He is known as an upright warrior with strong character. Striving to live a warrior's life, he searches for ways to improve himself. He feels obligated to return any kindness given to him and will work hard to repay their feelings in kind.

Gan Ning

"The Jolly Pirate"

Japanese spelling: Kannei

Age: 23
Height: 5'11" (181cm)

Formerly a pirate, he wears bells on his clothing to "warn" his enemies of their impending doom, sometimes calling himself "Gan Ning of the Bells".

Gan Ning is a man of action who doesn't like to adjust to proper etiquette. Wild and fearless, he is merely satisfied with a good brawl in battle. He's confident in his abilities and, though he seems arrogant, he has a good head on his shoulders and knows when to rely on teamwork.

Huang Gai

"The Career Veteran"

"I have yet to find anybody that can beat me, young or old alike!"

A loyal general who is famous for serving three generations of the Sun family, starting with Sun Jian to Sun Quan. His most prominent role is during the battle of Chi Bi.

Huang Gai is a muscular veteran who never loses faith in his countrymen. With stamina that belies his age, he is a bold and confident general for Wu. A devoted vassal, he is considered to be an irreplaceable member of the Wu army

Ling Tong

"The Lovable Sarcastic"

"Well, let's get things started!"

Voiced by: Taiki Matsuno (Japanese), David Lodge (English)

Born: 189
Died: 217 or 237
Japanese spelling: Ryoutou

Age: 24
Height: 6'2" (187cm)

Ling Tong is the son of Ling Cao, who in combat, died at the hands of Gan Ning. He then swore revenge against Gan Ning, even when he became a comrade in Wu. They saved each other many times and ended up befriending each other.

He is an intelligent yet sarcastic vassal of Wu. He doesn't break a sweat under pressure, which makes him seem rather relaxed compared to his comrades. However, he's easily irritated by his enemies and often wants to end battles in a quick and efficient manner. He's willing to follow any orders even if it means collaborating with Gan Ning.

  • Bishounen
  • Brilliant but Lazy - His characterization in DW6
  • Deadpan Snarker / Surfer Dude - His vocal interpretation in DW6 and DW8.
  • Embarrassing Rescue - Gan Ning shows up to save him a few times. Due to the bad blood between them that eventually mellows into Worthy Opponent status, Ling Tong absolutely hates it.
  • Fighting with Chucks - Used nunchaku in his debut for DW5, replaced them with a spear in 6 and settled on a sansetsukon (three-section rod) in 6: Special (which he has again in DW8). He gets them back in 7.
  • Ho Yay / Foe Yay - With Gan Ning
  • Lex Lang - DW5 and Warriors Orochi
  • Lightning Bruiser - He's extremely fast, to the point of being a Game Breaker in skilled hands.
  • The Resenter
  • Sam Riegel - In DW6 Empires and Warriors Orochi
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork - With Gan Ning until the end (or near the end) of his story path.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks - His nunchucks were traded in for an axe in the sixth game, which didn't go over well with some fans.
    • Justified, at least to some extent, in that not only was the axe a far inferior moveset (the nunchuck one was almost a Game Breaker, as well as just being a heck of a lot more interesting), but it was also one of the infamous cloned movesets - and the most common at that, being shared by no less than four other characters (Xu Huang, Cao Ren, Guan Ping and Lu Meng).
    • And the Fandom Rejoiced - Those who didn't rejoice when, in DW6: Special, he got a three-section staff à la Toyotomi Hideyoshi of Samurai Warriors most certainly did when he got his nunchaku back in DW7. DW8 had him retain the three section staff.
