• My Greatest Failure: Having to watch as Mamoru Kodai (Susumu's older brother) sacrificed himself so Okita could retreat at the start of the series.

Susumu Kodai (Derek Wildstar)

• Dawson Casting: Takuya Kimura is old enough to have watched the original. Says it all, really.
  • On the other hand, Kodai is said to be 37 (Kimura's age at the time of filming) and a retired former soldier in the Live Action Adaptation.
• Death by Origin Story: actually his whole family, but Mamoru Kodai in particular connects him directly with Okita
• Friendly Sniper: If the job of firing the Wave Motion Gun doesn't qualify...

• Adaptational Badass: Analyzer loses the sex drive and becomes a Humongous Mecha in the 2010 movie. Though he's been shown to be a Pint-Sized Powerhouse on occasion in the original anime.

• What Measure Is a Non-Human?: usually played for laughs due him asking Sado for how to become more human (once resulting in him going in mission DRUNK), but there's a very sad episode showing the contrast between his robotic body and his very human feelings for Yuki.

Mamoru Kodai (Alex Wildstar)

• Dead Older Brother: Averted at the end of season 1 - Starsha found and nursed him back to health.
• Posthumous Character: Not.
• I Choose to Stay: Throws away his only chance to go home to stay with Starsha in the end.

• Hero of Another Story: a curious villain example. When he first appears, he just returned from the front against another unidentified enemy, and apparently defeated it so completely he's being hailed as an hero by the Gamilas people and Deslar himself. From the Gamilas point of view, HE is the hero.
