Japanese spelling: Gien
Age: 37
Height: 6'0" (182cm)
A general who serves under Han Xuan, but betrays him after the paranoid warlord attempts to execute the revered general Huang Zhong. With Zhong, he defects to Shu. Through many battles, Wei Yan proves himself as courageous as any of the Five Tiger Generals.
Though seemingly a barbaric, wild beast, he has a kind heart and simply desires to prove his worth. Since his lord sincerely believes in him, he stays loyal to him. However, he isn't the brightest figure in the army and may neglect to consider the consequences of his sometimes rash behavior.
- Barbarian Hero
- The Brute
- Black Sheep
- Cool Mask
- Dance Battler - His moves with his dual-headed spear looked an awful lot like breakdancing steps
- Dangerous Deserter
- Defector From Decadence - In some games in Wei's scenario, he can be convinced to switch sides because of this.
- There's also his original defection from Han Xuan, featured in some games (particularly Xtreme Legends expansions), complete with Starscream moment.
- Double Weapon - A double-edge voulge in all appearances except DW6, which is a...
- Drop the Hammer - A cloned club moveset
- Everything's Better with Spinning - So many, many spins on his polearm moveset. His musou is nothing but spinning!
- Genius Bruiser: Comes up with an ingenious plan to catch Wei with its pants down in Shu's Hypothetical Route in DW8, which Zhuge Liang almost rejects out of hand.
- Hulk Speak - "Enemy...strong! Me...crush!"
- This is bizarre since there are no historical records he had a speech impediment.
- Lex Lang - DW4-7 Also a case of Talking to Himself with Zhuge Liang.
- Pretty funny, given their relationship.
Ma Dai
"The Cheerful Man of the World"
"Look out! Here I come!" |
Voiced by: Osamu Ryutani (Japanese), Justin Giddings (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: (Unknown)
Japanese spelling: Batai
Height: 5'11" (180cm)
Ma Chao's loyal & faithful cousin who follows him to Shu. He fights in crucial parts of the battlefield during Zhuge Liang's Southern and Northern Campaigns.
Although wise in the ways of the world, Ma Dai has a sunny disposition and always tries to look on the bright side of life. He is a trustworthy vassal who can always be relied on to preform his tasks well, whom Zhuge Liang respects greatly.
- Action Survivor: Inverted in that he is good at fighting; its just that he doesn't seem to like to.
Zhang Liao: I hear the warriors of Xiliang are fierce. Show me what you're made of! |
Zhuge Liang: I am always impressed with how exceptionally capable you are. You make it easy to focus on crafting my strategies. |
- Beware the Nice Ones
- Brilliant but Lazy: Inverted. Ma Dai is noted as a intelligent tactician and has the cheerful, relaxed attitude - but is also known for his reliability & willingness to work.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: In-game, noted for being brilliant & reliable. Fan-wise, noted for being hilarious.
- Cousin Yin Yang
- Deadpan Snarker: Light on the deadpan, heavy on the snark. Also a Sarcastic Devotee.
Ma Dai: Young master, what are you doing? Even if you are short on friends, but please don't be bringing the enemy around here. |
- Do Anything Soldier: Support general at Wu Zhang Plains, strategist & commander in Subjugation of Shu...
- Forever War: Despite his cheerfulness, its noted in his reason for fighting.
Ma Dai: Life ends at death. If you survive a battle, you'll just live to fight another one. |
Ma Dai: Being alone is never fun. Being with your friends is the way to go. |
- Golf Clubbing: His first Musou.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Kinshiro Morooka
- Talking to Himself: Also voices Yuan Shao.
- Ho Yay: With Ma Chao.
Ma Dai: Young master, you sure know how to get me motivated! |
- Improbable Weapon User: Fights with a giant paintbrush. Fans immediately noticed the stylistic similarity to another game.
- He attacks with images of the animals that symbolize Wei, Wu & Shu.
- Mukokuseki: He looks like a cross between gorgeous Spanish actor Gael Garcú} Bernal and Jake Gyllenhaal rather than appearing Asian ...not that anyone should complain.
- He could pass for ethnically Uighur.
- Nice Hat
- Noodle Incident: Subverted in a manner. Ma Dai's most famous act in the source material is the slaying of Wei Yan (who at this point had defied orders) and the manner in which he received it (secret order via Zhuge Liang that no one else knew about). In-game, we're shown he's received the order but we're never shown the actual betrayal or killing. Also counts as a Cryptic Background Reference.
- Now Let Me Carry You: To Ma Chao.
