In Lover's Oath, everyone is introduced as mortals, other than the Dragonblooded. This page will have spoilers. It is also being slowly edited to look like a cast page.

Bevel

A dark eyed, white-haired foreigner who tends to show himself as a devout young man with a good right hook.

Tropes associated with Bevel:

  • Angsty Surviving Twin - Has a grudge against the gods after his brother was murdered by a corrupt one. They Never Found the Body. The underworld chooses those on the brink of death. Take a guess what happened.
  • Chivalrous Pervert - A little forceful at times, but tries his best to be one.
  • Control Freak - Implications of him being one turn up a bit.
  • Dead Little Sister - Okay, it's a brother. But still.
  • Mind Control - One of his major talents, but passed off/used mostly as Truth Serum.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni - Bevel is the blue oni to Thief's red. Unsurprising, as the two are brothers.
  • Unusual Ears - Hails from a village where people have at least one or two chinchilla like traits. He possesses two chinchilla ears on his head, hidden by a hat.

Bryony Rue

Innocent Bringer of Woe

Leilani

  • Featureless Protagonist - Averted, as she has an age, a gender, and a culture (around 50 years old (though you don't find out how old she looks), female, and from the Hawai'ian analogy of the setting). You don't get a description of her face.
  • Kill It with Water - Her preferred martial art style when she is serious is Water Dragon Style.
  • Nakama - By the epilogue, Leilani ends up with one. She tends to help behind the scenes, but in canon, she ends up helping her friends take back Bryony's home city from the Underworld.
  • Painting the Fourth Wall - Not often, but this exchange sums it up:

Leilani was talking to someone invisible, Woe turns up.
Woe: Who are you talking to?
Leilani: Oh, the narrative.

  • Really Gets Around - Thief. Bevel. Bryony. Peace. Oh, and she serves Venus, the Maiden of Serenity. And the author would like to remind the readers that the story was inspired by bad writing in H-games. So porn happened.

Maheka Gara

  • The Big Guy - Woman, but still.
  • Dishing Out Dirt - Her elemental aspect is earth, in the form of sand. She hates it enough that she is training in Earth Dragon Style to make it look more like stone. In the Canon epilogue, she changes her motivation to becoming a Jade Aspect, an element of the Underworld.
  • Shout-Out - Her name and element are a nod to Gaara of the Desert.
  • Walk the Earth - In the canon epilogue.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer - She admits that she isn't much of a social person, and actually drags Leilani on a mission so she can do the talking.

Mnemon Eustathios

Soft Spoken Words of Peace

  • Ironic Nickname - A Chosen of Battles named this? The Pattern Spiders are a bitch.
  • Kick the Dog - Elbowing Leilani when she tried giving him a hug.
  • A Man Is Not a Virgin - Subverted. The oldest character in the game, and Leilani only finds out he was one after she seduces him in the canon arc.
  • Martial Arts and Crafts - While Leilani, Thief, Bevel, and Gara all know some, Peace has mastered two Martial Styles. Fire and Earth Dragon Style.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old - Peace has been Exalted longer than any of the other characters, at around ninety years. Exalted have long lives.
  • Spirited Competitor - He enjoys a good fight or argument, and in fact, engages in a friendly public debate with Bevel every so often.

Summer River

  • Black Eyes - Subversion of the whole 'not honest' thing, due to the trope below.
  • Brutal Honesty - Summer is infamous in the Guild for this. In the epilogue, she has made a creative way to handle the Guild preventing her promotion... By training the next generation.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas - Female example. Summer refused a lucrative position in another land because it would have meant she leave her mother.
  • Full Name Ultimatum - Summer's mother uses this on her at least once.
  • Kill It with Water - Summer's element is water.
  • Momma's Boy - Female example, and actually played for laughs. You'd think that a 25-year-old merchant who is empowered by the Dragon of Water wouldn't be afraid of her mortal mother.
  • Prophetic Name - Her mother couldn't have known that Summer River would Exalt with the power of the Water Dragon...
  • The Baroness - Coldhearted, only concerned about her job (and mom). There's some implications she got it from her mother.
  • Theme Naming - Summer's mother is Winter Silk.

Tam Glau

Thief

  • Anti-Villain - He is a servant of the Underworld who wants to bring down the world into nothingness. He has no regrets about it. Yet the first meeting with Leilani, he gives her the directions to where she needs to go, and gives her a map, and in another scene is trying to take care of a little boy who doesn't realize he is dead yet.
  • Eat the Evidence - Spoilered because Leilani wasn't aware that was what happened, though Word of God confirmed it. He ended up stopping an godblooded assassin from attacking Leilani... And then ate the body.
  • Evil Albino - A subversion, though he is actually an albino. He isn't a monster, though he is a villain of sorts. Word of God also states he dyes his hair black as a habit from before becoming a deathknight, and takes a lot of care to not be out in the sun uncovered because of his condition. He is also nicer than his brother.
  • Funetik Aksent - In Riverspeak, he sounds vaguely German. He drops the accent in Old Realm.
  • Necessarily Evil - Tying in with below, he honestly thinks he has to do what he does to keep what happened to him from happening to others.
  • Rage Against the Heavens - Full title: The Redhanded Thief Stealing the Celestial Flame, and has a liking for godflesh. Reason being he was almost killed by a corrupt god, only saved by becoming a deathknight.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni - Thief is the red one to Bevel's blue. They even dress in the right colors! (And well, there's the fact that Thief is the Red Handed Thief...
  • That Man Is Dead - Deathknights sell their name to the Underworld on becoming a deathknight. He actually denies his name when his brother addresses him as it.
  • Too Kinky to Torture - His preferred martial arts style involves taking pain, and dishing it right back out. It has had... some effects on his sexual preferences.
  • Walk the Earth - Walks alongside Gara in the epilogue, after corrupting her to the cause of the Underworld.
