M.U.G.E.N/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

With such a large variety of...well, everything for an engine whose name can mean "infinite", there are an infinite number of things that people disagree on.

PLEASE KEEP ALL EXAMPLES SUBJECTIVE. THANK YOU.

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: When ReubenKee died. Some backstory - his characters were hated for being overpowered and having cheap AI (for example: Dragon Claw is supposed to be really anti-projectile, but he can maim anyone easily, even Wolverine 71137 - except for the Guilty Gear characters).
  • Broken Base: The community's bonds were never particularly strong, but the way they are broken manages to vary from time to time.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: YouTube "teams" may or may not have some element of this, as said teams can be composed of characters who have an advantage over almost any other character and the roster may not be rotated frequently if at all.
  • Complaining About People Not Liking The Character: Happens quite a lot.
  • Crack Fic: Anyone with a copy of the engine and movie editing software can contort all their favorite fighting game characters (and some from outside the genre) into their own twisted concoction of a storyline.
  • Crack Pairing/Crossover Ship: Would it not be easier to list the characters that haven't been put into a strange fan pairing by Japanese MUGEN fans?
    • Jam/Anyone. A joke character has her knocking the opponent into the bed, where she proceeds to dry hump both of them into unconsciousness.
    • You can find all pictures related to this weirdness on Crossover Shipping (In fact, you'll note that on said page, only four of them don't come from MUGEN match-ups).
  • Crazy Awesome: ANYTHING BY MOST MYSTERIOUS and (Giji) Rare Akuma define it. Also, Shadow Kouma
    • It's pretty safe to say that Dee Bee Kaw wouldn't be anywhere near the powerhouse he was if he wasn't completely bugfuck insane.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Considering that the engine runs on "infinite possibilities," this is a given.
    • MC2 humiliating EvilSlayerX5 by impersonating him.
    • The None's crusade against Googoo64.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Creators like 3ha, The_None, and such are famous for creating hilarious characters.
    • Michael Jackson as he appeared in Moonwalker is available, with all his moves from the Genesis game. Try holding down the spin button for a few seconds while fighting any overpowered Badass characters and watch what happens. It's great.
    • Omega Tom Hanks. OMEGA. TOM. HANKS.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: When Reuben Kee died, the entire community basically forgot their differences to collectively pay their respects to him. Yes, you read that right. His death was able to BRING THE MUGEN COMMUNITY TOGETHER. Seeing all of these conflicting people, a good number of them otherwise very cynical and snarky, basically laying their issues aside to remember Reu in a serious manner. And no one community did this, practically every MUGEN forum was buzzing with love at the time.
  • Did Not Do the Research/They Just Didn't Care: Some characters may gain moves that they normally cannot or do not use in their source game/series; for instance, Gouken, a Martial Pacifist, using the deadly Shun Goku Satsu.
  • Fan Hater: EvilSlayerX5 is apparently one against all things Capcom and SNK, if not the fighting game genre in general.
  • Fan Nickname: Lots abound.
    • For examples of nicknames created by haters, we have EmoSuicideXFAVH and Rugal_Excrement/BugAll_Error (the latter coined by Don Drago).
    • MUGEN Genesis's forums wordfilter any nouns related to EvilSlayerX5.
    • A rather old one, but a version of Geese Howard known as Master Geese was called Master Cheese a lot back in the day.
  • Fetish Fuel: The source fighting games have fetish fuel, so it is no surprise that MUGEN has tons of fetish fuel.
    • Fetish Retardant: Consider it a balance. Just like Haruhi has Fetish Fuel, altering her settings can change her Strip KO so she... pisses herself. But of course, there are just as many people out there that DO enjoy this, so....
    • Tendril, a near-naked woman who controls tentacles.
      • And yet she kisses so sweetly...
  • Follow the Leader: Most Egregious example would be Reuben Kee's Evil Ryu and Evil Ken, who kickstarted the still-alive trend of Evil Counterpart edits to them and to other characters, most of which aren't very good.
  • Fridge Horror: If you lose to Ricepigeon's Yukari, she says that if you had beaten her, she would have merely shifted the boundary between victory and defeat. What if she already had?
  • Fun Personified: Joke characters in general.
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment: The_None made this once hilarious video in which Reu's AI controlled Evil Ken has a survival run in hell, where hitsounds are replaced with The Nerd's voiceclips, against "retarded" characters. A few months later though, one would hope The_None didn't wish for Reu to end up like that.
