Evangelion Gear

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Evangelion Gear is a fanfiction written by Snafu the Great which combines both the universes of Metal Gear and Neon Genesis Evangelion into a single world.

The plot follows the newly reformed Patriots led by Big Boss, who discover Seele's plans for Third Impact and set out to put a stop to it. Along the way Big Boss encounters Shinji Ikari, who is isolated, and depressed. He soon befriends him, and teaches him Close Quarters Combat, and how to defend himself against the Red Devil that he calls Asuka.

During this time an all out war begins to brew between Seele, The Patriots, and Gendo Ikari, [1] which comes to a head by the end of things.

Be warned though, there are a few typos here and there, however, this isn't a huge problem, considering how damn cool the story is.

Considering this is a story based on both Metal Gear and Evangelion there are bound to be tons of spoilers before. You have been warned.

You can read it here.

Tropes used in Evangelion Gear include:
  • Alternate Ending: There are two instances where the author shows how certain scenes would have played out differently, if certain events had transpired in different ways. Both end the same, however.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Happens when Raiden shows up and cuts off Gendo's arm to prevent him from starting Third Impact.
  • Axes At School: Shinji brings Misato's gun to school, and plans to execute Asuka and Rei, and shoot up the rest of the class before ultimately killing himself. He ultimately doesn't go through with it however. Except in the alternate ending.
  • Babies Ever After: Shinji and Rei have a daughter named Aya Yui Ikari fourteen years after The Battle For Humanity. A few other characters also end up having children.
  • Baka: Hmm, I wonder who says this?[context?]
  • Big Bad: Keel Lorenz, and to a lesser extent, Gendo Ikari.
  • Big Book of War: The Art of War, a favorite of Big Boss which he encourages Shinji to read.
  • Boom! Headshot!: In the Alternative Ending, Shinji kills Rei with a bullet to the head.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Gendo pissing his pants.
  • Broken Ace: Asuka, obviously. Even more so than usual.
  • Brother-Sister Incest: Averted, with Shinji and Rei. In this continuity Rei's DNA is 1% Yui, 1% Lilith, and 98% some unknown woman.
  • Burn, Baby, Burn: Big Boss ignites Zero's hideout after killing him.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Let's see... It's Shinji with a ton more confidence, and killer moves. So yeah, this was inevitable.
  • Clean Cut: Subverted when Raiden cuts off Gendo's arm. It's mentioned that it was cut off rather crudely.
  • Continuity Nod: Plenty, two that come to mind are Snake's bandana giving him infinite ammo, and Asuka's eye getting injured, while she screams, "I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you all".
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Anytime Metal Gear Ray takes on an Angel or EVA, and whenever Asuka gets into a fight with Shinji. Also happens when Asuka takes on two Metal Gear Rays at once in her advanced Evangelion Unit.
  • Darker and Edgier: Gendo is even more of a heartless bastard than usual in this fic.
  • Determinator: Asuka. Dear God, ASUKA!
  • Devoted to You: Gendo to Yui. He doesn't actually love her though. He's merely obsessed with her, as confirmed by Ritsko and Shinji.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Kaworu Nagisa, who is killed early on after Metal Gear Ray drops an N2 mine on him.
  • Driven to Suicide: Shinji, in the early chapters. As well as Asuka, who ultimately kills herself while in the mental institute.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Misato, which comes in hand when she's forced to drive through Tokyo-3 with Snake, Meryl, Shinji, and Pen-Pen, while they try and escape the FROGS.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Everyone, including his classmates turn against Shinji after the fiasco involving the Dummy Plug and Bardiel. And it later happens to Asuka, when the truth comes out about her part in the same battle.
  • Evil Old Folks: Keel, who is at least 106 during the events of the story.
  • Eye Scream: Poor Asuka...
  • Face Death with Dignity: Kaworu, when he realizes he can't escape the N2 mine.
  • Face Heel Turn: Asuka, eventually pilots for Seele.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Asuka, after she lies about what really happened during the battle with Bardiel.
  • Fearful Symmetry: Shinji and Asuka, when they fight hand to hand during their Final Battle.
  • Flaw Exploitation: The Patriots know that Seele was trying listening to them. So Big Boss had Otacon and Mei Ling send out false information, 'causing Seele to bomb the wrong location.
  • First-Name Basis: Rei always calls Shinji by his last name, Ikari. However, she uses this trope to her advantage, calling him "Shinji" when she's needs to get his attention. She later starts calling him by his first name when the two become more friendly around each other.
  • First Kiss: Rei kisses Shinji on the cheek after he wakes up from his coma, signaling the change in their relationship.
  • Four-Star Badass: Big Boss, of course.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Big Boss, mirroring his death in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
  • The Grovel: Done when Rei apologizes to Shinj by exposing the truth about Asuka, causing the entire school to turn against her.
  • Happily Married: Big Boss and Eva before she died. Also, Shinji and Rei... eventually.
  • Healing Factor: Rei's Angel DNA allowed her body to repair her womb, allowing her to have children.
  • "Hey You!" Haymaker: Shinji to Asuka during the Battle for Tokyo-3.

