Lu Bu is one of the most feared warriors in the Three Kingdoms period. He was brought up by his adoptive father, Ding Yuan, whom he betrayed for the infamous horse Red Hare and an ample amount of gold. When he joined the ranks of Dong Zhuo he performed many extraordinary tasks, such as fighting Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei all at the same time.

But also while under the tyrant, he fell in love with the beautiful Diao Chan, who was then given to Dong Zhuo. So to get the mistress, he killed Dong Zhuo. This was all a plan conceived by Diao Chan's adoptive father Wang Yun to rid China of Dong Zhuo. Lu Bu then went off on his own; fighting mostly Cao Cao. In 198 AD he was betrayed by his own men, and executed by Cao Cao.

  • Back from the Dead - In the final chapter of Strikeforce.
  • Badass - Arguably one of history's greatest. Taking on Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Liu Bei all at the same time is just one of the many Badass things he has done.
  • Beast and Beauty - Lu Bu could be considered attractive, but his monstrous rage compared to the elegance and grace of Diao Chan justifies this trope.
  • The Berserker
  • Berserk Button - Do not kill Diao Chan when they're on the same side. You will not like the result.
  • Blade on a Stick - He uses his historical large halberd in all appearances sans DW6, which turns out as a...
    • Bifurcated Double Weapon - His double-edged halberds connect at the center of their shafts to form a cross-like quadruple weapon.
  • Blood Knight
  • Bonus Boss - Generally in the battles against Dong Zhuo. The game will specifically advise you to not fight him and instead take detours.
    • Subverted in DW5 and DW6, as even if you bypass him, when you're attacking Dong Zhuo he'll yell for Lu Bu to protect him, causing Lu Bu to head towards him and your character.
    • Also subverted in 7 with Shu's story mode at Hulao Gate (part 2 of the campaign against Dong Zhuo), as while he's a mandatory mini-boss you only have to "hold him off" long enough -- as Guan Yu with the help of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei -- for the Coalition to set up catapults with which to bombard Hulao Gate, at which point Lu Bu declares, "Hmph... if you want it so bad, you can have it!" and withdraws.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder - Has a high defection rate in DW6: Empires.
    • Justified since it's accurate to the novel. Even Warriors Orochi 2 lampshades on this: in one battle, when he betrays Kiyomori, a random Mook informs him of this "turn of events". Kiyomori response:

"Betrayal? No... That man is being true to himself".

