Shoutouts to SimpleFlips!

Yo what up?

SimpleFlips, real name Eddie Cruz (born: September 14, 1995), is an American YouTuber, streamer and speedrunner, mostly known for his presence in the Super Mario 64 scene. He is known for his multitude of running jokes and memes that are referenced in his content, and is a member of the YouTube group Minus World. He is also close friends with Vinesauce's Joel, as well as TheOdd1sOut.

SimpleFlips often holds themed Super Mario 64 ROM Hack contests, and his channel primarily consists of Super Mario 64 ROM hack gameplay. He also has plenty of content from Super Mario Maker and its sequel, Super Mario Maker 2, as well as various Tetris games.

His YouTube channel is here, his Twitter can be found here, and his Twitch channel is here here; this channel hosts a mass majority of his full streams.

The following hacks were created for contests and competitions that SimpleFlips hosted, listed in order from highest- to lowest-scoring:

His videos provide examples of the following:

  • Ascended Meme: Both the Green Demon and 'gay baby jail' appeared as "cheats" available for SimpleFlips' viewers during a Crowd Control playthrough of Super Mario 64; naturally, viewers took to springing them on SimpleFlips as soon as they could, which the video's opening animation even alludes to. A common combination was using the gay baby jail cheat to hold Mario in place and prevent escape from the Green Demon - usually just moments away from collecting a Star.
  • Awesome Yet Impractical/Difficult but Awesome: Tends towards maneuvers of this nature for the sake of displaying his extensive speedrunning skills; more often than not, this takes far longer than completing the objective in question normally, but it's usually worth it for the sheer spectacle.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty: "Gay baby jail" was floating around the internet for quite a while, appearing as far back as this set of fanart for Undertale in November 2015, if not further still. It wouldn't come to be associated with SimpleFlips until July 2017, when some of his friends mentioned it in the chat during a stream of a Super Mario 64 ROM Hack, where it soon underwent its Memetic Mutation.
  • Catch Phrase: Several.
  • Complexity Addiction: Simple sure loves him some high-skill speedtech. It's an occupational hazard of being a speedrunner.
  • Couch Gag: An animated intro created by PowerPalette is used for special videos, including the various Super Mario 64 ROM hack contest compilations as of March 2019, most with some form of "bruh" involved. View the full set of animated intros here.
    • The Troll Hacks competition videos all start with SimpleFlips jumping towards a Star, only to slam into an Invisible Wall and slide off; this has its own set of variations.
    • The Retro Hacks competition videos use a title sequence with Game Boy-like palette set to the Birabuto Kingdom theme; Simple walks up to a pipe that spits out part of the title, followed by "Press Start" blinking on-screen.
    • The Creepy Pasta Hacks competition videos have Simple exploring a hallway within an abandoned mansion, only to turn and be frightened by a ghostly Mario.
    • The Linear ROM Hacks competition videos have Simple standing in front of a mysterious door, then remembering to pull out a piece of paper with the magic word that opens it. (Go on, just guess. Bet you can't.)
    • The Halloween Hacks 2019 competition videos have a shady-looking Toad ring Simple's doorbell; when he answers they let out a "BUP", prompting Simple to throw a chocolate bar at them and send them flying.
    • The Mystery Hacks competition has a magnifying glass floating in front of Simple, which he takes and looks through.
    • The SM64 Zelda ROM Hacks competition videos have Simple fall from the ceiling and land in front of a chest, which he then triumphantly opens to the expected fanfare.
  • Credits Gag: The outro song for most of his videos is the SilvaGunner mix of Nimbus Land's theme. Starting on August 6, 2017, his videos mostly use an endcard that includes a relevant quip; for ROM Hack competition videos, the end card theme and music are changed accordingly (e.g. Zelda-themed hacks have a green end card with a Gerudo Valley instrumental mix of Nimbus Land that also incorporates Gourmet Race).
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Another occupational hazard for SimpleFlips - for example, any Super Mario 64 hack that makes significant changes to certain mechanics (e.g. Mario's movement) is gonna require some adjustments on his part.
  • Disappeared Dad: Played For Laughs as one of the many in-jokes, with the viewers as his "children" wondering when he'll come home and be the father they deserve.
  • Eucatastrophe: Tends to be a recurring theme in his videos, and is possibly the trope he had in mind when he said the following after finally completing the first Star of the Green Demon Challenge:

--I can't believe it, like I was-- I was at the point of losing all hope, and I swear it's like a-- it's like a trope or some shit! The moment you lose all hope, it is actually going to happen.

  1. Roughly an hour and ~130 attempts
  2. Two hours and over 90 attempts, with 4 or 5 different incredibly painful chokes.
  3. Incidentally, he gets GBJ'd multiple times later in the video, including twice in a phallic-themed level.
  4. Specifically based on their default expression in Super Mario 64
  5. in which the player must collected 8 red coins in certain worlds while avoiding a homing 1-up Mushroom

Finally caught a SimpleFlips stream for the first time. He wasted 4 hours browsing All The Tropes and then fell asleep. What a great entertainer he is.
