A Certain Magical Index/Characters/SCHOOL

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

An organization in Academy City's dark side which develops a rivalry with ITEM. Their motives are unknown, save for the fact that they are bent on negotiating with Aleister himself. As of the end of Volume 15, they are disbanded.

Teitoku Kakine

See the Level 5 Espers page.

The-girl-in-a-dress

Measure Heart

An unnamed character and a former member of SCHOOL. Her ability is "Measure Heart", the ability to regulate the distance between peoples' minds (hearts). The only remaining member of SCHOOL after Volume 15.

  • Genre Savvy: Makes it out of the battle royale alive since she refused to follow Kakine to his fight with Accelerator.
    • Also because she knows her power well and is already aware of how it can backfire.
  • Gold Digger: Somewhat. She scams money out of lonely workers by comforting them, but she stops before anything more happens between them.
  • Grenade Launcher
  • The Gunslinger
  • Nominal Importance: Averted. She's the most developed unnamed character in the novels.
  • No Name Given
  • Punch Clock Villain
  • Sword Cane: That can slice through metal.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Her ability regulates the distance between peoples' minds...
    • Heart Is an Awesome Power: ...which she can use to confuse enemies by making her distance identical to someone else's. For example, when Shiage points a gun at her, she makes her heart identical to Rikou's, causing Shiage to hesitate pulling the trigger. Objectively, Shiage knows Measure Heart is different from Rikou, but his heart is telling him he's targeting Rikou. On the other hand, she notes that some targets will go berserk and attack you harder because seeing a loved one as an enemy results in a betrayal response. This is why she does not go with Kakine to help against Accelerator: She reasonably enough thinks he might be that type.

Chimitsu Sunazara

A replacement sniper hired by SCHOOL after their previous sniper was killed by ITEM. He is known to be a mentor figure to Stephanie Gorgeouspalace.

Banka Yobou

A member of SCHOOL who receives little development in Volume 15. He has several appearances in Railgun, in which his name and esper ability (Level 4 Psychokinesis) are revealed.

  • Green Lantern Ring: His Psychokinesis is incredibly versatile - it can be used to become invisible, dampen sound, create fire, detect odours and control electronics, among other things.
  • Iconic Item: A metallic set of goggles on his head that doesn't cover his eyes, but surrounds his head like a ring on a planet. There are several wires plugged into it. He uses it to support his powers.
  • No Name Given: He isn't named in the original novels.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: In Volume 15, his second "appearance" is when Mugino is holding his bloodstained goggles while commenting that they didn't leave empty-handed. More is revealed about him in Railgun.
  • You Have Failed Me...: Kills one of his comrades after said comrade was kidnapped by GROUP.

Rakko Yumiya

SCHOOL's sniper, who is killed before Volume 15. She makes an appearance in Railgun during the Dream Ranker arc.

  • Badass Normal: She's a Level 0, yet is considered a serious threat by Frenda (another example of this trope).
  • Cold Sniper: An unusual example - despite being described as a sniper, she deliberately gets close to her target before shooting. She also takes care to not kill her target with the first few shots, so she can savour their pain for as long as possible.
  • Doomed by Canon
  • Expy: Her appearance and mannerisms are based on Asuka Langley Sohryu.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: When on a mission, she blends into the crowd by looking and acting like a normal schoolgirl.
  • Hidden Weapons: Her gun is collapsible and hidden inside her sleeve, and shoots bullets using compressed carbon dioxide. This lets her shoot in a crowd without being noticed.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Subverted. While she thinks of herself as a loner, she's actually fairly popular at her school.
  • Posthumous Character: In Index, but not in Railgun.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: Using her incredible sense of smell, she can follow her target through a crowd without losing track of them. She can even tell what actions they're taking as they flee.
