• Executive Meddling:
  • One of the main reasons for the change in the Gundams’ design from their unusually intricate styling in season one to the more traditionally blocky types in season two was due to Sunrise complaining that the former were too difficult to animate.
  • The plot for season two was practically rewritten when Sunrise wanted there to be a movie afterwards, resulting in many of the characters (such as Graham) being marginalized.
  • Also, director Mizushima stated in an interview that the series was originally supposed to be set in Universal Century but Sunrise vetoed it, so the series was rewritten into a new 'verse, hence the similarities: Minovski particles = GN Particles; Newtypes = Innovators; Cyber Newtypes = Innovades, etc...
  • Gundam 00 as it was originally conceived wasn’t split into two seasons, with various events supposed to play out quite differently and at a different pace. Then Sunrise split the show into two 25 episode seasons...
• Fan Nickname: (Warning: unmarked spoilers below!):
  • Tieria Erde: "Vowels", for the large number of them in his name. Also "Mantrap", "Titeria", and "T-chan" for his Wholesome Crossdresser stint.
    • In the Japanese and Chinese fandom, he's also known as Zetsubou-sensei due to the share of seiyuus and an awful lot of coincidences. Eventually parodied in one of the said show's episode.
  • Lockon Stratos: "Stupid Sexy Lockon" due to his GAR-ness. Also known as "Rockon", thanks to the Engrishy habit of switching "L"s and "R"s (which has happened in both Gundam 0079 and G Gundam at the very least). Briefly "Harlockon ", thanks to the Eyepatch of Power.
    • His twin, meanwhile, became known as "Lockoff" (at least by the Japanese and Chinese fandom) as soon as he appeared in episode 9 of the first season, long before Lyle actually replaced the deceased Neil as Lockon Stratos. Eventually, "Lockon V2"/"Lockon 2.0" became popular, as well, was also nicknamed 'Lecharous Lyle' early on in Season 2 after his playful comments towards a clearly unamused Tieria Erde and stealing Feldt's first kiss (earning him a rather nasty slap for it).
  • "Prince Ali". For all his Magnificent Bastard moments, add up with his Arabic name and it's a rather popular 1001 Nights name for Arabian people... especially princes. And now that it has hit Memetic Mutation with all the Aladdin pics with Ali's face "pasted on yay" on them via Photoshop... Repeat after me, Prince Ali, Mighty Is He!
    • "An unusual hiding place, for a Prince of Darkness... Don't you think?"
  • The AEU's (alleged) ace Patrick Colasour is affectionally called "Team Patrick", for Pokémon's Terrible Trio and their shared habit of being quite soundly defeated and showing up again next episode anyway.
  • A more pragmatic example than most, Allelujah/Hallelujah is often shortened to "Al" and "Hal" by fans. Their temporary Split Personality Merge tends to be called "Doublelujah", for obvious reasons.
  • Setsuna F. Seiei, because of his past, is sometimes called "Jihad-kun". "SetLight", referring to the fact that both his English and Japanese voice actors provided their respective versions of Death Note's Light Yagami, is also popular. In Japan and China, he's apparently known as "Braindead".
  • Ribbons Almark is most commonly referred to as "Fucking Ribbons" for his Magnificent Bastardry, and "Traitor Ribbons" for his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder (frequently in the form of You Have Outlived Your Usefulness). He is also sometimes called "Bad/Evil Amuro" due sharing a seiyuu (Tohru Furuya) with Amuro Ray, the original Gundam protagonist.
  • The Japanese love to shorten things, so Graham becomes "Ham" and Alejandro becomes "Doro" (after the Japanese pronunciation).
  • Johann Trinity is nicknamed "Captain Hotpants" because of his wardrobe choice and his position as the leader of the Gundam Thrones
  • Even before his alias was revealed, fans were referring to Mr. Bushido as "Bushido Bob", thanks to his obvious Samurai stylings. His Japanese fan nickname, on the other hand, is HamMask, referencing his previous nickname before donning the mask.