  • Game Breaker: Though there are too many examples to specifically list them all, there are a lot of characters that are more or less walking doom machines. Many characters from games with unique or unorthodox mechanics become either this or Joke Characters when they are initially ported, but newer versions of those characters may or may not clever coding or mods to balance them out.
    • Honorary mention goes to Master Mecha Sonic, who has a "Hyper Kamehameha" that can deal over 999 hits. Only the creator of his MUGEN can tell exactly how many hits it does.
    • A built-in example is the F1 key. It ain't called "The Heart-Attack Button" for nothing.
  • Good Bad Bugs: Use one of (Mouser's) Dragon's throws against Jesuszilla's Felicia (or any character with the GANKBANK implemented) and then... this happens.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Your Mileage May Vary on this one, but we'll digress. Jesuszilla once made a Scout soundpack for Choiyer's Haruhi. Now, after THIS trailer of the Team Fortress 2 ripoff that noneless stars a Haruhi Expy with a baseball bat, you know who to blame for this inspiration.
    • Ryan "Mattasaur" Kerns (now better known as one of the illustrators of the God Mode Online webcomic) once drew this piece satirizing the notorious-back-then creator Silent Storm. The EvilSlayerX5 debacle in its entirety is the reason why this comic's still relevant.
    • KOF-centric Vans gave his take on Kyo Kusanagi an aerial version of his classic Orochinagi DM. Fast forward a few years later, and now Kyo actually has the move in-game.
  • Internet Backdraft: Plenty and often, depending on just how good/bad a character is, who made it, et cetera....
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks: It's not uncommon among veteran MUGEN creators (and sometimes those who discovered the engine in it's earlier days as well) to think that, for all its flaws, the MUGEN community used to be a better place before YouTube brought the Newbie Boom.
  • The Japanese and Latin Americans Love MUGEN
    • Rikard's creations (especially Sachiel) also have quite of the following, as evidenced with fanart.
    • Italians Mexicans and Brazilians in particular tend to be quite productive when it comes to making fully edited characters.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some people who use MUGEN care less about the play balance and more about what the special and super moves look like. Shallow? Maybe, but they're still having fun.
  • Memetic Badass: Chuck Norris and Weegee.
  • Memetic Mutation: Tons.
    • X character rides the Yukari Express.
    • The Rugal/Krauser/Goenitz/Juli/Sayurispin.[1]
    • Being drunk makes you a god as strong as a DBZ character, you got to remember that...
    • Mario as Freddie Mercury, Krizalid as Billy Idol, etc.
    • The winquotes on Linkmyu's Kyo. For example, LOOK AT ME FUCK BITCH! ITS FACE ME BITCH, LOOK MY EYES!/YOU THINK YOU CAN FUCK THIS?! EH?! YOU THINK YOU CAN FUCK THAN ME EH?!
    • FUCKING AT WHORE [2]
    • "I saw nothing. NOTHING! BUT RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!
    • BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!
  • Misaimed Fandom: A part of the community (dubbed The YouTube MUGEN community) seems to skewer what MUGEN was supposed to be--in the eyes of veteran members, at least.
  • Most Annoying Sound: All of Yagoshi's "Symbiote" edits of Luigi, Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin and Bob have ear-raping sounds, especially whenever they take damage. Any character with poor sound effects can do the same.
  • Nightmare Fuel: An obvious example would be Andres Borghi's original creations. In particular is Noroko, the Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl. She has an instant killing desperation that is a literal screamer, and a win pose where she attempts to "escape" from MUGEN.
    • Notable creator XCB, who retired from MUGEN thanks to people taking his beta-state WIPs and hosting them on their sites, decided to bid a fond "fuck you" to the community by purposefully allowing his character Blaque (intended to be Tetsu Yatogi's sister) to be released. When people downloaded it, what they got was a Joke Character that self-destructed and flashed images of The Chatterer and some other Gorny stuff at lightspeed, followed by a seizure-like image stating "HAVE A NICE DAY" at the end. If you look at the images in the SFF, you'll only be disturbed more...until you find a picture of Haruhi Hentai in it before the "HAVE A NICE DAY" images. The sad part? His plan failed, as some people were able to acquire the real, unfinished character.
    • StormEX's Ichigo becomes this when he Turns Red.
    • Souken's characters.
    • The_None's Giygas. He can summon stuff like headcrabs, as well as employ his endless repertoire of PSI-powers, at seizure-inducing levels and plays horrible sound clips of agonized wailing and screaming at completely random intervals. One of his special moves involve throwing the victim into one of two stage fatilities from EternalChampions: Challenge From The Dark Side (they funciton like quick time events to make it easier), and they are signalled by a red flash picture of Spengbab. When a new round starts, it looks as if you're fighting someone completely different, like Youmu, but SPENGBAB IT'S A TRAP. And when he wins...he'll either flash Gorny stuff at you, a Michael Jackson pic that GOES MAD and...Smile.JPG.

