Winx Club/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Adaptation Displacement: For some, the 4kids and Nickelodeon versions.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: While it's clear the audience isn't supposed to like her, it's unclear if Krystal is Innocently Insensitive or if she was subtly trying to steal Helia from Flora and only stopped once Helia made it clear he loved Flora?
    • Mirta and Lucy's friendship. Was it a good one at the beginning but was broken by things out of their control or was it always a toxic cesspool and the events of the show just brought that to life? The 4kids dub seem to point to the latter.
    • Is Miele adopted or does she just take more after her father and her red hair is from someone else's genes in the family?
  • Anvilicious: The "save the rainforest" mini arc in Season 4
    • Happens a lot in the comics too. One issue dealt with drugs.
  • Badass Decay: Chimera and Valtor.
  • Base Breaker: Bloom. Either love her for her qualities or hate her for being a Mary Sue. Differently said, loved by Target Audience and hated by everyone else.
  • Broken Base: 4Kids vs Cinelume vs Nick vs Dubbing Brothers?
    • Daphne coming back to life. Some hate it while others are glad she's back.
    • Who is to blame for the Diaspro vs. Bloom fight? Bloom, for recklessly charging into a fight without knowing properly who she was fighting, or Sky, for not telling Bloom (or Diaspro) in the first place?
    • Aisha vs. Layla. There's also the fact some dubs made Layla a nickname once her original name being Aisha became more widespread making it even more confusing.
    • Speaking of her, who is Aisha's one true love? Nabu? Roy? Nex? Musa?
    • Musa/Riven? Dysfunctional couple who needed to break up sooner or a realistically flawed couple among the fairy-tale ones and do actually care about each other?
  • Canon Sue: Bloom. Despite being the main character and getting more focus than the other girls in every season, Bloom doesn't turn into this until season three, when she gets much more screen time than in the previous seasons (Shafting both everyone else and every new plot element introduced), spends a lot of that time whining about her birth parents (that she never met) and home world (ditto) every five seconds. Not to mention that she becomes ridiculously powerful, to the point that Bloom in her normal outfit is more powerful than the other girls in Enchantix. This gets even worse in The Movie.
  • Common Knowledge: Stella is the fairy of the sun and the moon, not just the sun. Though, she rarely uses her moon attacks/abilities and the Nick dub calls her the 'Fairy of the Shining Sun', so not knowing that is somewhat justified.
  • Complete Monster: The Wizards of the Black Circle. Particularly their leader, Ogron.
  • Designated Hero: Bloom. As explained below, she solely blamed Diaspro for ruining her relationship with Sky, despite that 1) Diaspro had no idea who she was, 2) Bloom randomly decided she was one of the Trix in disguise and attacked her and 3) Sky was essentially cheating on Diaspro with Bloom, meaning he deceived two people, not just one. Sky is also never held accountable for it.
  • Designated Villain: The witches of Cloudtower are considered evil and malicious by most of the fairies, but they're more on the level of the average "mean schoolgirl" and some of them even seem to be rather good-hearted.
    • One name: DIASPRO. Bloom blamed her solely for ruining her relationship with Sky, despite being Sky's fault for not telling Bloom about Diaspro (or about his real identity for that matter). The writers made her a Jerkass Rich Bitch so the viewers wouldn't like her. It really gets bad when they make her flat-out villainous in Season 3 and onward, even though her last appearance in Season 2 had her getting over Sky and making a Heel-Face Turn! Thus she is literally only a villain on the whim of the writers.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Diaspro is surprisingly popular among fans, despite the writers' best efforts to show how much of a Rich Bitch she is. However, the fact that she was made a Designated Villain in the love triangle between Bloom, Sky and her, plus many people's dislike of Bloom probably helped this.
    • The Trix get this from some as well.
  • Ear Worm: The "Believix" transformation music takes this to new levels.
    • In the game Quest for the Codex, you will have at least one of the tunes burned into your head for some time.
    • The song for 'Magic Charmix' has been well-received.
    • Any of the Winx's transformation can be this. 'Magic Winx/Enchantix (most classic and movie)/Sirenix' are also well-liked.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Brandon, Riven, Helia, Nabu for the guys.
