Main Characters
Juliet Starling
Voiced by: Youko Hikasa (JP - Xbox 360), Eri Kitamura (JP - Play Station 3), Tara Strong (EN)
Our protagonist, a cheerleader at San Romero High School who doubles as a professional zombie hunter. Juliet wakes up on her 18th birthday to find her school overrun with zombies. With her chainsaw, and the support of her zombie-hunting family and the still-living decapitated head of her boyfriend Nick, she sets out to stop the zombie apocalypse from totally ruining her birthday.
- Action Girl
- Anguished Declaration of Love: Right before cutting off Nick's head, and again before his Heroic Sacrifice to defeat Killabilly.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: She often interferes with the files captions the way Deadpool is notorious for. Also, if the player tries to look up her skirt, she puts the chainsaw down, gives him a rude look, and covers herself.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: Juliet acts like a typical ditzy teenager, but is very, very good at fighting zombies and planning out ways to do it.
- Cameo: Makes one in Killer is Dead.
- Chainsaw Good
- Cosplay: Some of her costumes were based on anime that were popular when the game was released. One is a gender-swapped version of Ash William's outfit from Evil Dead 2.
- The Ditz
- Genki Girl
- Girlish Pigtails
- Hidden Depths: She may think it's totally cool that she has a decapitated head for a boyfriend, but if her Dream Sequence at the start of Stage 3 is to be believed, she fears that he'd rather become a zombie than continue living as just a head.
- A Love to Dismember: With Nick's head, with the twist that he's still alive.
- Martial Arts and Crafts: Juliet utilizes her cheerleading chops as a branching series of quick, light, set-up combos.
- Ms. Fanservice
- Mini-Dress of Power
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Killing all five Dark Purveyors only completed Swan's ritual.
- Sweet Tooth: For lollipops, which also restore her health.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Lollipops, of course, but among them, her favorite is strawberry flavor.
- Unwitting Pawn: Swan even calls her his "pawn" in his plan.
- Zettai Ryouki: Juliet's got to be rocking at least a type A between the miniskirt and leggings.
Nick Carlyle
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (JP), Michael Rosenbaum (EN)
Juliet's boyfriend. 18 years old. After he gets bitten by a zombie, Juliet decapitates him in a desperate attempt to keep him from turning. His still-living head is kept on Juliet's person to give her emotional support whenever he's not lamenting his current situation. He can also take control of headless zombies for a short while thanks to Juliet's magic.
- Back from the Dead: His reward for making a Heroic Sacrifice to save the world, in addition to getting back a body...even if it is Morikawa's body.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Death Seeker: YMMV on how serious he is about it, but he does openly request Cordelia to put a bullet in his head.
- Heroic Sacrifice: He allows his head to be attached to Swan's headless body to stop Killabilly's heart and destroy him.
- I Will Only Slow You Down: Says this in verbatim at the start of Stage 5 once the pressure of losing his body starts to get to him.
- Losing Your Head
- Only Sane Man
- Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Once he is resurrected with his head permanently attached to Morikawa's body due to a cosmic mix-up (not that he minds).
Starling Family and Friends
Cordelia Starling
Voiced by: Mayumi Asano (JP), Linda Cardellini (EN)
Juliet's big sister. 20 years old. A real crack shot with a sniper rifle.
- Action Girl
- Cool Big Sis: Literally, to Juliet and Rosalind
- Professional Killer: Maybe. The prologue suggests her zombie hunting is done on behalf of a government agency.
- Sniper Rifle
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to both her sisters, but particularly Rosalind.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Quesadillas, according to her profile.
Rosalind Starling
Voiced by: Mariya Ise (JP), Kimberly Brooks (EN)
Juliet's little sister. 16 years old. Obsessed with driving vehicles of every sort, but totally lacks the expertise.
- Action Girl: Mostly an Informed Ability; she's clearly not as skilled as her older siblings.
- Car Fu: In Stage 6, she commanders a wrecking ball and tries to help Juliet with it. Unfortunately, this proves far more a hazard to Juliet than the zombies. Juliet remarks that Rosalind had wanted a wrecking ball for Christmas, and "this proves she should never have one!"
- Damsel in Distress: In most of Stage 3 and 4.
- Drives Like Crazy: Juliet thinks the DMV is a bunch of idiots for giving Rosalind a license.
- Genki Girl
- OOC Is Serious Business: When she starts driving well and claims she repaired the bus, Juliet realizes she's been brainwashed.
