Blowing a Raspberry

When a character blows a raspberry at someone. Also called "giving someone the raspberry." Also known as the Bronx Cheer, it is a mild taunting gesture that tends to signify immaturity in the user. Done by sticking one's tongue out, and usually placing each hand spread-fingered and thumb-in at the ears, and then blowing, making a "pthththt" sound. The origin of the term is Cockney rhyming: "fart" -> "raspberry tart".

If they also pull their eyelid down, then it's not this trope, it's Eyelid-Pull Taunt.

• Frieza does this in an episode of Dragon Ball Z
• Tubby did this after Lulu flicks him on the nose in Episode 8 of the Little Lulu anime.

Film

• |Toy Story 3: Big Baby does this to Lotso after he throws him into the dumpster and turns on him.
• On a Missing Trailer Scene from Up, Carl blows a raspberry at the nursing home orderlies as his house floats away. In the final scene, he just says, "I'll send you a postcard from Paradise Falls."
• The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl: One of the students does this to prove that Max's story sucks and is just made up (though it really isn't).
• The Powerpuff Girls Movie: Buttercup does this to Blossom.
• Monsters, Inc.: Boo blows a raspberry at Randall, whose door got destroyed by Sulley and Mike so he couldn't come back.
• In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, this is the extent of SpongeBob telling off Mr. Krabs for thinking he's still a kid.
• In The Great Mouse Detective, Rattigan's appearance in the Royal Palace elicits Dramatic Gasps from the crowd, except one little kid, who just razzes him.
• Mrs. White in Clue gives a very demure and ladylike one to Wadsworth.
• The Adventures Of Elmo In Grouchland features the Queen of Trash demanding 100 of these raspberries in a set time.
• Chicken Little. At one point in Mutton Class, Abby razzes Foxy, who insulted Abby by calling her "Ugly Duckling."
• Flushed Away. During the chase scene, Rita razzes The Toad's henchrats (and also slaps her butt at them) in the Jammy Dodger.
• The Lion King. During the song "I Can't Wait to be King," when Young Simba is singing to Zazu, Young Nala is blowing a raspberry behind him.
  • In the sequel, Simba's daughter, Kiara, razzes the crocodiles after she and Kovu escape them.
• In Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown, one of the camp bullies razzes Charlie Brown and the gang a few times.
• Parodied in Spaceballs: The villain exclaims, "There is only one man, who would dare give me the raspberry! Lone Starr!" after the hero has jammed the villain's spaceship's radar with... jam... raspberry flavored jam.
• Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The French knight does this to King Arthur and his knights each time he meets them.
• In the original version of Bedazzled, blowing a raspberry ended the Devil's current fulfilled wish. And eventually it didn't, leaving Stanley turned into a nun and constantly blowing raspberries in a convent.
• In The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, Gollum blows a raspberry in response to Sam telling him about cooked food and "taters."
• The title seal from the movie Andre is quite fond of doing this.
• Surf's Up: Cody does this to his older brother Glen after Glen insults his surfing talents. Mrs. Maverick and Glen then chide Cody for doing this as it's very disrespectful.

• Black the horse from Gunfighter's Ride does this constantly.
• Peeves in Harry Potter is shown doing this to various authority figures, to accent his immaturity and trickster nature.

Live Action TV

• Archie Bunker had this as his Catch Phrase.
• Lily Tomlin's little girl character, Edith Ann, had it as part of her Catch Phrase: "And that's the truth. *pthbt*"
• Dinosaurs. Baby Sinclair does this occasionally.
• Monty Python's Flying Circus. A psychiatrist gets a lecture from a man dressed like Napoleon Bonaparte about speaking predictably. When the psychiatrist does it again, the man blows a raspberry. Watch it here, 0:55-1:55.
• Mork and Mindy once featured a character from Mork's planet whose name was pronounced by blowing a raspberry.
• Sesame Street. Baby Natasha is known for her fondness of blowing raspberries.
• In the Smosh episode "If Movies Were Real," Anthony, playing Carl Fredricksen in a spoof of Up, blows a raspberry before the house flies into the air (even though it doesn't).
• In The Two Ronnies serial The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town, the Prime Minister and the leaders of the Commonwealth are meeting to discuss the threat of the Phantom. Who drops in uninvited, and blows a raspberry at them that's powerful enough to make the Queen's portrait blush and bring the chandelier down.
• On Hee Haw, they throw one in at the end of the "Where O Where Are You Tonight" song.

