Enji Todoroki - Endeavor

Flame Hero
Debut: Chapter 28 (Manga), Episode 17 (Anime)
Quirk: Hellflame
Voiced by Tetsu Inada (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (English dub)

The second-highest-ranking (currently highest-ranking) Hero in Japan and father of Shōto Todoroki. As of current, he holds the record of having resolved the most villain cases in history, but inside his heart is a simmering envy of All Might and a strong desire to surpass him in every way. This has led to a rocky relationship with his family, to say the least, and plenty of strife. His Quirk, Hellflame, allows him to emit powerful jets of fire from his body. Even though his body is consequently naturally resistant to heat, he can still risk overheating his organism if he isn't careful.

Endeavor exhibits the following tropes:
  • Abusive Parent: He treated both Toya and Shōto as a means to surpass All Might in terms of raw power, the most notable instance being with Shōto. Flashbacks show him forcefully dragging his son away from other children at play just so he could train him, and slowly driving his wife Rei to madness - so much so that she threw boiling water on Shōto's left eye.
  • The Ace: Say what you want about him as a person, but Endeavor is number-two for a very good reason - he is extremely proficient as a Hero and, as cited above, has resolved more villain incidents than any other.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: He somehow manages to be this for Shōto during the Remedial Course, cheering him on at the top of his lungs, while his son would rather not make eye contact with him.
  • Anti-Hero: Deconstructed. Aside from being an abusive father and husband, he generally presents himself as very grouchy and sullen, which has garnered him very few followers. He's also the only one seen killing the Nomus he fights; though, given how Nomus are blindly subservient to Shigaraki and used to be normal people, it could be seen as a Mercy Kill.
  • The Atoner: Deconstructed. No matter how hard Endeavor wants to change his ways and fix the bridges he burned by his ruthless ambition, he finds that it will never be easy. Out of all his family, only his daughter Fuyumi is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, while Natsuo rejects him a priori and Shōto is willing to let the changes sink in slowly. Eventually, Endeavor decides that it's best to let his family recuperate on their own, while he stays at their own home.
  • Badass Baritone: Whether it's in Japanese or English, Endeavor will have a deep, gruff voice that matches his imposing, callous exterior.
  • Badass Beard: A flaming one at that, which can be doused and lit at will.
  • Blood Knight: If only for work's sake, Endeavor truly relishes the prospect of an honorable fight.
  • Byronic Hero: Often teetering on the border of Nominal Hero.
  • The Comically Serious: Given how Endeavor has very little charisma and social intelligence, him getting teamed with the chatty, charming Hawks naturally leads to some humor at his expense.
  • Determinator: No matter what it is, Endeavor will not surrender once he sets his mind to it.
  • Driven by Envy: His main drive to be a top Hero was his simmering jealousy of All Might, and he went to some quite morally repugnant ends to make that work, which included trying to use his sons as a vessel for succeeding All Might.
  • Genius Bruiser: An unintelligent individual would have no chance of becoming number two on the Hero list; Endeavor displays great tactical and deductive skill, especially since he's able to follow Midoriya's Techno Babble when he interns with him.
  • Glory Hound: Deconstructed. His relentless pursuit of the first spot on the top Hero list alienates and repels his children from him, and drives his wife to madness. Ultimately, it all ends up being completely in vain when Endeavor does become the number-one Hero, but due to a technicality, which means he didn't earn it.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Being the number-two Hero in Japan on the one hand, and very surly, ruthless and callous on the other hand, Endeavor ticks all the boxes for this trope.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He is overwhelmingly envious of All Might's charisma and advancement over him as the number-one Hero in Japan, and has complete tunnel vision when it comes to surpassing him.
  • Hate Sink: Suffice to say the bad things he does tend to outweigh the good things, judging from how he's set up. Subverted from the Remedial Course arc onward, where Endeavor makes conscious efforts to atone for all the misery he put his family through.
  • Hellfire: His Quirk's official name is Hellflame, and he has several named attacks that invoke this trope, most notably the Hell Spider and Hell's Curtain variants of his Flashfire Fist attacks.
  • Heroic Build: He may be a Nominal Hero at most, but he's definitely got an impressive physique that matches the trope.
  • I Hate Past Me: He outright states this in a monologue he holds before blasting the High-End Nomu with the brunt of his Quirk's power.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Ironic for his Quirk power; they highlight just how unemotional he is.
  • It's All About Me: Single-minded in his obsession with becoming the number 1 Hero, Endeavor will take advantage of anybody, regardless of how they feel about it.
  • Jerkass: As soon as his first dialogue scene, Endeavor is established as cruel, cold, vain, unpleasant and very egoistic. It's eventually revealed through Shōto's backstory that he was an abusive father and husband.
  • Large Ham: Normally, he tends to be soft-spoken and collected, but when the situation is opportune (and especially when Shoto is concerned)), Endeavor will become hammy enough to rival All Might.

"Shooootoooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!"

  • Logical Weakness: Overusing his Quirk's power will lead him to overheating his organs and deteriorating his body's abilities. This is part of the reason why he sought out a woman whose Quirk could counteract these effects as his wife.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name, Enji, means "flame boss". His Hero name symbolizes the amount of hard work he's willing to put in to overpower and surpass All Might.
  • The Mentor: To his son, Shōto, naturally. He later opts to teach him some of his own moves. He also becomes one to Midoriya and Bakugo when they opt to intern with him alongside his son, and he proves to be a very good teacher.
  • Not Quite Flight: He can use his Quirk to generate flames from the soles of his feet to suspend himself in midair, but he can't actually move from that position.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Very few people refer to him by either his first or his last name, them being Gran Torino, and weirdly enough, Dabi. Everyone else refers to him as Endeavor.
  • Parental Neglect: He all but ignored his daughter Fuyumi and second son Natsuo because they were unfit for Hero work. Natsuo is the most resentful of his children as a consequence.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's rarely ever seen without a sullen scowl.
  • Playing with Fire: What his Quirk is all about, in case you haven't noticed that already.
  • The Rival: To All Might. His methods of raising his son are done with the intent on raising a protege who can outshine any student of his rival.
  • Smug Super: For all his egoism and negativity, Endeavor is excellent at his Hero work. There's a reason he's number two, after all.

The Lurkers

Yu Takeyama — Mt. Lady

Mineyama Hero
Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)
Quirk: Gigantification
Voiced by Kaori Nazuka (Japanese), Jamie Marchi (English dub)

The 23rd-ranked hero in Japan, Takeyama is young, attractive, and unfortunately, a glory hound and attention-seeker who could be considered the Kardashian of heroines. At first, she was depicted as an egotist who cared far more about the attention and money she got as a heroine than any desire to be heroic. However, after the Hideout Raid Arc, she started to change for the better.

