Dub Name Change

A Dub Name Change is when one, several, or all the characters have their names drastically changed with the importing of a fictional property.

Vincent: And you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with Cheese?

Vincent: Nah, man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the fuck a Quarter Pounder is.

Jules: What do they call it?

Vincent: They call it a "Royale with Cheese".

Usually it's meant to be a Woolseyism, when name changes are made so the audiences of the foreign country can better understand and relate to the characters. Names are also changed to avoid controversial names (or have different meanings in another culture like Mr. Satan), prevent copyright infringement or retain Meaningful or Punny Names that would otherwise be lost in a more pure translation. In the case of video games, these have often come about due to limitations in the number of characters used in a name (Japanese names can be much longer than names written in English). Sometimes not all the names will be translated, leading to Aerith and Bob situations in some cases.

Fans of the original material are likely to get upset about the name changes (and some are legitimate Macekres) but other fans have embraced (or at least tolerated) these name changes. It usually depends on how strong the culture/national pride in the original work comes out, European names on characters who are supposed to be Japanese and from Japan can seem a little odd. As well, some are not actually changes but a romanization or translation that is easier for foreign voice actors to replicate.

  • Other shows like Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya gets the English versions of the names but the footage and everything else was from the Japanese versions (except things like the Ear Worm main song of Saint Seiya on his first transmissions) and other translated versions of anime main songs)
    • In Latin America, all names in Saint Seiya are kept except for Mascara de Muerte (a literal translation of Deathmask) and Krishaor Krista (Krishna). It also picks up the name (Caballeros del Zodiaco) and terms (Caballero/"Knight" instead of Saint and Armadura/"Armor" instead of Cloth) from the french dub.
    • In Spain, every single major character in Sailor Moon gets a Spaniard name, except Usagi and Ami, who are called "Bunny" and "Amy", like in English. The only character who maintained the Japanese name was Chibiusa.
  • In Spain, the Captain Tsubasa dub used the name changes made in the French dub, with several changes so all of them would sound like English names. The show had such a deep impact in Spaniard children that when the manga arrived to Spain 15 years later using the original Japanese names, the first volumes included an appendix explaining who was who.

    • Chibi-Usa to Malyshka Bunny (lit. "Little Girl Bunny"), often shortened to just "Malyshka" ("Little Girl"). At least this was the intended meaning...
    • Ami Mizuno to Ami Mitsuno (slight change, but noticeable).
    • Queen Beril to Koroleva Pogibel' (lit. "Queen Destruction", apparently so that kids would get that she's evil...)
    • Ann/En to Anna, ruining the pun on the word "alien". (Not that there would be an acceptable way to preserve that pun without completely changing their names...)