Public castration is a good idea.

      • The gorny stuff are death scenes from Wax Works, a game infamous for its many, MANY gory deaths.
  • Nightmare Retardant: La=Gooth, a pathetic attempt at making an Eldritch Abomination by some guy.
    • An unknown character called "Chaos"(LucasX3 in earlier versions) fits this trope well, with said character being filled with ear-raping sound effects from La=Gooth, and generally mediocre gameplay.
  • Pandering to the Base: A lot of known people in the community with YouTube accounts occasionally do this; for instance, Arpa created a contest to see who could best emulate his video style. Zigg4d's entry was voted to be the most downright chilling and perfect performance.
  • So Bad It's Good: Bebum Ryo. This ridiculous edit of Ryo Sakazaki has a Zanretsuken that does insane amounts of hits, combos that should never be possible, hair resembling that of an 80s glam rocker, and FATALITIES. One of his intros is about a minute long, featuring him getting punched in the nuts by Johnny Cage, who is in turn chased down by Shao Kahn. And that's just the beginning.
  • The Scrappy: Gouken by Alexlexus has been beaten by...pretty much everyone.
    • Same goes for Emo Suicide XFAHV's Rugal_BugAll_Error.
    • Haruhi Suzumiya's hate-level got up to the point where fight vids of newly-made characters involving her usually have a half-hearted disclaimer of "No, you're not finding any bashing here."
  • So Cool Its Awesome: Many view POTS (Phantom Of The Server) and his characters as this, due to their playstyle, AI and graphical effects. The same can be said about GM's characters, whose Street Fighter III and Mark Of The Wolves characters are considered to be the best in terms of accuracy and style. However, imitators that try, and sometimes fail, to mimic POTS' creations are not always regarded in the same light.
    • Grand Master Ryu is Ryu as a Badass Grandpa after training with Oro for years. Seems like a pretty standard and forgettable Ryu edit, but then you see it in action. The moves in his repertoire were much more badass in the author's head than in actuality. One of them has him doing a horse stance while firing a huge Hadouken with Dragonball sounds. One of them has him fire a bunch of odd looking, almost Metroid-ish projectiles. One of them has him punch the victim so far they slam against the wall, and he gives chase and beats them down in the corner. The highlight, however, is one where he throws a punch that launches the enemy, then proceeds to LAY DOWN ON HIS BACK AND FIRE A SHINKUU HADOUKEN UP AT THE VICTIM.
    • The creations of Most Mysterious deliberately invoke this trope.
    • Q by Drowin. Melty Blood, Hokuto no Ken, and a whole lot more collide to make this massive ball of hilarity.
    • RicePigeon released Primeus aka Gay Bahamut, who's essentially a parody of "retarded" characters. The end result is something that's So Bad It's Good. And hilarious to boot. While RicePigeon did strive for a "King of Retarded Characters" type, he managed to not overkill Primeus which made him somewhat a decent foe.
  • Special Effect Failure: If not created correctly, characters or their effects can have bizarre color schemes, appear in the wrong places, or generally not work.
  • "Stop Having Fun!" Guys: Mostly in the shape of SNK extremists, who still declare that the only good fighting games were those made by SNK on its glory days and will put down (most of the time, violently) people who use characters from doujin games or with new-generation mechanics. This is not to deny the doujin side of its share of meanies, either—a lot of them seem to really hate the characters of The DCU, the Flash and Superman being prime victims, and fans of DC Comics sometimes come under fire as a result.
  • They Just Didn't Care: Many "retarded" characters, which tend to have hideous spritework, stiff animation, terrible hitboxes, graphical errors, crappy movesets, or any combination thereof.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?: Very well-made and innovative characters get these kinds of moments. Also, sometimes fight scenes will inexplicably pull out a surprise Crowning Moment of Awesome. Actually, we could probably attribute this trope to the whole concept of M.U.G.E.N. itself.
    • We have Deadpool and Chuck Norris in this game. Cue the phrase...
    • Anytime someone pulls off a Shun Goku Satsu, it's usually a crowd-pleaser, especially if it's used to finish the match. Rare Akuma does it to dance music, and it is both hilarious and awesome at the same time.
    • Giji Rare Akuma extends his jukebox to include Caramelldansen, a portion of the 1812 Overture, 300 THIS IS SPARTA Remix, and even the Rickroll. And even then, he ups the ante even more by bringing in Orochi skull pillars and (older version only) the sound of Jotaro Kujo and Dio Brando shouting ORAORA/MUDAMUDA while he continues to pummel the helpless victim. Later updates added the AWESOME face to the Orochi skull pillars, the "BONK!", the inclusion of the wrecked Statue of Liberty from Planet of the Apes, and much, MUCH more.
    • And much like the Shun Goku Satsu, the infamous steamroller crush and its imitators are also a fan favorite. Will always have a WRYYYYYY at the end if it's used to finish the round. NO EXCEPTIONS. Rare Akuma, naturally, has a parody of this move where he drops the moon (and later, the Death Star) on the opponent, then kicks it repeatedly and stomps on it. If the opponent is killed by this move, then Rare Akuma performs Dio's "WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"...except that the actual sound effect is a dentist's drill.
    • Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks the sun onto the enemy.
    • Don Drago's Geese now has his 2K2 Unlimited Match HSDM in his Nightmare form.
    • The "Snowman" character, which is a snowman emoticon head on a Ryu body.
    • RicePigeon is a creator known for his custom Touhou characters, so when he released Suwako Moriya nobody was really taken aback. However, before the fight begins things take a dark turn. Suwako is destroyed by her own hat and the hat takes control as the one fighting. The Hat has its own theme music as well and is voiced by MUNDUS.
  • Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny
  • What Do You Mean It Wasn't Made on Drugs?
  1. All of these characters share an attack that has a form of spinning involved.
  2. In a rant, Ainotenshi says this in a rant against his detractors