Mt. Lady exhibits the following tropes:
  • Achilles' Heel: Her Quirk doesn't allow her to choose any height in between her normal 163 cm and her giant height of over 20 meters, which makes her highly liable for collateral damage.
  • Agony of the Feet: Her costume is made of a stretchy material that can grow with her, but she can’t find shoes that do the same, meaning it’s easy for her to injure them if she doesn’t watch where she steps.
  • Anti-Hero: She does Hero work not to cull crime, or to help make people's lives better, but because it garners her attention and money. She's also known for using her looks to gain favors and treats her apprentices like serfs.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Heroic version; her quirk lets her grow to giant size.
  • Attention Whore: She has it, she flaunts it. Takeyama is a woman who strives on being larger than life in more ways than one.
  • Baby Got Back: This is a woman who actually encourages Male Gaze, given the design of her costume.
  • Bad Boss: Not in the sense that she abuses interns, but her idea of mentoring Mineta consisted of using him as a servant. Mineta was rather traumatized later. Of course, kind of hard to sympathize with him either...
  • Cat Fight: Got into one on a talk show with Midnight after simply stating Midnight was 31 years old; much to Mineta’s delight.
  • Destructive Savior: Given the nature of her quirk, she causes a lot of collateral damage, and the premiums on her Hero Insurance are getting pretty high.
  • Hypocrite: Played for laughs in the "interview scene", where she calls Midnight out for being an Attention Whore. Or course, Midnight is really no better.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She may be attention-seeking, bitchy and opportunistic, but her heart's very much in the right place. She is a Hero and she's willing to put her life on the line to protect people.
  • Kill Steal: Her Character Defining Moment (as in, defining her as a bitch) comes in the first chapter when she shows up and apprehends the villain that Kamui Woods was fighting, taking the credit for it herself. She apologizes later, but it’s obvious to everyone (including Woods) that it’s insincere.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She steals the credit for busting a villain whom Kamui Woods was fighting in the first chapter. Later, Woods is ranked 7th on the Hero Billboard Chart, where she ranks 23rd.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • She can grow from her human size of 5'4" to a giant-size of 67'8", exactly, no larger, no smaller. Thus, reaching a foe (or rescuing a bystander) in a place too small for her to enter can be challenging, if not impossible.
    • Also, her size makes her a large and visible target. All For One took her down without even working up a sweat.
  • Meaningful Name: "Mt. Lady" references the fact that Takeyama turns into a 20-meter-high colossus using her Quirk.
  • Most Common Superpower: Truthfully, her bust-size is around average (relatively speaking). Her rear, on the other hand...
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her costume, by pure necessity, is completely skintight so it could stretch along with her size increase; on the other hand, it does her shapely figure a lot of justice.
  • Only in It For the Money: Subverted. She initially comes across as very thrifty and greedy when it comes to it, but it turns out she only wants the extra finances to cover up for all the collateral damage she causes during her Heroics.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She tends to exploit her aforementioned looks to get her way.
  • The Rival: Seems to be this to Midnight.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful: She isn't afraid to shake her assets a little to persuade vendors to give her freebies. Other pro-heroes tend to question whether she has any dignity at all.
  • Taking the Bullet: Arguably her most heroic action was shielding the students when Magne tried to kill them using his partner Mr. Compass as the bullet; she survived the hit, but given how much it seemed she was hurt, it is doubtful the intended targets would have.

Sir Nighteye's Agency

Mirai Sasaki - Sir Nighteye

Debut: Chapter 124 (Manga), Episode 63 (Anime)
Quirk: Foresight
Voiced by Shinichiro Miki (Japanese), Brandon McInnis (English dub)

A pro Hero and mentor to Mirio Togata; also All Might's long-time acquaintance and former sidekick. Despite being quite the pessimist, he believes humor is an inseparable element of life. His Quirk, "Foresight", allows him to predict a second person's future simply by making eye contact with them.

