Xolga and Mr. Toko/Characters

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Xolga and Mr. Toko Themselves

Xolga Utsugi

One of the main protagonists, Xolga is a private investigator who was assigned a partner named Mr. Toko. They were on an assignment to retrieve a locket, but when Xolga touch it, he became a teddy bear. Throughout the first series, Xolga travels to different worlds with Mr. Toko to try to find the locket, and get back to normal. But he soon finds out that his and Mr. Toko’s body was eaten by the locket, so now they are would be stuck in their substitute bodies forever.

(on how his mom gave him his unusual name) I was supposed to be named "Ryota", but she drank a little too much when it was time to fill out my baby information.

Mr. Toko/Johnny

The other main protagonist. An incredibly upbeat young man that was assigned as Xolga's assistant, and gets also involved on the locket assignment. He got transformed into some sort of floating egg creature. Claims to be of drinking age, but looks prepubescent on his human form. Has a Mysterious Past of the Dark and Troubled variety that gets gradually revealed during the series. His current name is an alias, anagramated from his real name, Tom Kro; "Jphnny" was the alias he had during the time he spent as a contract killer.

Xolga's relatives and friends

Kai Utsugi

Xolga's cousin and the only relative who consistently cares for him. Kai is also the POV character of the third chapter on the first series. Continually appears thorough the series to show how much time has passed.

  • Continuity Nod: to his own game, Memory Days, where he is one of the romantic options.

Xolga: Don't you at least have a girlfriend?
Kai: ...It's complicated.

Aro Utsugi

Xolga's father. He left the family years ago to "pursuit his dreams". Xolga deeply resents him.

Ryoko Satome-Utsugi

Xolga's mother, a chronically depressed and alcoholic woman. Xolga describes her as mean.

Linda

Xolga's blond colleague in the detective agency.

  • Small Role, Big Impact Has she go for the locket instead of watching her show and dumping the assignment on Xolga, things would have go vastly different.

Walter

Xolga and Toko's boss in the detective agency.

  • Benevolent Boss: hired Xolga while he was still a minor, and seems a pretty reasonable man overall.
  • Small Role, Big Impact. he is the one who paired Xolga and Toko together, starting the plot.

People from Mr. Toko's Past

As Mr. Toko's past gets revealed during both game series, so are the people who used to be involved with him back then. Most of these characters, due to how they appear, are Walking Spoilers.

Blake / Austin Lockwood

One of the members of the mysterious organization Toko used to work, and his best friend during his time there. Appears in the sixth episode of the first series, helping Toko/Johnny to escape. Like Toko, he's cheerful and laid-back, but has his own dark past: apparently, he was inducted into the organization after he lost his brother due to some unspecified "weakness" on his part.

Issac

The leader of the mysterious organization Toko (then "Johnny") used to work before losing his memories. He apparently recruits his personnel by saving their lives with his healing powers

  • Blinding Bangs: his hairstyle
  • Boom! Headshot!: How he kills Blake
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Only are seen one at a time in close-ups, as they are usually hidden behind his hair. They look both cold and guilt-ridden.
  • Foregone Conclusion: After killing Blake, he more or less says that it was his destiny.
  • For Your Own Good: the last thing he tell Johnny before stealing his memories.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: He not only saves Tom/Johnny from the hospital, he let him abandon the Organization (which was established as a serve-until-you-die, if-you-want-out-you-must-die type of criminal syndicate) at the prize of his memories
  • Man in White: he dress this way to stand out over his own employees.
  • The Nicknamer: he personally gave his hitmen their codenames.
  • Superpower Lottery: Healing Hands and memory alteration

Sam

First appearing on the second series, Sam is the person appearing on Mr Toko's dreams and the poem at the beginning of every chapter.

  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: the game doesn't clarify what exactly Sam was, only that he wasn't completely part of Tom/Mr. Toko's imagination and that he had enough power on his own to have keep Tom isolated of the world for almost a decade.
  • Posthumous Character: He was Dead All Along even when Tom speaks with him.
  • The Reveal: The human representation of Sam we see in the indent card and Mr. Toko's dreams? That's not him. Sam was actually an stuffed toy that was given to Tom, when he was hospitalized as a kid. Tom, who was extremely ill and couldn't interact with other kids, played a lot with the toy, gave it a name, and treated it like it was alive. Somehow, the toy gained enough sentience to feel love towards its owner, and enough magical power to try and keep Tom in a bubble of "frozen time" to ward off his imminent death. The bubble was so powerful, that when the hospital closed they forgot Tom was there, and both kid and toy would have been in the decayed hospital for a even longer time had Sam not lost his power on time for a dying Tom to be found by Isaac.
