Miraculous Ladybug/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Miraculous Ladybug are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Abandon Shipping: Some people are so tired of Marinette/Ladybug and Adrien/Chat's constant back and fourth, they've just given up on waiting for them. Chat Blanc, Ephemeral, and the love square switching has convinced some to stay however some are done all together.
    • If we're being specific; Adrienette lost viewers due to Marinette's becoming more and more stalkerish as the third season went and/or how Adrien acted (at first) during the Lila episodes, LadyNoir was abandoned either due to Chat Noir's Entitled to Have You tendencies or Ladybug becoming more harsh towards Chat as well as keeping him out of the loop regarding her being a Guardian, and Ladrien due to not getting any scenes as of late. Only MariChat seems to have gotten away mostly unscathed, having gotten some good development.
    • Adrien/Kagami lost shippers when it was shown Adrien kept lying to her (some with good reason, but still) and Kagami didn't like him being goofy (i.e being like Chat Noir, who is implied to be his real self).
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Stormy Weather know the ice capsule had sharp icicles descending on Alya and Manon or was that something that was out of her control? And before then, did Alec prod Aurore with the fact Mireille winning just to be an asshole or is he that Innocently Insensitive?
    • The Pharaoh reveals Alix has an older brother named Jalil, yet in Timebreaker, the pocket watch (actually the bunny miraculous) is a family heirloom. Why doesn't their father give it to Jalil? Parental Favoritism or is it because Alix is more mature than him? Alix, for all her own faults, is one of the show's most(ly) consistent only sane women.
    • Did Chat accidentally create Copycat out of his own jealousy or did he feel Theo's crush on Ladybug was creepy and decided to make up a lie to protect her, unaware Theo would get akumatized because of it? A mixture of both?
      • Alya's reaction to Marinette knowing Adrien's schedule. Is she joking when she said Marinette is insane or was she genuinely freaked out? Marinette, at least, seems to think it's the former considering her reaction.
    • In 'Gamer', was Max really mad that Marinette won because she was a girl or was it because he's just a Sore Loser, gender notwithstanding? Alternatively, he was sad because Marinette took his spot from the tournament he worked so hard to gain, when he probably thought at best, she wouldn't get close or at worst, replace Adrien.
    • Is the thing on Reflekta's head meant to be hair or a helmet?
  • Ass Pull: The later established Glamour for many. Since not only are they shown to recognize the other's voice when they're not in costume, but there's are several points where they are almost thought to be Ladybug and Chat Noir, but something else stops the person from thinking that. Notable examples are: sometimes when Chloe cosplays as Ladybug, she wears a wig akin to Marinette's hair and the whole episode of 'Frightingale' where it's a plot point that Adrien and Marinette are scared to wear the masks to the Chat Noir and Ladybug costumes for Clara's music video because then people will realize how similar to them they look and possibly figure out the truth.
  • Base Breaker: To her fans, Marinette is seen as a sweet angelic being who deserves the world. To her detractors, she is stalkerish designated hero who is creepy towards her crush and mean towards anyone she sees as an obstacle to her getting with Adrien. Her stepping away from her fangirl tendencies and befriending Kagami has gotten her some fans, however some still don't like her either because they can't let go of her past actions or that she still shows Designated Hero tendencies occasionally. Some fans just don't like how the show treats her actions as justifiable or how her fans treat anyone who treats her with a tiny bit of animosity gets a glut of Revenge fics made about them.
    • Ladybug, awesome badass hero or a huge hypocritical control freak that's rude and dismissive towards to her partner?
    • Adrien is either seen as a poor precious woobie who needs to get out of Gabriel's harsh grip quickly or a dense oblivious pansy who's blind to see Ladybug and Marinette aren't the same person. Adrien breaking away from Lila and him seemingly falling in love with Marinette has gained him some fans. Yet his detractors are adamant about never letting down his weaker points.
