Avengers: Age of Ultron is the 2015 sequel to The Avengers. In it, the Avengers must work together to defeat Ultron, a mechanical artificial intelligence bent on human extinction.

After raiding a Hydra base in search of Loki's scepter, taken by Hydra after the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier, the Avengers are attacked by two enhanced humans empowered by said scepter under the orders of Baron Von Strucker, one of the leaders of Hydra: Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, a speedster, and Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch. Wanda attacks Tony Stark and Steve Rogers' minds without them realizing it, and allows the Avengers to leave with the scepter.

Once he has the object in his possession, Tony sees an opportunity to enhance his and doctor Bruce Banner's defense project known as Ultron, an artificial intelligence who could remotely control his suits of armor to protect the Earth from alien threats.

Sadly for Tony, as he gains awareness thanks to the use of the scepter, Ultron goes psychotic almost from the get-go, attacks and "kills" J.A.R.V.I.S., an fellow artificial intelligence watching over him that was going to warn Stark of Ultron's awakening, and uses the element of surprise to attack the Avengers while getting away with the scepter, fully intent on terminating a good portion of mankind in order to ensure, as Tony wanted, "peace in our time".

Tropes used in Avengers: Age of Ultron include:

• Aborted Arc:
  • Thor doing an Achilles in His Tent gets a resolution when he returns to the Avengers claiming to have "a vision". But what's meant to be a longer storyline became a Missing Trailer Scene.
  • Both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver seeking revenge on Tony Stark subplot, since he killed their parents. There's no real resolution, as they sided with the Avengers when the twins realized that Ultron is a greater evil, not out of any epiphany about Tony not being a bad guy.
• Achilles in His Tent: Two mainly. After when Scarlet Witch shows them a vision, of Asgardians burning in Nordic Hel and the Infinity Gems, Thor goes to the University where Erik Selvig teaches at just to find answers. After doing that, he comes back with a vengeance. At the film's end, Bruce goes on a self-imposed exile, since he's disturbed of what he has become as the Hulk, also showing that his Achilles in His Ten will be long.
• Action Dad: Clint Barton is Happily Married with two kids and is expecting a third child.
• Action Film Quiet Drama Scene: The farmhouse scenes. Each of the characters has to consider whether they worthy to be an Avenger.
• Action Prologue: The opening has the team battling HYDRA and Baron von Strucker, just before moving to the opening credits and the main plot.
• Adam Westing: This time Stan Lee cameos as Stan Lee, a WW2 veteran who tried Asgardian liquor - Which is "Not meant for mortal men." - And is carried out of the party muttering "Excelsior!!"
• Adaptational Badass: Vision, unlike his comic book counterpart, is more powerful and important. In the comics, his powers are just standard - flight, higher than average toughness, strength, density manipulation powers, and a beam weapon, that's powered by his solar-powered gem. The comic book version of Vision is just an android that was given life by copying another existing superhero's brain. But he's the Avenger that gets the Worf Effect treatment, since he's easy to rebuild, and was left behind in Avenger's warehouse for years and wasn't in many story arcs, like "The House of M", and he came back in the comics circa 2012. In the film, Vision was made through a combo of artificial cells and J.A.R.V.I.S's mind, and animated by Thor's lightning. His strength and toughness rivals Thor, mainly of the Vibranium that's incorporated into his cells, his solar gem is replaced with an Infinity Stone, and he holds the rare few in the universe of being able to lift Mjölnir.
• Adaptational Nationality: Unlike in the comics, Ulysses Klaue ain't Dutch, instead he came from South Africa (Presumably of Boer descent).
  • The Maximoff twins hail from Wundagore Mountain, Transia. In the film, they're from Sokovia, an Eastern European country.
  • Hank Pym never made an appearance in the MCU, until Ant-Man
• Adaptational Wimp: Baron Von Strucker, he's a huge villain and a serious threat in the comics. Though in the film, he was a Smug Snake who was also cowardly and makes a brief appearance. But was killed by Ultron off-screen.
• Adaptation Distillation Actually has nothing to do with the recent Crisis Crossover and was instead based on based on the introduction of Ultron and Vision combined with the Ultron Unlimited.
• Adaptation Name Change:
  • The Hulkbuster suit was never called that; instead it's called "Veronica."
• Adapted Out: Instead of Hank Pym, it was Tony Stark who made Ultron.
• Advertised Extra: Both Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch appeared in the trailers and promotional material for Avengers 2.
• Age of Titles: AGE of Ultron.
• Aggressive Negotiations:
• A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Ultron is this. While Jarvis is inverted this trope altogether.
• All of Them:
• All There in the Manual: The comic book tie-ins explains what happened with some of the Avengers and the events all leading up to Avengers 2.
• Alternative Foreign Theme Song: In Japan, WRETHOV's "In Memories" was used.
• Antagonistic Offspring: Ultron towards the Avengers, mainly Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
• Antagonist Title: Age of Ultron, because Ultron the villain in this movie.
• Anti-Villain: Ultron is a product of flawed software design and untimely wants the best for mankind. Sadly it doesn't mean all of them will make it.

• Back from the Dead: Vision is this to J.A.R.V.I.S. to a point, being initially destroyed by Ultron but then resurrected by Stark, Banner and Thor on a body Ultron intended for himself but that was taken from him and uploaded with J.A.R.V.I.S' remains. He however declares he is not him.
• The Cameo: Stan Lee shows up at Tony Stark's party as one a war vet, telling his war stories.
  • Tells Thor to stop scaring them about how potent the Asgardian drink and has to be escorted out later after drinking some of it.

• Coming of Age Story: Scarlet Witch's subplot, helped along by Hawkeye.
• Gone Horribly Right: Wanda used her powers on Tony expressly to ruin him. The ending result is Ultron, someone who definitely wants Stark dead and to tarnish his legacy, but his objectives involves mass killing.
• Ironic Nursery Tune: The trailer's creepy version of "I've Got No Strings". Way to make use of that Disney ownership Marvel.
• My God, What Have I Done?: Scarlet Witch after she realised how she'd been manipulated by a killer robot in possibly killing millions.
• Never Trust a Trailer Some scenes from the trailers and previews were changed in the theater cut of the film.
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ultron was Tony Stark's invention, so most of the ensuing chaos and destruction was pretty much his fault.
• No Communities Were Harmed: Sokovia, a country who is "nowhere special, but is on the way of everywhere special", and is eastern European, it's clearly a stand-in for Bosnia, an eastern European country that was the victim of several wars between European powers thanks to its unfortunate geographic placement between them.
• Sequel Episode: To The Avengers, Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier
• Recut: Available in the Blu-Ray.
• The Stinger: Thanos gets his Infinity Gauntlet now that Loki and Ronan failed him to collect the Infinity Stones.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Though she certainly wished ill will towards Stark, Wanda had no idea her spell would lead him to create an android that is not only hostile to his creators but towards all mankind.
• Villains Act, Heroes React: The film explored what happens when the heroes attempted to break the status quo by taking preventative measures against human suffering and loss of life. In a nutshell: it just causes more human suffering and loss of life.
• Well-Intentioned Extremist: Ultron was tasked with managing world peace. Sadly, it took the message to its extremes and decided to wipe out almost all humans, since humans cause war.
