Hatsune "Hats" Rondo

"Hence the average life of Hatsune Rondo ceased to be average...Just like that."

Our protagonist. Hatsune becomes the latest addition to the Irregulars after being mysteriously thrown back in time. She has a lot of personal demons regarding her mother and her past to say the least, but tries not to let them interfere with her life (A task that begins to become increasingly difficult as the story progresses). Hatsune is overall a smart and relatively friendly girl, with a strong determination to help her friends in everything they do. Admittedly she often takes the "act, don't think" approach to things and ends up messing up or hurting someones feelings as a result, but she is always quick to learn the error of her ways.

• Bifauxnen: Especially in the later volumes
• Bookworm: It's All There in the Manual, as her character description claims she taught herself to read. Her school bag also contains quite a few novels. Also when Morris asks her if she reads, she claims only to "dabble", while in the author comment it is stated that this is a complete and utter lie.
• But Not Too Foreign: Hatsune comes from a British father and a Japanese mother, was raised in Japan all her life, but seems to prefer British culture.

• Disappeared Dad: Her father inexplicably left when she was 5 without so much as a goodbye.

• I Choose to Stay: She comes to this conclusion fairly quickly, because she concludes that her life at home really wasn't all that happy.

• Mood Whiplash: Hatsune does seem remarkably able to recover quickly from all the traumas she suffers throughout the series.
• Parental Neglect: Hatsune's mother stopped paying attention to her around the time her dad left, meaning Hatsune had a very lonely, cold childhood.
• Purple Eyes
• Sweet Polly Oliver: Or at least she's supposed to be, Sherlock Holmes opts to turn her into one of these claiming that it will hinder her movements as an Irregular less. Most people aren't entirely fooled by her disguise. And all seem strangely accepting that there's a girl dressed as a boy gallivanting around Victorian London.
• The Woobie: Poor girl does have to deal with an awful lot, being taken away from her own time, repeated attempts on her life (and innocence), dealing with the damage her mothers neglect has done to her
  • Not to mention her incredibly traumatic back story, as it so happens the reason she was so reluctant to get intimate with Tom is that she was raped at age 14 by a boy in her class at school who also jammed a bottle into her leg while he was doing so.

Thomas "Tom" Bellman

"I mean, you have no family, I have no family...It's perfect don't you think?"

An innocent, kind hearted orphan, working during the day as a delivery boy and as a Baker Street Irregular when Sherlock needs him. Tom and Hatsune first meet when he rescues her from Jack the Ripper and takes her under his wing, the two immediately forming a very close bond.

• Black and Grey Morality: While Tom is cited by many as the nicest guy they've ever met, he's proved not above killing criminals if he believed that they hurt his loved ones. In Volume 5, Tom after seeing The Icarus Killer push Hatsune off Big Ben, gets into a fight with him that leaves him hanging off the edge. Tom, so distraught about Hats and believing that the Icarus Killer will only do more harm if allowed to live, pulls his hand away from the ledge, letting him fall into the Thames. Despite this, Tom is clearly traumatised by the act later on.

• Bishonen: Apparently he has more than a few secret admirers
• Even the Guys Want Him: And how.
• Heterosexual Life Partners: Tom and Jack met as children when Tom saved Jack from dying out in the cold, almost at the expense of his own life. Despite Jack leaving the city for a year to try and find work, Tom recognises him immediately upon seeing him again and invites him to join the Baker Street Irregulars of which he is now a member. And the rest is history!
• Oblivious to Love: Turned Up to Eleven with Constance who he thinks, despite her incredibly obvious attempts to flirt with him, is just being nice. Also to a lesser degree with Hatsune, which is odd because she's nowhere near as up front with her feelings.
  • This appears to be selective though (Completely acknowledged by the author) as it takes him remarkably little time to work out that Jack is also in love with him when the situation confronts him
  • Word of God states that he may actually be Obfuscating Stupidity.
• Parental Abandonment: The only memory he has of his mother is her holding him, crying and apologising. And there's no mention of his parents.
  • It's later revealed that Sherlock and Irene are actually his parents but chose not to raise him as their son.
• Stepford Smiler: Behind his Pollyanna facade, it's revealed that Tom is actually incredibly lonely and insecure.

