Crew of the Novice Noah
Yuu Isami
The son of Kensaku and Midori Isami, two scientists known for their research on the Organic Engine, Yuu start the series as part of an Antibody squad tasked with protecting the ancient sentient space craft known as Orphan, alongside his mentor Kanan. 17 years old, because of his upbringing he's mature but very introverted and untrusting, with great difficulties in relating to other people. His life, however, takes a drastic turn the day he meets a mysterious girl called Hime Utsumiya piloting a newborn Brain Powerd. That, and his deep sensitivity, eventually bring him to question the Reclaimers' ways and defect to the Novice Noah's side...
- Ace Pilot
- Character Development
- Contemplate Our Navels (does it sometimes...)
- Defector From Decadence
- Expy (resembles in equal parts Kamille Bidan and Show Zama)
- Heroes Want Redheads
- Ineffectual Loner
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Mid-Season Upgrade
- Parental Abandonment
- She Is Not My Girlfriend (and Hime says the same about him. They don't convince anyone, though...)
- Tetsu Shiratori
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
Hime Utsumiya
Main heroine of the story, 17-year-old street girl Hime Utsumiya is an orphan who, alongside her three younger siblings, spent most of her earlier years in an orphanage. Her life experiences made her easy to open up to, and willing to listen to others, and she believes no one should be judged for how they react to their lives' happenings. Thanks to her great capacity for empathy, she manages to quickly come to an understanding with a newborn Brain Powerd who was born in front of her eyes... and one year later, she becomes part of a resistance group who opposes the Reclaimers' ambitions...
- Ace Pilot
- Action Girl
- Cool Big Sis
- The Empath
- Expy (possibly of Marvel Frozen)
- Fiery Redhead
- First Kiss (In Episode 2... subverted because Yuu didn't exactly understand the meaning of the gesture)
- Hime Cut (No Pun Intended)
- Hot-Blooded (can get like this at times...)
- Martial Pacifist (for someone who doesn't like fighting, she is really good at it...)
- The Messiah
- Parental Abandonment
- Promotion to Parent
- Red Headed Heroine
- Shut UP, Hannibal (not in the series. But Super Robot Taisen Alpha 2 has her deliver an awesome one to Char Aznable regarding his Utopia Justifies the Means reasoning.)
- Tsundere (Type B: she's usually in 'dere' mode, but can quickly turn on the 'tsun' when someone - usually Yuu or Nakki - annoys her.)
- Yamato Nadeshiko (She isn't one, but Nakki mistook her for one. Hime was not amused, to say the least)
Nanga Silverly
- Black Best Friend
- Cool Shades
- Gentle Giant
- Nice Guy
- Only Sane Man (Nanga is pretty much the only Brain pilot who doesn't have a tragic past, or at least one that is spoken of in the series)
- Token Minority (he's the only black guy among the Brain pilots)
Lasse Lundberg
- Alliterative Name
- Bishonen
- Heroic Sacrifice (attempted, but he miraculously survived.)
- Ill Boy (Suffers from leukemia)
Naoko Isami
Winston Gaybridge
Irene
- Ambiguously Brown
- The Medic
- Ship Tease (with Mohamed)
- Team Mom
- You Are in Command Now (after Captain Anoha disappears.)
Mohamed
- Large Ham
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Ship Tease (with Irene)
Higgins Saz
Nakki Guys
Kant Kestner
- Alliterative Name
- Child Prodigy (to the point where his Brain had trouble interfacing with his complex mind)
- Kid Looks Like A Girl
- Improbable Age (he's only ten years old, but he's already a world authority on the Vital Net!)
- Viewer Gender Confusion (it is quite easy to mistake him for a girl, when you first see him)
Captain Anoha McCormick (aka Baron Maximillian)
- Big Bad
- The Captain
- Despair Event Horizon (Her discovery that her son Jonathan had become a Reclaimer as a Take That against her marked her descent into madness.)
- A Mother To Her Men (quite probably, to make up for her parental failures...)
- Love Makes You Evil
- Mama Bear (To Ax Crazy extremes)
- Mask Power
- Paper-Thin Disguise (Completely averted.)
