Xolga and Mr. Toko/Characters
Xolga and Mr. Toko Themselves
Xolga Utsugi
One of the main protagonists, Xolga is a private investigator who was assigned a partner named Mr. Toko. They were on an assignment to retrieve a locket, but when Xolga touch it, he became a teddy bear. Throughout the first series, Xolga travels to different worlds with Mr. Toko to try to find the locket, and get back to normal. But he soon finds out that his and Mr. Toko’s body was eaten by the locket, so now they are would be stuck in their substitute bodies forever.
- All in The Manual: Xolga's family name was revealed first in the Special episode.
- Anti-Hero: of the classical Jerk Ass/hear-of-gold-hiding variety
- Arc Words: "I just mess everything up"
- Bishōnen: as a human, at least.
- Celibate Hero: unlike Mr. Toko, who is very vocal on his romantic aspirations, Xolga doesn't show interest on romance and has no love life to talk about.
- Deadpan Snarker: oh yes.
- Determinator: is very set into having his human body back.
- Everything Is Worse With Bears: being transformed into one is just the beginning of his troubles.
- Grumpy Bear: literally so!
- Hilariously Abusive Childhood: his father abandoned the family, his mother was a mean alcoholic, he was teased on school for his unusual name, and eventually ran away from home. Played for laughs (sometimes bitter ones).
(on how his mom gave him his unusual name) I was supposed to be named "Ryota", but she drank a little too much when it was time to fill out my baby information. |
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: he may be a jerk, but you can count on that he will do the right thing.
- Running Gag: he tends to punch anyone who pushes his limits, usually Mr. Toko.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight to Mr. Toko's wisecracking.
- Younger Than He Looks: as a human he looks on his mid-twenties but he is only 19 years old.
Mr. Toko/Johnny
The other main protagonist. An incredibly upbeat young man that was assigned as Xolga's assistant, and gets also involved on the locket assignment. He got transformed into some sort of floating egg creature. Claims to be of drinking age, but looks prepubescent on his human form. Has a Mysterious Past of the Dark and Troubled variety that gets gradually revealed during the series. His current name is an alias, anagramated from his real name, Tom Kro; "Jphnny" was the alias he had during the time he spent as a contract killer.
- Amnesiac Hero -> Identity Amnesia
- Bi the Way: according to Pacthesis, he's bisexual.
- Break the Cutie: gradually experiments one thorough the series as his past is uncovered and his positive outlook is challenged, but the 7th episode of the second series is the most devastating blow.
- Cartoon Creature/Cephalothorax: his transformed form.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: he may be quite loopy, but he can be extremely competent when the situation merits it, and as the first episode shows, he is quite proficient with weapons.
- Deuteragonist: mostly in the first series, as in the second focuses more on him and his past.
- My Greatest Failure: being unable to save his friends from terrible fates
- Hot Amazon: Mr. Toko likes his ladies tall and muscular and never shuts up about it.
- Keet: the poster boy.
- Older Than He Looks/Vague Age: he (and the author) claims to be 21, but as a human looks 12 at most. From what it's revealed from his past, he could be actually any age from 10 to 30. He may be 21 in calendar years, but most of those years were spent in fantasy suspended animation so he is mentally and physically the age he looks.
- The Pollyanna: Mr. Toko is extremely optimistic and takes everything with cheerful stride. Deconstructed during the second series, as it gradually downs to the players and to Mr. Toko himself that his amnesia is the only reason he could maintain such upbeat attitude for so long.
- Professional Killer: when he worked for the Organization as Johnny.
- Sidekick: to Xolga.
- Stepford Smiler: Turns into one during the second series.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: The wise guy to Xolga's Straight Man.
Xolga's relatives and friends
Kai Utsugi
Xolga's cousin and the only relative who consistently cares for him. Kai is also the POV character of the third chapter on the first series. Continually appears thorough the series to show how much time has passed.
- Continuity Nod: to his own game, Memory Days, where he is one of the romantic options.
Xolga: Don't you at least have a girlfriend? |
- Demoted to Extra: From principal romantic interest on his own game, to recurrent character here.