  • The red-eyed, one-armed Exia from the start of season two is commonly known as "TerminExia".
  • The as-yet-unnamed black leader of the Earth Sphere Federation has been given the unofficial title of ""00bama"", a rather obvious reference to President Barack Obama.
  • The Innovators are sometimes referred to as "The Skittles Squad", for their odd hair colours.
    • Which is ironic, because some fans like to refer to Trans-Am Burst as "The Power of Skittles".
  • Col. Smirnov has HORDES of fanatically devoted Japanese fans who affectionately call him "Kuma-san" (Mr. Bear). He gets the much-less-flattering Pedo-Bear from his western fanbase, thanks to his "relationship" with Soma. The neutral version of this is "Papa Bear".
  • Don't forget Rindt being nicknamed "Swiss Chocolate Man" because of his name...
  • The Seraphim Gundam is henceforth christened the "Gundam Lagann".
    • And "Shin Musha Flag" is now the nickname for Mr. Bushido’s new mobile suit(s), the Masurao and Susanowo.
  • The A-Laws' Captain Goodman is more often than not called "Captain Fat Ass", or alternatively "Captain KFC", for reasons that should be obvious.
  • The A-Laws are sometimes called A-LOLS, and less affectionately the A-Holes.
  • Throughout both English and Japanese speaking fanbases, Regene Regetta is the butt of many "NEET" jokes due to his supposedly lazy nature; fittingly, the Japanese have dubbed him as "The Royal NEET".
  • Chinese Girl Wang Liu Mei is widely known as "China Tits" or, less affectionately, "China Bitch".
  • Gundam Throne Drei is also been called "Dreivangelion", for its stunt in episode 15 of the first season.
  • And there's also "SoMarie", a portmanteau of Soma and Marie.
  • The 00 Gundam is known among fans as "Double Exia".
    • The 00 Raiser is also known as the "Double Bro Raiser" for the friendship its pilots Setsuna F. Seiei and Saji Crossroad have ("Bro" in Japan can mean... well, beyond platonic love for added fun with the fans).
  • Marina Ismail is often called "Princess Poverty", and rules over the land of "Povertystan."
  • "Trans-GrahAm" - Whether Graham is using the Trans-Am system, or alternatively Trans-GARHam, on account of Graham's general hotbloodedness.
    • Being so hilariously obvious and memetic, the name (complete with cross out) was actually in one of the subs when the episode it first appeared in was translated.
    • By extension this also extends to his ultimately full of win quotes in SD Gundam G Generation Wars. where he is VERY notable for the aptly named "God Graham Finger." Also serves as a Crowning Moment of Awesome.
  • "Desu-Yellow" is a derisive one some fans have given Mileina Vashti because they can't stand her.
  • Quebeley Mark III - The Regnant due to its shape in Mobile Suit mode.
  • GN Particles have almost collectively known by the entire fandom as "GN Pixie Dust", both for their appearance and near-magical powers.
  • The GN Archer is the "Loli GM"
  • The Raiser Sword is often called the "Blasting Zone", for obvious reasons.
  • The army of Bring and Divine clones are known as both the "Red Ribbons Army" and "Bringivines".
  • Ribbons' mobile suit (Reborns Gundam) during the finale was actually jokingly called "Ribbons Cannon" by Furuya Tohru, Ribbons' seiyuu. Western fans generally just call it the GN Guncannon, while Asian fans call it GN Guntank.
    • Now also known as "GN Two-Face Hi-Nu Gundam", or just "GN Hi-Nu".
  • Same fans call the 00 Raiser "God Raiser" for various reasons.
  • "Bad Haro" for the purple, foul-mouthed Haro Nena Trinity kept inside the Throne Drei.
  • Power Rangers: The Meisters and their Sixth Rangers for wearing colored uniforms in the second season.
