Rise is an Original Character Tournament hosted by Mr-Tea-and-Crumpets along with a group of five judges. The story is about how a Rift opened in the core of Kinvar, and how a being called 'E' sent the NPC Mr.Inverted all around the universe to find the 32 competitors that will battle (and race) through the tournament to get a wish to fix that Rift in the way they want, getting to change the Universe if they want to. Sometimes Mr.Inverted got accompained by another of the guardians (Ms.Jury, Mr.Henderson and Mr.Kite).

Rise had several factors setting it apart from the pack - the rounds were alternating vehicular challenges and on-foot battles, the competitors had to be an alien (a small percentage of humans and robots were allowed) and the tournament would take a Double Elimination format, meaning you had to lose twice to truly be out of the competition. After Round 6, the winner of the Upper Bracket would have the chance to get directly to the finals if they won, meaning Round 7 would be a 1vs1 semifinals.

The tournament opened auditions on April 2009 and Round 1 began on September 2009 with 32 competitors (called Risers by themselves), choosen out of the 111 auditioners by a group of five judges. The finalists, someguy0203 and LimeInDaCoconut against CrowbarTK-Hullo, finished their final entries on November 23, 2010. Crowbar TK-Hullo was announced as the winner on February 7, 2011, to very little fanfare and a lot of disagreement from spectators.

General Tropes

  • A Million Is a Statistic - Many, many people are killed at the end of Round 6, but what causes the tears? The death of a sidekick.
  • Action Girl - Most female contestants, such as Veera, Starcrosser, and Rosemary. Also tagalongs such as Pilot Gal and Mia (later on).
  • Amazing Technicolor Battlefield - Where both of the finalists' entries are set, mainly due to that all the conventional battlefields have been made unavailable.
  • Artificial Gravity - Traveller uses this, in conjunction with spinning tiers. The redesigned Protos has it, but Bungalow's ship lacks it.
  • Big Bad - A handful of contestants have their own coming after them. Mr. A may have been supposed to be one.
  • Bloodier and Gorier as the rounds go on. Curiously, no one seems willing to kill their opponent for real. Yet.
  • Character Alignment - All of them.
  • Defeat Means Friendship - Happens with most of the good characters, such as Mahrko and Areim.
  • Furry Comic - Many 'aliens' are anthro animals or otherwise furry. Notably, the native Kinvarians are frogs, and Mahrko is a purple giraffe.
  • Gadgeteer Genius - several, given that each contestant has a custom vehicle. Of sorts.
  • Grand Theft Me - All of round 4- all contestants swap bodies- it was a mess.
  • Heroic Build - Averted; most of the contestants are thin and lanky. Moose has too much muscle.
  • Horrible Judge of Character - Leads to Inverted's poor choice of contestants.
  • In Their Own Image - The act of closing the rift allows the winner to redefine the universe as he sees fit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold - Veld, Ivan Jury, and later on Obb.
  • Mohs Scale of Sci Fi Hardness - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay at the low end.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero - If only Inverted had screened the call.
  • Nightmare Sequence - A few characters like Veera and Mahrko get heavy doses of these in their entries. Obb gets a taste of this himself.
  • Only One Name - Most contestants and NPCs.
  • Parental Abandonment - Mahrko, Stylx, Zuciel, and Clown all have seriously troubled, parentless childhoods.
  • Schedule Slip - Less than half the competitors completed their entries on time for Round 6, despite having 6 weeks to do it.
    • The final round initially was to be 12 weeks long. The finalists asked for another 3 weeks anyways.
    • Mr-Tea-And-Crumpets has really come to hate giving out extensions. He's still looking for one word to describe the magnitude of his hatred.
  • Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale - Traveller was supposed to have the mass of a moon, though some depictions sized it down. Serpe's capital ship is stated to be 'moon-sized.' Where do they get the mass for these?!
    • Not to mention that Veera's skimmer can pop over to the next planet in 2 panels.
  • Space Station - Traveller, in orbit around Kinvar.
  • Square-Cube Law - Obeyed in some instances, ignored in others.
  • Stealth in Space - Said moon-sized ship manages to stay cloaked NEXT DOOR to Traveller for most of the tournament's duration.
  • Trigger - practically everyone has one of these. Obvious physical ones are Mahrko's tail, and Clown's emotion pully.