- Yandere: Potentially, as her secret dream is to meet Justin Bieber and add his skull to her collection.
Gideon Starling, a.k.a. "Dad"
Voiced by: Joji Nakata (JP), Gregg Henry (EN)
Juliet's dad. 44 years old.
- Badass Biker: And he's got a Cool Bike too.
- Cool Old Guy
- Heroic Sacrifice: Drives a motorcycle rigged with dynamite into Killabilly's face to allow Juliet to enter his body and kill him. How he managed to survive is beyond reason.
- Elvis Impersonator: Not explicitly stated, but it's obvious.
- Good Old Fashioned Fisticuffs: This guy doesn't need any weapon except his bare hands.
- In a Single Bound: He's able to scale buildings far faster than any normal man should be able to.
- Manly Tears: Said to cry any time he sees a dog die on TV. See also Tears of Joy.
- Overprotective Dad
- Papa Wolf
- Rube Goldberg Hates Your Guts: Heroic example, as he rigs together a rather long one out of junk and scrap metal to crush a mob of zombies.
- So Proud of You
- Stacy's Mom: Male example, as Juliet remarks how many of her friends swoon over him. However, undeath turns this affection into Perverse Sexual Lust, with at least one zombie student yelling, "Let me fuck your father!"
- Tears of Joy: "My little girl is a tactical genius!"
- Trademark Favorite Food: Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, according to his file.
Mom
Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue (JP), Vanessa Marshall (EN)
Juliet's mom.
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: You can tell from Juliet's face when she calls.
- Bit Character: Only appears in person at the ending.
- Face Monster Turn: If you get the Bad Ending.
- Locked Out of the Loop: She seems to have no idea the rest of her family is into zombie hunting.
- Skewed Priorities: She frequently calls her daughter to ask questions about her party or just to say she loves her. Getting them all is required for an achievement.
Junji Morikawa
Voiced by: Bin Shimada (JP), Bruce Locke (EN)
Juliet's sensei in the art of zombie-slaying.
- Ascended to A Higher Plane of Existence
- Badass Grandpa
- Chef of Iron: His "day job" is a sushi chef, and he can kill zombies with kitchen knives.
- Dirty Old Man
- Sacrificial Lamb
Swan and Dark Purveyors
Tropes that Apply to All of Them
- Musical Assassin: Each represents a specific genre, but all are merciless killers
- Obviously Evil
- Omnicidal Maniac
- Ominous Latin Chanting: Win a Boss Battle, and the defeated foe chants "Meus Vita, Rege, pro nefario coepto!" This means, "My life, O King, for your evil plan!", a hint that this is part of Swan's larger plan.
- Sequential Boss: The Boss Battles with each follow a common pattern. Reducing their Life Bars to zero weakens them, requiring Juliet to apply a finisher, which the player applies via Button Mashing. However, this leads to a new stage of the battle where Juliet has to do it again. Lewis is a four-stage fight, Josey is two-stage, and everyone else is three.
- Turns Red: Each of them have attacks that become more lethal the more they're hurt.
- Undying Loyalty: They know Swan's plan, and they're fine with it.
Swan
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (JP), Sean Gunn (EN)
The main antagonist, an emo goth student at San Romero who starts a zombie apocalypse to get even with the world that made his life a living hell.
- Ambiguously Human: Whether he's undead himself or still human is up for debate. He clearly doesn't look human anymore.
- Big Bad
- Disproportionate Restitution: He starts a Zombie Apocalypse because he was bullied by classmates and Juliet rejected him, even though it's implied he never actually spoke to her.
- Driven to Suicide: After revealing his true plan, he blows his own head off, becoming the final sacrifice.
- Emo Teen
- Non-Action Big Bad: Juliet never gets to fight him at all.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Pez candy, according to his bio.
Zed
Voiced by: Shintaro Asanuma (JP), SuneoHair (JP - singing), Jimmy Urine (EN)
The punk rock zombie.
- Cluster F-Bomb: And when he shouts words loud enough, they turn into giant letters that hurt you.
- No Indoor Voice
- Politically Incorrect Villain: He refers to Juliet as a "bitch", "slut", "whore"... Almost every gender-based slur in the book.
- Punk Rock
- The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: The song he performs during the Boss Battle is one Nick really likes.
