Redhead in Green

Basically, this is when the main outfit of a redhead or auburn-haired character is green. This trope can sometimes be used to hint that somebody is of Irish descent, but sometimes, illustrators use it as a traditional pair of complementary colors or because they just feel like it. Bonus points if the character in question has nature-themed abilities.

The trope comes from a long-standing tradition among fashionistas that red hair contrasts best against green or blue attire, which is one reason redheads are encouraged to wear green to make a striking visual appearance. The color they encourage redheads never to wear is pink because the colors clash too much.

Anime & Manga

• Kyou Ryu. The trope fits so well, it's almost surprising Elle didn't throw a net over her to steal her Pot o' Gold.
• Brief from Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt.

Comic Books

• Popular interpretation of the Batman villain Poison Ivy.
  • Also, sometimes, The Riddler. The hair varies, but it frequently comes back to red to match that green Riddler suit.
• Once the X-Men started putting on individual costumes instead of blue and yellow uniforms, Jean Grey put on green (usually complemented by yellow/gold) most of the time.
  • Banshee and Siryn wear costumes that combine green with yellow and black. Auburn-haired Rogue is also usually dressed at least partially in green.
  • Hope and Rachel Summers, both redheads (And one is a sort of descendant of Jean) wear green.
• Maxima, Superman's adversary and would-be mate, had bright red hair and a predominantly green outfit.
• Spider-Man character Jackpot wore a green and white costume with red hair (actually a wig). She later changed the costume to one with a red-black color scheme, though.
• In the Justice Society of America, redhead Cyclone's outfit is predominately green.
• Guy Gardner, resident Fiery Redhead of the Green Lantern Corps.
• Miss Martian of the Teen Titans and Young Justice has red hair, but doesn't wear green. Instead, her skin itself is green!

Film -- Animated

• Walt Disney's version of Peter Pan.
• Robin Hood is a strange example, being an anthrophormopic fox with orange fur. It still counts, though.
• Taran from The Black Cauldron.
• Ariel from The Little Mermaid has a green mermaid tail in contrast with her bright red hair. This was actually one of the reasons the directors of the film decided to make her into a redhead in the first place.
• Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
• Danny from Cats Don't Dance.
• Fiona from Shrek. The fact that, at the end of the first movie, she becomes an ogress permanently and gains green skin as well doesn't help matters.
• Hiccup and Stoick from How to Train Your Dragon.
• Princess Mérida from Brave wears a dark green dress as her main outfit. At the archery contest however, she wore an turquoise dress with gold outlines which begins to fall apart upon firing her first arrow.

Film -- Live-Action

• Layla in Sky High, fitting with her plant-control powers.
• Winifred from Hocus Pocus.

Literature

• At one point in Robert A. Heinlein's The Number of the Beast, red-headed twin sisters Laz and Lor have donned green evening gowns for a coming dinner; Deety (who is The Narrator at the time) comments that she can't imagine a pair of beautiful redheads like them not having an entire wardrobe full of matching green outfits.

Live-Action TV

• Maxima from Smallville.
• Team Jaime and Cara(who are both redheads) on Season 14 of The Amazing Race. Ditto for Rachel Reilly from Season 20.

Music

• One is featured on the cover of Finnish gothic metal band Poisonblack's Escapexstacy.

Video Games

• Although later incarnations of the character appear blonde or brunette, Link was this in the first two installments of The Legend of Zelda. It's made more apparent in the instruction booklets and promotional art than in the games themselves, thanks to sprite limitations.
  • The Self-Proclaimed Hero, a minor character in Phantom Hourglass, is also this—he wears clothes that look just like Link's usual green ensemble and has red hair and a beard.

• From The Simpsons: that one Irish guy who is in the "Whacking Day" episode. He's shown up a few more times since then.

Bart: People of Springfield, Whacking Day is a sham! It was started in 1924 as an excuse to beat up the Irish. Irish Guy: 'Tis true, I took many a lump, but 'twas all in good fun!

• Local nut case Izzy from Total Drama Island not only wears all green with her red locks, but also has green eyes.

• Suki of Avatar: The Last Airbender has auburn hair and blue eyes (somehow, despite being from Fantasy Isolationist Japan) and is introduced wearing the green uniform of the Kyoshi Warriors.
• Daria Morgendorffer, in her eponymous series, has reddish hair and wears a green jacket. However, in her originating series, Beavis and Butthead, she had clearly brown hair and wore different jackets, none of which were green.
• Kyle from South Park has a red Jewfro typically completely covered by his Ushanka. The hat is green, his mittens are green, his pants are a dark green, and his orange jacket has some green on it.

• Jean Grey from X-Men Evolution wears a black X-Men uniform with a green stripe down the front and back.

• Jessie Bannon in The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest is a Significant Green-Eyed Redhead who wore a green shirt in the first season as part of her Limited Wardrobe before switching to Pink Means Feminine in the second season.

Real Life

• As noted in the description, green and red are complementary colors, and many redheads are fond of green clothes and accessories as a result.