  • Action Girl - Pilot Gal
  • Amazing Technicolor Battlefield - Round 8, but the trip getting there is trippier than the actual field.
  • Appendage Assimilation - Bungalow Forrester took Areim's eyes and changed them up into lenses for his own eyes.
  • Artificial Gravity - Bungalow's ship has or used to have this ability, but ceased using it when the crew became the ship.
  • Bishonen Line - Forrester crosses this in Round 8.
  • Body Horror - The Transformation Sequence in Round 5, and what must have happened to Ferudaeran before the tournament began.
  • Came Back Strong - Round 4.
  • The Chessmaster - Bungalow Forrester becomes this in the latter half of the tournament.
  • Colony Drop - Forrester gets the citizens of Traveller to do this to themselves in Round 7
  • The Corruption - Bungalow's drones easily infect mechanical and biological structures.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him - Irais at the end of Round 6. Also like 2/3 the other fighters between that round and 7.
  • Full-Frontal Assault - Forrester, all the time. Luckily, he has no dangly parts.
  • Godiva Hair - Koo Li Tien in Round 8.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy - Despite that most depictions show the Guardians in a very active role, Crowbar TK-Hullo makes them conspicuously absent when shit hits the fans of both Kinvar and Traveller. E, the personification of the universe, has only appeared once in her entries.
    • This may be do to her slightly more destructive depiction of Kite, who is shown thoroughly enjoying the shit-fan-collision events, and prevents Inverted from doing anything to stop it.
  • High Octane Nightmare Fuel - A few examples.
    • In round 6, Areim is penetrated by many root-tentacle hybrids, which go up from his throat, out the mouth and push his eyeballs out from within the skull.
    • In round 7, Veera is thrown into space without self-propulsion, but has a life support suit. Presumably, she'll be in orbit around Kinvar until the suit's power runs out, which, given the K'takzyl's tech level, won't be for a long while.
  • Hive Mind - Bungalow, Bungalow, and Bungalow, later joined by Mick, Xozault, Ivan, a Xenon kid named Azalea, and a slew of Traveller's inhabitants.
  • Humongous Mecha - the ship turns into one in Round 7.
  • I Reject Your Reality - Most competitors chose to accept the winners' entry as canon when they were demoted to the lower tier. Crowbar TK-Hullo refused to accept Riyami's entry as canon when she lost in Round 2.
  • In Space Everyone Can See Your Face - Veera and Pilot Gal's space helmets. However, Veera's becomes polarized when the S3 systems (AKA shiney stabby tentacles of death) take over against Forrester in Round 7.
  • Loophole Abuse - The one rule of the tourney, up to round 6, is that you can't kill your opponent. Bungalow Forrester pushes this rule as much as he can from the start.
  • Made of Plasticine - Forrester easily tears off his own arm in Round 5.
  • The Napoleon - Bungalow Forrester is about a foot shorter than most of his opponents. He gains a foot in height for the final round... then is pitted against the 7'5" Mahrko.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye - Areim to Irais. The grief is compounded by that their culture's funerals involve summoning and talking to the spirit of the deceased.
  • No Name Given - Despite appearing in most rounds, Pilot Gal has not been given a name. This is because Crowbar TK-Hullo has not thought of one.
    • Supposedly, she has, but is keeping it under wraps.
  • One-Winged Angel - Mecha Bungalow, arguably.
  • Orifice Invasion - Bungalow Forrester to Ivan, Round 7.
    • And to many others as early as Round 5.
  • Puppeteer Parasite - A variant of Bungalow's drones can take root in people's bodies and add them to the Hive Mind.
  • Seen It All - Bungalow Forrester was type two, before The Virus turned him to what he is presently. He's still seen it all, but now he sees it differently.
  • Square-Cube Law - Obeyed; the Humongous Mecha falls and can't get up when in a gravity field.
  • Stat-O-Vision - Used in the second part of the final round, through the big Bungalow's point-of-view.
  • Villain Protagonist - Bungalow Forrester.
  • Was Once a Man - Bungalow Forrester.
    • His ship was once completely mechanical.