  • Cool Horse - Red Hare
    • Hellish Horse - Becomes borderline demonic in DW7, complete with a crimson red eyes, a mane and tail of fire, continued in 8.
  • Dan Woren - DW4
  • The Dragon/The Brute
  • Final Boss - In the first game and in Strikeforce
    • Inverted in his final stage in 6, where the final bosses are almost the entire cast other than Diao Chan and Zhang Liao.
    • And again in DW8, where the Hypothetical route has everyone who was alive who had the slightest reason to want Lu Bu dead all gunning for him at once.
  • Flanderization - Goes from Memetic Badass in DW3 to almost literally summoning the powers of Hell itself in Strikeforce.
  • Fridge Brilliance: His card in Empires is "The One and Only," and its benefit is to power up Lu Bu even further. Many other characters' cards benefit your entire kingdom or army in some way, but Lu Bu's improves only himself, which fits in with his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder and general behavior in real life.
  • Game Breaker - Is in every appearance except DW4, DW6 and the crossover.
    • in 4 its mainly thanks to how he is incapable of abusing the game's mechanic, thanks to his Slow Charge 5 combined with the way that shockwave attacks(to clarify it is really his Charge 3 that makes Lu Bu broken, but it is weak in this game) is programmed to be unable to kill even peons and Lu Bu only have 4 Item slots turns him into a pretty mediocre character even by normal standards.
    • Somewhat inverted in 7. Where Lu Bu's halberd had long range, impressive speed, and unmatched power in all games prior, now anyone can hold the Halberd. Even if they're bad at it, just slap on a "Halberd Master" seal and they're as good as him. Not to mention that neither of his musou attacks are too impressive compared to others. So the act of giving Lu Bu's halberd to your favorite character potentially makes everyone a gamebreaker, or Lu Bu less of a gamebreaker...
      • However he's the only character in the game that can stack 3x synergy, giving him the highest attack power in the game. His C6 combo will kill anything in the game, even on chaos.
    • Due to how the Warriors Orochi games blended game mechanics from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, everyone got a mild to moderate nerfing to prevent game imbalance, which unfortunately robbed Lu Bu of most of his unstoppableness. He's still a very powerful character and can be nightmarish to fight, with only Orochi being harder, but he's not the same god slaying badass he was in the main DW games.
  • Heartbroken Badass - A dead Diao Chan will quickly lead to a painful period of mourning. Painful for his enemies, that is.
  • Hot-Blooded
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy - Everything he does is for Diao Chan's happiness...whether she reciprocates is a whole 'nother story.
  • Lightning Bruiser - In all games up to DW5, he can run as fast as most generic horses and has plenty of attacks possessing high power.
  • Memetic Mutation - DON'T PURSUE LU BU
    • Ascended Meme - An achievement/trophy in the 7th game: "Okay, you can pursue Lu Bu."
      • One character also spouts the very same line in the Wei campaign.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse - In some games, he kills Dong Zhuo for the sake of Diao Chan.
  • Neck Lift: At the end of his EX Combo in 7.
  • Nerf: In Empires, he is bumped down to the same low levels as every other character and sometimes gets his ass kicked very easily.
    • As stated in gamebreaker, since anyone in 7 can have his weapon and moveset, all that makes him different are 2 powerful but uncontrollable musou attacks, as well as an EX grapple move. If you prefer anyone else's musou or EX attacks, it's hard to argue about what makes him so special in 7.
    • However, as stated above in gamebreaker, he's the only character that can stack 3x synergy, giving him the highest attack power in the game. Equip 2 halberds, one preferably the black dragon halberd, then use his switch attack and proceed to murder all in your path at super speed.
  • Overprotective Dad: Mild version. Worries about his daughter's safety to the point of telling Zhang Liao to make sure she's safe in his canon route in DW8, but knows she's badass enough to take care of herself otherwise.
  • Papa Wolf: That said, don't expect to keep your limbs attached if you make a point of threatening his daughter's life. His love for her is so strong he can't even bring himself to fight her if they meet on the battlefield.
  • Pet the Dog - His love and devotion for Diao Chan.
    • He gets his own route with two paths in DW8, and in the canon route, he tells his daughter to flee instead of getting herself killed trying to save him from being executed by Cao Cao, and in the hypothetical route, everyone expects him to murder the emperor and be a Dong Zhuo style tyrant. Instead, he bloodlessly deposes the emperor after giving him a spot on "The Reason You Suck" Speech, is willing to let Chen Gong be his The Man Behind The Man instead of trying to kill him for being overambitious, and his ending has him declare as emperor the chaos is over and he will personally put down anyone who wants to sink the land into turmoil again.
  • Rated "M" for Manly: Seriously, who's dumb enough to deny this?
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the red to Zhang Liao's blue, lampshaded in one of the stages for Lu Bu's route in DW8.
  • Self-Made Orphan - Kills both of his adopted fathers (though the first isn't mentioned or seen in Dynasty Warriors until DW8). Backfires fatally when he offers his service after his defeat at Xiapi, as Cao Cao almost certainly realized this. (In the novel, Liu Bei pointed it out.)
  • SNK Boss - Subverted: he's not generally a boss character in any of the games beyond the first one, but when he's encountered at Hu Lao Gate (as opposed to later stages) as an enemy officer he's typically rendered twice as stronger than anyone else on the field, including the actual stage boss, Dong Zhuo. At Xiapi he's actually toned down out of necessity, being the stage boss and therefore having to be defeated... unless you defeat Diao Chan first.
  • The Starscream - If Lu Bu is serving under your command, start making funeral arrangements.
    • This however is what gets him executed after his defeat by Cao Cao at Xiapi, though Cao Cao doesn't actually mention this.
  • Theme Music Power-Up - So much so that "Lu Bu's Theme" is effectively the de facto theme to the series.
  • Turns Red: If you kill Diao Chan in his presence, he gets PISSED and becomes twice as strong, twice as fast, and nigh-invulnerable.

Diao Chan

Diao Chan is a dancing maiden who wants to destroy Dong Zhuo, on request by her adopted father. She is willing to use all of her available talents to see the despot is disposed of.

She is an elegant and patient woman who displays cunning with her charms. Normally a kind and benevolent individual, she can show a manipulative side if the occasion calls for it. She does not enjoy violence yet finds that battle is inevitable in the times she lives in.

Although she despises Dong Zhuo, her feelings on Lu Bu are far more complicated.

Originally an NPC since Dynasty Warriors 4, he becomes a playable character in Dynasty Warriors 8. He originally was on Dong Zhuo's side, but he quickly switches to joining either Lu Bu, though he initially sides with Cao Cao.