Ma Dai: Young master, I know that you are strong against adversity. Yet, please allow me to escort you to safety. |
- Messy Hair: A subtle example, considering its mostly hidden by his Nice Hat.
- Nice Guy
- Perma-Stubble
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Subverted, as he appears the Red to Ma Chao's Blue but is the Blue to Ma Chao's red. He's just more cheerful & calmer.
Ma Dai: Calm down, you're getting carried away again. You're supposed to lead us! |
- Renaissance Man: See the quote in All a Part of the Job.
- Run or Die: Definitely chooses to run. Considering what he's been through, it makes sense he'd feel this way.
Ma Dai:Whatever happens in a battle, the key is to survive. Basic stuff perhaps, but important nonetheless. |
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sensitive guy to Ma Chao's manly man. Subverted in that he's far more grounded than Ma Chao. That and he looks far more manly...
- Shut UP, Hannibal:
Sima Yi: The survivors from Xiliang... Here, I'll make it so you can see your people again! |
- Smarter Than You Look
- Sole Survivor: With Ma Chao; he supported his cousin's Roaring Rampage of Revenge but never had Ma Chao's fervor for it.
Ma Dai: You have vengeance at last. What are we going to do now? |
- Tall, Dark and Handsome: Mixed in with some Tall, Dark and Snarky.
Xiahou Yuan: This Ma Chao is supposed to be really strong. Hey, does that mean you're strong too? |
- Team Dad: Shu's, after Zhuge Liang dies.
- The Pen Is Mightier: And how!
Guan Ping
"The Star of the Next Generation"
"I shall give this battle everything I've got!" |
Voiced by: Ryohei Nagao (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: 219
Japanese spelling: Kanpei
Age: 19
Height: 5'9" (176cm)
Guan Ping is the adopted son of Guan Yu and older brother of Guan Suo. Along with his brother, Xing Cai, and Liu Shan, he is thought of as the future of Shu.
Guan Ping idolizes his father, striving to live up to his image. He is humble to his peers and acts in a chivalrous manner. Due to his youth, however, he can be quite naive and reckless on the field. He is also very close to Xing Cai and could potentially have feelings for her that go beyond being comrades.
- Badass
- Badass Family -He IS Guan Yu's son
- BFS - In DW5, 7, and 8.
- Blade on a Stick - In DW6
- Family Honor - He feels as though he should become a son his father can be proud of. Hell, if he gets captured in Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires, he says "My father would be ashamed..."
- Happily Adopted - Ironically, he looks a lot more like Guan Yu than Guan Suo does.
- He was his biological son historically.
- Hot Blooded: Especially in DW8.
- Nice Guy - Very much so.
- Ship Tease - With Xing Cai in the earlier games, fades out of the pictures by DW7/DW8 when Liu Shan debuted.
- Tall, Dark and Handsome
- Turn Out Like His Father - His main goal. Totally understandable.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy
Xing Cai
"The Young Defender"
"My only purpose is to fulfill the role assigned to me on the battlefield." |
Voiced by: Junko Noda (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: (Unknown)
Japanese spelling: Seisai
Age: 19
Height: 5'5" (165cm)
The daughter of Zhang Fei, Xing Cai is a mentally resilient woman who bears the responsibility of enduring several hardships. While many worry for her safety, her strong determination prevents her from depending too much on them.
Her relationship with Guan Ping can be interpreted as close comradeship or a budding romance. Both warriors are the same age, act very respectfully to one another, and share similar responsibilities to their country.
- Action Girl
- Carrie Savage - DW5
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: For Liu Shan in DW8.
- Composite Character - Her character is based off of Zhang Fei's historical two daughters, both of whom married Liu Shan.
- Daddy's Girl
- Dual-Wielding - A shield and a fork in DW5. In DW7, she opts out the fork for a broadsword.
- Hair Decorations
- Fan-Preferred Couple - MAJOR Unresolved Sexual Tension with Guan Ping following their debut (in the same game, no less), much thanks to Ship Tease, and considering who her canon choice turns out to be...
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me - She wields a Long fork and shield in 5 and a sword and shield in 7.
- Meaningful Name - "Xing" means "star", while "Cai" is "glory"; from an in-story perspective, she represents "the star that lights the path for Shu".
- The Other Darrin - In the localization of DW5, she was voiced by Carrie Savage. Since the crossover, she has been voiced by Wendee Lee, who imitated Savage's voice tone in those games. But then in DW7, Lee shifts to a significantly deeper, throatier voice, making the difference not just noticeable, but STRIKING. This is also to match the characterization provided by Junko Noda, who got Xing Cai as a much more stoic girl (whereas Carrie made Xing Cai sound more cheery and high-pitched)
- Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
- Retcon - An odd example. In DW7's final stage, she appears to be killed in battle. However, in Liu Shan's Legend Mode stage in DW7XL, which takes place after Cheng Du, her death and the death of Jiang Wei is undone.
