Meirin Kanzaki
Voiced by: Saeko Chiba |
By day, your typical teenage girl who has a few good friends and is hopelessly in love with her Victorious Childhood Friend, Asuka. She loves feng shui divination, and seems pretty good at it. Sometimes, she's able to use it to help out her friends. By night, however, she's Dr. Rin, an online fortune-telling wonder who gets tons of e-mails and is driving her father's business into ruin. Things begin to become weird when a strange evil spirit seems intent on stealing her "power," although what this power could be, she has no idea. Her only protections are her loyal True Companions and her magic hakke crystal, which protects her from harm. She is the reincarnation of Haoyung Laila, the person who sanctions Meirin's feng shui ability.
- Badass Adorable
- Dragons Up the Yin-Yang: Her hakke crystal whenever it activates.
- Expy: Of Serena, from Sailor Moon. Or Miaka, from Fushigi Yuugi. Frankly, the entire series is built as a Homage to these two, so it should be expected.
- Foil: Against Asuka.
- Fortune Teller: Using her feng shui powers as the anonymous Dr. Rin.
- Genki Girl: Particularly on the walk to school with Asuka, where she invariably goes into Super-Deformed mode and hovers around Asuka as a Human Hummingbird.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Hair of Gold
- Henshin Hero
- Love Freak: In true Shojo Messiah fashion.
- Mad Love: Her affections for Asuka look like this at first, but it's easy enough to tell that he returns her affections a few episodes in.
- Magical Girl
- The Messiah
- Motor Mouth: Whenever she's thinking about Asuka.
- Naive Everygirl
- Odango Hair: Heck, she's a Sailor Moon Expy, so these come with the terrain.
- Opposites Attract: She's a Genki Magical Girl Love Freak. He's a straight-laced skeptic. Naturally, they make an adorable couple.
- Reincarnation Romance
- Secret Identity Identity
- Weirdness Magnet
- Victorious Childhood Friend: It's so obvious from the start of the series that you don't even need the spoilers.
Asuka Yuuki
Voiced by: Takayuki Sorita |
Meirin's childhood friend and next-door neighbor. Asuka is largely a skeptic on all matters of the occult and also trying to maintain a normal middle school life at the same time. Needless to say, the appearance of evil forces out to take away his best friend throw him out of that rut pretty quickly. He holds up pretty well, despite being one of the few members of the cast not to have magic powers until he finds out he does. He plays on the soccer team along with Tokiwa and Shinagawa. He often winds up playing the Straight Man foil to... just about everyone else in the cast. He is, in fact, the reincarnation of Seiryuu, the blue dragon, who previously had a relationship with Haoyung Laila. They were forced to separate, which is part of the reason why he begins the series so determinedly skeptical of magic.
- Badass Normal: He does a lot of damage for one of the few main cast members without magic powers. Initially. He later figures out who he is, and then he gets to use magic.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Dragons Up the Yin-Yang: Well, he is the reincarnation of one.
- Even the Wombats Want Him: Once Cynthia does a Heel Face Turn, she decides that she's in love with Asuka too. This would be bad enough, given Meirin's obsession with him, but it's made even worse, because not only is she not human, she is not even a carbon-based lifeform.
- Face Heel Turn: Once he awakens as the reincarnation of Seiryuu.
- Foil: To both Meirin and Tokiwa.
- Heel Face Turn
- Opposites Attract: She's a Genki Magical Girl Love Freak. He's a straight-laced skeptic. Naturally, they make an adorable couple.
- Ordinary Middle School Student
- Reincarnation Romance
- Straight Man
- The Team Normal: Subverted later.
- Tiger Versus Dragon: His rivalry against Tokiwa, given their past lives.
- Victorious Childhood Friend
Takashi Tokiwa
Voiced by: Yuuto Kazama |
An Onmyoji from a local shrine, he transfers to Meirin's school at the beginning of the series and immediately sets his sights on her, declaring Asuka his rival and trying to burn down the school while she's in it just so that he can rescue her from it. Once his Demonic Posession is cleared up, he immediately goes about showing a much nicer personality that, while still narcissistic and hopelessly flirty, is more Chick Magnet than Stalker with a Crush. He still has a crush on Meirin and competes with Asuka for her affections. He is the reincarnation of Byakko, the white tiger.
