Sonic World Adventure Rush

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Sonic World Adventure Rush is a fanfic project by Chris Gammon, who was one of the cabal of writers in The Otherworld Anthology.

The story details Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends and enemies, on their greatest adventure. The project seeks to merge all of the previous depictions of the titular characters as portrayed throughout various media. But rather than be an Adaptation Distillation, it tries to serve more as a continuation while merging everything else into a Grand Unified Timeline. It works In Theory depending on how familiar you are with the other mediums in which he appeared.

Tropes used in Sonic World Adventure Rush include:

  • Affably Evil - Dr. Eggman qualifies as this in the story. While he has done bad things in the past, the enemies resurfacing now are far more evil than he is.
  • A Day in The Life - Chapter Sixteen paints Nack the Weasel, Bean the Dynamite, and Bark the Polar Bear as the mercenary counterpart to Team Chaotix.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot - The Brotherhood of Metallix, a group of robotic duplicates of Sonic and his friends who are tired of failure and figure the best way to defeat Sonic is to not destroy him, but everything and everyone around him.
  • All There in the Manual - The story is written in a manner that assumes those that read it are familiar with the mythos enough so as to avoid pages and pages of needless exposition. Of course, a trip to the TV Tropes page can glean enough research that newcomers to the story (or to the series as a whole) have the ability to catch up.
  • Ambiguously Gay - The author implies Mephiles is this, judging by his mannerisms and dialogue in |Sonic the Hedgehog. It doesn't help that some variations of the Faust legend depict his namesake as a genderless lover to Satan.
    • Not to mention all the Alternate Character Interpretation his namesake suffers on his own, which the author plays up with Mephiles, leaving it ambiguous as to exactly what he is.
  • Ascended Extra - Nazo. He originally started out as a prototype screen shot for the then-upcoming cartoon Sonic X. His image was labeled as Nazo.jpg. ("Nazo" is Japanese for "mystery".) When the cartoon finally aired, no sign of this Nazo was seen. Some speculate it was Hyper Sonic, while other fan works have painted him as an omnicidal villain.
  • Ascended Meme - Though he's not covered in blood or speaking in demonic tongues, Tails Doll is hinted at several times to be "different" from the other Brotherhood of Metallix members... in more ways than one.
    • It could be that since his red gem is a crude prototype of artificial Chaos Emerald energy, the sheer amount of radiation it emits could drive anyone insane enough to believe Tails Doll is demonic.
    • And Sonic is seen enjoying some Captain Ersatz Pringles by the name of 'Pingas'.
  • Author Appeal - Chris sure likes his references.
  • Beach Episode - Sonic and Tails' adventure begins with the duo vacationing on the beaches of South Island, and dressed accordingly. It also somewhat serves to show that they don't suffer from Invisible Anatomy.
  • Cool Shades - Captain Westwood, a character from the comic book. He never takes them off either.
  • Continuity Nod - Since this story is supposed to be a continuation of everything that's happened prior no matter what form of media, there's lots of this. Something of a Batman the Brave And The Bold for Sonic.
  • Cultural Translation - A few of the concepts and character portrayals are taken from Sonic the Comic and the novels that inspired said series, and re imagined to fit within the story continuity.
  • Deadpan Snarker - Shadow surprisingly becomes one of these, having dropped his emotional baggage.
  • Dummied Out - Evidence of this story's "Adventure Gamebook" phase can still be found on Infinite Story [dead link].
  • Eldritch Abomination - Ibliss and Mephiles defiantly qualify, being demonic and all
    • Chip meets all the requirements of this trope, but is actually friendly and identifiable
  • Expansion Pack Past - Tails Doll's mysterious red gem was discovered to be a prototype for the technology behind Chaos Drives GUN would pioneer years later.
  • Five-Bad Band - The Brotherhood of Metallix
  • Glowing Eyelights of Undeath - Mephiles has these, being demonic and all.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom - The Brotherhood of Metallix core group has these, as well as the Sonic Robots and the Shadow Androids.
  • Hellish Pupils - Mephiles' eyes are likened to those of feral beasts or poisonous snakes, filled with an incomprehensible darkness.
  • Loads and Loads of Characters
  • Mad Scientist - Dr. Kai Narasu from the comics, though he's less scatterbrained than most, and actually quite efficient when not under pressure.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization - Captain Westwood's group of anti-Sonic members actually managed to get themselves together and are actually a threat.
  • Offscreen Villain Dark Matter - Eggman is guilty of this trope. Mephiles The Dark qualifies as well, but being demonic it's Handwaved.
  • Older Than They Think - The idea of teaming Nack the Weasel with Bean and Bark was planned long before Team Hooligan appeared in the comics. Not that anyone would believe that.
  • The Psycho Rangers - The core of the Brotherhood of Metallix.
  • Recursive Adaptation - Many elements of the non-game versions of Sonic appear here.
  • Reference Overdosed - And how. See the whole list of Shout Outs.
  • Re-Power - Espio the Chameleon gained slightly more chameleon-like abilities, and his clothing can't turn invisible with him anymore.
  • Show Within a Show - Jet's adventure through Sonic and the Secret Rings draws heavily from the Arabian Nights mythos, moreso than the game. As such, the story within a story (sometimes within a story) is used to effect much like it's source did.
  • Simultaneous Arcs - Several storylines are happening at the same time, with each character having their own enemies:
    • Jet the Hawk is traveling through a Storybook Episode to find Chaos Emeralds
    • Wave the Swallow is traveling through another Storybook Episode to find Chaos Emeralds
    • Sonic the Hedgehog is investigating strange occurrences
    • Shadow the Hedgehog is tracking down the mysterious Nazo
    • Silver the Hedgehog is trying to undo the nightmarish future by finding out which of the Big Bad characters caused it
  • Storybook Episode - Jet the Hawk and Wave the Swallow experience these as they venture through prequels to the Sonic Storybook Series games. Only when they learn how and why does it all make sense.
  • Those Two Bad Guys - Scratch and Grounder, of course.
  • You Have to Believe Me - Rouge overheard Westwood conversing with his cabal about his involvement with certain situations in the past. Subverted in the fact she knows no one will believe her, so has to stop it herself.