Jack Terry

"Way I see it, women are good for nothing! You'll just get in the way!

Tom's best friend and fellow member of the Baker Street Irregulars, who is fiery tempered and headstrong, and taken an dislike to Hatsune simply due to her being a woman. While irrational, slightly insecure and occasionally violent, he is very strongly devoted to Tom and secretly has a heart of gold.

• Abusive Parents: Jack's mother was a prostitute who repeatedly beat him when he was a child, and he was completely unaware who his father was or even what his own name was.
• Accidental Murder: He ended up killing his own mother by throwing an oil lamp at her in self defence and then knocking over several bottles of alcohol by accident which ended up feeding the flames.
• Armoured Closet Gay
• Belligerent Sexual Tension: With both Hatsune and Jessica Queen
• Brown Eyes
• He-Man Woman Hater: Women are pretty much the worst species on the planet to him. Before Hatsune even opens her mouth, he deems her as completely useless to the Baker Street Irregulars based solely on the fact she is female, takes an instant dislike to Jessica Queen (Although he did have a little more grounds for hating her though), calls Irene Adler a whore when Tom brings her up in conversation and doesn't seem all that fond of his mother either.
• Heterosexual Life Partners: With Tom
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his tendency towards violence and general surliness, Jack is shown to have a softer side.
• Only Known by Their Nickname
• Limited Wardrobe: While all the other characters all start off wearing the same clothes day in day out, they eventually expand their wardrobes. Not Jack though, he is very rarely seen not wearing his trademark blue scarf and brown jacket.

Jessica Queen

"You know, the truth is I've never been a fair player. I prefer watching you all strain your minds in frustration, trying to comprehend my techniques.

London's second most wanted and haughty aristocrat who at first antagonises the Irregulars but allies with them later on. Jessica is outwardly arrogant and insensitive all due to her isolated upbringing, leaving her with very poor social skills. At night, she becomes the Scarlet Midnight Thief, an elaborate and daring phantom thief who never plays fair with those trying to catch her, all for her own amusement.

• Action Girl: Insanely agile, fast, a good fighter and very handy with a blade.
• Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Jack, although the belligerence is more on his part that hers.
• Black and Grey Morality: While she certainly isn't lawful by any stretch of the word, she offers to help the Irregulars tackle criminals on several occasions and declares herself their ally (Whether they like it or not).
• But for Me It Was Tuesday: The attitude she seems to have towards trying to burn the Irregulars alive, she barely even seems to be able to remember it without their prompting.
• Chaotic Neutral: Fluctuates between this and Chaotic Good.
• Classy Cat Burglar

• For the Evulz: The main reason behind her career as a thief is not for any noble cause, but completely for her own amusement and love of shiny things.
• Heel Face Revolving Door: In the Volume 1 Jessica saves Hatsune and Jack from falling to their deaths but in Volume 2 she's perfectly happy trying to burn Sherlock and the Irregulars alive inside a brewery for no good reason other than perhaps for giggles. Then in Volume 4 she's back saving their lives again and makes an effort to help them catch the Icarus Killer. She even lets the Irregulars stay in her house overnight.
• Gorgeous Period Dress: Described by the author as the "costume monkey", Jessica gets her fair share of bustles and corsets and even a parasol at one point, being a member of an aristocracy.There's even a Speshul Feeechures dedicated to putting her in different period clothing, including a Roaring Twenties flapper dress and a Regency silhouette gown.
  • Most of the outfits on that page are realarticlesof clothing from their respective time periods.
• Hot Chick with a Sword: Jessica snatches a sword from the British Museum pretty early on and since then it's become her weapon of choice
• Large Ham: Especially during her hiests, she's full of elaborate hand gestures and high pitched laughing.
• Love At First Sight: With Jack, much to her own dismay
• Near-Rape Experience: After drinking Jack under the table, Jessica takes him back to her room unconscious, kisses him and unbuttons his shirt but then stops and breaks down crying in a What Have I Become? moment
• Rich Bitch: Recently she's become more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.