- Nice Guy: in contrast to Xolga's jerkassery
- Perspective Flip: his POV episode
- Secret Keeper: Learns about Xolga's curse near the end of the first season
Aro Utsugi
Xolga's father. He left the family years ago to "pursuit his dreams". Xolga deeply resents him.
- All in The Manual: his last name
- Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: the reason he abandoned his family on first place
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: he may be a jerk, but he cares for his child and comes back to care of his wife after she tries to take her life
- Parental Abandonment
Ryoko Satome-Utsugi
Xolga's mother, a chronically depressed and alcoholic woman. Xolga describes her as mean.
- All in The Manual: Her last name.
- Abusive Parent: of the neglectful variety.
- The Alcoholic: played for black comedy.
- Driven to Suicide: Already depressed by her husband leaving her, when she learns that her son disappeared without a trace it becomes the last straw and tries to kill herself
Linda
Xolga's blond colleague in the detective agency.
- Small Role, Big Impact Has she go for the locket instead of watching her show and dumping the assignment on Xolga, things would have go vastly different.
Walter
Xolga and Toko's boss in the detective agency.
- Benevolent Boss: hired Xolga while he was still a minor, and seems a pretty reasonable man overall.
- Small Role, Big Impact. he is the one who paired Xolga and Toko together, starting the plot.
People from Mr. Toko's Past
As Mr. Toko's past gets revealed during both game series, so are the people who used to be involved with him back then. Most of these characters, due to how they appear, are Walking Spoilers.
Blake / Austin Lockwood
One of the members of the mysterious organization Toko used to work, and his best friend during his time there. Appears in the sixth episode of the first series, helping Toko/Johnny to escape. Like Toko, he's cheerful and laid-back, but has his own dark past: apparently, he was inducted into the organization after he lost his brother due to some unspecified "weakness" on his part.
- Big Brother Instinct: feels this towards Toko/Johnny, as he is reminded of his little brother.
- Famous Last Words: "Thanks."
- Pretty Little Headshots: how he is killed
- Posthumous Character: Blake has been Dead All Along, but since the episode he appears is a flashback we don't learn this until the end.
- Purple Eyes: he is a very mysterious character so it's expected.
- Retirony: wants to leave the Organization and bonds with our main character about how much they'd love to be outside. Guess what happens to him?
- You Remind Me Of My Little Brother: To Mr. Toko.
Issac
The leader of the mysterious organization Toko (then "Johnny") used to work before losing his memories. He apparently recruits his personnel by saving their lives with his healing powers
- Blinding Bangs: his hairstyle
- Boom! Headshot!: How he kills Blake
- Icy Blue Eyes: Only are seen one at a time in close-ups, as they are usually hidden behind his hair. They look both cold and guilt-ridden.
- Foregone Conclusion: After killing Blake, he more or less says that it was his destiny.
- For Your Own Good: the last thing he tell Johnny before stealing his memories.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: He not only saves Tom/Johnny from the hospital, he let him abandon the Organization (which was established as a serve-until-you-die, if-you-want-out-you-must-die type of criminal syndicate) at the prize of his memories
- Man in White: he dress this way to stand out over his own employees.
- The Nicknamer: he personally gave his hitmen their codenames.
- Superpower Lottery: Healing Hands and memory alteration
Sam
First appearing on the second series, Sam is the person appearing on Mr Toko's dreams and the poem at the beginning of every chapter.
- Not-So-Imaginary Friend: the game doesn't clarify what exactly Sam was, only that he wasn't completely part of Tom/Mr. Toko's imagination and that he had enough power on his own to have keep Tom isolated of the world for almost a decade.
- Posthumous Character: He was Dead All Along even when Tom speaks with him.
- The Reveal: The human representation of Sam we see in the indent card and Mr. Toko's dreams? That's not him. Sam was actually an stuffed toy that was given to Tom, when he was hospitalized as a kid. Tom, who was extremely ill and couldn't interact with other kids, played a lot with the toy, gave it a name, and treated it like it was alive. Somehow, the toy gained enough sentience to feel love towards its owner, and enough magical power to try and keep Tom in a bubble of "frozen time" to ward off his imminent death. The bubble was so powerful, that when the hospital closed they forgot Tom was there, and both kid and toy would have been in the decayed hospital for a even longer time had Sam not lost his power on time for a dying Tom to be found by Isaac.