    • Chat Noir, goofy yet adorable prankster that just wants to Ladybug to love him or a gross entitled sexual harasser? The latter opinions has calmed down since he seemingly fell out of love with her, though like Marinette/Ladybug and his civilian self, this is ignored by his detractors.
    • Chloe Bourgeois. A traitorous petty bully who was cruel to almost everyone around her and was rightfully removed from the team or a poor girl who never got love from her mother, so she lashed out but was mistreated by Ladybug and was wrongfully replaced by her own sister. The latter half hated her redemption arc getting removed.
    • Zoe Lee. Her fans say she's a sweet girl who's done nothing wrong. However, her detractors say that that's the problem and she's a bland boring girl who was introduced to make Chloe look worse and that's not to mention the unnecessary shilling she gets. Even some non-Chloe fans agree with the latter half, thinking she was just there to get the Bee Miraculous and nothing else.
  • Crossover Ship: MariBat/Ladybat/Daminette (Damian Wayne/Marinette)
  • Die For Your Ship: Both Luka and Kagami as soon as they were revealed to be interested in Adrien and Marinette.
    • Nathaniel and Chloé early on, though it has since faded. The former once Marc (his implied love interest) and Luka (Marinette's actual second love interest) were introduced, the latter once the show stopped treating Chloé as a threat for Adrien's love and Kagami (Adrien's actual second love interest) was introduced.
  • Fandom-Specific Plot: Marinette and Adrien discover the other's identities.
    • Someone calls out Lila's lies or remembers that Google exists and everything Lila says can be disproven by the most basic of fact checks.
    • Someone gets a Miraculous. Maybe an unused one or maybe it's an Alternate Universe where they got one that's already been assigned to someone else.
      • There's a subcategory of this plot. Where after a specific point of episodes, Ladybug or Chat get their miraculous taken away and get replaced with someone else (whether it's a canon character or an OC depends).
    • A lot of 'Lady Wifi' rewrites have Chloe (or just a morally better character) keep the punishment to its original length of one hour (since while the punishment was a bit much, Alya taking a picture of her locker is still wrong), however Alya still gets upset and becomes Lady Wifi. An alternative is that Alya gets her punishment shortened but Alya's already run out of the room by that point and doesn't find out until after she's defeated.
    • In the early days of the fanbase, it was popular to handwave Marinette's creepy action of knowing Adrien's schedule in 'Copycat' by saying she does to everybody. This has been jossed by canon but people (particularly people who like Marinette but want her to seem less stalkery) have held on to this headcanon.
      • Similarly, Chat's actions in 'Copycat' are handwaved by his fans. In rewrites, even if Chat isn't trying to be malicious or even if he doesn't like Ladybug in that way, Theo will find some way to see it as romantic and become Copycat regardless.
      • Other frequent rewrites of "Copycat" include:
        • Theo's crush on Ladybug's Squick factor is removed by it being revealed Theo thinks Ladybug is a great old goddess that just looks super young or that he's younger than he looks thus lessening the Squick.
        • If Ladybug does make it to the unveiling, either she gushes over Chat (this typically happens in Swap AUs) or she tries to gently reject Theo which makes Theo jump to conclusions and assume the reason is Chat (whether he's right or not also depends on the AU/fanfic). Either way, Theo still becomes Copycat.
        • In Chat salt fics, Theo tells Ladybug what Chat said to him. Ladybug, upset he caused an akuma attack, gives him an earful.
        • On the flipside, if Marinette is the one in the hot seat: Tikki doesn't help Marinette get Adrien's phone, leaving Marinette to try and force her way inside Adrien's locker, though she still manages to leave before she's caught. Once Adrien gets back and detransforms, the locker is dented and he's very shaken it. Whether or not she gets her hands on his phone, she does not get her wish of going to the movies with him.
      • In Anti-Bug rewrites, either Chloe doesn't lie to the heroes about how Sabrina became Vanisher or Ladybug (whoever has the ladybug miraculous) decides to listen to Chloe about how to defeat Vanisher, thus Chloe doesn't become Anti-Bug.