    • Stormy, from the Trix
    • Mirta for being The Woobie, making a Heroic Sacrifice etc.
    • Diaspro and Chimera, count too, at least in their first appearance, when they really looked threatening.
  • Evil Is Sexy: The Trix, Valtor, Dark Bloom and the Fairy Hunters.
  • Family-Unfriendly Aesop: Many people felt that Bloom calling Mike and Vanessa by their first names instead of "Dad" and "Mom" gave the message that adoptive parents will never replace biological ones, regardless of how much they love you.
    • Both English show dubs are a lot better this by having Bloom call Oritel and Miriam her birth parents and she calls Mike and Vanessa Mom and Dad, but the movie is where this trope is terrible. She calls her biological parents her "real" ones, and at the ball at the finale, she calls Oritel, the father she's never known, "Dad", and when he surprises Bloom by inviting her adoptive parents to the party, she runs towards them while calling them by their first names. This literally happens within ten seconds of each other.
      • Oritel also later cuts in the reunion to steal a dance from Bloom, because it's a tradition for the father to dance with his daughter. He does this while Mike is standing right there, and nobody says anything. Oritel is still Bloom's father, but it would have been nice to see him offer Mike a chance to dance, too.
    • Bloom and Sky's relationship. Think about it. Sky was engaged to Diaspro at the time and would have been cheating on her by courting Bloom. Not only that, he deceived Bloom as well by not telling her about his fiancée. Yeah. Teach the kiddies that this is the way to go about relationships...
    • Here's another one involving Bloom (and she's the leader??!!), though it's a rather small one. After being betrayed by Sky, Bloom decides to leave Alfea and quit being a fairy, despite that she said at the beginning that it was her dream. Yeah, because your dreams are totally worth giving up over a guy who broke your heart. This is actually even worse in the comics, where it was explained Sky and Brandon switched places for Sky's protection and Bloom is just too darn hard-headed to listen to him. Even the vain Stella got over herself!
      • It gets worse when Bloom's friends attempt to talk her out of leaving. Their words pretty much fall on deaf ears and Bloom can't even tell them goodbye before she leaves. Apparently, Bloom doesn't think too highly of her friends.
  • Fandom Heresy: Don't say you prefer Aisha with Nex, you can get away with saying he's a good replacement though.
  • Fanon: In the rewrites, Roxy (fairy of animals) is shown being in the group for Season 6. Fanart for what her Butterflix form could have looked like is also fairly common.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Some like to pretend "Royal Heartbreak" or anything following never happened.
    • Many viewers like to pretend Nabu dying at the end of episode 24 never happened.
    • The Cosmix seasons tend to be ignored (or at least the redesign or retcon parts are).
    • As far as people know, Tune and Digit are Musa's and Tecna's pixies, not Cherie and Caramel. Though Digit to Caramel is slightly more understood due to Digit being turned into a boy in Pop Pixie.
    • Some people would rather believe the show ended after Season 3 (though some extend that to Season 4 and/or Season 5).
    • Even fans of the later seasons would like to ignore the girl's being switched back to being teens.
    • Riven and Musa breaking up for their supporters.
    • Even hardcore Cinelume dub supporters ignore 'Miss Magix' due that scene where a girl's hair is turned poofy by accident and it's seen a bad thing. Many fans ignore the episode entirely or watch the 4kids dub of it where the girl already was curly and the accident was made to her voice.
  • First Installment Wins: The first season is the best received and arguably the most memorable, and the others are criticized for in creating good Plots and characters and then waste them, having anti-climatic resolutions, the Power Ups and FrillyUpgrades caused the main characters lose the beauty their simplicity etc.
  • Foe Yay: Darcy and Musa in season 1, due to the fact that they both like Riven (albeit for different reasons).
    • Bloom/Diaspro for similar reasons.
    • There's also Bloom with both Darkar and Valtor. The former was canonized in the 4kids dub.
  • Fridge Brilliance: At least in the Nick Dub, it makes sense why Charmix was skipped over. Charmix apparently already exist in the form of the girls' base transformation, Magic Charmix.
    • Admittedly this is coming with someone who didn't like Stella and Brandon having flirt competitions, but I think Stella being upset about Mitzi flirting with Brandon makes sense. The fourth season is about growing up from previous seasons, what's to say Stella couldn't have simply gotten over/stopped liking the 'flirting competitions' overtime?