    • Blue Ranger -- Setsuna F. Seiei
    • Green Ranger -- Lockon Stratos
    • Orange Ranger -- Allelujah Haptism
    • Purple Ranger -- Tieria Erde
    • White Ranger -- Saji Crossroad
    • Red Ranger -- Soma Peries (Despite actually wearing Persimmon)
    • Graham Aker is often added in various fanworks, usually replacing Soma as the Red Ranger. If not, he's usually made as the Black Ranger.
  • The Gaga mobile suits were refered to as "baka bombs." Anyone who has seen them in action will quickly understand why.
  • "Darth Louise" or "Darth Halevy". Three guesses as to who and why.
  • "Badass Haro" - Haros in general, as they play a much more active role (piloting Dynames/Cherudim while Lockon snipes the targets) in 00 when compared to previous incarnations.
    • Red Haro became known as "GARO" after it stows away on 0 Raiser and foils Revive Revival's attempted Gundamjack by bouncing into the control port that it normally occupies and forcing the 0 Raiser to dock with 00 Gundam.
  • Billy Katagiri is known as "Billy goat"
    • "Zetsubou Billy", a nickname bestowed on Billy during season two for obvious reasons. The name also comes from the title of the second Death Note ending theme.
• Hey, It's That Voice!: The English dub, done by The Ocean Group, uses VA's from several previous Gundam series. As a result, many Gundam 00 characters sound like other well-known characters.
  • Aeolia Schenberg's voice sounds like someone who pilots Red Tree Times Faster.
    • Speaking of Aeolia, WHO would have guessed that his japanese voice is Doctor Eggman's.
    • Though the irony takes a VERY DARK turn when you realize he also did Doctor Gerald Robotnik as well.
  • In the original Japanese, it becomes rather difficult to take Tieria Erde seriously once you realize that he tends to mope around in despair quite frequently...
  • Also in the Japanese version: it is easy enough to miss, but WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK JOHANN TRINITY IS?
  • Lockon Stratos (both) is Kudou Youji, who shares a similar carefree Knight in Sour Armor personality. He also likes to smoke just like Lyle.
  • A Hilarious in Hindsight moment for Mileina Vashti voice talent, Andrea Libman. Libman currently voices Pinkie Pie, who sounds alot like Mileina if she was hyper.
    • Likewise, Cathy Weseluck. The actress who provides the calm and professional Kati Mannequin also voices Spike.
  • Aside from being related to Light, Setsuna also has the voice of Ultraman Zero. This gets especially hilarious when you match this fact with Setsuna's fate at the end of the Movie.. Another hilarious fact is Hiroshi Kamiya who voiced Tieria was also in the Ultraman Zero movie as Zero's comrade Jean-Bird/Jean-Bot. Jean-Bot is a spaceship with a very advance AI and can think and act by itself. Considering how Tieria merge with Veda.... It get even more hilarious now, with the new Ultraman Zero Gaiden having the antagonist, Jean-Killer voiced by Miyu Irino. Perhaps Jean-Killer will perform a Heel Face Turn and then combine with Zero to become Jean-Zero Riser....
    • Did I also mention that Setsuna F. Seiei is once a Pony too? Setsuna's English voice actor Brad Swalie voiced Ace, Starlight's love interest in My Little Pony Tales.
  • Soma is Fllay Allister. She is also a fashion-centric white unicorn pony and an Alicorn with a Royal Canterlot Voice.
  • Nena is Meyrin if she was extroverted and crazy.
  • Lacus is Feldt, reprising her role as the pink-haired girl with Haros. Even more surprising that she voiced a Tiddly-Wink, Starsong and lastly Diamond Tiara.
  • Christina Sierra is also Sliver Spoon. It's funnier that Sierra is Feldt's friend, and Sliver Spoon is Diamond Tiara's pal.
  • You'd think Allelujah and Louise would get along together after all those years fighting Naraku.
