Xolga and Mr. Toko

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Xolga: Let’s get out of here.
Mr.Toko: Um, to where though?
Xolga: I don’t know. Take us to any world, any place, any time period. I bet that there are still a lot of worlds out there that we haven’t seen . . . And we’re still on an adventure, right?
Mr.Toko: . . . Yeah!

A series of Flash Point and Click Games by Pacthesis.

Xolga was a Private Detective spending a normal day in work when, suddenly, the agency gave him an assistant, a very young looking individual named Mr. Toko. Later, they were sent to retrieve a pendant, which happens to actually be an Artifact of Doom that then turned Xolga into a stuffed bear and Mr.Toko as a flying egg. Set to return back into humans, they go into an adventure and cross dimensions in chase of that pendant.

It has a sequel. The whole series can be played on Pacthesis' site.

Character sheet is here.

Tropes used in Xolga and Mr. Toko include:
  • Abandoned Hospital: the white room Mr. Toko keeps dreaming with turns out to be this after the reveal about Sam
  • Acid Trip Dimension: the final episode of the first series quickly degenerates into one
  • Amnesiac Hero: Mr. Toko fits this, but he starts getting his memories back during the sequel.
  • Arc Words: "Dreams" in the first series, "Friends" in the sequel.
  • Beary Cute: Xolga, the deuteragonist of the series, is a human transformed in a teddy bear by a magical artifact. His plushie form is apparently quite cute, judging by the amount of people who want to risk painful retaliation from the short-tempered and deceptively strong guy by hugging him.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Xolga and Mr. Toko have this dynamic.
  • Break the Cutie: Mr. Toko. Not only does he forget his memories for more than half of the series, but after he finally remembers everything, he believes that he wasn't meant to have friends because whatever friends he did have died; One he witnessed being killed, and the other died to keep Mr. Toko alive.
  • Crossover: with Pacthesis' other works.
  • Cursed with Awesome: unlike Xolga, Mr. Toko is absolutely delighted by the nature of the curse.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Mr. Toko. He apparently was a Professional Killer before becoming amnesiac, and before that we was abandoned in a hospital for years basically to die.
  • Darker and Edgier. The second season. The first one has his dark moments, but the second goes into exploring relentlessly bleak territory.
  • A Day in the Limelight: the series is one for the titular characters, as they are recurrent characters in Pacthesis' other games, usually as shopkeepers.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Xolga, oh so much.
  • Fan Service: This seems to be the purpose of the bonus extra after the end of the first Xolga and Mr. Toko series.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Xolga's survived one, with memorable moments like his mother being too drunk to correctly fill his birth record (and consequently being registered as Xolga instead of the intended Ryota) and his happiest memory being the day his mother was sober and nice enough to give him coins to play in a mechanic attraction.
  • Ironic Echo: In the second series, the opening sentences doesn't seem make sense at first. And then the seventh part comes along.
  • It's All My Fault: Xolga begins to develop this mindset during the first series and by the sequel Mr. Toko also develops this.
  • Keet: Mr. Toko.
  • Kid Sidekick: Xolga sees Toko as one. Not can you blame him...
  • Lotus Eater Machine: in the sixth episode of the first series, our protagonists fall into literal machines that bring back memories. The final episode of the first series states that the Locket can create those, as it trapped Xolga into one.
  • Meaningful Echo: "Friends forgive each other."
  • Odd Couple: our titular characters. Bonus points for being detectives too!
  • Meaningful Name: "Cigam", the name of the city the main characters live, is the word "magic" backwards.
  • Never the Selves Shall Meet: averted. Xolga mets (and gets help) from other versions of himself.
  • Once More, with Clarity: both series have each episode epigraphed with particular lines, who only get sense in the finale.
  • Only Sane Man: Xolga thinks of himself as this.
  • One-Gender Race: Dreamboat Kingdom in the sequel series. The Dreamboaters claim they have actual male and female individuals, but, to Xolga and Toko's eyes, there are all male, just "Bishie type" and "muscle type"
  • Parental Abandonment: Xolga's father bailed out the family for the sake of "follow his dreams". This act basically exacerbated his wife's alcoholism and shaped his son personality into deep-seated cynicism.
  • Perspective Flip: In the first series, the 3rd part was told in Kai's POV and the 6th was told in Mr.Toko's POV
  • Point and Click Game: the main gameplay style of the series.
  • The Pollyanna: no matter what happens, Mr. Toko is insanely upbeat and optimistic, to Xolga's frustration. Even on his time working as a hitman for the shadowy Organization he still was quite cheery and happy-go-lucky. Deconstructed during the second series, as his Dark and Troubled Past comes to light and with it, the amounts of deliberate denial he has to get to stay that way.
  • The Power of Friendship: comes to be key to solve several sticky situatuons.
  • Running Gag: Xolga seems to punch Mr. Toko quite a lot throughout the series, usually after his patience has thinned.
    • Kai can't resist to hug Bear!Xolga. He also gets punched by Xolga every time.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: The first series. After chasing The Locked for several dimensions the artifact then happily confess that it ate Xolga and Toko's original bodies, and that it cannot bring them back to their human appearances.
  • Significant Anagram: Mr. Toko is based from his real name: Tom Kro
  • Stepford Smiler: Mr. Toko
  • Sugar Bowl: Wonderland.
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: in the first series, after eight Point and Click episodes, the ninth one is a stats manager game, more similar to Patchesis' date sims gameplay. It's the first clue that the episode happens in a dream world
  • Wham! Line:
    • Episode 1-4: "Guilty"
    • Epidode 1-6: "What's wrong with you, Johnny?!"
    • Episode 2-7: Happy birthday Tom.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Discussed and Lampshaded, though Mr. Toko's name is deliberately chosen.