  • Fridge Logic: If to access the Believix powers you need to get some one to believe in magic, then why doesn't Stella have hers before Season Four as she did this for Bloom, Mike and Vanessa?
    • Well, it's implied that Mike and Vanessa already believed in magic, but said nothing about it. As for Bloom, she already held a belief in magic and fairies from her childhood. It seems to gain Believix, you have to make someone believe in magic if they have no belief in it whatsoever.
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment - In the first season's finale, Lucy insults Alfea, and Mirta defends it. 4kids changes it to have Lucy making fun of Mirta, and Mirta saying she is transfering to Alfea. While this appears to be a plothole for the second season, this actually happens in the third season, although Mirta actually becomes a good fairy, instead of a "witch on campus".
  • Hate Dumb: On YouTube, there are quite a few "Sailor Moon vs Winx Club" videos. Not only does Sailor Moon win in every single one, but any viewer who thinks Winx Club should've won or even remotely likes it is immediately bashed.
    • The producer actually said that he based this show on Sailor Moon just because there weren't any "Girl Shows" on TV, which means it wasn't his intention to make it good or bad, just a show for girls. This only made things worse because things like Nostalgia Filter and the fact Sailor Moon has more mature themes, makes this look like he was making fun of fans for liking Sailor Moon (Fan Interpretation). Now the fans are "defending" it by saying that the Sailor Scouts would beat Winx's asses.
    • Roxy. She was being hated on before season four even began and there are some people who hate her for no reason other than that she exists.
  • He's Just Hiding: Since Morgana promised to look after Nabu until he "wakes up", some are now starting to think that he might not be dead after all. Also, Lord Darkar and Valtor seem to get this treatment in fanfiction.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In season three Stella and Bloom try on dresses that look like a Shout-Out to Jem. Then late in season four the girls form their own rock band. Coincidence?
  • Ho Yay: In Season 2: episode 13 Amore, the pixie of love, turned two of the thugs attacking Layla/Aisha and Musa gay.)
  • It Was His Sled: Bloom isn't Mike and Vanessa's actual daughter. Of course, 4kids made this worse by having Bloom already know that and is simply questioning the circumstances.
    • Nabu dies in Season 4.
    • Musa and Riven get back together in Season 8.
  • Les Yay: Moreso in the comics than the cartoon, as shown in this panel of Stella looking pretty happy when tickling Bloom and trying to prove she's not fat.
    • Flora is also hellbent on defending Pumpkin!Mirta and is ecstatic after turning her back.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Valtor tries to be one.
  • Misblamed: Not everyone realizes there have been two English dubs of the show, so 4Kids sometimes gets blamed for faults in Cinélume's dub.
    • Now with Nick airing yet another English dub, Nick is being criticized for reverting some of 4Kids (what some people believe to be the original) edits and changes. Nick is/was also blamed for the one hour specials removing and changing some plot elements when it is actually the creator himself who directed the production of them.
  • Moe: Flora, for being shy.
    • Mirta as well.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Not only Ogron ultimately causes Nabu's death, he also steals the power that could revive him and wastes it, gloating to the poor Layla. No wonder she decides to join Nebula, still bent for revenge.
  • Narm: Nick's attempt at making "dragon sound effects" during Bloom's first Enchantix transformation is hilariously bad.
    • The ones for her "Charmix" transformation weren't too good either.
  • Narm Charm: Nabu's dead body glows and floats a few inches off the ground. It's kinda weird, but it doesn't ruin the feel of the scene.
  • Non Sequitur Scene: The part in season 3 episode 25 where Bloom is randomly attacked by a mud monster during the fight against Valtor.
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: Iginio Straffi for a while. However in regards to the changes the Nick dub and later seasons made, this has faded overtime.
    • Though some were filling to apply this trope to him in regards to the much hated FATE: The Winx Saga.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Season 4 has actually two: Musa and Riven fighting and breaking up again, and the Brandon-Stella-Mitzi Love Triangle.
  • Sailor Earth: It's very easy to put an OC in and have them go on adventures with the main group.