Morris Redwood

"Aaah! Y'know what I like? Toffee apples! And chocolate! I like that too! And lemonade! I like lemonade and barely sweets..."

Morris is a childish and hyperactive member of the Baker Street Irregulars, who despite only being a year younger than the rest of the Irregulars, looks and acts like a very young child due to unknown "mental problems". Morris is loud, bubbly and cute although can often be a little...creepy.

• Cloudcuckoolander: He seems to operate entirely by his own Insane Troll Logic.
• Deliberately Cute Child: As demonstrated here.
• Keet
• Mood Killer: Intentionally as stated by the author. Hatsune and Tom have no hope around him.
• Mood Whiplash: His childish behaviour can go from cute and innocent to slightly worrying in the blink of an eye.
• No Indoor Voice
• Older Than They Look
• Sweet Tooth: As mentioned in his quote above, Morris just loves his sweeties.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Toffee apples, of course.

Sherlock Holmes

The man who really needs no introduction. Sherlock's main role is to act a mentor to the Baker Street Irregulars and help them when they're in over their heads.

• Bunny Ears Lawyer: Well, it is Sherlock Holmers after all.
• Cloudcuckoolander: To some extent.
• Deadpan Snarker
• Ho Yay: While Watson for the most part is pushed into the background, the bromance between Holmes and Watson is still there.
• Eccentric Mentor
• The Stoner: Nine out of ten times the Irregulars go to visit Sherlock, he's off his head on cocaine or some other unknown substance.

Irene Adler

The only woman ever to outsmart Holmes and ex Opera singer and another character from the original Sherlock Holmes books. Here it appears that her and Holmes have something of a history with one another.

• Action Girl
• Genki Girl: To an extent. She's perpetually cheeful.
• Promoted to Love Interest: Well...Whether actual love is involved seems to be a bit hard to tell at the moment.
• Team Mom: To the point that Hatsune starts to see her as more of a mother than her real one. But considering what her actual mother is like, it's not all that surprising.

Constance Paquin

A young match girl who has something of a crush on Tom and is none too subtle about it either.

• The Scrappy
• Yandere: After being rejected by Tom in Volume 5, her expression as he leaves says she's right about ready to go down this path.

Agatha Queen

Jessica Queen's haughty aristocratic mother, who doesn't have a particularly good relationship with her daughter

• Blue Blood: According to Tom, she has some vague connection to royalty keeping her so rich.

Hats: So it's not just the clever name then.

Jack the Ripper

The for the most part unseen antagonist of the series, who also needs very little introduction. All that's known is that he has a very high body count and it only looks to get higher. And for some strange reason he seems to know Hatsune's name.

• Bloody Handprint: Leaves two of them on Hatsune's face after the murder of Mary Kelly, proving to the police that Hatsune was not the murderer, as there was no blood on her own hands.
• Hidden Agenda Villain: The Irregulars know absolutely nothing about him, his only motivation so far seems to be "kill prostitutes". But judging by the disturbing fact that he seems to know Hatsune's name and didn't kill her when she walked in on him murdering Mary Kelly he clearly is up to something larger. It's hard to tell at this point if he's even actively antagonising the Irregulars.
• Mind Rape: Hatsune, in an attempt to reach Mary Kelly before Jack can murder her, is too late and catches him in the act. He simply says hello to her and leaves completely traumatising Hatsune to the point of not being able to speak or remember the incident.
  • He also managed to make Hatsune have a mini identity crisis, just by brushing past her.
• Overdrawn At the Blood Bank: A staple of his murders.

Kyoko Okada

Hatsune's best friend from the present day. Appears to be something of a geek.