- Sir Swearsalot: Everyone in this game cusses, but Zed is worse than anyone else, and can use his swearing as a weapon.
- Words Can Break My Bones
Vikke
Voiced by: Jurota Kosugi (JP), James Onoda (JP - singing), Michael Rooker (EN)
The Viking metal zombie.
- An Axe to Grind: His Weapon of Choice
- Horny Vikings
- I Love the Dead: Necrophilia is stated to be among his influences (even though he himself is dead).
- I Was Beaten by a GirlL His reaction to being defeated by Juliet.
- Shock and Awe
Mariska
Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (JP), Shawnee Smith
The psychedelic zombie.
- Affably Evil: She's the only Purveyor whose dialogue is not solely composed of vulgar insults and threats, but still deviant.
- Boss Arena Idiocy: The only way to effectively fight her is with the Chainsaw Blaster, and the ammunition for it will periodically spawn in the circular arena.
- Car Fu: One of her attacks involves trying to run Juliet down with the tractor.
- Friendly Enemy: She greats the heroes with, "Ah, sister Juliet! And brother Nick!" a rather benign greeting compared to the vulgar threats and insults the others hit her with. While not exactly a Token Good Teammate , as she's still trying to murder Juliet, she doesn't use dirty tricks like the others do and the only negative trait on her bio is "really bad fashion sense". (The others have necrophilia, torture, etc.)
- Me's a Crowd: Use a finisher once on her, she splits into four copies of herself. Do it a second time, and she splits into eight. Fortunately, they all share the same life bar.
- New Age Retro Hippie
- Psychedelic Rock
- The Stoner: Unique in that she can project this to others; Nick compares being around her to how you feel after eating a "space cake". (A brownie with marijuana.)
- Uncleanliness Is Next to Ungodliness: Juliet ad Nick claim she stinks, a common stereotype of hippies, not helped by the fact that she's a living corpse.
Josey
Voiced by: Hajime Iijima (JP), ROLLY (JP - singing), Dave Fennoy (EN)
The funk zombie.
- Cool Spaceship: In the first stage of the battle, he seems to be on a floating, disk-shaped throne. Second stage, it turns into a flying saucer.
- Dirty Coward: He's all tough and mean when he has a hostage, an act that falls apart after Gideon manages to grab Rosalind.
- Funk
- Human Shield: Tries to use poor Rosalind as one.
- I Lied: He's actually kind of surprised when Juliet assumes he'd keep his word to let Rosalind go.
- Scary Black Man: Er, Scary Black Zombie, that is.
Lewis Legend
Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (JP), KONTA (JP - singing), Rick Wasserman (EN)
The rock 'n' roller zombie.
- All Bikers Are Hells Angels: Makes him even more dangerous in the Boss Battle as one attack consists of trying to run Juliet down.
- An Arm and a Leg: The first stage of the battle ends with Juliet severing his legs. Barely slows him down.
- Awesome McCoolname: Gotta admit, it sounds catchy.
- Evil Sounds Deep
- Flunky Boss: In the first stage of the fight, zombies spawn in the arena, making it difficult to dodge his attacks.
- Instrument of Murder: His bass guitar can work like a machine gun or shotgun, and trigger's his bike's transformations.
- Mini-Mecha: In the second stage of the fight, he turns his motorcycle into one; third stage, he turns it into one that can be driven like the motorcycle. Fourth stage, it becomes more defense-oriented, and can shoot missiles.
Killabilly
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (JP), Fred Tatasciore (EN)
The Zombie of Zombies, summoned by Swan after the five Dark Purveyors are sacrificed.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: His influences are said to be genocide, rape, splinters, suffering, roadkill, Michael Bublé, flat tires, Satan, Charley horses, oppression, torture, and M. Night Shyamalan.
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Easily the biggest zombie in the game.
- Cool Shades: Initially, they protect his eyes, but not for long.
- Dumb Muscle: He ain't too bright, being a textbook example of the type of boss the heroine has to outsmart.
- Eldritch Abomination
- Elvis Impersonator: A big, fat, ugly, demonic one.
- Fat Bastard Know how Elvis Impersonators tend to be fat? This guy is a disgusting exaggeration.
- Number of the Beast: He is 666 years old.
- Psychopathic Manchild: He's not all-too bright, with grammar and dialogue much like a five year old's.
- Villainous Crush: He seems to have a sick crush on Juliet, given his dialogue.
- Back to Lollipop Chainsaw