  • Ship Mates: Except for Bloom/Sky, Musa/Riven, Aisha/Nabu/Nex, most fans are content shipping Stella/Brandon, Flora/Helia, and Tecna/Timmy.
    • A negative example. Valtor/Bloom goes hand in hand with Sky/Diaspro. The negative part comes since it's mostly just to get Sky out the way.
  • The Scrappy: Roxy. Many felt the 7th fairy wasn't necessary. However, she is supposed to be in season 5, so her popularity may have gotten on the rise.
    • Lord Darkar, for being Obviously Evil, stereotypical villain.
    • Valtor, for being a Villain Sue and then deteriorating rapidly.
    • In season 4, most fans really wanted Mitzi to just disappear already.
    • Krystal, for getting in the way of Helia/Flora. Also, compared to Diaspro, the audience is given less reason to potentially sympathize with her. Bonus points for Flora as well as Flora/Helia in general being less hated than Bloom and Bloom/Sky.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: Love & Pet
    • Also, the prison of Lightrock tries and reforms the inmates by overexposing them to cuteness. The only thing that can actually terrify the Trix is being brought back there...
  • Tear Jerker: Nabu's death, the memory montage at the beginning of the next episode (with Riven crying Manly Tears), and another montage in the season finale.
    • Also, in the episode where the girls retrieve the water stars in season 3. Stella, Tecna and Musa must make sacrifices so they can obtain them. Stella gives up her beauty and Tecna gives up her emotion, but the real tear jerker is Musa's sacrifice. She's given a chance to reunite with her dead mother, but if she takes it, the girls won't obtain the water stars and the whole universe of Magix will be in danger. Of course, she chooses the water stars, but at least, she is able to talk to her mother and touch her. Before she goes, her mother also tells Musa that she's proud of her.
    • The start of the episode after Tecna earns her Enchantix, where the girls and Timmy are crying over her "death". Even more so, Riven was comforting them (telling the girls to let it out and trying to tell Timmy to accept it)! Tecna turned out to be alive a few episodes later, but it's still a tear jerker.
    • Also, the whole episode with Musa's backstory, describing how much she misses her dead mother as well as her conflicts with her father. Poor, POOR Musa.
  • The Woobie: Mirta.
    • Musa and Roxy also fit temporarily. Musa fit in the episode The Show Must Go On, where her father threatens to transfer her to another school if she performs in a concert just because he can't move on from Musa's mother's death (Musa has moved on). Roxy fit during the first few episodes of season four because she had no choice in whether to become a fairy or not. To sum it up, her choices were either become a fairy or be captured/killed.
    • Jerkass Woobie: Diaspro. Can you really blame her for her Face-Heel Turn given the circumstances? The poor girl got treated like shit by Bloom and Sky.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: Some of the responses to the Nickelodeon Winx Club specials created by RAI and the trailer for season five have been targeted as this.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: In spades. Many people think that they could have done a lot more with characters like Chimera, Diaspro, Mirta and Nabu.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Season three is made of this.
    • Some people thought that Mitzi becoming a dark fairy could have been much better, and ended too quickly.
  • Unfortunate Implications: In the Cinelume dub of Miss Magix, the scene makes a point to compliment Stella's (a white girl) beautiful straight hair. Then there's an incident where a black girl turns her hair into an afro and it's seen as a bad thing. Of course, this is a massive Values Dissonance and many fans either ignore the episode or turn to the 4kids dub, where the girl's hair was an afro to begin with and the incident was regarding her voice.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While Bloom also gets this, Sky deserves a special mention. He doesn't tell Bloom he's a prince or at least engaged. He doesn't tell Diaspro he is in love with another girl. Both of them have to find out the hard way about his lies. While he does have a good excuse in the Rai English dub not to tell Bloom at least, this gets worse in 4kids where he apparently just wanted to be a normal guy which is an awful reason to do that (something Musa lampshades). It's debatably even more worse in the Nick dub, since the whole Brandon and Sky switch lives plot line was completely taken out of the special, thus making Sky look even sketchier since he technically doesn't have an excuse to not tell her.
  • Villain Decay: The Trix and later Valtor.
  • Villain Sue: Valtor in the first half of season three. He gets worse.