        • If it's a Ladybug salt fic, Ladybug will be lambasted the whole chapter about how Antibug could've been avoided if she had just listened. It's even worse in fics, where Chloe is genuinely a better person, thus making Ladybug not trusting her look very biased and rude.
        • Sometimes, Ladybug won't go back to being Chloe's favorite. If there's another person in the group, they'll become her new favorite. Other times if Marinette gets the ladybug miraculous taken from her, Chloe will say the new Ladybug miraculous holder is her favorite.
  • Fan Nickname: 'Bridgette' for Marinette in the original PV.
    • Socqueline has been named 'canon Bridgette' due to her resemblance to her.
    • Ladybug! Chloe is often called Scarlet Lady due to a popular web-comic (though due to that comic not having her be redeemed, this is mostly In Name Only in fics).
    • Marigold for Bee!Marinette also thanks to the popular web-comic.
    • Coccinelle is a commonly used alternative name for Ladybug users, but specifically it has been used for Ladybug!Luka.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Of the Love Square's combinations, Marinette/Chat Noir seems the most popular, as it's the combo in which they just talk openly and honestly to each other.
    • On the other side, Chloe's more likely to be deemed a lesbian by the fanbase and be shipped with either Alix or Kagami. Even if she kept liking men, she's more likely to be shipped with Luka than the any of her canon male interests she's interacted with (Adrien/Kim).
  • Fanfic Fuel: Chloé getting a full fledged redemption arc. Her doubling down in the later season has made fan work creators double down on this narrative.
    • We've seen canon!Felix, what would canon!Bridgette be like? Assuming you don't think she and Marinette or Socqueline are the same character.
    • What would Princess Justice and Verity Queen look and act like?
      • Honestly, what would any of Marinette's almost akumatized forms look and act like?
  • Fanon Discontinuity:
    • Season 3 through 5 haven't been received well by fans for a multitude of reasons (Adrien/Chat being reduced more and more, Chloe losing her Character Development and becoming worse as the seasons went on, Felix and especially Gabriel becoming Karma Houdinis, everything about Zoe, etc). Many wish the show would've ended at season 2 or at least that the later seasons would've been severely rewritten.
    • As far as Chloe's fans know, the Face Heel Turn she made as well as the other awful actions she did in the later seasons never happened.
    • Similarly, as far as they know (though it isn't just Chloe fans who think this) Zoe doesn't exist. And even if she does, she almost never gets the Bee miraculous or any miraculous for that matter.
    • The statue scene from 'Puppeteer 2' is disliked for how creepy it is by detractors and fans alike because Marinette sniffs and is generally creepy. 'Determination' made this worse by revealing it's when Adrien fell in love with her.
    • The whole episode of 'Derision' due to how demonized Kim is as well as the horrible explanation for Marinette's stalkerish tendencies. Essentially it's because of a horrible prank by Kim that traumatized Marinette, however we never see her get PTSD from this event in earlier seasons plus she is able to act normal (well, more normal than herself when she's with Adrien) when she's with her other crushes (i.e Luka and Chat Noir).
    • The "if you know each other's identities, you'll lose your miraculous" rule due to how much the show flip-flops on it as well as it's genuinely seen as an Ass Pull to slow Marinette and Adrien from knowing their identities.
    • You'll hear more people calling Alt Universe Ladybug her french name: Toxinelle, instead of Shadybug simply because it sounds cooler.
  • Fanon: Ladybug's akumatized form, she was initially called Miss Fortune, though it has changed to Princess Justice per her and her mother, Sabine, almost getting akumatized. Though both have been used together, Miss Fortune for Ladybug and Princess Justice for Marinette. There's does seen to be a canon (or at least third) name in the form of Shadybug, but as of now, it's mostly mostly handwaved since that's a name for Alt Universe-Marinette.
    • You'll see more fics depicting Felix as Adrien's older brother than cousin.
    • Alec is Manon's father. The evidence is he's the only other TV personality on the show, that, like Manon, is dark-skinned and he and Nadja do seem to be on good terms.
