videogamedunkey is a gaming comedy channel on YouTube where an American guy plays popular, nostalgic and obscure video games with a foul mouth and a bad temper. His content included heavily edited playthroughs filled with with MSTs, satirical reviews and rants.
Dunkey (real name: Jason Gastrow) was first known as a League of Legends player. He officially stopped playing the game on September 12, 2015. [1]
- The Abridged Series: His recap series of the main Halo games, rife with references and jokes.
- Also his riff on Lego Star Wars.
- Accentuate the Negative
- Actor Allusion: In THE JONTRON RANT, footage of JonTron punching a guy dressed as the Kool-Aid Man is featured to make Jon look like a violent psycho (Played for Laughs, obviously). That guy is Ethan Klein of h3h3 Productions, who was the target of the rant Dunkey was satirizing.
- Anticlimax: In Top 100 Games, for the #1 spot, Dunkey chooses Zelda II: The Adventure of Link off a Wikipedia page. It's as lazy as it sounds.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking In Microsoft Sucks, Dunkey mentions Xbox Live, the Red Ring of Death, Windows 8 (which is barely mentioned), Games for Windows Live... and the purchase of 13 million $ worth of sand as arguments that Microsoft is made of ants.
- Berserk Button: Don't say to Dunkey he has anger issues.
- Big No: A Running Gag. Dunkey is very explosive with his outcries.
- Blatant Lies: Played for Laughs. Dunkey has the habit of lying through his teeth in his videos.
- For example, That "League of Legends 2" video? It's just an Adventure Time MOBA.
- Call Back: His History of Gaming video has "HERE COMES THE MONEEEY", a gag that appeared one time in his Game Dev Tycoon video.
- Calling Your Attacks: In one of his Hitman videos:
"This move I have is really cool, but DUNKEY ROLL but it's really, I have to say it really loud whenever I do it, so it's kind of risky doing it DUNKEY ROLL!" |
- Catch Phrase: "Not even close, babyyyyyy"
- "Uh oh..."
- "Seeya!"
- "Whoops! An accident!"
- "...into the ocean!"
- "YOU BITCH!"
- Deadpan Snarker
- Description Cut: A Running Gag in Dunkuza 3. Dunky acts like the lead, who is mourning a dead friend ("I'll avenge you!"). Cut to the lead doing completely unrelated mini-games and Dunkey reacting to the gameplay.
- In Best Video Game Music, when criticizing a Street Fighter rap song:
- Documentary of Lies: Played for Laughs. THE JONTRON RANT is a masterful satire of Leafy's rant to h3h3, cherrypicking footage to make JonTron look like a psychopathic hating hypocrite.
- Dramatic Reading: Click is Dunkey reading reviews of the film on Amazon.
- Early Installment Weirdness: Compared to his The Old Republic playthrough and his 2011 review of L.A. Noire, with the monotone voice and straightforward content, Dunkey has really grown as a comedian and an editor, as shown in Youtubers and Microsoft Sucks.
- Funny Animal: His avatar is an anthropomorphized donkey.
- Fun with Subtitles/Freeze-Frame Bonus): In the subtitles for THE JONTRON RANT, sounds are labeled, including *EERIE SOUND*, *LOUD THROW*... and *KOOL-AID PUKE*.
- Internet Backdraft/Mood Whiplash: Dunkey, in Microsoft Sucks tells the time when he got Xbox Live at 12 years old, played Return to Castle Wolfenstein and greeted the players: "Hey guys! Let's go win the game, dude!" And then angry fat gamers started heavily insulting him (while intense rock music is playing). His reaction?
"This is amazing." |
- Large Ham: Dunkey when's he's wacky or angry.
- In Youtubers, he mixes many gaming youtubers' intros to make a cacophonous mess. Then Jacksepticeye pops up and can be heard, even amidst all the other players, as noted by Dunkey.
- Magical Native American: Parodied in Batman Beyond : Return of Green Goblin:
"White people do not know how to work horses. They have become weak, like the water buffalo; weak from their lives of luxury." |
- Milestone Celebration: In the early days, Dunkey had a tendency to make a special video every 10k or 100k subscribers. For example, his 800k subs video of Rust.
- No Indoor Voice
- Never Trust a Trailer: In Die, fight scenes from trailers for big budget games (Diablo 3, WoW, Starcraft II) are shown. Cut to Dunky playing the games in question, with very underwhelming combat, and him repeating "Die" or on-the-spot banter.
- Overly Long Gag: Nico My Caasin is Here is a minute of Dunky (for the most part) repeating the title as Roman, Nico and "Mammary" to each other.
Dunkey: Number Eight! |
- Pop Cultural Osmosis Failure: In Dos X: Rise of Robocop, Dunkey witnesses a conversation between a guy who remembers RoboCop and another guy who doesn't get it. Dunkey then barges in:
"I gotta tell em! It's Robocop, it's Robocop, the movie's Robocop." |
- Reference Overdosed
- Refuge in Audacity: The only reason Dunkey gets away with his jokes.