Nighteye exhibits the following tropes:
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He seems to value classy suits over the regular Hero costumes the others wear, and his is a silver one, complete with a red tie splotched with white polka dots.
  • Badass Normal: Other than allowing him to predict the future of anyone he sets his eyes on, his Quirk has no combat utility, and he fights exclusively using incredibly heavy seals.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: When his shirt is torn open, it's evident that Nighteye has a very defined musculature beneath his rather unimposing business suit, which is also his Hero outfit.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: His Quirk's power is to peer into an individual's future and determine how things will go down. It turns out that this power is hampered by his general pessimism.
  • Fan Boy: Of All Might, despite their past disagreements - his office being stacked with All Might merchandise is proof enough. One of the reasons he opted to be his sidekick in the first place is because of his enormous adulation of the former.
  • The Fatalist: He firmly believes that You Can't Fight Fate and shoots down any counterarguments with disdain. Ultimately, it turns out that this is one of his worst flaws, and that it hinders the use of his power.
  • Fragile Speedster: What he lacks in brute strength he makes up for with amazing agility and speed, as well as his throwing seals, which weigh around 5 kilograms each.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's a pro Hero held in high esteem by Togata and even Gran Torino, but he's incredibly grouchy and stringent. Most notably, he has a Tickle Torture machine for anyone who fails to make him laugh.
  • Jerkass: Nighteye is most certainly not a very pleasant person. He's very dour and grouchy, and especially verbally and sometimes even physically harsh (the aforementioned tickling machine) to someone he feels doesn't live up to his high standards of what makes a Hero, especially with regards to the passing of One For All to Midoriya instead of his protege, Mirio Togata. In fact, the only reason he let Midoriya intern with him is to prove that Togata is the superior choice to inherit One For All, though he later changes his mind.
  • Lean and Mean: His lanky physique is usually played up to make him look more crotchety than he already is, and that's saying a lot.
  • Meaningful Name: "Mirai" means "future" in Japanese.
  • Mission Control: His role while he was All Might's sidekick can be summed up as this, while All Might was the one dishing out the dirt.
  • Specs of Awesome: He wouldn't be awesome without his glasses.
  • Super OCD: He chastises and smears Midoriya for a pretty much flawless All Might facial impression because is was only two millimeters off from the actual All Might.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: He has green hair with several yellow streaks, and his eyebrows are yellow.

Kaoruko Awata - Bubble Girl

Debut: Chapter 124 (Manga), Episode 63 (Anime)
Quirk: Bubble
Voiced by Rie Murakawa (Japanese), Kara Edwards (English dub)

A sidekick working under Sir Nighteye. Her Quirk, Bubble, allows her to produce bubbles from her body - bubbles that she can adorn with any sort of aroma that she's smelled in her life. They can pop with explosive force.

Bubble Girl exhibits the following tropes:
  • Age Lift: Her design came from a hero designing contest for fans. In Abara Chiita's original design, she was 16 and a student of U.A. In the manga proper, she is 21 and a sidekick of Sir Nighteye.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Along the lines of Ashido, she has blue skin and blue hair.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Justified. Her belly is completely revealed by her Hero costume, so that she could produce the bubbles she needs to use when doing Hero work.
  • Cool Mask: Given that some of the bubbles she produces can be filled with toxic fumes, she wears a transparent gas mask to protect herself.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Her main power consists of releasing bubbles from her body. As inoffensive and harmless as this all sounds, she can create exploding bubbles that disorient her enemies.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She has a very revealing Hero costume, but she isn't concerned with flaunting her looks and is very serious as a pro Hero.
  • Making a Splash: She can create bubbles out of her body, and is capable of selecting the smell of each bubble, using foul-smelling ones to incapacitate the enemies' senses.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kaoru" means "fragrance", relating to the fact that she can choose the smell of each of the bubbles she creates. "Awa" means "bubble", for obvious reasons.
  • Nice Shoes: She has some pretty fancy boots as part of her Hero costume.
  • Stripperiffic: Her Hero costume exposes as much of her skin as is possible without being indecent, akin to Midnight and Yaoyorozu.
  • Underboobs: Her top leaves the lower part of her breasts bared.
  • Weak but Skilled: She may have a rather inoffensive Quirk, but her usage of it puts her miles ahead of many other Heroes. The databook illustrates this fact by giving her a meager 1/6 in power, but a 4/6 in technique.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Parodied. The databook gives her an additional 1/6 in a category called "tickle resistance".
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: In line with her Color Motif, her hair is blue.

Other Villains

Major Independent Villains

Chizome Akaguro - "Hero Killer" Stain

Debut: Chapter 41 (Manga), Episode 24 (Anime)
Quirk: Bloodcurdle
Voiced by Go Inoue (Japanese), Robert McCollum (English dub)

A murderer and vigilante who hunts down heroes for sport. He believes that hero society has become too corrupt with greed for any genuine goodness to be present, and vows to hunt down those he deems to be "fake" with a vengeance. His Quirk, "Bloodcurdle", allows him to paralyze his victims once he gets a taste of their blood, making him a very dangerous foe. The caveat is that the time of paralysis is determined by blood type.