  • All-Encompassing Mantle - Starcrosser's cape acts this way. Overlaps with Superheroes Wear Capes.
  • Big Eater - Starcrosser, aggain thanks to the always-hungry parasite.
  • Clothing Damage - Starcrosser's costume becomes more and more damaged (and repaired in a rather rushed manner) as the contest goes on until she is forced to accept a new one from the judges.
  • Clark Kent Outfit - Starcrosser is the only one of her race on the planet, yet hardly anyone realised the rather curvy red alien was infact the heroic Starcrosser (again who was the "only other" example of her race). This is somewhat subverted as Veera saw through the costume with little effort, only comfirming it with a DNA scan.
  • Cursed with Awesome - Being a 50 foot tall Flying Brick comes at the cost of an eternally hungry parasite living in Starcrosser's gut.
  • Most Common Superpower - Star's a bit lacking.
  • Puppeteer Parasite - Under the right circumstances, the World Eater Parasite can completely control Starcrosser.
  • Superhero - Starcrosser
  • Square-Cube Law - Played with. Starcrosser has no problem functioning when at many metres of height, however she requires more energy (and food for the parasite) the more she grows.

  • Dark Is Not Evil - Hobby.
  • Fauxshadow - Hobby has always been shown in the shadows, seemingly watching over Obb and even mocking Obb for his failure in his dreams, almost along the same lines as Serpe with the implication that he has some control over Obb. It turns out Hobby was just a parasite inside Obb and is basically his guardian angel whenever Capritia isn't around.
  • Fourth Wall Portrait / Painting the Fourth Wall - Inverted with Gust in the 3rd Round, when he surprised Obb with an oddly simplistic drawing of Gust himself...which looks just like the style that Gust was drawn in by the artist of Obb's 2nd Round opponent.
  • Freudian Excuse - Invoked by Hobby during Obb's 3rd Round.
  • Heroic Sociopath - Obb starts out as this, going out of his way to harm an unconscious opponent he raced against in the 1st round.
  • Horrible Judge of Character - Gust vouches for Obb so the latter can join the Rise tourney, in spite of Obb taking out Gust's guardian Dlaigo just a minute earlier, on the sole basis that Obb knows Gust's father and is supposedly his friend.
  • Goggles Do Nothing - Subverted with Obb. Even though he wears his goggles over his forehead, the audition shows his aunt Capritia (who's of the same species) bearing another pair of eyes of the insect kind right above her regular, dark eyes. As for the suspenders, well...maybe he can't keep his trunks up without them?
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom - Played straight with Hobby.
  • Jerkass - Capritia (Obb's aunt) and later Hobby make it clear that Obb is not a nice guy.
  • Jerkass Woobie - Arguably Obb, as it's heavily implied the constant wars on his homeplanet had affected him deeper than he wished to admit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold - Obb turns into one.
  • Made of Iron - Obb in the 3rd Round.
  • Morality Chain - Capritia and Hobby are this to Obb. Or at least they're trying to be.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished - Obb both invokes and plays straight with this in the 3rd round.
  • Noodle Incident - Obb doesn't disclose why he hates Cedor so much or what Cedor did to him.
  • Nonhumans Lack Attributes - Capritia is shown to be covered partly in carapace over her body, so she doesn't need clothes. Obb wears them because he supposedly ripped off most of his carapace (which supposedly males have in greater proportion compared to females) to give himself Training from Hell and implies he feels rather naked as a result. Not that Obb wouldn't wear his boxing clothes if he had a choice, given his boxing obsession.
  • Monocle - Hobby.
  • Pet the Dog - In the 3rd round, Obb gets this by breaking his opponent Gearbox out of a glass mountain...with unfortunate consequences. Obb later on helps train Gearbox become a better fighter in the 4th Round.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy - All their characters.
  • Puppeteer Parasite - Hobby turns out to be this for Obb.
  • Real Men Wear Pink - Exaggerated with Obb, since his flesh is pink.
  • Red Boxing Gloves - Averted with Obb's black boxing gloves and The Rival Dlaigo's white gloves. Played straight with his Tagalong Kid Gust.
  • Screening the Call - Played straight to the extreme when Obb does this to Dlaigo for the audition into the Rise tourney by stunning him with an electric bubble net.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics - Averted with Capritia as she doesn't wear any clothing save for the orange scarf. Inverted with Obb with his dark boxing clothes contrasting against his pink flesh.
  • The Conscience - Hobby to Obb. Arguably somewhat subverted and played straight to the extreme, since Obb isn't inclined to do good even with said person, but he can be forced to do so if necessary.
  • Tough Love - Justified when Capritia explains that Obb didn't respond well to casual affection in the past, so she's forced to adopt this in hopes of straightening him out.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene - Arguably Obb, as he has suspender-like straps holding up some black leather layers covering up his midriff.
  • What the Hell, Hero? - Obb gets chewed out by Hobby for his sociopathic behavior.