- Rule of Funny: In GTA Online:
"Suspect has left the vehicle, I will pursue him in my yellow Bumblebee car and run him over, because that's funny." |
- Running Gag:
- "Spaghetti 'a meatball"
- Putting Super Mario Bros 2 as #1 in unrelated video game lists.
- In Sleepy Dogs, a riff on Sleeping Dogs, "Another day, another dolla'!" and him beating the shit out of conversing women in extreme anger.
- In Game Dev Tycoon: "I'm a millionaire! I'm a fuckin' millionaire!"
- "It's a masterpiece! I'm a genius!"
- A bunch of critically acclaimed games he reviews (ones he has no problems with) end up getting a 0 out of 5.
- Serial Escalation: Captcha is a satire on its security measures, as Dunkey experiences various absurd, complex and infuriating capthas to avert a nuclear crisis, all with a timer. It goes as far as making him play Dark Souls and painting a pixel-perfect recreation of the Mona Lisa with the toolset of MS Paint (He half-asses it and calls it a masterpiece. It works.)
- Shout-Out:
- In Halo : Recap Evolved: "Hey I'm Dunk, I'm not so Dunk, and we're the Game Dunks!"
- Also referenced in the sequel.
- In Halo 4 : Recap Rebooted, after a crash landing, Master Chief recites Buzz Lightyear's first lines from Toy Story.
- Arbiter repeating "I'm Mega Man!"
- The thumbnail for Batman Beyond : Return of Green Goblin, in reality a playthrough of Beyond Two Souls, has "JUNO 2" next to Jodie (played by Ellen Page).
- In the description for Kanye Quest:
- In Halo : Recap Evolved: "Hey I'm Dunk, I'm not so Dunk, and we're the Game Dunks!"
- The ending of Mario Kart Wii: Hitler's Reign is the final shots of "Crawl Space" from Breaking Bad.
- In Microsoft Sucks, the proof that Dreamworks (and Microsoft) are made of ants? Dreamwork's first movie... was Antz.
- The description of Star Wars : Attack of the Dentist quotes a line from Parks and Recreation.
- In Jazzpunk, Dunkey calls the game "Daft Punk"
- In Sleepy Dogs:
- Dunkey referring to the game as Shenmue 3
- When the game wastes time on the lead washing his hands:
- "My God, it really is Shenmue 3."
- When the game wastes time on the lead washing his hands:
- "WHERE'S THE TRIGGER!!?"
- Dunkey referring to the game as Shenmue 3
- In Postal 2 : Coleman's Reign:
- Dunky paraphrasing one Steam user's gift message as "Dunky, you're my biggest deputy"
- In Batman Beyond : Return of Green Goblin (a playthrough of Beyond: Two Souls) After an emotional scene with the protagonist as a child and her mother leaving her, a scientist (played by Wilhem Dafoe) comes up to the little girl. But then:
- Dunky: (As the scientist) Me and you can rule this city, Spider-Man! Or we can just fight to the death!
- In Masters of CS:Go, Dunkey is impersonating Larry the Cable Guy sarcastically, with obscure references to the guy's product placements. Some players are even fooled by his voice.
- In CS GO: Source, Dunkey refers to himself (even with a R2D2 avatar) as Bowser from Sonic.
- Dunkey playing with the name Carlton Banks, with footage from the character dancing in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air playing between kills.
- In CS GO: Rip King, a chiptune cover of The Flintstones theme song plays.
- During "Real Talk with Dr. Love", footage of Ethan and Hila reacting plays while a player fools a younger one by talking about girls cumming.
- In Dishonored (Mission 1) : Perfect Run, he names the first mission "spooky Luigi's Mansion".
- Take That: Dunkey is a very abrasive person and will dish out potshots whenever he wants to.
- Behind the Dunk is a parody of TechFlamer videos.
- His JONTRON RANT is a satirical take-down of Leafy's biased rant on h3h3 Productions using JonTron to paint him as the devil controlled by a sinister force.
- Youtubers at UberDanger's PUA times.
- Making edits to compare between his videos and a plagiarizing channel, splicing it with footage from a content creator at Comic-Con saying as advice to be their own self.
- Featuring PewDiePie, Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and others to display loud and derivative content.
- Troll: Dunkey is well-known for playing with players' minds.
- In H1Z1:
Dunkey: (Pointing a gun to a player) "Gimme your pants." |
- What Do You Mean It's Not Didactic?: In Click, Dunkey found a lengthy review analysis of the Adam Sandler movie on Amazon:
"Jesus Christ, this guy fucking dissected the entire movie of Click. This is like a professional film thesis.. on Click." |
- What If: In Game Dev Tycoon, Dunkey, dissatisfied with the lackluster commercial performance of his games, makes the closest thing to Call of Duty in-game and names it that. It becomes a critical failure.
- ↑ Causes include getting a temp ban from the game due to "toxic behavior" (shit-talking), something he disagrees with by principle, and being fed up with his lack of enjoyment in the game.