He's currently under police custody and imprisoned in Tartarus.

Stain provides examples of:
  • Arc Villain: He is the main antagonist of the titular "Hero Killer Arc".
  • Ax Crazy: Stain is unstable at best and seeming perpetually rancorous.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Kind of hard to picture his Quirk being used for any purpose other than evil, but he did at least try some time in his past.
  • Blood Knight: No pun intended. This is a man who relishes the prospect of a good fight, especially if it's against someone he deems worthy of his respect.
  • Blood Magic: His Quirk lets him paralyze a victim by tasting the victim's blood; some blood types are more vulnerable to it than others.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He condemns wanton murder, seeing it as a tainting on everyone who fights for what he believes to be genuine justice, and only hunts down people who use their heroism as a marketing ploy, or to hoard money.
  • Evil Virtues: Conviction, perseverance and resolve are some of his defining traits.
  • Fallen Hero: It turns out that he used to be an aspiring hero-in-training before his turn to villainy. What drove him over the edge was his overwhelming disenfranchisement with the system at large - a system that he believed fostered false heroes - and so he decided that those heroes need to be rooted out at every turn.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Kind of. He does have a fighting style based on his Quirk, but it's more his fighting style is based around enabling his Quirk, rather than simply using the Quirk itself.
  • Hero-Killer: By the time he's finally arrested, he's already killed 17 pro Heroes and injured 24 of them beyond recovery.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: As it turns out, he's not immune to his own power. When he's injured in such a way that he coughs up and tastes his own blood, his own powers turn against him and he's finally defeated.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: As is to be expected from a Japanese sword-wielder, he's armed with a Katana and several tanto-like daggers.
  • Knife Nut: As already mentioned, he has several daggers and, additionally, he has a few throwing knives.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Not only is he the first villain Midoriya and his friends face outside the school's "safety net", he introduces them to a grim reality that morality is rarely a simply matter of black and white.
  • Licking the Blade: His Quirk is based of tasting or ingesting the blood of his opponents. So he uses knifes and swords to gain access to their blood.
  • Logical Weakness: Against one person, his Quirk makes him nearly unbeatable once he inflicts a wound that draws blood. Against large groups, however, it's not as useful. Against two opponents his non-Quirk fighting skills can let him hold his own, but more than that and he can be overwhelmed quickly.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: He has no connection to the League of Villains, although he did, unfortunately, help them in the long-run.
  • Necessarily Evil: He doesn't exactly feel good about his own actions, but feels he must follow through with them for "the greater good".
  • Nineties Anti-Hero: Pretty much used as a way to compare that Trope to other types of heroes. Inverted in that he's a villain.
  • The Paralyzer: He paralyzes his opponents when he ingests their blood. The exact length of this paralysis is determined by blood type.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He's a vicious villain who wears a mostly black, sleeveless outfit complete with a crimson scarf.
  • Sanity Slippage: Is heavily implied to have lost his sanity from repeatedly being exposed to the injustices of society and being ignored by in large.
  • Self-Harm: The reason why he seems to have no nose? He's the one who cut it off.
  • Slasher Smile: When Midoriya comes to Ida's rescue and cites what to him resembles All Might's philosophy of self-sacrifice, Akaguro's whole face lights up with a bloodthirsty grin, in a mixture of a hunger for a good fight and respect.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: He wears nothing on his arms other than some non-medicinal bandaging.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: He sees potential in Midoriya of actually meeting what he believes are the true ideals of a hero.
  • Villainous Rescue: He saves Midoriya from a winged Nomu after having witnessed his selfless act of rescuing Ida.
