on the history of the Imperium, specifically, the Horus Heresy.
• Comments: Short, but funny, the punchline is that one (and only one) of the Primarchs is portrayed as he really is. Have fun trying to guess which it is! This piece is well worth the quick five minutes you will spend reading it, and is a true example of how good /tg/ can be at times.

BrightHammer 40k

• Recommended by Whakamol, Icarael
• Synopsis: Does regular Warhammer and its incessant Grimdark have you down? Then try out the Noble Brightness of Brighthammer, where the future holds only High Adventure!
• Comments: A mirror setting of regular Warhammer 40k, with a goateed Emperor and Fum'aan Shu'u, the rogue Tau mad scientist. There are actually two versions of Brighthammer; the one linked above, which is more satire, and BrightHammer 2.0, which is more serious and discussed here.

Kharn

• Synopsis: Kharn the Betrayer is a famous Chaos Space Marine who revels in bloodshed. All bloodshed. Exactly who is doing the shedding, he doesn't care so much, and thusly has a wholly deserved reputation as a teamkilling f*cktard. Despite this, he's actually a pretty fun guy.
• Comments: Yeah, Kharn is made of win and good.

• Synopsis: K59 is an otherwise unnamed Commissar imprisoned by the Inquisition for executing too many of his own men, the story relating the events that led up to K59's imprisonment by an Inquisitor.
• Comments: An unconscionable monster by our standards, but in a world of grimdark he is a surprising beacon of purity and determination against the horrors of the universe. It's short, so decide for yourselves.

Inquisitor Malius

• Synopsis: Macha is captured by the Imperium, and promptly attempts to seduce a Commissar.

Warhammer 40k Group

• Synopsis: The entire 40k universe is actually nothing more then a long running tabletop game and all the gods are the players of their respective races/armies. Anything, and I mean anything, about the Emperor invokes MANLY TEARS.

Guardsman Eli

• Comments: Began as a post wondering why people still think of the Guardsmen as protagonists, question is answered by Gemini starting at 5593915. Link is from sup/tg/ and hence NSFW. Mildly touching.

Gav and Bob

• Synopsis: Gav is an Ogryn. Bob is also an Ogryn. Gav like Bob. Bob is Gav's best friend. Gav and Bob fight enemies of the Emperah, like greenskins and bugs and the bad men that stopped loving the Emperah. Gav hates them the most.
• Comments: Crying because of an Ogryn is hardly dignified, but in this story it is inevitable. Gav is an Iron Woobie of the most spectacular sort.

Orkhammer

• Synopsis: Orks decide to join some of the other factions. What?
• Comments: Orks. Ergo, win.

Friends

• Synopsis: Slaanesh, even after 10,000 years, is still an outsider when dealing with the other Chaos Gods. In an attempt to get closer to them, she asks about the person she has heard them mention occasionally, and is told a story about their old friend.
• Comments: Holy crap. I don't even know where to begin with this one. It is based on no official material whatsoever, but is so damn plausible and adds an extra layer to the grimdark of the galaxy that I never even imagined. It's rather short, so read and decide for yourselves.

The Guy Who Cried Grendel

• Recommended by J Bridge, Medinoc
• Synopsis: A recounting of a Dark Heresy campaign, and the luckiest bastard to ever roll a die.
• Commnets: Tabletop RPGs are ripe for awesome and unlikely stories, and this is one of the best I've seen. Grendel is a fat librarian with no skills whatsoever, but somehow manages to do things not even Space Marines are capable of.

Daria 40k: Is It The Grim Darkness Of The Far Future, Yet? by RX-87 (crossover with Daria, natch).

• Recommended by fhtagn.
• Synopsis: The cast of Daria (and some old friends from Our Heroine's past) take on the roles of Imperial and Chaos forces as the battle for the fate of Planet Lawndale rages and Hilarity Ensues.
• Comments: Utterly hilarious, though it does require a working knowledge of both the 40k and MTV Animation-verses to really appreciate. The characterizations are spot-on almost to a fault (Jane's libido does veer uncomfortably close to OOC (and Fluff-inaccuracy) once or twice, but it does get an amusing justification towards the end).

Abaddon Quest

• Recommended by Crazy Jabberwock, Mad Cormorant
• Description: A still in progress quest that has lead to Abaddon going from (Failbaddon) to (Abaddass). Includes Abaddon getting mechanical arms (one with a bound daemon traped inside), Punching warp anamolies and being as depraved as possible along the way. Not for the light of heart, but both Awesome and Hilarious.
  • Absolutely seconded. Not for the easily offended, as it crosses the line so many times that it's starting to look doubtful whether the line existed at all. Abaddon and co. have no concept of what a Moral Event Horizon even is, but then again, they're Chaos marines. • Description: As the Imperium is falling apart at the seems, the Emprah tries a desperate maneuver and comes back possessing the body of a Tarrasque. Awesome (and some stern talking-to) ensues. The fic incorporates a bunch of other /tg/ Fanon, such as LIIVI or the Blood Ravens' kleptomania.
• Comments: One of those stories that works best when you don't take it all that seriously, but the occasions when it does get into genuine character bits, it handles them surprisingly well. Lots of Alternate Character Interpretation going on, but it all just contributes to make the story better, so one can hardly complain too much.

• Synopsis: A short vignette about Ork Warboss Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka and the banner waver he once had by his side.
• Comments: Although short, this fiction shows that the Orks, like any other race, are capable of feeling loss. Manly Tears are perfectly excusable when reading this.

• Comments: Fucking hilarious. Think High School Musical, if the cast were composed of Necrons, Space Marines and Chaos Cultists. In other words, nothing like High School Musical.

Love Can Bloom, Imber, Core of Brutality, Meet the Ulthran, Full Melta Panic! and Lofn by 4chan

• Synopsis: Love Can Bloom is the title of one of the most well-loved pieces of writefaggotry ever to grace /tg/. Once upon a time, there was a drawfag named Miko. She made a comic about a Vindicare assassin falling in love with Taldeer from Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Dawn of War: Winter Assault. There was much nerd rage. Then, somebody started writing a fanfic for this fan picture. There was a mixture of nerd rage and delight. Also of note are the MANY offshoots that Love Can Bloom has spawned. Ranging from Core of Brutality, a story about the Eversor hunting the duo, to the continuation in Imber, to Lofn who is just d'aww.
• Comments: Really, really good. Note that many of the pictures at the bottom of the pages are NSFW, like so many things on 1d4chan. Also, unfinished.

Love and Krieg by 4chan's /tg/

• Synopsis: Love and Krieg is a collection of short vignettes born from the crazy minds and sappy hearts of a bunch of /tg/ anons tickled by the idea of a Krieger girlfriend. The stories detail the sometimes humorous, often heartwarming events in the relationship between an unnamed, well-meaning Imperial civilian and Krieger Female Model 68b #6345. Each story loosely constituted a date or some outing, most of them tying together without any strict sense of chronology. The end result was something magical, evoking a sense of idyllic innocence rarely found in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.
• Comments: A Crowning Moment of Heartwarming for the Warhammer 40,000 setting, which can always use a few more of those. Not sure what else there is to comment on, the stories speak for themselves.