Music

• "Der Fuehrers Face" uses it after each "HEIL!"
  • The BBC banned British artists from performing "Der Fuhrer's Face" live because they considered raspberry blowing obscene. The solution: kazoos.
• P!nk does this at the end of her song "So What."
• Spike Milligan first performed "The Raspberry Song" in one of his Q series in the early 70s. In 1978, he and The Goons recorded a slightly rewritten version, on what turned out to be their last ever reunion.
• This happens in Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" throughout the song.
• A vital component of "The Old Sow Song", especially Anna Russell's version.
• Sam The Sham's recording of "I Couldn't Spell !!☆@!"
• Occurs during the Throw It In intro of The Hombres' "Let It All Hang Out".

Newspaper Comics

• Calvin and Hobbes at one point get into a long argument which just degenerates into the two of them blowing raspberries at each other.
• Bill the Cat does this in Bloom County, but it's more of a Verbal Tic than meant for rudeness (although sometimes it's meant that way).

Video Games

• In Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 4: The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood, Defendant Guybrush does this when Defense Attorney Guybrush tries asking him(self), "What's your impression of the plaintiff's case?"

Web Comics

• Gunnerkrigg Court had Red perform the most protracted version of this for the sake of her friend Blue (these two used to demonstrate they deserve each other).

Western Animation

• Veggie Tales. The French Peas blow raspberries sometimes.
  • In The Lord of the Rings parody, they go through the Razzberry Forest, inhabited by ent spoofs. It turns out to be aptly named.
• SpongeBob SquarePants goes to Rock Bottom, where everyone speaks in raspberries. When he asks for directions, a Rock Bottomite can't understand his "accent" until SpongeBob starts adding raspberries between words.
• In the Family Guy episode "Hell Comes to Quahog" Peter blows a raspberry every time Meg's name is mentioned, prompting Chris to then repeat Meg's name over and over again until Lois tells him to stop.
• Mickey Mouse used to do this all the time in his early cartoons, all the way back to Steamboat Willie.
• Jade from Jackie Chan Adventures does this on occasion. And in the episode where she is infused with the powers of the 12 talismans, her raspberries temporary contain the dragon blast power.
• Screwy Squirrel does this over a pay phone in the Tex Avery short "Screwball Squirrel" when trying to get a dog that only chases birds angry enough to chase him.
• In An American Tail Fievel blows one at the cat gang he's being chased by when he thinks he's escaped. However, they end up catching him.
• Kim Possible. Sometimes Rufus blows raspberries.
• The Powerpuff Girls. Grubber of the Gangreen Gang does this when he talks. The Powerpuff Girls and many other characters (such as Princess Morbucks) also blow raspberries at one point in episodes.
• Kung Fu Panda Holiday. Po blows a raspberry at one point when talking to Shifu.
• The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. In the episode "Birth of a Salesman," Cindy razzes Jimmy after saying that Libby will win at being the best salesman.
• Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. The Joker after the following statement:

Adios, Brucie. I guess I should salute you as a worthy adversary and all that, but the truth is I really did hate your guts.

• In one episode of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, Rainbow Dash blows one at Applejack.
  • Diamond Tiara blows one at the Cutie Mark Crusaders after she gets her comeuppance in Ponyville Confidential.

Real Life

• The Golden Raspberry Award is named after this.
