My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic/Recap/S1/E06 Boast Busters/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Accidental Aesop: Though the official moral is that it isn't arrogant to use your talent when you need to, another lesson might be "Those who boast will eventually be called on it."
  • Non Sequitur Scene: For some strange reason, Twilight causes a door to appear IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIBRARY to shut out Spike when he's telling her to show up Trixie. There is no comment made on the strangeness of this.
    • He was being annoying and she likely learned the spell just to say she had. Why is this strange? It's not the weirdest thing that's happened on this show.
  • Designated Villain: Trixie is considered a villain for boasting about how great she is and how amazing her tricks are...which is pretty much part of a magician's whole act and job description.
  • Trixie In A Leather Saddle: Trixie is probably the biggest Draco in Ponyfandom, easily edging out Gilda and Discord. Probably attributable to the fact that unlike Gilda, she didn't do anything to Fluttershy, and the fact that she's rather more adorable physically and with her mannerisms than either of them (despite being at least as big a jerk).
  • Genius Bonus: What's the first hint that Trixie is a humbug? She's the Great and Powerful.
    • Also, astronomy buffs might notice that the Ursa has a certain constellation on its flank...
      • Also, the Ursa Minor has a long tail, just like in the myth of the constellation.
      • It also takes a rudimentary knowledge of Latin to know that 'ursa' means 'bear,' and that Ursa Major and Ursa Minor are the official names of the 'Big Dipper' and 'Little Dipper,' respectively.
  • Most Annoying Sound: Snips and Snails' voices can get pretty grating after a while.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: While Trixie's prank magic tricks were certainly humiliating, it doesn't change the fact Applejack, Rarity and Rainbow Dash were acting as hecklers for absolutely no reason (and appeared to be the only ponies in the crowd to be dissatisfied). It's especially jarring seeing as those three are not above boasting about their apples, boutique and flying skills respectively.