- Bishonen: Although most of the other guardians have this to some extent or another, it's really played up with Tokiwa.
- Blond Guys Are Evil - Subverted
- Bromantic Foil: Really, either he or Shinagawa could be this. They both reflect different aspects of Asuka's personality.
- Chick Magnet: Every girl in the school except Meirin and Yue seems to be one of his Fangirls.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Two of his antics included setting the school on fire while Meirin was in it, just so he could rescue her; and another was using Shikigami to try to drive Asuka's bus off a bridge. Thankfully, he gets better before anyone gets permanently injured.
- Defeat Means Friendship
- Fortune Teller: The resident one at the Nikumo Shrine using Onmyodo. Mostly, he does love fortunes.
- Handsome Lech: Definitely for the first few episodes.
- Heel Face Turn
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Tokiwa is voiced by Yuuto Kazama, who also played Yamato Ishida in Digimon Adventure. Heck, Tokiwa even has the same haircut Yamato's 02 incarnation.
- Love Makes You Evil: Subverted-ish? Tokiwa is evil in the beginning, and even after his Heel Face Turn, it's still pretty apparent he likes her. It's just that the connection between the two is feigned.
- Miko: A rare male example.
- Murder the Hypotenuse: Through the first few episodes.
- Parental Abandonment: Unlike Asuka and Meirin, his family never appears except in flashbacks. One wonders how he convinced them to let him transfer schools after falling for Meirin.
- The Rival: Against Asuka. He declares it himself.
- Stalker with a Crush: For the first few episodes.
- Tiger Versus Dragon: Same as Asuka.
- Yandere: While he's posessed.
Banri Shijou
Voiced by: Yumi Kakazu |
A young boy who can tell fortunes using tarot cards. Banri appears first trying to trap Meirin in a white card in order to steal her powers, usually by manipulating her feelings for Asuka. As it turns out, Banri was being manipulated by Cynthia, a favorite toy of his mother's, in the trauma he suffered after his mother died. After Cynthia herself was purified, Banri went back to being a cute young boy. He is the reincarnation of Genbu, the black tortoise.
- Bishonen
- Cute Mute: Until Meirin institutes some Epiphany Therapy on him.
- Defeat Means Friendship
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: At least partially due to the Gender Bender, but even under normal circumstances, Viewer Gender Confusion can still pop up.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita: While posessed by Cynthia.
- Epiphany Therapy: It only takes one Whoopi Epiphany Speech from Meirin and his dead mother, and the trauma and mutism he had suffered is gone.
- First Law of Gender Bending - Turns out Banri is a boy. When Cynthia possesses him, his hair grows full length and he dons a Gothic Lolita dress. According to the mangaka, Banri becomes completely female when possessed. Cynthia does this just because she likes to wear cute clothes.
- Fortune Teller: Using tarot cards.
- Grand Theft Me
- Kid Samurai
- Missing Mom - Banri blames himself for his mother's death when he was younger.
- Tagalong Kid
- You Gotta Have Purple Hair - More evident when he's female.
Eddy Tsukioka
Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi |
After an unfortunate accident that the soccer team's coach has after school hours, Eddy takes over as substitute coach while his parrot, Takoyaki, frustrates the team from his hangout on the net. He quickly gains a reputation for being particularly strict with them. He shows a bit of a crush on Meirin quite early on, although this is yet another play by the evil spirit for Meirin's hakke crystal. During a date with her, he shows off some of his astrology skills. He is the reincarnation of Suzaku, the red bird.
- Bishonen
- Blond Guys Are Evil - Subverted.
- Defeat Means Friendship
- Fortune Teller: Using astrology.
- Kansai Regional Accent: Despite the fact that most Americans learning Japanese as a second language learn the Tokyo dialect.
- Stern Teacher: He quickly gains a reputation for this sort of treatment of the soccer team.