Shinji: Hey, Sohryuu! (smacks Asuka with RAY'S flipper)

  • Holding Hands: Shinji finds Rei holding his hand after he wakes up from his coma. It turns out she'd been with him for three days.
  • I'll Kill You!: Repeatedly said by Asuka. Also counts as a Continuity Nod.
  • Immortality Immorality: How Big Boss sees Keel's goals. While Keel claims he's trying to unite the world, Big Boss thinks he doesn't care about anyone else, and merely wants to live forever.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Yui Ikari.
  • Insane Equals Violent: Asuka, who else?
  • It Has Been an Honor: Said by Ocelot to Big Boss as he dies from the wounds he received defending Tokyo-3.
  • The Last Dance: Big Boss' final mission, stopping Third Impact, turns out to be this, as it is revealed in the end that he was dying of cancer.
  • Leave Him to Me: The reason Asuka agreed to help Seele was only under the condition that she be allowed to defeat Shinji, proving her superiority once and for all.
  • Karma Houdini: The therapist who who uses Asuka sexually, causing her to commit suicide.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Some scenes are written as if the story is actually a Metal Gear Solid game that the reader happens to be playing/watching.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: The three next-gen RAYs use this to destroy and kill en masse.
  • Master of Disguise: Naomi Hunter, which she uses to her advantage when she uses Octopus' gear to disguise herself as Ritsuko before destroying the Dummy System.
  • Meaningful Echo: Many. Many.
  • Melee a Trois: Gendo vs. Seele vs. The Patriots.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Happens to most of the characters in the alternate endings.
  • Name's the Same: You have Eva, one of the founders of the Patriots, and Big Boss' lover, and you have the EVAs, the weapons built to fight the Angels.
  • New Year Has Come: New Year's Day rolls around right after the world is saved, and just after Shinji wakes up from his coma.
  • Oh Crap: The moment Zero realizes that there's no escaping Big Boss.
    • Kaworu when the RAY drops an N2 mine in front of him. Yeah, he knows he's boned.
    • Asuka, when the class finds out about the truth regarding Bardiel.
    • Ritsuko, upon finding out that General Hayter is Big Boss, and that Naomi is a Patriots mole.
    • Everyone working for NERV in the Alternate Endings when they realize that they can's stop Third Impact.
  • Older Than They Look: Averted with Snake. Unlike in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, here he isn't suffering from advanced aging. Played straight at the end however, despite being only fourteen years since The Battle For Humanity, Snake looks quite old, a lot like his MGS4 counterpart. This is especially true in contrast to Meryl, who still looks quite young, despite being in her forties.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: When Shinji wakes up from his coma, he discovers the locket his mother gave jm during his dream in his hands.
  • Out-Gambitted: The Patriots are constantly one step ahead of Seele. That's not to say that Seele doesn't have a few surprises of their own, though.
  • Pair the Spares: In the final chapter nearly everyone gets paired up with someone.
  • The Reveal: It turns out that the founder of the Patriots, and the founder of Seele are one and the same. Keel Lorez, better known as as Major Zero!
  • The Siege: Nerv, the Patriots, and the JSSDF try to hold their own as Seele invades the Geofront, using the FROGS and Asuka piloting an advanced EVA to do so.
  • Shipped in Shackles: Asuka, as she's sentenced to spend the rest of her life in an insane asylum.
  • Shout-Out: A lot.
  • Single Tear: Shinji sheds only one tear when Yui gives him the locket containing a picture of her with 4-year-old Shinji inside.
  • The Sociopath: Asuka.
  • The Stoic: Shinji becomes this for a while, after meeting Big Boss, with a little bit of Jerkass Woobie mixed in for good measure.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: With EVAs, Angels, and Metal Gears running around, this was inevitable.
  • There Are No Therapists: Averted with the arrival of one Dr. Naomi Hunter to Nerv.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: The way that Gendo goes out. Big Boss himself admits to using over kill when he took out Kaworu.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Gendou has nothing on Big Boss.
  • Together in Death: Big Boss and Eva.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Shinji after learning CQC. Asuka as well, but only after she's recruited by Seele.
  • The Unfettered: Keel Lorenz.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Keel's plans to "unite" the world through Instrumentality.
  • Where Are They Now? Epilogue: The last chapter is this.
  • Utopia: The world becomes this sometime after the events of the story.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After being used by Nerv, Seele, and being sentenced to a life in a mental hospital things couldn't possibly get worse for Asuka. She'll at least get the help she needs right? Nope! She basically becomes a Sex Slave for her therapist, and then kills herself a year later when she finds out he didn't love her....
  1. As well as the Angels, however, they aren't a huge problem.
