The Suite Life of Zack and Cody/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

  • Acceptable Targets: Paris Hilton, as a means to brutally subvert No Celebrities Were Harmed. They even mention Paris Hilton by name in several episodes. In an alternate universe she's president of the United States.
  • Fanon: Max's name is short for Maxine. This is never discussed in canon but accepted in fanfiction. Her last name is never agreed on though.
  • Flanderization:
    • London's stupidity ("Walk, chew, walk, chew...breathe!").
    • Zack has also went from being Book Dumb to borderline Too Dumb to Live.
    • Cody's dorkiness (All of a sudden he went from a poorly dressed smart kid to a complete Hollywood Nerd with a talent for cooking.)
      • More than that. They turned him from a dorky kid who attended math camp, took notes on virtually everything the teacher said, and apparently took a full Advanced Placement load in high school, into an impossible genius: Various On Deck episodes reveal that he has written three cookbooks, a novel and an opera, that he has a patent, that he spent years translating ancient hieroglyphs as a personal side project, was building model molecules out of juice boxes in nursery school, and, if I remember correctly, cut his own umbilical cord.
    • Maddie's rudeness to London (Perhaps the Sharpay sunk in?)
    • Arwin's living-with-his-mom-ness ("Mother! Throw me the house keys!")
      • In one episode, this Flanderization comes to a peak when Zack and Cody get him to make the place his own after his mother moved out. Since then, this aspect of the character was dropped.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Maddie explaining to London that a shoelace tip is called an aglet may have been a one-off joke, but if you take Ashley Tisdale's other role into consideration...
    • "Romancing the Phone" features Jaden Smith as Cody's karate teacher.
    • Maddie and Trevor's kiss in "Odd Couples" is funny enough, but if you take Zac Efron's and Ashley Tisdale's other roles in High School Musical into consideration, it becomes even funnier.
  • Les Yay: Maddie and London's shenanigans.
    • Acting as parents for a baby doll for a school project.
    • After a heart-to-heart talk about her father, London tries to buy diamond jewelry for Maddie.
    • "Time to strip and make the beds!"
    • "Poor Little Rich Girl":

London: "You took me in when no one else would. You like me for richer or poorer, for better or worse, in sickness and in health-"
Maddie: "We're not married, London."

  • Memetic Mutation: London's driving lesson with Mosbey and the PRNDL.
    • WOULD YOU LIKE AM OR FM?!
  • Retroactive Recognition: David Blue, who would go on to star as Eli Wallace in the Syfy series Stargate Universe appeared in the episode "Nurse Zack" as Dr. Chip Walters, the Tipton's young, inexperienced, and unprofessional staff physician.
    • Cole Sprouse (Cody) played Ben in Seasons 6-8 of Friends.
    • Trish shows up in one episode at a sleepover.
      • Of this was at Tess's sleepover.
  • Seasonal Rot: A notable change in quality occurred halfway through the second season.

The Suite Life on Deck

  • Base Breaker: Cailey. While the majority of fans agree they wanted together, when they were together fans cannot agree whether this was good for the show.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Bailey mentioned have 6 big sisters and 3 little ones in "Parrot Island" although in "Twister" she is implied to be an only child as no sisters are present.
  • Creator's Pet: Cody in Season 2 into Season 3. He acts like a complete prick and still he's the center of most episodes.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Cody again. Cailey fans tend to ignore the fact that he acts like a jackass or that he was obsessed with Bailey when he wasn't dating her.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Most fans choose to ignore the movie and a lot of fans don't speak of (or haven't even seen) the I'm in The Band crossover.
  • Flanderization: London again. Your Mileage May Vary on whether or not her stupidity has been cranked up, because she does have her smart moments.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Bob and Zack seemed to have a deeper relationship than just friends. Zack seemed very hurt that he had become mushy with Barbara. Of course, it was only played for laughs.
    • The recent "Beauty and the Fleeced" episode combined this with a Stupid Sexy Flanders incident where at the beginning Woody (sans glasses) is apparently describing an attractive girl before Zack points out that Woody just mistook Cody for a girl.
      • This could also be seen as a shot at Cody's masculinity
    • "Ala-ka-Scram" definitely makes an argument for Zack and Woody, especially during their makeup scene.
    • Les Yay: Although only for one episode Bailey and Jessica have a ton of this with some fabricated Foe Yay (to fool Cody) included.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: An author once wrote two stories about romances between Bailey and Jessica Ellis (who at the time was just one of two twins), then "Model Behavior" happened and Jessica and Bailey shared several Les Yay ridden scenes.
    • In another fanfic called 'Zoey 1803', Zack is turned into a girl named Zoey. Zack would later get a love interest played by a girl named Zoey.
    • In "My Oh Maya", Maya lists various drinks the smoothie bar sells. One of them is the Cherry Chiller. It was easy to miss at the time but fastforward to 2012 when McDonald's released a smoothie with a similar name
  • Replacement Scrappy: Maya was briefly this during the beginning of Season 3, due to viewers thinking she replaced Bailey. Speaking of which, Bailey herself was essentially this for Maddie at first.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Woody bestowed "Cailey" upon Cody and Bailey.
  • Seasonal Rot: From mid-Season 2 into the first few episodes of Season 3, wherein most characters' Flanderization came to a peak, and watching the show became something akin to rubbernecking at the train wreck. Once Season 3 got off to a roll, the characters began to recover their charm and depth.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Despite the show being about twins, Cody was the focus of virtually every episode for the first two seasons, Zack only appeared to be a one-joke character. However, it would seem the tables have turned in Zack's favor as of Season 3.
  • Take That: London's "your mom needs a hobby" in regards to Bailey's large family (Despite being rewritten) could be one at Kate Gosselin and other reality shows with large families
  • Tear Jerker: In "London's Christmas Carol", the part with her in the future and her future self going "I'm alone" and on the verge of tears.