    • A few fans headcanon the reason Marinette (or whoever has the ladybug miraculous in fanfiction) had the book is because she was using the Ladybug Miraculous to get back home from school faster or she was using it for personal reasons. The evidence being we don't see Chat Noir with her, the book is the real deal and not a polka dotted lucky charm, and Marinette when watching the video doesn't mention an akuma.
    • Nino and Chris have neglectful parents hence why Nino is always taking care of Chris and why he was so quick to take the actions of Gabriel in "The Bubbler" and apply it to every adult.
    • Some fanfics that rewrite the episode 'Rogercop' provide an explanation for why Adrien had to manually remove Plagg from Chloé's bracelet instead of allowing Plagg to phase through it, as he had done on numerous occasions in the past. According to these fanfics, the reason behind this is because Chloe's bracelet is some magic artifact (the specifics often depend of the writer).
    • Thanks to Alt!Adrien having a crush on Alt!Marinette, many viewers have made Shadybug have a crush on Claw Noir to fully reverse the love square.
  • Fashion Victim Villain: Granted half the time, it's deliberate. However other times, the villain in question is supposed to be intimidating or at least taken seriously, they look too ridiculous for the audience to do so.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With the Batman franchise (namely thanks to MariBat). Though with how much fan works it has to the point people who are looking for either fanfic of one them have to filter them out the other (or just try and avoid them all together in some fic sites' cases) and several fics are also 'salt' fics of this show, there is some Fandom Rivalry there as well.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Or Hilarious, depends on how you see it. The episode 'Animan' starts with Adrien teasingly saying Marinette would never find in love with a statue, a certain scene in 'Puppeteer 2' would beg to differ.
  • Narm: The face Marinette pulls in 'Copycat' after Alya calls her insane. It's probably supposed to be cute or at least funny, however several people just found it weird to look at.
  • Never Live It Down: Chloé undergoing Flanderization in the season 3 finale is this to her stans.
    • For his detractors, anytime Adrien is too oblivious to Marinette's feelings and Chat Noir makes Ladybug uncomfortable/annoyed.
    • For her detractors, anytime Marinette is being creepy towards Adrien or Ladybug is rude to Chat Noir.
    • The whole class during any Lila episode will get a glut of revenge fics thrown at them.
  • No Yay: Unless you use his Jerk With A Heart of Gold portrayal or tons of Fanon Discontinuity, Felix/Marinette is seen as this.
    • To some, the Love Square is seen as this whether because Chat is flirting often goes unrequited or Marinette's crush on Adrien becomes creepy at some points. 'Chat Blanc' and the love square recently reversing has convinced some to stay and gained back some shippers. Though for some, this just reminded people of the Arc Fatigue and made some people done with the ship for good.
    • On a minor level, some people don't like Ladrian because they think it's boring compared to the other side of the love square.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Zoé for Chloé fans, though non-fans of her also think of Zoé as this. The fact she gets this in the same episode she's introduced, complete with Character Shilling, doesn't put her in the best light for some fans.
    • This became even worse for Zoé when Plagg chose her to become a temporary Cat miraculous holder. While Tikki choosing Alya makes sense since she's Marinette's best friend and knows that she's Ladybug, outside of her getting Character Shilling from him, he has no reason to do this.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Adrien/Chat has gotten this from people getting annoyed of Chat acting like he was entitled to Ladybug's feelings and Adrien wanting to take the high ground in a lot of situations.
    • Marinette/Ladybug has gotten this for being creepy towards Adrien, mean/condescending towards her rivals (Chloé and Kagami) and mean to Chat Noir.
    • Majority or all of Ms. Bustier's class for believing Lila's lies over Marinette has made fic writers write up a bunch of revenge fics.
    • Zoe is an interesting case. Thanks to her Replacement Scrappy status, she's often relegated to not being a bee miraculous or a miraculous at all. Some even just turn her into Bitch in Sheep's Clothing that only acts nice to make herself look better than Chloe (and to ironically, give her an actual personality). Then there are fics where she flat out doesn't exist.
