MorphE/Characters
The Seedlings
Robert William “Billy” Thatcher is an American Chess International Grandmaster, successful writer and the star of his own A&E TV show TV show "Pawnography". He is best known for his erratic and violent behavior on and off camera. In fall he's challenging the current world champion Nakahara for his title. One of the greatest living chess players and an insensitive asshole, or a lovable rogue. All can agree though that Billy always leaves an impression. On TV he's a person you love to hate and in real life he's a person you hate to love.
- Blessed with Suck: Billy already had everything he wanted. Being a mage is a huge inconvenience.
- The Chessmaster: Both literally and figuratively. Though in tactics he tends to play more speed chess.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome
- Deadpan Snarker
- Drink Order: Ginger ale and fountains of it.
- Flipping the Table: Billy has chosen this method of resigning on more than a few occasions.
- Good Is Not Nice
- Hot-Blooded
- I Just Want to Be Normal
- Insufferable Genius
- It's All About Me: After a televised tantrum, images and sound bites of Billy screaming "I'M more important!" Reached meme status online.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Knight in Sour Armor
- Mangst: Even Billy Fucking Thatcher has to deal with grief somehow.
- Samaritan Syndrome
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Billy would like nothing more than to abandon the party and go back to a life of affluence and stardom. But he can't shake that last bit of human decency...
- Trade Your Passion for Glory: Billy certainly has enough drive and obsession to gun for the world chess championship but one can argue that reality TV and outrageous public scenes with Charlie Sheen and Kenneth Branagh do not rank high on a chess player's priorities.
- Self-Made Man: And lord help you if you imply he owes any of his success to anyone, least of all his parents.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: Billy wears suits and his trademark argyle. Never try to convince him that it isn't cool.
- Smart People Play Chess: Naturally.
- What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?: Argyle is the height of cool, right?
Tyler Dawn is a very mixed up young man. Given his affinity for escapism, he is embracing the awakened world with open arms. Unreliable, powerful and gullible.
- Amnesiac Dissonance
- Ascended Fanboy: He used to read fantasy stories. Now he's in one.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Bored of his hundrum life, Tyler never stopped to think about how horrible it might actually be to be a mage.
- Contemplate Our Navels: Ad infinitum.
- Fiery Redhead
- Genre Savvy: Tyler, being a fantasy nerd, is quickest to catch onto the ways of the magical world. Turns out a lot of what he read was right after all!
- Green Eyed Red Head
- Horrible Judge of Character
- I Just Want to Be Special: In contrast with Billy.
- I Hate Past Me: Tyler's journal reads like this sometimes.
- Talks Like a Simile: A failed writer, Tyler can't help but tart up his descriptions.
Asia is a very analytical, observant, quiet and introvert person. She spent her early childhood in a cult and found herself rescued by reporter/journalist Ken Ellis, who showed her a world outside of the farm she grew up on. She is a very literal person, taking everything at face-value. She doesn't have many friends but she is not unkind. She is, in fact, a very enthusiastic helper, attentive, disciplined, and hard-working. She has a hard time relating to people and understanding the finer points of emotional intimacy. Asia has awakened as a Mastigos mage and as such, specializes in mind magic. This will prove useful should she decide to return to journalism and investigation.
- Apologetic Attacker: Asia's earliest battles. She's getting better.
- A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Sometimes Asia's telepathy backfires.
- Badass and Child Duo: How Ken and Asia spent quite a bit of her childhood.
- Bollywood Nerd: Perhaps not as severe as the straight examples but this certainly applies.
- Borrowed Catchphrase: Asia picked up a lot of her Verbal Tics from Ken. "Understood" as a catch phrase is just one of them.
- Brutal Honesty: She had to develop the ability to lie during the campaign. She is still learning when not to be so blunt about the truth.
- Cannot Tell a Joke
- Catch Phrase: "Understood." Even/especially when she doesn't.
- The Comically Serious
- Daddy's Girl: To her guardian, Ken.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Raised from infancy in a cult.
- Emotionless Girl: Asia does, in fact, have emotions, a point that The Man with Black Eyes has decided is very important. But after years in the cult and an upbringing by the emotionally controlled Ken, she doesn't show it very well.
- Even the Girls Want Her
- Exposition Beam: Another one of Asia's abilities.
- Hidden Depths: Asia seems so simple and stoic on the surface, but once you get to know her...
- Kuudere: Type 2, mostly due to her lack of social skills.
- Last-Name Basis: She prefers to refer to people by an honorific and last name, rather than using first names.
- Literal-Minded: More than anyone who's not a robot should be.
- Mind Over Manners: Asia is a poster-child for this trope.
- Morality Chain: Asia's refusal to break laws and moral code.
- No Social Skills
- Oblivious to Love: Adrestia's advances went way over her head, until things were made very, very obvious.
- The Quiet One
- The Spock
- The Stoic
Curio
- Adorkable
- Casting a Shadow: Curio's earliest use of his Moros skills.
- Catch Phrase: "Gaaaaaaaay."
- Constantly Curious: He chose his name to sound like a curio cabinet, ignoring the Unfortunate Implications of the scars carved into his forehead.
- Kid Hero: He was the only under-age member of the party until he aged to his 30's in Arcadia
Adrestia
- Action Girl: Early on, when practicing magical combat with the other Seedlings, Adrestia would often eschew her powers in favor of her fists. And she would usually still win.
- Butch Lesbian
- Combat Medic: Physically the strongest member of the team AND our life mage.
- Dumb Muscle: Though it's more ignorance than stupidity, having received very little in the way of a formal education.
- Les Yay: Her crush on Asia.
- Mama Bear