    • Weirdly speaking, Allelujah is also Snips while Louise is Cotton Candy, the old Cheerilee and most notably, Melody.
  • Tieria is Athrun Zala.
  • Ali is Firaeveus Carron! And Suezo! Oh, also Duo Maxwell.
• Mythology Gag: Oh boy...
  • Trans-Am, which turns the machine using it red and increases its output threefold, is clearly a reference to the infamous Gundam meme about Char Aznable's red Zaku being three times faster than the normally colored version.
  • The party scene from season two, in addition to being one long Shout-Out to Turn a Gundam, also contains a brief reference to a similar scene that occurred in the very first Gundam 0079 with Tieria being annoyed by a pair of suck-ups in a manner similar to his fellow purple-haired Bishonen Garma Zabi.
  • Ribbons' Gundams contain several gags as an Actor Allusion, since his voice actor also played Amuro Ray:
    • The 0 Gundam is the RX-78-2 Gundam, with clavicle antennae and a GN Drive tacked on. On top of that, the original version is gray, white, and red, which was how Yoshiyuki Tomino wanted the Gundam to look. Infamously, he was over-riden by the sponsors and forced to make the Gundam more colorful, resulting in the iconic tricolor look...which shows up on the Actual Combat Deployment version of the 0 Gundam.
    • The Reborns Gundam draws heavily from the Nu Gundam, but also has elements of the Guncannon, which Amuro piloted on occasion. This is taken a step further by an MSV version, Reborns Gundam Origin, which adds a Tank Mode as a nod to the Guntank. Its fangs are called "fin fangs", for no discernible reason other than to continue the gag.
    • Arguably, Ribbons going bare-knuckle in the final battle with Setsuna could be a nod to Char's Counterattack, and how Amuro and Char's duel eventually breaks down into giant robot brawling.
  • Various aspects of Gundam 00's storyline and technology are apparent analogues to elements from the Bandai-Namco-Sunrise group's own Tales (series), particularly Tales of Phantasia.
    • Seriously
  • Those that have quantum brainwaves sometimes get Newtype flashes.
  • The Gadessa and the Garazzo are fairly similar (in both tactical function and equipment) to the Mercurius and Vayeate of Gundam Wing.
    • With Garazzo's spikes and shoulder shield being yet another Zaku homage.
  • Joshua Edwards from Alaska may be a reference to Gundam SEED, where the Earth Alliance's main base in Alaska was named JOSH-A (pronounced "Joshua").
  • The Regnant in its mobile suit form bears at least passing resemblance to the Quebeley from Zeta Gundam.
  • The Gaga (with the booster attached) looks similar to the Neue Ziel from Gundam0083.
    • This gag is pushed even further when the Gagas start to kamikaze themselves, especially on battleships, since Anavel Gato died by doing that with his Neue Ziel against a Federation battleship.
  • Goodman's futile attempt to outrun a beam blast heading for the bridge of his ship is almost identical to the same attempt by Jamaican Daninghan in Zeta Gundam. They even have similar Oh Crap faces.
  • A scene in Zeta Gundam, where Yazan and two other Titans tie up a Rick Dias, is redone ad verbatim when Virtue is captured in the tenth episode of the first season.
  • Seravee's GN Bazooka II is without a doubt a shout out to Wing Zero's Twin Buster Rifle.
  • The first compilation movie adds a homage to the Deathscythe Hell Custom from Endless Waltz, courtesy of Dynames.
• Playing Against Type: Numerous seiyuus of past Gundam protagonists voiced antagonists this time around: Bad Amuro (Tohru Furuya as Ribbons Almark), Bad Judau (Kazuki Yao as Aber Rindt), Bad Loran (Romi Paku as Regene Regetta), Bad Al (Daisuke Namikawa as Michael Trinity), Bad Eledore (Keiji Fujiwara as Ali al-Saachez), Bad Sai (Tetsu Shiratori as Andrei Smirnov).