  • Sacred Cow: Mylene/Ivan.
    • Nathaniel/Marc.
  • Ship Mates: The Love Square goes hand in hand with Nino/Alya.
    • Luka/Adrien with Marinette/Kagami or Kagami/Chloé.
    • Felix/Kagami with Chloe/Luka.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Due to both being self-relying villains, people have paired up Felix and Lila up.
    • Despite not meeting, there's also Felix/Socqueline, due to the latter's resemblance to 'Bridgette' (Marinette in the original PV).
    • Nino and Sabrina don't know each other that well, but they're a growing alternate pairing for people who don't like Alya (and thus, DJWifi) but like Nino enough to not want him alone.
    • Chloe/Nathaniel were shipped together to get rid of obstacles for the Love Square. It somewhat faded after Marc (and Luka/Kagami) were introduced, but it's not gone.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • In 'The Evillustrator', when the titular villain sees Chat Noir attempting to save Marinette, he accuses Marinette of being like Chloe. Special notice of him saying they both 'lead him on'. We never see this occurring beforehand and as far as the audience knew Nathaniel hated Chloe just for being a bully like everyone else.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Minor but anytime Alya gets temporarily taken out by the villain but it's because she was trying to get footage of the battle for her blog.
    • Marinette in 'The Bubbler' for some. At the end, she doesn't get the satisfaction of having Adrien know it was her scarf since Nathalie gave it to Adrien as a gift from Gabriel. However, due to her using her Lucky Charm to break up Adrien and Chloe and taken advantage of Nathalie being taken to give Adrien her gift, some take it as karma.
    • Mr. Ramier in any of his main episodes. He gets told off for feeding the pigeons. However, Roger is right that not only is it illegal to feed the pigeons in Paris, but feeding them makes them their waste everywhere. However, he gets upset whenever he gets told off for never following the rules/law. This is made worse by the fact it's revealed in later episodes, he's one of the most frequent villains Ladybug and Chat Noir have to fight.
    • Jalil in 'The Pharaoh', we're made to feel sorry for him that his father doesn't share his thoughts about the Pharaoh. However, not only is he misusing precious artifacts that could cost his father his job but he's aware before he gets akumatized that the ritual needs a sacrifice to work, meaning he was all for sacrificing a human for bringing back the dead.
    • Roger in "Rogercop". Yes, he did nothing wrong to lose his job in this episode. However, with how incompetent a cop he is as well as him just sometimes being rude to people for no reason, some people would rather he stay fired.
    • Let's just say neither Chat or Marinette were particularly liked during 'Copycat'.
      • Chat because he's essentially the reason the conflict happened in the first place. He spurned on Theo and even smugly waved once he stormed off. Though, his defenders have tried to defend him pointing out: he might've been trying to protect Ladybug and that there's a decent chance Theo would've gotten akumatized regardless.
      • Marinette isn't liked in this episode either. She accidently gives Adrien an embarrassing voicemail, so what does do to fix the problem? Sneak into his fencing class (thus missing the statue unveiling) and steal his phone. Also her being annoyed at Chat and Copycat made people think she was acting childish. Many did not think she should've gotten her wish of going to the movies with Adrien at the end.
      • Minor examples for Alya and Tikki. The former for giving Marinette the idea to steal his phone and Tikki for using her powers to open the Adrien's locker to help Marinette with stealing it!
    • Marinette in 'The Gamer'. Granted she feels bad for it and kind of gets called out for it by Alya, but she takes Max's chance to play in the tournament just to be with Adrien. Her trying to give her position to him at the end gained her back some fans but needless to say, many people were glad Marinette didn't end up playing with Adrien.
      • More debatable but Max for those that believe he got mad at Marinette winning because she's a girl.
    • Marinette/Ladybug in the 'Santa Claws: A Christmas Special' for attacking Santa Claus because she thought he was an akuma and that being the thing that broke the camel's back and made him actually turn into one! Not helping is that aside from Santa Claws first targeting her, neither Adrien (neither as himself or Chat) or Santa call her out for this.