- Token Foreigner: The only gaijin in the cast.
Yue Konishi
Voiced by: Junko Takeuchi |
One of Meirin's two best friends. Cool, calm, and collected; she serves as a foil for the much more excitable and ditzy Shuuko. Shinagawa pursues her with a passion that she seems to tolerate, but without actually giving him any ideas that she reciprocates.
- Beta Couple: With Shinagawa.
- Cool Big Sis: Although she takes on this role, she's exactly the same age as Meirin.
- Foil: Against Shuuko.
- Romantic Two-Girl Friendship: She jokes with Meirin a lot about this.
- Those Two Girls: With Shuuko.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
Shuuko Kasukabe
Voiced by: Kana Kouguchi |
The more ditzy and valley-girl-ish of Meirin's two best friends, Shuuko is nonetheless a devoted friend who will always be there for Meirin. Of course, if there's a chance to chase a cute guy in the process, that's even better.
- Fan Girl: For... just about any cute guy.
- Foil: Against Yue.
- Hollywood Dateless
- In Love with Love
- Naive Everygirl: Even more than Meirin, Shuuko really embodies this trope.
- Serial Romeo
- Those Two Girls: With Yue.
Daisuke Shinagawa
Voiced by: Kei Watanabe |
A good guy at heart, Shinagawa is the earnest Plucky Comic Relief. He's Asuka's best friend and plays on the soccer team with him. He has an obvious crush on Yue, but can't convince her to give him the time of day.
- Beta Couple: With Yue.
- Bromantic Foil: Although later on, Tokiwa starts to take on this role more often.
- Butt Monkey
- Plucky Comic Relief: His raison d'etre.
- Those Two Guys: Later on, after Ooimachi is introduced, this dynamic begins to show up between those two.
Tenshin, Nanao, Cynthia, and Takoyaki
The four pets of the main characters. Tenshin belongs to Meirin, Nanao to Tokiwa, Cynthia to Banri, and Takoyaki to Eddy. Two of them are not actual animals - Nanao is a shikigami that looks like a seven-tailed Kitsune, and Cynthia is actually a panda doll.
- Abhorrent Admirer: Cynthia to Asuka. This is less because she's ugly and more because she's... well, a panda.
- Cunning Like a Fox: Nanao
- Everything's Better with Monkeys: Tenshin
- Interspecies Romance: Cynthia, a panda doll, is in love with Asuka, who is human.
- Japanese Politeness: Nanao exclusively uses the most humble Japanese speech. Presumably, this is due to her status as a shikigami servant.
- Kansai Regional Accent: Takoyaki.
- Living Toys: Cynthia.
- Pinocchio Syndrome - The reason (along with Demonic Posession) for Banri's Grand Theft Me.
- Ridiculously Cute Critters
- Polly Wants a Microphone: Takoyaki.
- Small Annoying Creature: At least one of them for most fans.
- Talking Animal: Three out of the four. The one exception is Tenshin, who only squawks, although he can still communicate with Meirin.
- Team Pet
Emiko Kanzaki
Meirin's mother.
- Women Are Wiser
- Cute Bruiser: In her younger days.
- Tsundere: Toward Meirin's father.
- Waif Fu: Evidently, she used to be a pro-wrestler. She's shown in pictures and flashbacks beating up men twice her size.
Shou Kanzaki
Meirin's father. He works as a television feng-shui master, but the mysterious Dr. Rin puts him to shame and is his Arch Enemy.
- Bumbling Dad
- Chivalrous Pervert: He seems to pay an inordinate amount of attention to his female fans while he's already married.
- Phony Psychic: Well, he believes he's good at it, anyway.
Meirin's Grandfather
A somewhat weird old guy who provides some background about the legacies of of the hakke crystal and the feng shui board.
Kyoumi Kanzaki
Meirin's big brother. Generally a decent guy who provides her with some advice. He's actually the King of Darkness. He's also not really Meirin's brother. He simply tricked the family in order to get close to Meirin.
- Big Bad
- Stoic Spectacles: Actually Four Eyes, Zero Soul.