- Wig, Dress, Accent (Between the armor, the mask and the voice synthetizer, it was difficult to even suspect Baron Maximillian's real identity)
Reclaimers
Quincy Issa/Iiko Isami
The cold and ruthless 20-year-old leader of Orphan's Antibody squads, Quincy aka Iiko is Yuu's older sister, but she tries her best to distance herself from her family, even going as far as to change her name in her bid to emerge and realize herself independently of her parents. This goes as far as to make her develop two personalities - most of the time, the dominant one is the fanatical Quincy Issa who would not hesitate to sacrifice anything, even her own life or her own brother, to realize Orphan's will. However, underneath all that, it is still possible to catch some glimpses of the warm-hearted girl she once was...
- Aloof Big Sister
- Anti-Villain
- Evil Redhead (more like "very, very misguided redhead".)
- Fan Nickname (Some fans call her "DTR Girl", short for "Deaf To Reason Girl", for her stubborn refusal to listen to more moderate viewpoints.)
- Non-Indicative Name: "Iiko" means "good child." No wonder she wanted to change it.
- Pigeonholed Voice Actor (this is Kumiko Watanabe, AKA Katejina Loos, that we're talking about. If her character's female, then her character will be very much a bitch)
- Split Personality ("How many times do I have to tell you? My name is Quincy Issa!")
Kensaku Isami
Midori Isami
Jonathan Glenn
20 years old, Jonathan is Orphan's best Gran Cher pilot aside from Quincy, but his skills are offset by his arrogant, somewhat unstable personality. He often appears unable to control his own emotions, despite the fact that he can also be machiavellian in his plans. He is completely loyal to Orphan and to the Reclaimers' cause, but has no love for the Isami family - with the exception of Quincy, and even then he seems to regard her as just a useful pawn, for all that he seems to have sex with them an awful lot. His skills and grim determination, rooted in his own troubled past, will make him one of the most dangerous opponents for the Novice Noah crew...
- Ace Pilot
- Artificial Limbs: Not him personally, but his (organic) mech sports a hook with a machinegun nestled inside, at least, before he upgrades.
- Blond Guys Are Evil
- Calling the Old Man Out (the parent in question is Captain Anoha herself!)
- However, Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas
- Fan Nickname ("Johnny Boy")
- He-Man Woman Hater
- I Banged Your Mom: To Yuu, twice over, leading to this joke among fans of the show:
Johnathan: I did your sister. |
- Jerkass
- Kick the Dog (Okay, Johnny Boy, taunting Yuu about his dysfunctional family, and then destroying Nelly's house to show off your new mecha? You're a douchebag, even IF that mech is actively making you even crazier.)
- Manipulative Bastard (or, at least, he tries...)
- Mid-Season Upgrade (The Baronz.)
- Pet the Dog (To show that he isn't all that bad, he gets one such moment with Kumazo, the youngest of Hime's siblings.)
- The Scrappy (The show's fandom tends not to like him, and with good reason...)
- Smug Snake (would be a much better manipulator if he wasn't so darn overconfident about it...)
Kanan Gimms
- Abusive Parents
- Broken Bird
- Odd Friendship (With Higgins)
- Parental Abandonment (In a show where this trope is so common, Kanan gets points for being literally abandoned by her parents who didn't want her anymore)
- Romi Paku
- Saffron Henderson
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
- Zettai Ryouiki
Sheila Glass
- Ambiguously Brown
- Anti-Villain (while a Reclaimer, she is fundamentally a decent person with a soft spot for children.)
- Bokukko
- Broken Bird (see Despair Event Horizon for details.)
- Dark Action Girl
- Demoted to Extra(In the Super Robot Taisen episodes that feature Brain Powerd, her role is always minimal.)
- Despair Event Horizon (her three cute younger brothers died of starvation, and she was unable to do anything to save them. This led her to Orphan in a desperate attempt to ease her pain.)
- Not So Different (She and Higgins)
- Screw Destiny (A rare antivillain-to-heroine example: Sheila believes that everyone can shape his/her own destiny, and calls out Higgins for believing in fate)
Others
Nelly Kim
- Heroic Sacrifice
- Ill Girl
- Killed Off for Real
- The Messiah
- Mundane Utility (Hey, who would have known a Brain Powerd could be used for ice skating?)
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