  • What An Idiot: Honestly anytime Alya puts herself in danger for the sake of her blog.
    • In 'The Pharaoh', Marinette could have avoided the whole need to lie to Alya if she didn't drop her textbook as Ladybug (why she did that in the first place is never explained).
    • In 'Lady Wifi', apparently the school doesn't have a policy regarding privacy, and Chloe has to resort to fake crying to get Alya punished. While the punishment she ends up giving out is too much, she should in fact be able to feel safe at school.
      • Alya also believes Chloe is Ladybug despite seeing Chloe being saved by Ladybug in the 'Origins' episodes and them being seen at the same time of several battles. This is lampshaded as Nino asks several times if she has proof, Marinette mentions she doesn't check her facts and Chat flat out calls her out on it.
      • Lady Wifi has both Ladybug and Chat in her clutches and pulls at her mask instead of her earrings, however that's not the idiotic part. The idiotic part is that Hawk Moth never corrects her and instead tells her to let Ladybug use her lady charm which does seem to work but is thwarted. If Hawk Moth had just told Lady Wifi her miraculous was her earrings, they might've actually won.
    • Both Marinette and Chat in "Copycat":
      • Chat for essentially causing the akuma attack in the first place. While you could argue he was trying to protect Ladybug from Theo, Chat could've at least tried to keep his mouth shut and maybe Theo wouldn't have turned into Copycat.
      • Some have wondered why Alya didn't just suggest Marinette text Adrien (or even offer to text for her) instead of having an embarrassing one-sided phone conversation. Then, Marinette wouldn't have to steal Adrien's phone to delete an embarrassing voicemail.
    • Granted there is Informed Wrongness on Ladybug's part, but still, several fans have pointed out if Ladybug had listened to Chloe about defeating Vanisher, she wouldn't have to deal with her as Antibug.
    • Ladybug attacking Santa in 'Santa Claws: A Christmas Special'. Not only is he clearly not akumatized, but she doesn't listen to Adrien, when he tries to tell her he isn't. By time, she realizes the truth and tries to apologize, Santa is upset enough to actually be akumatized!
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back? Ondine regarding Kim in 'Derision'. You can argue since he's remorseful at the end, he deserves a second chance but with all his actions in that episode being so bad, fans were wondering why she didn't dump him.
    • A huge chunk of the audience had this reactions towards Marinette's crush on Adrien when it's revealed he knew Lila was lying but was trying to take the high road regarding the situation. This has lessened since he has cut off Lila but this opinion still persists.
    • On the flipside, Chat Noir has also gotten this reaction regarding how Ladybug treats him and later how he gets locked out the loop due to her becoming a guardian. Some fans cannot believe it took five seasons for Chat to not have a crush on her anymore.
  • What the Hell, Costuming Department?: Some feel this way about Marinette's season 1-3 Ladybug costume, feeling it's way too simple for a ladybug hero and looks more like pajamas than an actual suit. Several fans have said most other users of the Ladybug miraculous have had more better/creative designs (yes, this includes Anti-Bug). This seems to have lessened as per her costume evolution in season 4, however fans just said that should've been her suit from the get-go.
    • Her Cosmobug suit also gets this due to the abundance of bright lights replacing her spots, the neon blue hair and the fact unlike AstroCat, her helmet only covers her face and not her entire head.
    • Ladybug's unified suits have gotten this reaction too.
      • Pegabug (Pegasus/Ladybug) has gotten this because there's too much white in the costume (as well as the highlights in her hair) and that the brown/grays clash with ladybug's red suit.
      • Pennybug (Pegasus/Bunny/Ladybug)! Granted some think it's cute, while others say it's the most revolting unify suit. Due to again, the abundance of clashing colors, the giant puffy sleeves and the highlights in her hair. Some believe these components wouldn't be so bad on their own but together, it looks like a jumbled mess.