  • The English dub followed suit: Bad Yzak (Michael Adamtwaite as Ribbons Almark), Bad Duo (Scott McNeil as Ali al-Saachez), Bad Meyrin (Nicole Bouma as Nena Trinity), Bad Lunamaria (Maryke Hendrikse as Wang Liu Mei), Bad Trowa (Kirby Morrow as Billy Katagiri), and Bad (singing) Lacus/Meer (Jillian Michaels as Revive Revival).
    • On the other side of the coin the English version also inverts the trope, with voice actors of past Gundam antagonists voicing protagonists: Good Auel (Brad Swaile as Setsuna F. Seiei), Good Shani (Richard Ian Cox as H/Allelujah Haptism) Good Azrael (Andrew Francis as Lasse Aeon), and (arguably) Good Char (Michael Kopsa as Aeolia Schenberg)
  • The Filipino dub also plays it straight: Setsuna is voiced by the guy who did Ippo Makunochi, Lockon by the guy who did Reito Kanzaki, H/Allelujah by the guy who did |Youhei Sunohara, Tieria by the guy who did Yuuji Sakai.
• Relationship Voice Actor: Many seiyuus from Fullmetal Alchemist, another anime directed by Seiji Mizushima, reunite in 00. Namely, the voices of Edward Elric (Regene Regetta), Alphonse Elric (Nena Trinity), Maes Hughes (Ali al-Saachez), Scar (Bring Stability and Divine Nova), Riza Hawkeye (Shirin Bakhtiar), Jean Havoc (Alejandro Corner), Maria Ross (Revive Revival), Kain Fuery (Andrei Smirnov), Zolf Kimblee (Billy Katagiri), and Lt. Yoki (Aner Rindt).
  • In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, many seiyuus from 00 replaced some of the originals, such as Roy Mustang (Lockon Stratos), Zolf Kimblee (H/Allelujah Haptism), Envy (Kati Mannequin), Vato Falman (Patrick Colasour), Barry the Chopper (Ian Vashti), and Greed (Graham Aker). Some of the seiyuus from the original anime that were also in 00 returned but voiced different characters, such as Billy Katagiri (the original Zolf Kimblee now Jean Havoc) and Andrei Smirnov (the original Kain Fuery now Gluttony).
  • Then there's the Kingdom Hearts seiyuus: Sora (Saji Crossroad), Riku (Setsuna F. Seiei), Axel (Ali al-Saachez), and Alladin (Lockon Stratos)
  • And also from Tsubasa Chronicle: Saji Crossroad (Syaoran), Michael Trinity (Fai), Captain Barrack Zinnin (Kurogane), Setsuna F. Seiei (Kamui)
• Shout-Out: Aside from past Gundam series, there are plenty references to Square games.
  • The first time Exia used the Trans-Am System he attacked Ali al-Saachez using the "Omni-slash".
  • The Trans-Am Raiser is very similar to the Blasting Zone, and is actually nicknamed as such by fans.
  • Setsuna F. Seiei and Saji Crossroad were respectively voiced by Riku and Sora's seiyuus.
  • Keiji Fujiwara (Ali al-Saachez's seiyu) did Reno and Axel. On a side note, all three characters are red heads.
  • Setsuna and Graham Aker's rivalry mirrors that of Squall and Seifer from Final Fantasy VIII', from hair colors (Brunette, Blonde) to personalities (Ascended Fanboy, The Stoic) and scars (at least in Graham's part).
  • A fan video reveals the possibility that 00 Gundam's combination sequence with the 0 Raiser is a homage to GaoGaiGar's Final Fusion sequence.
• What Could Have Been: Gundam 00 was originally supposed to have been fifty continuous episodes like every past Gundam series and not two separate seasons. Had this remained the case the events of season one would have been episodes 1-36, leaving only episodes 37-50 to cover the events of season two (which would have been much more tightly focused and fast-paced as a result).