- Ugly Guys Hot Daughter - She must have had a gorgeous mother.
- Sources clash for this one: Zhang Fei kidnapped Xiahou Yuan's 14-year old daughter/niece. When realizing she was from such a fine family, he married her; this might make Xing Cai a could-be Child by Rape, as if she wasn't The Woobie already. This also makes her Xiahou Ba's niece (although this is unlikely given they appear to be the same age in-game) or cousin.
- The Woobie - Her Musou Mode in DW5 more or less involves watching every one around her die.
- Iron Woobie - She doesn't let it get to her a whole lot though.
Guan Suo
"The Charming Ladies Man"
"I am the son of the God of War! There is no way I can lose this battle!" |
Voiced by: Hiroaki Miura (Japanese), Spike Spencer (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: (Unknown)
Japanese spelling: Kansoku
Height: 5'8" (172cm)
Guan Suo is Guan Yu's biological (thought to be fictional) third son and younger brother of Guan Ping. His earnest efforts are what earn him the trust of several Shu generals. Known for his good looks and charm, he has many a female admirer.
He is a young man who takes his duties very seriously. Compared to his stern father and older brother, Guan Suo is a bit light-hearted and is a little wet behind the ears. Even if he doesn't always believe in himself, he uses earnest effort to overcome any shortcomings he thinks he may have. He seeks to someday become a warrior worthy of his father's name.
- Battle Couple - With Bao Sanniang
- Bishonen
- Chick Magnet - As per his profile, the ladies love him.
- Expy - Many have noticed similarities between him and Maeda Keiji from Sengoku Basara.
- Family Honor
- Fighting with Chucks
- Happily Adopted
- Kick Guy - His unique attacks mostly consists of kicks.
- Oblivious to Love: For the most part, Bao Sanniag excepted. And even with her, it's heavily hinted he wants to take things slow, while she's a lot more impatient.
- Nice Guy
- Sleeves Are for Wimps
Bao Sanniang
"The Spontaneous and Happy Young Lady"
"When I fight, I do it in style, and I never lose!" |
Voiced by: Ai Nonaka (Japanese) Kari Wahlgren (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: (Unknown)
Japanese spelling: Baosanjou
Height: 5'4" (162cm)
A free-spirited beauty who doesn't want to be tied down to anyone, Bao Sanniang is the third daughter of the Bao family and wife to Guan Suo. She is a maiden content to roam wherever she fancies and, since she is a naturally gifted warrior, she has no problem handling herself.
Bao Sanniang isn't impressed by most of the men she encounters and is especially offended when they don't take her strengths seriously. Most people she encounters call her a "little girl" or tell her that she isn't fit to be on the battlefield. Her encounter with Guan Suo sparked an infatuation with him. She is very happy to be near him since he finds her exuberance to be entertaining, inspiring, and lovely.
- Action Girl
- Badass Family: Automatically qualifies given Guan Yu is her father in law.
- Battle Couple - With Guan Suo
- Best Her to Bed Her - stated that she'd only marry a man who could best her in a contest of strength. According to the original story, Guan Suo sought her out after hearing the rumors of this, and ended up beating her in a duel. It's handled somewhat differently in the game, but the spirit of it is still there.
- Blithe Spirit
- Catgirl - Her ground musou and EX attack have her using cat-like attacks. Her official artwork features her playing with cats and her husband even lampshades this. She's only lacking ears and a tail.
- Expy - Has gained plenty of comparisons to Kunoichi.
- Fashionable Asymmetry
- Killer Yoyo - Fights with a bladed variation
- Hey, It's That Voice! - It's Konoka Konoe! Huh...maybe that explains the Moe Moe voice Bao Sanniang has...
- Ms. Fanservice
- The Scrappy - She's the first character to not be from the original Romance of the Three Kingdoms, instead coming from The Legend of Hua Guan Suo, a side-story dedicated entirely to Guan Suo not written by the same author. For this, she's not appreciated in all circles...
- ...which is in turn lampshaded in her "Officer Defeated" quote.
- Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy - After seeing Guan Suo on the battlefield, she pursues him. Fortunately, this doesn't derail her into a Stalker with a Crush.
- Stripperiffic - Even by this series' standards, she's not wearing much.
- Tattooed Crook - She has a small butterfly tattoo on her abdomen.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend - Defeat Guan Suo in a battle with her present and she'll get angry.
